I came to Barhs after a hot beach day , mostly because of the view and distance from Sandy Hook.

We started off with the steamers which were, ehhh, terrible. The clams were cold and gritty and tasted borderline rotten. The broth was also cold and flavorless.

For my main I got the clam roll, which I wasn't looking forward to after the steamers. The breading on the clams was oily and was falling off. When you bit into the main body of the clam, it turned into a wet mess in my mouth (think soggy bread). Practically inedible.

When I walked inside to use the restroom, I was overwhelmed by a horrible mildew/mold smell that engulfed the whole restaurant. This could have been residual damage from Hurricane Sandy, but over six months later you would expect that it would have been able to recover in that time.

The only thing that is keeping me from giving Bahrs a one star is the great service. Our waitress was kind, attentive and quick.

I really WANT to like this place; it has a great location and vibe. The food, however, did not cut it. It is a shame given its location that it doesn't utilize the great seafood that the Jersey Coast has to offer.

I used to go here a lot many years back. Frankly, I forgot about it. Wanting to do a day trip down the shore today, Bahr's popped up in my mind overnight and we went for lunch.

It is evident that they had little to do no damage from Superstorm Sandy. If they did, they are hiding it well. Maybe Sandy Hook in front of it took the brunt and spared it.

It was quite good. Both my wife and I had Manhattan Clam Chowder and it was very good. Seasoned well. I ordered broiled scallops with french fries and my wife had steamers. The french fries were seasoned, needed no salt and the portion was reasonable (not a lot). For me, that is good.

Bahr's is off exit 117A of the Garden State Parkway and maybe a ten mile trip down Route 36.

The bill came to $68 with tip. I thought the steamers at $19.95 were a bit pricey, but - all in all - pretty much in line.

I am on a mission to find or re-find restaurants that can become regular events for our family. We put Bahr's on the list.
