The food was good the service was not. We waited 20 mins before the waiter came to our table. Â When our food came about 40 min after ordering, it was cold. The burger still tasted great cold, I just imagine how good it could have been had the burger been warmer. With so many great burgers in SD, I would not go back again because the service is just not there.
Review Source:New Zealand beef- all organic- fresh baked bread. It was really good and they were really busy for a week night! I didn't mind the lack service because it allowed me to scarf down my burger like it was my last meal on earth. I hate when waitresses come by to ask how your meal when you just stuffed your mouth with a huge bit of food. Being a chick... That can be embarrassing!
This is the place of the $6+ burger.... Cool part was I got a larger sized beer then normal because they ran out of  regular glasses. The Bareback Amber Ale was good... I wanted to try their New Zealand brew on tap, but it was all out. That's how busy they were!
I liked this place. We walked all over PB looking for somewhere to get dinner our last night and this is where we ended up going. It was crowded but not overly crowded like most of the other places around there wee. We sat outside which was fun because you're really close to the beach and there is lots of good people watching. We got the hot young tenders (boneless wings) and they were sooooooooo good. I don't know what kind of sauce they used but they were to die for. I would come back solely for those. We also tried the lamb burger and the bare lass chicken sandwich. The bare lass was pretty bland but the lamb burger was really good. We also tried a couple different beers per the recommendation of our server. The first one was really good it was a pale ale but the second one I couldn't really drink because we were pretty full. I'd go back here but I'd probably try different burgers/sandwiches.
Review Source:Craft beer + great food + great service = Â smiles all around.
This place has become a rock-solid go-to for me in the last couple of years and a spot in North PB that more people (from locals to PB tourists to 'real' tourists) should enjoy.
For visitors / those here during the day, the location is right off the beach and you CAN bring your kids in here for lunch, as well as 'come as you are' if you're in your boardshorts and a hat. Ample seating and a small outdoor patio (which you can eat on too) if you want to people watch or get some sun.
At night, it's more of the same, but better. Bare Back is a great place to jump off your night with some grub or spend a few hours at while catching up with old and new friends. It's casual, but not a 'dive' in the sense that it's trashed, smells dank or there's a bunch of crap all over the place. You can bring your folks here for dinner, a date with a nice young lady or just hang out with the fellas. There's always a friendly vibe and room to walk around without it having that empty feel. The later it gets, the more people are there for drinks than food, but they do serve pretty late into the night.
It's not a 'sports bar', but there are TV's showing whatever popular games are on and usually a surf video or two. Tables free up quick and it's well worth the rare, short wait to get seated.
The craft beer list rotates as soon as one keg runs dry (which is awesome) and there's something for everyone on tap, including Bud Light if that's your taste. For those into craft cocktails, they have those here too and their version of the Mule (served in a copper mug) seems to be a favorite among many. I'm a beer guy though and they definitely come through in that department. And while people rave about the burgers, the Dirty Jerz chicken sandwich is usually my go-to on the menu.
Good food, especially for breakfast and the chicken sandwich at lunch. Â Enjoy their regular and sweet potato fries with BBG sauce. Â
Good prices, especially for Mimosas. Â
Good location near the water but no view. Â I go here several times a year and enjoy the outdoor row of patio seats at the high-top counter/table.
What. the. heck. My queenstown fave burger was so bland I was in shock. The bread tasted like nothing (air, really, not salty, focaccia-y or anything) and the patty was completely unseasoned. I dunked each bite in ketchup and was able to finish just half my burger.
Service was good but those burgers were simply depressing.
Burger was so-so. Cooked to a perfect juicy medium rare, but meat lacks flavor.
Sweet potato fries were good, but had too much salt. Blue cheese was delicious.
The beer was cold, but not worth $7/pint
Service was fast and friendly at first, fizzled out after the food was delivered. Never checked to see how it tasted or offered anything else until my plate and glass were empty.
Fortunately, Dirty Birds is right up the street where I enjoyed some chicken wings, another beer and the last couple innings of the Padres beating the Rockies in extra innings.
BEST of everything in Pacific Beach!!! Â i love love love the organic and original menu. the hamburgers are exactly what every true hamburger lover dreams of, in one word PERFECT! the staff is exceptional, hats off to you guys who clearly know what your doing and your passion shines through in everything you do.
Review Source:Went here this weekend and got the burger of the month - so delicious! My friend got the lamb burger which was also very tasty. We also got their sweet potato fries, which were yummy.
A bit pricey, it doesn't come with a side, just a couple pieces of chips. You have to order fries separately. The service was pretty good, our waitress handled our large party very well and separated everyone's checks, which was very nice.
Came here for the drinks and good times. Sit outside if you can so you can people watch and enjoy the nice weather. Their beers are decently priced if you come during happy hour, otherwise they run about $6/glass or a little more. It wasn't packed when we came but service was a little slow, but we forgive!
Review Source:I've seen this place on various visits to San Diego, and I've always wanted to try it. I finally made it in on my last visit, and while the food and drink were great, the service was awful.
When my boyfriend and I arrived, there was no hostess or anyone by the door, so we thought it was seat yourself. Everything was taken, so we grabbed a seat at the bar near a table that was getting ready to leave. When we tried to take the table, the bartender said we had to put our name on the list. Not a big deal, but it would have been nice to have someone at the door kind of directing things.
They had some interesting sounding cocktails, including one with Sriracha, but I stuck with beer. We were seated at an actual table after a short wait and ordered. I went with the Wake and Bake, a fish taco sandwich, my boyfriend went with the Hot Young Tenders, and we split an order of fries. My sandwich was really good, and it was interesting (in a good way) to have a fish taco on a sourdough sandwich instead of a tortilla. The fish was a little too greasy though, and I think I would have liked it better grilled. My boyfriend's chicken was really tasty, and the BBG sauce had the perfect kick. We barely touched the fries, but that was only because we were stuffed. They had a good crisp and were well seasoned. I also liked that they were on the skinny side.
If our service had been decent, I definitely would have given this place 4 stars. Unfortunately, our waitress was MIA most of the night. We were at BBG for almost 2 hours, mostly because we had to wait forever to get our waitress's attention. We definitely would have probably had some more drinks, but after having to wait so long to just get one refill, we ended up calling it a night. I would understand if it was super busy, but it wasn't that crowded, and in the time that we were there, 2-3 other tables around us came and went. Hopefully, this was just an off night for them. I think I'd still give it another chance, but it probably wouldn't be first on my list in the PB area.
walking by i saw "ORGANIC" and "LOCAL" and i decided to stop in with my husband,
I had been craving sweet potato fries and he has been craving a burger so why not .
it was pretty good. my husband said the tomato on his burger was soo good that it tasted like bacon .. what ever that means. i will def stop by again when in the area!
This is a really fun place to have a meal! Â There is a good atmosphere here and the staff are really nice. Â Afterwards you can check out the beach as it's only a block away!
I had the lamb burger which was very good. Â It was cooked medium as requested. Â The lamb was juicy and had good flavor. Â The bun was also very good. Â Overall I like this burger more than your typical fast food burgers but not as good as a wild boar burger at Crazy Burger. Â The shoestring fries are excellent. Â I much prefer these to the typical fast food fries as these are thinner and have more crunch and flavor.
Let me say-try to make happy hour and save some cash :)
Had the queenstown burger and the bbg sauce is super yummy- the aioli is not(but i dont like mayo).
theses burgers are juicy, tons of flavor and perfectly cooked! one of the best I have had
HOWEVER at 10 bucks for a burger that doesnt come with fries. . .thats a little steep. the fries for a large are about 6 dollars and my husbands beer was 7 (stone).
but keep in mind its organic, etc which often results in higher prices. Will i come back? yes! Do I recommend? yes! but due to price I may not be back often and it isnt THE best burger in town its just a really really good one.
ps- great location and to save money you could always split a burger and large fry(if you arent starved it should be plenty for  two)
Probably the best burgers in PB. Â Definitely my go-to if I'm craving a good burger or chicken sandwich (actually the tilapia sandwich is delicious too!). Â The servers and bartenders always seem to be real nice, helpful, and patient. Â Can't ask for more than that. Â Love the location too. Â Their sister joint down in OB, Raglan Public House, is a fun place and has pretty much the same delicious menu (except I think Bareback doesn't have the delicious pretzel app... Nom!).
Review Source:Great location and I was in great company.
As a vegetarian, they had a delicious black bean burger.
My only complaint why i had to take away a star is that it took absolutely forever to get our food and by no fault of their own, they have shoestring fries which are super fulfilling to me, LOL.
drinks were great, food yummy, but the time it took to get the food left me hungry and we went to five guys for some fries afterwards, LOL. Sorry bare back grill.
This place is AMAZING!!!
Pros:
-Delish burgers! - grilled holy roller! Filling but doesn't make you want a nap after eating!
-tater tots! - *heavenly*
- they play surf videos
- über friendly staff
- great beer selection
Cons:
- a little on the pricy side
- drafty- so bring a sweater:)
When you first walk in, you're not really sure what to do because there's nobody to greet you. There's a line? What's happening? Don't worry! There's a small little board when you walk in on the left side and you write your name with chalk. Then, just wait, unless... if there's open seating, grab it!
The place is super chill and you can just kick-back and enjoy the Australian-themed joint.
The staff is really nice, just ask them if you have any questions. I wasn't sure whether or not I would like the lamb burger because of the aftertaste and one of the waiters told me if I was worried then just grab one of the regular burgers. (I had a taste of the lamb burger after, and it wasn't game-y. Good to know!) I like that they are really honest and don't try to sell you anything.
I ended up with the Ahi Salad because I wasn't really feeling a burger in the first place. Delicious. I really like the vinaigrette! The tuna was seared just right and they gave a really generous portion! I would've liked for the slices to be more fine or cubed because I don't want to have to cut the tuna any further but that's just personal preference.
Yummm...
Another great casual PB spot near the water to satisfy your taste buds then wash it all down with a great spirit. I was skeptical of yet another burger joint, but I've had some apps, some of their sandwiches, and some of their salads and been very happy every time. As for drinks - they've got a great wall of options, and will also make you anything random you ask for - always mixed or poured to perfection.
The bartenders and cocktail waitresses are all really friendly and do everything they can to make your visit as awesome as possible. Their patio area is kept warm and great for people watching on any night the college kids are out and partying (sorry, but we've all been there). Â
If you're looking for a casual PB hangout, this is one of few I really honestly love anymore. Their sister restaurant in OB, Raglan, is really awesome too.
Ive always wanted to try this place, and finally came here once with my friend. I got the sheilas cracked of course due to the fried egg.. Â the burger was good, but nothing too special. i got a side of coleslaw, but it was kind of dry..
I don't remember if the beer deals were good.. i think it was something like buying a certain amount of burgers would make a pitcher of beer cheaper? not sure..
but i mean the place was pretty busy so im sure ppl like it here. for me, it didn't do me too much justice.
The burger was huge though and the place had a nice vibe to it.
Consider this a Top-10 burger joint in San Diego. A lot of these gourmet burger restaurants have exploded in the county in the last couple years and these guys are one of the best for sure!
My Plate: Hogs & Heffers Burger
My Other Plate: Bare, Big & Dirty Burger
The Difference Maker: The Fries
There is nothing really bad about this place and I don't come here as much as I would like too. The only reason for the missed 5* is because i'm not sure if I should give a very healthy organic restaurant 5* when i'd rather have a greasy unhealthy stack of nachos, or burger.
What the do have is amazing. I am a big fan of their beef burgers and tuna burgers as well. The sweet potato fries are also on-point.
After taking a walk on the Pacific beach , I wanted to try something greasy but healthy lol. There are so many options in the pacific beach area. After some research I zeroed it doen on the bareback grill.
Since it was late afternoon the place wasn't very busy and the server was quick to take my order. They had this lamb special burger which I ordered along with onion rings. They serve organic beef and all natural chicken, lamb and veggies, that is why they are little expensive.
Coming to the food, my lamb burger was OK but nothing special about it. It was kind of dry. The onion rings wee good. The whole meal was $20 and some change, I would skip this place if I am looking for a great burger!
This is a bitter, sweet review.
Bitter - because I don't want to give away my local, weekly spot and cause it to be too busy...
Sweet - because it's the best food in PB.  I'm  gluten free I am not looked at with crossed-eyes when I omit a bun from my meal.  I am at Bare Back weekly and the food and serve are always spot on. Â
I'd say don't go here so that I don't have to wait for a table but I'd be denying my inner carnivore not to recommend Bare Back to everyone. Â Keep it up guys!!!
They had lots of specials ("buy a pitcher, get a burger free") which were nice options. Â
They ran out of pitchers but gave us the equivalent pints- no worries. 2 of the pints had gnats floating in them. Â (we later saw more gnats in the bathroom, so it wasn't a complete fluke)
Service was polite but very slow. Closing our ticket took a long time and it wasn't swamped on a Tuesday night.
Food was decent. With all the burger places around, traveling to the beach area and fighting traffic won't have me beating a path for it, but the lamb burger, without the BBG sauce was nice. I think all the toppings muddled the flavors. Â The bleu cheese cancelled out tasting the ailoi and the mint sauce wasn't very "minty" (and fresh mint always compliments lamb). More sauces just meant more calories and not getting to really enjoy the distinct flavors.
Btw, ladies, they have a latch on the bathroom door that isn't immediately apparent. Â You don't have to barricade the door with the side table found in the restroom just look up. (found out the hard way before I barricaded the door, but saw that other girls after me were doing the same thing). LOL
A Solid 8 out of 10
I love lamb, and Amanda (I think that was the waitress' name) hooked me up with one of the best burgers I have ever had. She told me it was what the staff ate; it was a lamb burger with some spicy sauce, jalepenos and the usual veggies (similar to the kiwilango). The lamb is fantastic; if you've been to Australia/New Zealand and know what really good lamb tastes like, this is pretty damn close. The fries are awesome as well.
Beer is great. They have their own brews and they're unfiltered, at least the ones I have. Gives you a real 'bite you in the ass' feel with an unfiltered beer and big juicy lamb burger.
Not the fastest service, but hey, it's crowded and it's pacific beach. The food and drink is well worth the wait.
Were here for some beer with friends. I was afraid to drink the beer here because the glasses they bring over to us were still wet and it had a funny smell in it. The first pitcher of beer tasted not so bad, but the 2nd one they brought over to us tasted like hot dog. Honestly, I think they just rinsed the pitcher and put the next beer we ordered into the same pitcher. Blah, I didn't drink anything cause they have serious sanitation issues.
Additionally, the service is extremely slow here. We ordered a burger to go for a friend who was too tired to come out to join us. The burger took 20 minutes to come and when we asked for it; we waited another 10 minutes before we got it.
Tip: Make sure you have a strong stomach if you're coming here.
The plus side is that they have their own beer and they are delicious options.
The down side is that is is a very small restaurant so you will probably have to wait. Also the food is.... average. The ideas behind the food are intriguing but the execution is just not there for the price. Go here for a drink and maybe to split an app.
I am so happy that I found this place on Yelp. Â My friends were from Japan and Taiwan, and they want to experience American bar. Â I took them here, and THEY LOVE IT!!!!!!! Â The sweet potato fries was delicious, and the beer is good! Â We ordered 1 beer set. Â That was 4 small cups of beer with different flavor.
I tried the black bean burger (vegetarian-style), yummmmm!!!!!! Â I never knew vegetarian burger could be so delicious. Â
After so many positive comments, I love this place and recommend to everyone, but I don't see the reason for giving 5 stars! Â May be I will for the next visit.
Sorry yelpers. You have let me down.
Very rarely does yelp reviews let me down, but this is a prime example. We went to Bare Back Grill expecting pretty good hamburgers and especially a good lamb burger (had 50+ reviews mentioning it) and sweet potato fries.
We waited for a table which was actually a cool and hip atmosphere. Nice tables, good music, good vibe. We were excited. We ordered drinks, I had a really good local draft beer. So far so good!
So we took the advice of reviews and ordered a lamb burger, a cheeseburger, sweet potato fries and onion rings. All of these items had very good reviews.
Our rings and fries came early with the "famous" aioli sauce. Nothing special about the sweet potato fries and but the O-rings were delicious and were tasty. Now the aioli was nothing special. Mayo + horseradish... yuck. Seriously, just stick with ketchup.
So we said, ok, no problems, burgers on their way!!! Burgers came and looked delicious. A+ for the focaccia bread, that was a very nice touch. My burger, however, was just OK. Small slice of cheese and was cooked well. It was, however, BORING!! It needed seasoning and a little pizzaz. It supposedly had a special BGG sauce, but I couldn't taste it. I didn't finish the burger. Don't get me wrong though, it was OK, just not a $10.90 hamburger.
Now on to the lamb burger. So this place is a "New Zealand burger" place and was voted best burger 4 years? That means LAMB, which my wife and I absolutely love ground lamb. So my first clue that it wasn't going to be up to snuff? The mint jelly. Anytime you go to a restaurant and order lamb and they offer mint jelly means they are not putting out good lamb. It's like going to a fish restaurant and ordering the fresh fish and you having to smother tartar sauce on the fish to make it edible. So we went with the yelp reviews and ordered it with the jelly and blue cheese (as is).
The lamb burger tasted like it had been sitting out all week and it was a "mutton" burger not a lamb burger. Not fresh or tasty. Very very GAMEY. Even with the ridiculous mint jelly on top it could not take the bite out of the gameness. When you order fish and it tastes like a fishing pier, it's not good fish. When you order lamb and it makes you cringe like you are eating a farm, nope, skip. NZ lamb is sometimes a touch gamey so I understand what they are up against, but you work with the ingredient to reduce the strength of the taste with spices and seasoning instead of mint jelly.
Sorry guys, maybe we caught this spot on an off night, but it was a weekend evening meal when there was a line 30 minutes long. You would expect them to be on top of their game during these prime time slots.
My wife and I both agreed that we should have gone to In-N-Out for a burger instead and only spend $10.00 for a good burger meal instead of $40.00.
