yummie chicken wings, there pulled pork is awesome. I like the 3 of 4 sauces they have the 4th being Carolina (not a fan) My kid loved his ribs. Just there for Breakfast everyone loved there food but me.. Sorry the blue berry sauce was great but the Beignet was not.  My eggs  were super runny which also is not my preference. Over all my experience here has been good this last time not so, but it might be because they were super busy. Will be going back but not for breakfast
Review Source:This was a great place hidden around the Hillsmere area. Great atmosphere, great music and fantastic BBQ dishes. I did the smokehouse sampler and that pulled pork was fantastic. Loved the option of adding various sauces that were set on the table. Never got the chance to stay late enough to hear the live bands but it looks like it would be a lot of fun. Definitely worth a visit.
Review Source:This is a nice little surprise in Annapolis (right next to the locally famous Bay Ridge Wine and Spirits). Â The chef takes real pride in his food and you can really tell on the plate. Â
I sampled one of their pierogies...absolutely delicious. Â Not only was the pierogie great, but the sauce it came with was fantastic. Â I also tried the chipotle hummus appetizer. Â It was a little bland, but I'm not sure they could have done much more with it...so I can't fault them. Â
I also had a few cocktails when visiting the establishment. Â We came during the late afternoon and I get the impression that the person tending bar wasn't that experienced. Â Both the Manhattan and Sidecar I sampled were just okay, but they at least knew what went in them. Â
Certainly nothing negative can be said of the staff...all very attentive and I'll be happy to go back and give it another shot for dinner.
Not a big barbeque but partner is. Â He rated ribs and brisket best he had in ages. Good choices for vegetarian / pescetarian
options. Good selection of beers/wines. For open space restaurant - industrial look - sound not overpowering so can carry on a conversations. Â Highly recommend!
I was quite surprised with how good this BBQ palce was. Â They have a selection of homemade BBQ sauces as well as an amazing BBQ breakfast/brunch menu.
The one complaint I may have is the portions aren't very "American." Â One would say they are perfectly portioned for what the average American SHOULD eat, but I'm a girl who loves her food so some of their meals don't quite fill me up.
They do have a nice daily happy hour that reasonably priced.
A 5 star for my visit, nice happy hour, $2 off drafts and two $5 bar bites, neither of the two appealed to me so I had the suggested wings. A great suggestion by Janelle who was awesome! Smokey but juicy, just get them plain, these wings need no sauce!
I got the Mac and Cheese to-go to try again. Well, no more tries here, absolutely the worst mac and cheese I have ever had. One bite at home on the kitchen counter and it went straight to the trash. Overcooked capatavi in a light thin watery Alfredo type sauce. There was no cheese to the mac, inedible. So 1 star for the mac, 5 for the wings and Janelle's hospitality.
Honestly it took a little while, but they have their "A" game on now. Â Been there three times since my last review and the food has been consistent and good. Service is right there where it needs to be.
Downside for me is the noise and I belive they are aware of it.
Still have not made it for happy hour--stopped in once and it was jammed and no seats at the bar, so I left.
But let's call this a win!
My husband and I went to the Smokehouse last Sunday afternoon with our 3 year old daughter.
It didn't seem that busy, but the waitress appeared to be 'in the weeds' when we arrived, perhaps because several tables arrived at the same time? The other waitress took our drink orders. Our  waitress came over after that and was very friendly. She also put our order in before a table of 7, which was awesome of her, since we would have had a long wait otherwise, and we were starving!
I ordered the beef brisket and my husband ordered the pulled pork. Our daughter had the Mac and cheese. Â All of the food was very good, I especially liked the rolls. The chips were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. I dislike this trend of serving potato chips instead of french fries. But, that's me.
The only real downside I had was that there was a very miserly amount of coleslaw on my sandwich. Maybe they were running out? Also, the mac and cheese was rather bland. I guess because it is a kid's item? A little salt helped. The cheese sauce was very good otherwise.
All in all, I thought the food was very good. We got a nice surprise at the end of the meal, our drinks were charged at happy hour prices. If I had been aware, I might have had another! I think we will probably return if we are in the area again. It helps that Bay Ridge Liquors is right next door. :)
I have a favorite four letter word that begins with F. Â Smokehouse brought to mind this word.... before you start to think badly of me, let me clarify.... that word is Fine. Â Smokehouse is fine. With thanks to Merriam Webster (and so you aren't confused by my intended use of the word fine) I provide some Synonyms:
acceptable, adequate, all right, creditable, decent, OK (or okay), passable, respectable, satisfactory, serviceable, so-so, sufficient, tolerable
My husband and I stopped in rather unexpectedly on a recent night.
The positives: The hostess was quick to seat us and the waitress arrived promptly to take drink orders. Â Since we were quite hungry we didn't take long to order and we asked the waitress to bring the food as it was ready, which she did, to our delight.
The neutrals: Â the food was fine. Â We ordered an appetizer (mac and cheese), an entree salad (Smoked Pear), and the mix of bbq (Smokehouse sampler). Â Let me repeat myself... the food was fine. Â There was absolutely nothing remarkable about any of these. Â The Mac was a bit greasy for us but the flavor was fine. The smokehouse sampler had plenty of meat all of which was fine. We tried some of the sauces on the table, without any standout offerings. The salad, which we took home and ate for lunch the next day, was fine too. Â It had lots of spinach but the pear was a bit too smoky for my husband's taste (I liked it). Â
The negatives: Â It was so noisy we could barely speak to one another. Â Unfortunately this restaurant elected the high, industrial ceiling vibe which is so popular these days. Â They also have an open concept so there is no separation between bar and restaurant. Â Perhaps it is quieter on a night when the NCAA tournament is NOT on all the TVs... Â
In summary, the food was just ok, but maybe we would have enjoyed it more with a better environment.
The appetizers were delicious and filling! I didn't really even need an entree. The ribs were ridiculous. So tender and moist, with a sweet and tangy dry rub. My daughter loved her naked chicken wings. I definitely recommend the beer battered onion rings, the dip is amazing. Great service and nice atmosphere. Eat here!
Review Source:A great new addition. The decor is warm and comfortable. The people are extremely friendly and knowledgable. The beef brisket is amazing. The duck sandwich is great. I lived in North Carolina for 7 years and had BBQ many times in Lexington. This is as good as anything there. Delicious.
Review Source:Best thing to happen to our neighborhood in years, especially since there's not alot going on out here . . . . and it's a nice atmosphere with easy peazy parking and access. Bar atmosphere was fun, relaxed and  it was easy to fit in and immediately feel at home and comfortable.
Really excellent barbeque, we had ribs and brisket. Meat wasn't hot, but the smoking and the flavors, texture and taste were all perfectly done. Sides were delicious including the sweet potatoes, the slaw and the collards. Where can you get collards in Annapolis? Answer: At the Smokehouse.
Drinks were good pours, wine selection and beer choices right on. Service was pleasant and accurate. Our server was very nice and did a good job, didn't get in the way and didn't want to be our new best friend. But she paid attention and got us the right stuff. I thought it was cool the way she "palmed" my lemon wedge while delivering food to another table but got me what I wanted.
Owner stopped by the table and really seemed to care about the food and the experience.
Portions were huge, value was strong and we will go back next week. In fact, I have already called friends in Eastport to join us for dinner next week.
Myself and some coworkers stopped in today for lunch on a whim because we heard how good it was. Â We were seated quickly and as we sat down we were greeted quickly by a nice waitress. Â I have to say the place is well decorated with local artwork and a really modern feel. Â
We all ordered up the pulled pork sandwich. Â I had to request that the coleslaw be on the side because Im not a big fan of slaw on my bbq. Â The sandwiches came to the table quickly and we dove right in. Â Every bite was mouthwatering... I coated mine in their KC BBQ and Fire sauce. Â Either way all of their housemade sauces were amazing, but I like a kick in my bbq so the fire and KC did the trick. Â The chips were warm and crispy and for a $9 plate, I would say we got a great deal.
I have had BBQ in texas, memphis and carolina, and I have to admit this was one of my favorite sandwiches. Â After we finished, the Owner's uncle Rob (the cook/smoker) came out and introduced himself. Â He then went on to tell us how he smokes the pork and even how he learned from the BBQ Pitmaster himself Myron Mixon. Â A very nice man indeed! Â We will be returning for lunch plenty of times!
Without getting into the usual "genitalia measuring" that goes along with most barbecue snobs talking the merits of whichever style they're a fan of (Carolina versus Texas versus Kansas City), I can say that my experience at the Annapolis Smokehouse was excellent and I will return with friends and guests for more delicious barbecue.
I arrived with two dinner mates on a Wednesday night to find the dining room completely packed with a short waiting line forming, which is noteworthy for mid-week dining in Annapolis. The location is in a strip mall setting, but once you get inside you'll find polished concrete floors, modern industrial fixtures, and interesting artwork. They did a nice job putting this place together, and it shows.
Once we were seated, our server arrived within a few minutes, and we ordered a few brews from the impressive craft beer list. A bit pricey at $6 a beer, but they have a good selection of porters, IPAs, and nice lagers.
We each ordered the pulled pork barbecue sandwich, but there were plenty of different ways to walk through barbecue heaven on the menu inclusion Texas brisket, Memphis pulled pork, ribs, and chicken entrees.
The sandwiches arrived quickly on a tasty potato roll undressed so that we could sauce them up with one of the four types of sauces on the table (Carolina, Sweet KC, Texas, and "regular" barbecue). The pork had a beautiful pink ring under the crispy skin and even without sauce, the pork literally melted in our mouths. Homemade potato chips and cole slaw accompanied the plate and nothing was left standing after we ate.
Service was good and the manager even ran out to the parking lot to give me my cell phone that I'd left behind. I can't speak for the rest of the menu yet, but judging by the crowd waiting to get in when we left, Annapolis finally has a good barbecue option.
Went for the first brunch. Everything was good. Jordan was a pleasant personality behind the bar and the food was good. Anytime I can order a side of brisket, Im in. However the bloody marys sucked (chunky and way too smoky). I gave mine away and moved to beer. The mimosa glasses looked too small for me to try to drink out of gracefully in such a state. I will def go back for brunch and other times. They just need to get a good bloody mary mix (pre-bottled is not a bad thing). Without a good bloody, your brunch game cannot be 5 stars in naptown. I hope they end up with LD on brunch, hes a good personality for sunday morning.
Review Source:Went with the better half for a lunch. Â We both ordered the sampler to try their smoked meats. Â Sadly there is no sweet tea and they only have Coke products. Â The beer and wine selections were plentiful. Â First out was the fried cornbread. Â Light but little to no flavor. Â Then came the platters. Â For $20 you get 2 ribs, 3 nice slices of brisket and a pile of pulled pork. Â The ribs didn't need any sauce they were so good. Â The first slice of brisket was moist but the others quickly dried out. Â Not sure if they cut it to order or not. Â Great smoke ring and good flavor. Â The pulled pork had to be at least 5-6 ounces of moist pig. Â All the meats were well done. Â However, the sauces were a major disappointment. Â First, I will admit I am not a fan of the Carolina type sauces. Â There were four on the table. Â Carolina vinegar based, Carolina mustard based (was pretty sweet), Kansas City style(described by server as ketchup based) and honey, apple. Â After living in Kansas City and Texas for many years I definitely know what I like and none of these sauces hit the mark. Â I would say they KC was underdeveloped. Â Looked like ketchup and tasted like celery salt. Â Sides were not much better. Â Beans had an odd flavor to them. Â Cole slaw was decent but probably wouldn't order it again. Â My wife said the potato salad had no flavor. Â Have to admit we had a good server who answered our many questions and was attentive and polite. Â Overall, they should be a BYOS (S= sauce) place and I could eat in again. Â As of today I would definitely pick up their meats and bring them home and doctor my own sides.
Review Source:Football and wings, great combination. Â Last night friend called and wanted to pick up some wings and come over. Â My brother in law had raved about a new neighbors Annapolis Smokehouse. Â I called in an order to go. Â The service was great, the young lady described the sauces and suggested she send the wings naked and would include sides of all the sauces. Â
Wings were ready in 15 minutes, the smokehouse applewood aroma pouring out if the box upon opening, Â 2 orders, over 20 wings, carrots, celery, ranch and then the sauces. Â The naked wings were basted while smoking and the underlying sweetness, well, yum! Â The fire sauce was hot to the smell, our Labrador left the table, too hot for a dog that eats everything. Â The heat was nice, not too vinegary. Â The BBQ sauce added a nice sweetness, the blueberry and mustard need some work, maybe better if tossed but not as dips.
I have found a new goto for wings, will go back and try the ribs. Â On pickup noticed a friendly crew at the bar, laid back enjoying the game. Â Looking forward to a local hang out, we need this in our side of NAP town.
I had heard the service was slow, but they must be improving because our service was very good. We were there early, but there was a full bar and most tables were occupied. I ordered the pulled pork dinner and my wife had the shrimp salad. The pork was what I would expect from a smokehouse with no smoke it was fine, but don't expect an authentic barbecue experience  they offer a few sauces and brought me a side bowl of a hotter sauce  I was disappointed by the East Carolina vinegar based sauce, it just didn't have the zip and flavor this type of sauce is famous for when done right. The other sauce I tried, Memphis?, was decent, and the hot sauce on the side was a more hot than good. I didn't try the shrimp salad, but it looked good with lots of nice sized shrimp.
The level of noise was annoying, but I was told they are installing acoustical treatment. It is nice to have another bar option in the area and that is probably be the reason I go there.
My family and I enjoyed a wonderful meal there last night. Â Pulled pork, smoked salmon sandwich, and chicken ceasar salad. Â All three meals were quite good. Â The salmon had an incredible flavor, but they probably could work on the "engineering" of the sandwich some - it did not tend to hold its integrity as a sandwich and fell apart too easily making it much easier to eat with fork and knife than as a sandwich. Â
They have an interesting mixture of sauces. Â Of the sauces the blueberry is probably the most novel, but also needs the most work. Â A slight shake of the sauce causes it to react a bit like a carbonated drink and almost seemed to have a fermented flavor. Â The SC BBQ style mustard sauce and the Eastern NC style vinegar sauce are both extremely good. Â The KC sauce is also extremely good.
Since this is more of a southern cuisine it would be also appropriate to add a southern delicacy to the drink menu - sweet tea.
The service, atmosphere, and attention to customer needs all second to none and well worth future visits on that basis alone.
We were very excited to try a new neighborhood restaurant, but unfortunately this restaurant needs improvement. The service was friendly and attentive but the food quality left much to be desired. First, the fried cornbread had a fishy taste as if it was fried along with seafood. Then our son's chicken tenders arrived and were raw in the center. Waiter was good and promptly remedied the situation. My husband's half rack was very small, more like a quarter rack. My pulled pork dinner was a little too dry and lacked flavor. Finally the atmosphere is very loud making it difficult to have dinner conversation.
Review Source:I'd like to first start by saying that I've never written a negative review on Yelp. Â It is my hope that the owners will actually take my comments to heart as we really, really, REALLY wanted to love this place! My husband and I had been "stalking" the place for months waiting for it to open.
I went with my husband, father, and stepmother last Saturday night. The stars that I gave the place are pretty much all due to how wonderful the place looks! The bar area especially, I'd love to bring some friends here for drinks. Â And I do mean just drinks.
I ordered the Redneck Tacos.  Something about how pulled pork and cole slaw mingle together, I was super stoked.  What came to my table was not as I envisioned. The pork was flavored okay, but dry. The cole slaw had NO SAUCE. It was literally like shreds of cabbage, carrots, and pretty sure some green apple pieces. I'm all for changing it up, but do it right!  The cheese shreds on top were also not melted, and the johnny cakes which formed the "taco" were  very dense and room temperature. The absence of any type of sauce was not helped by the bbq mustard on the table, I ended up putting the leftover ranch dressing from my starter salad on it!  My husband got the brisket, and while he had no problems clearing his plate, he said it was a bit dry and he has had better.  He had been especially excited about the mac and cheese, which he said didn't taste like much.  My step mom got the pulled pork sandwich.  On her first bite I saw her spit out something in her napkin-- a huge piece of fat. She looked through the pork to make sure she didn't have that happen again, and ended up pulling literally half of the sandwich off of the bun... fat. It was so bad that she showed it to our server, who was very nice and ended up taking the meal off our our bill.  However, that is not the worst of it. My dad got the half rack of ribs.  He was pretty quiet, not one to complain.  When I finally asked him how they were, he said, "How about you try it yourself".  He handed me a piece of meat to try.  I had one end in my mouth and the other end held by my two hands, trying to take a bite. I gave up, not wanting to look like a crazed dog in the middle of a restaurant. The were SO DRY.  There was not one stand out meal. Our nachos appetizer was also quite underwhelming, unmelted cheese and cold salsa, yumm.
Again, it is with a heavy heart that I write this review. I am not a complainer or someone hard to please. The only reason I'm writing, again, is in hopes that management might take me seriously. Â The atmosphere was great (maybe a bit loud for my parents), but we appreciated the look and feel of the place - artwork, the crab baskets for lights, the gorgeous floors and bar. I also appreciated the beer and wine menu.
We will wait a few months and give it another try, but I know my parents will look at me like I have 3 alien heads if we try to take them back there again. Â I know you are new and working out the kinks, but please focus on the food! I've had better ribs at Chili's.
Yum! Â This place is just what the doctor ordered. Â On my first visit i had the pulled chicken sandwich and my husband had the pulled pork sandwich. Â Both were super tender and juicy with fresh buns and tasty cole slaw on the side. Â They had several BBQ sauces on the table to choose from so you could tailor your meal to your liking. Â I personally liked the KC Sauce but my husband opted for the spicier vinegar. Â The drink prices were perfect- atmosphere happening- fast service. Â They had great happy hour specials too. Â I will definitely go back!
Review Source:Well, some very good and some medium. Loved the ambiance, but it was a bit loud. We had the brisket and pulled pork sandwiches; the pulled pork was really excellent and my companion said it was the some of the best brisket she has had, although it was slightly dry. They serve all their meats without sauce... and a little mustard sauce solved that problem. We ordered the nachos (on fresh potato chips), they were OK, but I didn't really understand them. Excellent beer selection, very good service. Local owners clearly working some start-up bugs out. We will definitely be back, we live in the neighborhood and are happy they are here.
Review Source:Well I've read a few of the reviews here and they seem to be all over so to me that says new restaurant. I went for my first time with my brother (a BBQ aficionado, we once toured Colorado finding the best BBQ and onion rings, really). We had a nice waiter although he made some poor choices, the first being he brought us old, cold over done "fried corn bread" aka hush puppies while they were "making more." Bad choice by either him or the kitchen, they were horrible. But when he brought out the new ones they were fine. I've had better and they were not overly unique, but they were good. We ordered the brisket meal with beans and salad and the half rack with same sides. Let me preface by saying I am an Adam's rib fan, their ribs more than sandwiches, but still like to eat there.
So my brother loved the brisket and I thought it was quite tasty. It was a little inconsistent, dry on one end, fatty on the next piece, but it was smoked nice with great flavors. Â We both liked the ribs, but though Adam's doesn't have to worry any time soon about being overtaken. My brother loved the beans, I didn't think they were bad, but they looked out of a can. The small salad was just right, with a good dressing (blue and ranch). Not sure if they were homemade, but they were good and the mixed spring greens were very fresh.
Let's talk sauce. We saw three sauces on our table: Carolina (vinegar sauce), Mustard sauce, and blueberry. Both my brother and I looked at each other...blueberry? So we asked the waiter about the blueberry and he had no real explanation on where to put it. We also asked him if there was a regular tomato based house BBQ sauce. No was the answer. We thought that strange.
We also had a nice beer, Mamma Little's Yella Pils, out of Colorado. My brother had just been there and had it. It was very good and not a beer you see everywhere, so YAY!
So why a little disappointed, I will be back to try other things. The atmosphere is nice, but loud, and we were there at like 3pm so it was not even full. Noise is going to be a problem there, so bring your yelling voice.
Why go? because it's new and it has good potential! What to eat? Try what you like or what you have the most experience with.
Biggest mistake by AST: never bring out old, cold, overcooked hush puppies just because the new batch isn't done. Explain blueberry sauce. Add a reg BBQ sauce.
And can someone explain the blueberry to me? Is that a new BBQ trend?
Ill be back to try apps next and more beer. I'm happy to have a new place in the Annapolis Neck area. Let's hope they take some of the comments and make it a great place!
What a welcome addition to the local restaurant/bar scene.  Maryland is a wasteland when it comes to BBQ... most Marylanders think it's the Baltimore style "pit beef"--- or worse  a steak or chicken thrown on a propane grill in the backyard.  Having spent several years travelling North Carolina as a sales rep, I have sampled many of the legendary NC BBQ joints. Plus having in-laws and some property just  a few minutes from the VA-NC border -- I have developed  a more than a casual interest and appreciation in BBQ. Â
So what I am saying is the bar is low around Maryland. Â Overcooked meats with Cattleman's sauce and Liquid Smoke is the usual fare you will find. Â However, Annapolis Smokehouse and Tavern (AST) really stands out! Â We tried a sampler of meats and a pulled pork sandwich to judge. Frankly my NC connection means that BBQ is pork, only pork... period. Â
Pulled pork was moist, Â essentially devoid of any sauce, showed no signs of holding for a long period and being reheated, Â The flavor was of pork with a gentle smoke. They claim applewood and pecan... I am partial to applewood. Â Excellent ! Â My only complaint was that the meat was too chunky... needed a bit more effort in the shredding dept. Â And some NC BBQ fans would probably like the option of chopped pork.
Ribs on the sampler plate  were also nicely smoked with no overpowering smoke or excessive saucing. The meat did not "fall off the bone" but then that's a myth and is actually a sign that  its over done and may have been reheated one (or more times)... That said ..the ribs could have used another hour or so in the smoker.  The connective tissue was still "connecting" so to speak.  I like it when it is attached and still moist-- but gnawing on the bone  like a pit bull to get to the meat should not be. There is a happy medium, just barely missed.
The brisket I checked out was really good brisket, but as I said I think BBQ is pork. Â The wife thoroughly enjoyed it.
The bar is impressive. The entire dining space is very pleasant and well decorated.  The servers are excellent... our barkeep, Jennifer  was simply top notch, pleasant, entertaining and informative.  The only downside I see is that its in a strip mall, lacking visibility; and I find that a negative probably only since I have negative experiences  in so many strip malls joints.  AST is an exception it;s not diner style food.  I expect AST will see me as a regular.  Maybe they'll even name a bar stool after me
Walking in the door the most obvious aspect of the restaurant is loud... Think can't hear your dinner mates loud. Â
The service was also fairly poor. Â Long waits for both liquor and food. In addition to being in attentive the service staff was also unable to remember orders correctly and not very friendly when alerted to their mistake. Â
I ordered the armadillo eggs to start and was excited for the jalapeños and brisket.  The jalapeños were hot but I never found the brisket.  My brisket sandwich was very fatty.   Saving grace for this restaurant was the decent beer selection and potato chips.  Hopefully these are all kinks that will be worked out as Annapolis lacks a good BBQ place.
The place looks nice. Cool atmosphere. Hostess and waitress were very nice and helpful. Appetizers we're really good. We had the Armadillo Eggs (stuffed jalapenos) and some of the fried cornbread. Though one of the three jalapenos was much much hotter than the other two. Enough to make my eyes water and mouth burn. And that's unusual for me.
My wife ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which came out very dry. And her fries we're just ok, disappointing considering we were charged an extra $3 to trade chips for fries.
I ordered the smoked ribeye, rare. It came to me cold. It looked nice but there didn't appear to be any seasoning on it while the menu said it would have chili and garlic butter. Mine had neither. I sent it back, which is something I had never done, mostly to have it warmed up. It's a $23 steak so I want to at least have it be edible. I mentioned to the waitress it was cold and did not have the chili or butter on it. She apologized and took it back, along with my fork and knife. The steak was returned by whom I would assume was the chef. It was warm but still did not have the chili and butter on it. At that point I just wanted to eat. But, of course I had no fork or knife to eat  with. So I had to cut the steak with a butter knife and my wife and I shared her fork until we could get the waitresses attention to get another fork.
The outer, fatty edge of the steak was delicious! I ate it last and I was able to tell just what flavor they were going for with the steak. I just wish the rest of it had tasted as good. All together the steak was average.
Overall I chalk the experience it up to growing pains since the place is new. It has a lot of potential. I just hope they can eventually deliver. We'll probably go back in a few months when they've worked out the kinks.
My fiance and I came here for happy hour after a couple of our friends highly recommended it. Â The bartender seemed to stay busy with continuous carry-out orders. We were very impressed with the quality of the service, She would help carry the food out to cars and before they left she made sure they sampled all the sauces they had to offer.
We started with the Chipotle Hummus; I was happy to learn they made everything homemade and it was obvious with the chunky style of the hummus. Â
For my main course I had the Redneck Tacos and my fiance had the brisket sandwich. My Taco's were outstanding!! They were nothing like your average tacos, served on a homemade johnny cakes ( kinda like a homemade tortilla made out of thin corn bread) topped with coleslaw and it came with two sides of my choice. My Fiance thought he's brisket sandwich was a little dry but tasty.
We'll be back for sure and next time I'm coming for the ribs!
I had a great lunch here shared with my dining partner: 1/2 a brisket sandwich, 1/2 a pulled pork sandwich, and 1/2 an order of fried green tomatoes. I'm definitely coming back!
The meat was juicy and flavorful all on its own. The buns were just right for BBQ - absorbent and slightly sweet. The sandwiches came with a small side of cole slaw (ehn), a pickle (which I like, but coming from the south, I've got to say...shouldn't the pickles be sliced on the sandwich??) and a selection of BBQ sauces. None of the sauces really did it for me: KC BBQ, blueberry, Carolina, and Mustard. But the meat was flavorful enough that the sandwich didn't need them -- which, in my book, is really saying something.
The fried green tomatoes were really good too! Piping hot and crisp batter with firm but juicy green tomatoes. Yum!
Service was great and the ambiance was sort of upscale for a BBQ joint, but I could see it fitting in this part of Annapolis. I'm happy it's there!
This newly opened restaurant has some kinks to work out, but I already love them and have faith that they will one day merit 5 stars...
I usually don't review after only one visit, so keep in mind that this is based soley on today's lunch.
I was immediately impressed with the decor--clean, sleek, with vibrant original art on the walls-nice. I loved the piped in music (this is important to me as so many places today blast you with annoying crap that just makes you want to hurry up and get out.) It was upbeat but pleasant and just loud enough to make you want to hang out for awhile.
The staff were very welcoming and Sam, the waiter was attentive, but not intrusive and informative without being pushy.
The pack of 4 different BBQ sauces on the table made me very happy as I am a sauce-nut... I liked them all, but the Kansas City was my favorite.
Complimentary corn bread came with my meal but was not ready (remember those kinks...) Sadly, it was not worth the wait--more like a deep fried hushpuppy and very dense, hard and too savory for my taste. I would like to strongly suggest some real cornbread as an option--yes, with a crispy exterior, but not deep fried. And if you prefer making it savory, have the option of honey butter or at least a little honey to add.
Another suggestion I have is to offer wet wipes on the table--the napkins were definitely not sufficient.
I ordered a variety of things to try and here is my take on them:
Onion rings: VERY good (still not my favorite though) but I did not care for the horseradish dipping sauce (KC BBQ sauce was better) These came huge and crispy-nice flavor...(If you are looking for the best around, I suggest The Bistro at the South River Golf Club or Cheeburger, Cheeburger)
Baked Beans...VERY good (but Red Hot and Blue is better)
Cole Slaw...described as creamy was not creamy at all--just freshly cut chunks of veggies very lightly dressed, almost dry. Not my cup of tea but I took it home to doctor up with my awesome recipe...smile. I am still trying to find a great cole slaw around here and can only say that Adams Ribs is tops but not terrifric.
Ribs...this is where they aced it! While I am not an expert (Tim, we need your review as a registered BBQ judge!) to me this was an example of an award winning rendition. The meat did NOT fall off the bone (yuck) but had a nice bite to it and a gorgeous glazed crispy exterior. Wonderful! These are now my favorite in town. (I hope Tim does not burst my bubble...smile)
I think this may become my go-to place (it helps that I could walk there from my house--if I were in better shape that is...) so I will be sure to review again soon.
I have been to the Annapolis Smokehouse twice since they opened last week. I must say, that the service was great! The waitress, was very friendly and personable, and recommended the Armadillo Eggs, and Texas Brisket. Â I was extremely happy with both of her recommendations. Â My experience there was awesome. Obviously, they have a few kinks to work out, but what restaurants, don't when just opening.
I highly recommend the Annapolis Smokehouse.
Best barbecue in Annapolis, hands down. Annapolis Smokehouse just opened this past Wednesday. We had an early dinner there tonight and managed to catch their fantastic happy hour. Where to start? The beer and wine list is great (good selection of draught and bottled beer and wines by the glass and bottle). We started with complementary fried cornbread and honey butter (yummy!) and we ordered a pulled pork sandwich and a salad with pulled pork for dinner. The pork is amazing! The meat is tender, chunky, and very flavorful; it's definitely pulled by hand. The salad greens and vegetables were fresh and the roll for the sandwich was lightly toasted---perfection. The sandwich came with homemade chips that were warm, crisp, and well salted. They make all their sauces in house! The KC barbecue sauce was tangy; the Carolina mustard sauce was out of this world. Service was very prompt and friendly. Several staff people stopped by just to make sure we were doing OK. The dining room is large---there are plenty of tables and the bar is plenty big. The noise was energetic but not too loud. We'll definitely go back. Â They have take-out too.
Review Source:I had a very poor experience here. The restaurant is new so this review is written with a grain of salt. Unfortunately, there were far too many shortcomings for me to dismiss them as "opening week jitters." I'll lay it out as objectively as I can, you can decide if they are fair.
We arrived with 5 adults and 2 babies around 545 on Saturday night. The hostess was very sweet, told us just a few minutes.  I won't bore you with the details, but 30-40 minutes later, we had  our table. You can make a reservation and should you choose to come, I'd encourage you to do. The bar area is comfortable and waiting room is ample.
We sat and were offered warm complimentary hushpuppies and butter. It was a generous offering, although not to my taste. They were fairly dense and lacked enough sugar in my opinion. We ordered the nachos and the pork perogies as appetizers. The waitress informed us they were out of perogies, but recommended the armadillo eggs in their place. We heeded to her suggestion. About 5 minutes later, she came back and said she was out of those. We just stuck with the nachos with chicken. They arrived comprised of potato chips, shredded cheese, smoked chicken and other standard nacho toppings. Served to the table luke warm, ew couldn't help but notice some of the cheese was not melted. The toppings were sparse, and the chips weren't salted. The chips, described as fresh cut, are a foodservice product I've recognized from other dock bars in the area if I'm not mistaken. They are tasty, but not exactly "fresh cut" as the menu would leave you to believe.
For the main course, we spread out. One of us ordered shrimp skewers. They arrived without being deveined. One ordered the brisket sandwich, which was tough and chewy and had far too much inedible fat. The pulled pork we felt was average, however, the serving on the sandwich we received was less than we expected. I felt the quality of the bread they chose for the sandwiches was quite good. The "tacos" served on johnny cakes were a miss - the cheese on top wasn't melted, the meat (one brisket, one pork) was fair, and the johnny cakes were bland and soggy. Even the kids meal was poor - the mac and cheese we felt lacked any flavor at all. There wasn't anyone at the table that felt they had a stand-out meal.
We did feel that two of the bbq sauces were very good - there is a tomato based and mustard base sauce that had great flavor. I didn't care for the blueberry, and the vinegar based sauce was almost straight vinegar. Kudos on the two bbq sauces.
Annapolis needs a great bbq restaurant. My opinion is that this place has a lot of work to do to fill that void. I hope to return in a few months once they've worked out all of the issues. However, the food was such an issue that I am concerned there may be too much work to do.
