i have been wanting to try this place for along time. so tonight we did..
my husband ordered a olive burger. it was very messy, didnt stay together very well. but none the less he still liked it. says wished they had steak fries..but the ranch was awesome( its homemade)!
my 16 yr old ordered the teriyaki burger... like his dad said that steak fries would b better...or even tater tots! again very messy to eat...didnt care for the pineapple on it. loved the ranch!
i ordered the chicken strips with fries...loved the ranch. the strips didnt seem to b done all the way. kinda pink and raw looking. i liked the fries, but agree that tater tots or steak fries would b better. loved the ranch also..may go in and just buy that! we will go back and try breakfast. if u love big burgers, try this place!
waitress was great! kept drinks filled only had to ask 2 times...but she was cleaning tables so it was ok. bill came to 40.40! drinks were lil on the funky side...u can tell its from a wander bar! yuck! order ice water and save the money on drinks! soda is gross! happy eating people!
We called in an order at 11pm on a monday night, brekky 'rito and some pancakes ...
The food was stellar; and the staff was courteous. Â
I couldn't of asked for a better late night take-out experience, I will be back.
Todd... thank you for your response... The main reason i gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because of your prices. Â 11.99 for a breakfast burrito? Â Perhaps you feel that you should charge the same as pegs? Â Well pegs is a rip off, and so is squeez... on top of that you're serving college students mainly. Â For a good example look at firesign in Lake Tahoe... 8 bucks for an omelette... and they're in Tahoe! Â I would eat at archies a lot more if it wasn't so overpriced.
We went to Archie"s a couple weeks ago.  I got the Denver Omelet, hash-browns, toast with a side of gravy.  The omelet was good but the hash-browns were barley luke warm...they were almost on the cool side inside.  The gravy was good but it was $2.50 for a small bowl which I though was on the high side.  The husband got the chicken fried steak and eggs.  He said it was ok...not great but not bad.  My 12 yr old son got the Strawberry French toast.  He was really impressed.  I had a bite and agreed with him.  It was awesome.  It tasted like having strawberry shortcake for breakfast.  My 9 yr old got pancakes and eggs and said it was really good.  The waiter we had was good.  He kept the drinks filled at a decent rate.  Overall It was decent food but I was not impressed with the barley cooked  hash-browns and high price for just a small bowl of gravy so that brought it down a couple stars.
Review Source:Food's good.  We came here for brunch one late morning and they were short staffed waiting on 6 other tables.  We used the Yelp check in  and got a free drink.  Not much more to really say, they got their own parking lot and is just minutes away from  the Reno casinos in downtown.
Review Source:If you're looking for a good burger, look no further. The pattie is juicy and totally not dried out, with fresh toppings. Â Fries are good too. Â If you're not in the mood for a burger, the chicken quesadilla isn't bad either. Â What I like about this place is you can get a good burger (or a chorizo benedict if you're in the mood for breakfast) 24/7. It's fab! The chocolate mousse cake is also divine, especially a la mode! Â Hey, to all you New Year's resolutioners, go big or go home.
The only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the service is hit or miss. Â It's either great or pretty bad, there's no middle ground on this spectrum.
And don't forget to check in on your Yelp app to get the free soda or tea!
Archie's is definitely the best place near the UNR campus to get food and drinks 24/7.
Archie's has good burgers and fries, and there is a perpetual 2-for-1 deal for UNR and TMCC students. I always ordered Archie's Giant Cheeseburger without mustard, which comes out greasy and delicious but with a huge hunk of onion slices that you have to pick apart yourself (unless you really love onions an awful lot). The burger comes with a large side of hot, thick fries and ranch dressing for dipping. There is nothing I could want more at 3 a.m. after a night of partying, or at 11 p.m. after a hard day of school or work. In order to quality for the burger deal, you both have to order drinks, so I would recommend their margaritas. They are large, sour, sweet and very strong. Just perfect.
In addition to that, the "Go Big Blue" blue cheese burger is also really good, and Archie's serves breakfast all day, too.
During the day, there's a quaint little first floor to brunch in, but all of the fun nighttime festivities take place upstairs and, during the summer, on the upstairs deck. They also have a pool table, jukebox and video poker machines built into the bar. I have had many a fun night at Archie's.
And the staff is usually nice, attentive and helpful.
The main downside to Archie's is that -- surprise -- it often houses people who are drunk out of their minds. I used to go at the same time every week, and there was always the same drunk guy sitting at the bar who would, like clockwork, fly off the handle, start shouting at the bartender and have to have his friend escort him down the treacherous stairs. The stairs, by the way, are totally treacherous: when drunk, during the winter and in heels. I have also had to leap over a puddle of vomit that spanned the entire bottom step.
But, you know, it's a cool college bar, and that's basically what I expect. Plus, I would make a lot of sacrifices for a place that serves good burgers and margaritas 24 hours a day.
This place is great for college students. Be that it is close to the UNR campus. They say the burgers are great but I used a Groupon and got the Chicken Fried Steak and Eggs. It was a huge portion and cooked to perfection. The chicken was crispy and well cooked. I went to Archie's late night and it had people upstairs hanging out but the downstairs was empty. I heard the burgers are famous and they have great deals for college students and for happy hour so make sure to visit her if you want to have a good time with some good food.
Review Source:Our new favorite breakfast place! Â We came upon Arcie's as we were walking to see the Balloon Races. Â We had a couple bloody marys, and enjoyed the view. Â We liked it so much, we can back for brunch later in the morning. Â Our servers were sassy and fun, and they worked together to make sure everyone got great service, even though it was a busy pre-game crowd. Â I had the biscuits and gravy, and it's one of the best. Â The sausage gravy has actual pieces of sausage in it. Â The biscuit is substantial, and well made. Â Hashbrowns were crisp, as well. Â My husband had a cheeseburger and enjoyed it immensely. Â We will come back to this place, fun, hip, and great views of the college and a lot of Reno.
Review Source:I stopped here with a big group of friends and ordered a burger and margarita. Archie's was clean and dark, and the food came out quickly. I can't remember anything outstanding about the burger, but my margarita was just the right amount of sweet and strong, and I loved that they didn't rim the glass with salt.
I can picture myself hanging out here if I went to UNR. This was a really nice place to grab a bite after work and just relax!
I continue to eat my way through Reno one restaurant at a time.
I came here for an early bite to eat at the suggestion of a friend. We were the only people in the restaurant on a Sunday night around 5pm, which I found a little weird.
The empty restaurant made for speedy service and quick food. I was suffering from a hangover, so I decided to take it easy and get the chicken tenders and fries. The food came out in less than 10 minutes. It was a basket full of thick cut fries, and 4 huge chicken tenders.
The prices were good, the food was OK, and the service was great. I would give this 4 stars, but there was just something about the decor of the restaurant I didn't like. It was very stark, and for some reason that made me feel unwelcome. I like to feel like I'm in a down-home environment when I go out to eat, and the ambiance just wasn't there.
Fantastic outdoor patio/balcony! Â Both shade and sun. Great views. Plenty of seating without feeling crowded.
Huge portions! Â Ordered the chicken fried steak which I never order because I am picky about gravy. Â The sausage gravy was delicious! The eggs were slightly undercooked but not that big of a deal.
Super friendly staff! Â A little behind at times with bringing water or the bill, but great people that really wanted to be there.
$3.50 Bloody Marys all day Sunday. Â Mimosas were not on the menu, and I didn't pay the bill so I am not sure how much they ran each, but they are made with fresh squeezed orange juice. Yum!
Look forward to coming back next time I'm in Reno visiting friends.
Came here quite some time ago due to a Groupon and was glad to have discovered it; it's a really great diner / college hang out. Been back several times since that Groupon and have consistently enjoyed our experiences. Very glad I live so far away, or I'd be hanging out here all the time, eating and drinking more than what's good for me.
Archies is almost like two restaurants in one; the calm, squeaky clean, quiet, easy going diner downstairs, and the crazy, cluttered, loud and fun late night hang out upstairs. We've been here both early morning and late at night and the ambiance is amazingly different depending on when you visit. Both upstairs and downstairs are each great in their own way, it just depends on what you're looking for. Either atmosphere you choose, you'll get solidly good food and great service.
Breakfast has consistently been a hearty, yummy plateful of excellent value, and the sloppy, savory late night burgers sure hit the spot after you've had a couple of beers. Brilliant fries and onion rings, too.
So whatever you're looking for - a quiet spot for a nice, early morning breakfast, or a fun place to bring a gaggle of friends to play pool and get your burgers and drink on - Archies is your place.
At $9.50 for a burger/fries, I was surprised because I thought this was a college bar, but the burger is worth every penny. If there was a giant line at the Nugget diner and I was craving a burger, this would be the choice. Actually I would go here again just for the burger. The mildly spicy mayo on the regular cheeseburger seemed to make the difference, but the meat was tasty and fresh ground and everything was super fresh. Throw in the cute college girl who helped me out at the counter and was super friendly and it made for a great lunch. Every baseball game also as they have the MLB package. Onion bun and seasoned fries give Nugget the slight edge, but this is a worthy contender.
Review Source:GREAT breakfast, and the price is right! Get the Basco Benedict- chorizo and jalapenos, wow!! Huge breakfast burrito, tasty breakfast sandwich, massive pancakes. So good. Can't go wrong with breakfast 24/7. Friendly staff, great service, I hear the mimosa's are good. Haven't had a bad experience here yet, and I don't think I will.
Review Source:Why in the heck do we eat so much breakfast? Â Who cares...we had to try a new place and somehow we found ourselves near Archies. Â We tried it. Â It's a college place. Â Hung over, sorta better than you, early 20 somethings trying to figure out how to fairly split two pieces of French Toast between five people.
The food was good, but not killer memorable or anything I really need to drive across town to have. Â However I wouldn't mind going again.
I came here with a Groupon. I was originally trying to come here for breakfast, but we woke up late and were craving some burgers. The architecture of the building is pretty cool. It's two stories tall and both levels have their own entrance, so it was a little confusing as to which one to enter through. The bottom one seemed to be closed though and we noticed people eating in the patio up top, so that's where we went. When we walked inside, there was just one person working. It was the bartender/waiter and he was serving the people outside, so it took him about 5 minutes to actually greet us and sit us down.
We ordered:
*"Go Big Blue" Burger ($8.99) - 1/2 lb. burger topped with tangy melted blue cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions. +Fries
*South of the Border ($9.99) - 1/2 lb. burger with Ortega chilies, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and grilled onions. +Onion Ring upgrade ($1.95)
The "Go Big Blue" burger looked delicious, but the melted blue cheese was just an overkill. I ended up scraping it all out and eating the burger with the strong trace of blue cheese leftover and it tasted much better. The meat was very juicy and the fries were perfectly browned and crisp. I actually asked them if they had garlic fries and the waiter/bartender had them throw some minced garlic over my fries, free of charge, so that was an added bonus. The onion rings that came with the South of the Border burger were huge! They actually made the burger look kind of small (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fs3-media2.ak.yelpcdn.com%2Fbphoto%2FroIJtxVVvmyrhQRuhtMxgw%2Fl.jpg&s=f65ee83bc02d958b8d498385dbf1ca29ac3d6f8952ac5ce911352e68543f6446" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://s3-media2.ak.yelp…</a>). They were thick, crunchy on the outside, well battered, slightly greasy (good thing), and juicy on the inside. I liked the South of the Border burger a lot more than my Go Big Blue burger. Each bite was like a fiesta in my mouth. I really love burgers with avocado and it went really well with the chilies and grilled onions. It was a very flavorful burger.
All in all, I'm definitely a fan of this place. The meals are decently priced and they have a lot of promotions. It's also open 24 hours, so you can satisfy your cravings whenever you want.
Tips:
-Look out for a Groupon
-$3.50 Bloody Marys every Sunday all day long
-$3.50 margaritas every Monday, all day long
-$2 domestic pints all day every Thursday
-Happy Hour every day from 4pm-6pm
-$4.99 breakfast specials Mon-Fri w/ bevvy purchase
-Nevada Students and Faculty receive 2-for-1 Burgers ALL DAY, EVERY DAY (UNR or TMCC ID needed)
I have heard about Archie's for years and finally gave them a try.
Service was great, we were waited on immediately and the waitresses kept the drinks topped off and checked back often enough without being annoying.
I had the burger with bacon and cheese and it was one of the better burgers I had in a long time. Â Fries were ok, wife had the chicken sandwich and a salad, both of which were excellent.
I'll have to come in and have breakfast one of these days.
"We serve breakfast 24/7!"
FUC. YES. Those four little words all college students love to hear. It was 11am, I was starving, and the pork masitas I had packed for lunch really wasn't doing it for my taste buds.
We walk in, it's a typical diner feel. Apparently there is an upstairs - did not investigate. Took a seat and ordered the biscuits and gravy combo; half a biscuit and sausage gravy, two eggs any style, and your choice of bacon or sausage. Obviously, I chose bacon.
Archie's is your typical diner college food. It's better than the shit they serve at the cafeteria whatever, but not as good as...well...5th Street, for example. I'm going to go out on a limb and hypothesize that their convenient location to UNR may have something to do with how they continue to get business. What's odd is that they're fucking expensive - $9 for my plate! Are you kidding me? I got a fruit and yogurt bowl for $5 at Old Granite Street, which included in-house made yogurt and granola, and the freshest of all fresh fruits that tasted like they grew out back in a magical garden and were picked before it landed on my plate. This - this is diner food, and you're charging me $9? Wow.
Also, it seems the cooks don't understand what "I don't want runny whites" means for eggs. Or the server wasn't able to relay it correctly. Either way, communication was lost and my whites were runny. They're eggs, people, not a physics exam.
If you're hungover with money to burn on greasy food (uh, just go to McD's or Beto's, it's at least five bucks cheaper...) and your walk of shame is long enough to warrant a pit stop, then come to Archie's. Your pounding headache should remove any care in the world about what you're about to spend close to $10 for.
We stayed in Reno during the weekend of one of the worst storms and wanted a good breakfast place to eat before we headed back to the Bay area. This place was recommended by my cousin who use to go to University of Nevada.
I ordered the chicken fried steak with eggs and boy was it hearty and good. Actually cured my slight hangover from the night before from drinking Hennessey and Jager.
Definitely recommend this place for breakfast before heading home because it definitely fills you up until lunch.
The three stars says it all. Â My southwestern omelette with linguica, bell peppers, pico de gallo, and jalapenos was decent but nothing really to rave about. Â The breakfast burrito was just as mediocre. Â
I tell you what I'd be doing cartwheels and spread eagles for though: Â the $3.50 for Bloody Marys all day on Sundays!!
Unfortunately, the last time we went there on a Sunday, the service sucked. Â We never had our water or coffee refilled until we had our bill given to us. Â A little snarky comment from us did get our coffee on the house. Â Big deal. Â I'd rather have the Bloody Mary on the house! Â As a result of that day, my bf doesn't want to go there again. Â I guess I'll have to sneak away on a "store run" to get my Bloody Mary fix.
Tried the Hot Cake Special with over medium eggs & bacon. Â Hot cakes were huge but bland and not enough syrup to even cover a third of them. Â Eggs were fine but the bacon was a salt lick (I understand bacon is salty but not this salty.) Â I did not find the breakfast expensive but I also didn't think it was special enough to bring me back.
Also I agree with Micaela M.'s review about the remodel. Â I remember coming to Archie's when it looked like a diner back in '95 and I liked the feel and late night grub. Â Now it is just ok.
Archie's was an ok place to eat. Â I have had better burgers for less at other places, but the service wasn't too bad. Â The burgers are fairly pricey, but if you are eating with a friend, and one of you goes to UNR, you can get your burgers BOGO (Buy One, Get One free) with your UNR ID. Â
I am trying hard to figure out what to say about this place, mostly because I don't think anything really stood out. Â I had ordered the Go Big Blue! burger, and found it somewhat dry, but still much better than a fast food burger. Â The fries were tasty, but nothing to write home about. Â
Overall, three stars for being average, I would eat there again.
The food were was very good and great. even though the burgers are a little pricey like $9.95 for a burger and fries, it was very very very good and worth the price. It was juicy and pretty big. It was a half pounder burger. I hae to admit the service was awesome. The girl who works there was pretty on top of that and said you were very welcome. Â Overall a great experience and can not wait to eat there again.
Review Source:Came here on another Reno trip and verdict is: Â still delish. Â Their beer battered onion rings are still a favorite of mine. Â This time, my dining companion went for one of their chocolate malts and loved it. Â I had a taste of it and agree--totally scrumptious. Â
So, I'm still a fan. Â
The only weird thing was we tried to go on an early Monday evening and found them closed--even though, according to their posted hours, they should have been open. Â I'm guessing it was a fluke? Â Other than that--still rockin'.
I've been to Archie's several times. Â Having seen/tasted a pretty good sample of their food and service, it is just okay, not great by any means. Â I like the upstairs portion of Archie's -- I hate the lower level "diner" area. Â Upstairs has a nice view of the surrounding mountains. Â
I've had their breakfasts several times -- usually eggs, potatoes, bacon -- it has been pretty standard. Â I once ordered the biscuits and gravy -- the gravy was just luke-warm -- had to send it back.
Today I had the "giant" cheeseburger for lunch -- it was ok -- although a bit greasy and messy for my taste. Â My husband had the South of the Border burger which featured an ortega chili, avacado, and grilled onions. Â The burger was so wet with the aforementioned ingredients that it almost immediately fell apart when he started eating it -- he had to resort to eating the entire mess with a fork and knife. Â It looked really unappealing. Â
Go for the view, go for a drink and pool, but don't go just for the food, cuz you might end up disappointed!
I liked Archie's but not enough to give it four stars.
I got a burger and a salad. They let you substitute a salad for French fries for $2 extra. I decided to eat healthier and went with the salad. It was huge. And the ingredients were fresh. It was a nice surprise.
Kind of a cute moment. Before deciding on the salad, I asked the waitress what the soup was and couldn't figure out what the waitress said. Then it dawned on me she pronounced minestrone with an long I like in mine and the second syllable as uh.
I liked the burger, and I might get it again if I went there, but I wouldn't go out of my way for an Archie's burger. Just nothing special about it.
When I commute with fiance to Reno he drops me off here. Â He starts work at 5am! Â I am glad that the upstairs is open till 7 am and I can get some studying done. Â This is an awsome place to see dawn patrol for the balloon races if you do not want to get stuck among the crowd. Â I like that they have 2 for 1 burgers with student ID and they also have a frequent diner card too. Â Archie's is great!
Review Source:Archies was the first burger I had on my hamburger road trip across America on my return trip to the East Coast. Â It wasn't bad, but it didn't wow me.
I ordered the "South of the Border" Burger, cooked medium (the waitress said it could be cooked rare so I ordered it rare, but I'm not going to hold it against the chef since all burgers are cooked to medium). Â The 1/3 pound patty came with lettuce, tomato, grilled onions, green chilies and avocados cushioned between a standard pair of toasted burger buns. Â Even though it was medium, it still had a torrent of juices that demolished the bun. Â On the downside though, the burger rather slightly under-seasoned. Â Also, some people may like all the toppings, but I found that there were just too many of them and they were distracting. Â A green chili cheeseburger would've been good. Â A burger "California-style" with avocado would've worked too. Â But putting everything together? Â The surplus of toppings seems to appeals more to gluttony rather than good taste.
Overall though, not a bad burger; it's a notch above your standard Chili's/Applebee's burger, but then again I wouldn't plan  on going to Chili's or Applebee's ever.
Good spot GREAT view..
The western burger is not "10+" dollars, it's $8.99
Its a fine point, but a big difference....since I do not spend 10 dollars on ANY burger in this town, no need to.
Plenty of parking,at least enough for all but the busiest days,
the upstairs is the bar/grill spot, downstairs is like a different place , but they do have beer there too.
It's the closest bar to my house I go there often and like it just fine.
*UPDATE* 6-19-09 Â (where the heck is the update button?,can't find it now, I have B-4??)
It seems someone got uptight about my choice to offer an alternative to their (year old) review, including the stated price at Archies, (apparently, according to her, I'm a "douchebag", and cheap too, lol,I have been called worse )
My point was the burgers here are NOT EXPENSIVE, they are on par with what you would expect to pay anywhere in this town. As compared to "10+" (dollars) for a burger, which would be out of the norm for this town, and would keep many people from even trying a place for themselves.
Seems the whole point of this site is to inform, good and bad about details of merchants and restaurants, but in this case referring to the content of another review makes one a "Douchebag" then OK, I resemble that remark :P
As a prolific poster, I would think Krista E would support additional comments, as compared to taking it in what appears to be personal.
Perhaps this site serves a different role for some than I thought when I found it.
I'm new on here and this is a bit of a turn off right away
Ralph C.'s review hits the on the head and nice cardiological reference! Â I had about 1/5 of an Archie's Giant Bacon Cheeseburger this morning because that's about all I could eat. Â Now anyone can make a giant cheeseburger but to do it well is a whole other ball game. Â Archie delivers. Â
I highly recommend ordering the Texas Toothpicks and their Bloody Marys.
This rating is based on the hamburgers alone. They are freakin huge and piled with goodies. Probably the I don't know what they do to their patties, but they are so juicy and delish. Be sure to try the onion rings, which you can substitute for instead of fries. A burger and fries costs about $7 or $8 if I remember right, but it's worth it if you want to get away from all that fast food crap. I haven't had breakfast yet, though I hear it's good. Remember they only stay open till about 3 p.m. each day.
