I gave Barley's a try at the suggestion of my friend Richard R. I figured he would have a good opinion on pizza since he is a Chi-Town native. My guess was accurate, the man knows his pizza.
We ordered an extra large Pepperoni and Sausage pizza. The crust was very good, the cheese tasted good and the pepperoni tasted good. Honestly, I was not wild about the sausage as it was the type that is cut in a sort of disk shape like a slightly thicker pepperoni. Next time I will replace it with another topping. The pizza was really good and the place has a pretty cool atmosphere. I did not drink any beer but I did see a ton of taps for draft beer.
The only thing I did not like were the garlic knots that we ordered. Those were pitiful actully, so save your money and do not order them. However, the pizza made up for it. I can definitely see myself coming back to this joint whenever I am in Greenville again. I give this place a thumbs up and suggest you give it a try.
For people 40+, they have a pretty cool little juke box with CD's from the 50's, 60's and 70's as well. That did not appeal very well to my 7 year old or my younger wife but I would have enjoyed some of the music selection had I been there with friends or something.
The service, although the waiter was not very friendly, was still pretty solid service. Although I was not impressed enough to give it that coveted 5 star rating, I can definitely see myself coming back to this joint whenever I am in Greenville again. I give this place a thumbs up and suggest you give it a try.
First of all, this review must be divided into 2 sections: food and drink. Food- I would actually not give 4 stars if that we're the only thing to consider. We started with the garlic knots, which left much to be desired. They were dry and rather flavorless. Â They required a lot of condiments to try to enjoy, so I gave up very soon in that endeavor and decided to use my allotted calories on the main dish: the calzone. Our waiter boasted the calzone as one of the best. It was okay. Not much to be excited about... Pretty run of the mill as far as I'm concerned.
Now for the better news. The 4- star news. The exciting portion of the evening. The BEER!!!! So many options! So many ways to enjoy a frosty beverage! I enjoyed that I could tell the waiter my beer preferences and he gave some very viable options to meet the mark. The mark was "son of a peach" and must say it was delightful! I will definitely be looking for it to enjoy on a more regular basis! So crisp and delish!
If you're a craft beer enthusiast, this is hands down the best place in town. Â Incredible selection, fair prices, and knowledgeable staff. That said, the pizza is also outstanding, and again, fairly priced. Â Great lunch specials, and they are also very family friendly.
PRO TIP: If you're ordering by the slice, you can't eat three.
Simply put: the best of the best. The beer selection is unrivaled in the upstate, and the sourdough-based pizza is 2 legit 2 quit. With its friendly & quirky staff, the pool tables and jukeboxes, I don't see how it could get much better. This is my favorite place in G'ville, bar none.
BTW my pals and I have developed a "bootleg" pizza menu, so feel free to order the following options:
1) The Super Mario - Italian sausage, portabella mushrooms, fresh basil
2) The Count Dracula - pepperoni, garlic, red onions
3) The Home Runs - bacon, jalapeno peppers, diced tomatoes
Barley's has an amazing tap selection. Coming from Canada, I wanted some fresh Quebecois ales. They had them. They had it all, actually. It's definitely the beer hub of the Upstate area.
The pizza is quite great too. It's great to go down the menu of beers and try out new stuff from all over the world. I even went to a special tasting night for Abita Beers and won a bunch of cool swag just for buying the beer.
Whenever I go to Greenville, I always stop at Barley's.
I was in Greenville on business and continued my never ending quest for interesting beer joints. Â Four stars on Yelp Brought me to the door of Barley's.
First impressions were great. 72 taps of nice choices. Â My second impression was even better as my bartender was Kendall and she was excellent. Â Cute, competent, and a great conversationalist makes for one great bartender!
Much has been said about the pizza. Â I was telling Kendall I was going to pass on it as it was just too much food for one person. Â A fellow patron overheard my comments and graciously offered me two slices of his! Â He had ordered the 14" Meat eater version. Â It goes for $19.50 and was delicious. Â One of the toppings was beefalo which was a nice touch.
Great pizza, great beer and great service. Â Four stars!
Definitely a fan. The beer list? Something to call home about, for sure. I love trying new beers, so this is a great place to go if you like beer.
The pizza is good, but the best thing I ate there was the black bean hummus. Loved it! Â The upstairs bar is good for big groups with pool and darts and the like.
Also, the kitchen is open later than most restaurants in Greenville, so if you're hungry at midnight, it may be the only place you can get food.
Missed out on the pizza that everyone is talking about, but tried a few local beers. Â The upstairs is a really nice spot to hang out with a big group. Â We played pool and darts and got to hang out. Â The bartender seemed a little annoyed with us, but we ordered a fair amount of beer and we definitely weren't out of control, so not sure what his deal was.
Review Source:Loud, crazy, fun place for happy hour drinks. Â The place was slammed the other night so it took over an hour to get the pizzas we had ordered. Â In addition the pizza order was messed up, but to their credit, they gave us another large pizza free of charge, apologized to everyone, and made it right. Â Fun place!
Review Source:What a piece of ****
never got to order food because my wife Lisa got carded.
Server and manager said it was South Carolina state law. Since Lisa didnt drive and had no ID, we promptly left and went around the corner. Â Had a wonderful meal at a table 301 place. It included delicious drinks.. This place s&*ks!
You locals are so lucky to have this place. I just loved it. A trend that I'm seeing among pizza snobs reviewing this place is that I'm not alone. (I'm from Philly and tend to prefer NY-style pizza.) A pizza joint that offers dairy free cheese is brilliant- my poor lactose intolerant, but pizza loving in-laws would be so happy to find this place- not to mention my vegan friends. Anyway, I got two slices, one with jerk tofu crumbles, and another with olives. The jerk tofu went really well with pizza, actually. And the crumbles didn't overwhelm the sauce/cheese.
I enjoyed my pizza so much that I had to get a jerk tofu sandwich to go. This was my first real experience with jerk flavoring, and I loved it. The problem was "to go" meant "to take on the plane" for me, and not only did I make a mess toting this sandwich through security (looked like a biohazard if you ask me), I probably annoyed half the plane by eating it on a wee little aircraft- the smell of that thing wafted. Embarrassed to be the moron on the plane, I scarfed it down like I'd stolen it. Thankfully for me, I didn't have anyone else sharing my cluster of plane seats. They'd have killed me and used me to make jerk tofu.
Anyway, it was spicy-sweet and really worth a try- especially, I'd argue, if you think you don't like tofu!
I had one of the local on-tap beers here too, and it was awesome.
If I lived anywhere near here I'd be here all the time, feasting on calorie laden American pub food with a hippie twist.
My wife and I decided to take a random trip to South Carolina one day. I wanted pizza and saw this place had really good reviews so I had to go. We went and it was so cold in the place we couldn't take our coats off. Pizza was good.At first I thought it was lacking flavor but I was wrong. I actually had to let it cool down a lot and then the flavors really come out. Would reccomend trying this place out.
Review Source:Barley's is a mini chain? Â I never knew: so good job, Barley's. Â A friend who lives in Greenville first took me to Barley's and I stop by there now whenever I find myself in town.
Likes: Â Solid pizza, fun atmosphere, tons of beers on draft.
Dislikes: Â I've been there when it's pretty crowded. Â And as with everywhere in Greenville, you cant always find free parking nearby and may have to walk a bit.
Take it or leave it: Â Take it. Â Solid pizza, fun place.
I've been in bars with more beer options(Charlotte). I've been in other Barley's restaurants (Knoxville). I've had better pizza(Chicago). All that said, this Barley's has a certain something... a mix of all the right ingredients. Every draft choice is superb. The bar was clean and cozy downstairs, loud and exciting upstairs. I didn't eat on this visit, but being from Knoxville, I've had Barley's pizza about fifty times. The service was fast and friendly. Located right off of Main Street, this Barley's has something for everyone, from pool tables, darts, and Foosball, to beer, more beer, and great atmosphere!
Review Source:Awesome place for Pizza!!! I'm a native Chicagoan and can be a bit of a pizza snob... but this is some of the best pizza I've found outside of Chicago. We enjoyed the outdoor seating during our visit and had a large half cheese / half sausage and pepperoni pizza that filled me, my wife, two young boys and grandma too!!!
Met some fantastic people here at the tables next to ours that made it really feel like an old school hang-out joint for friends. Looking forward to our next visit to Greenville and to Barley's for some more great pizza.
Came in for a late lunch and my friend wanted to sample some of their beers. Â We both ordered a slice of pizza and beer. Â
The pizza came and wasn't good, tasted stale and didn't look very appetizing. Â I then looked back into the kitchen and saw a large mound of pizza slices that had been made for the lunch crowd we had just missed.
So, let's get this straight, they pre make the pizza for people that order pizza by the slice, add whatever topping they want and put it back in the oven. Â WTF???? Â This was appalling, all the employees in the kitchen were milling around the pre cut pizza, it wasn't covered either, right out in the open, yuk!!!!!!!
I asked the waitress and she said they do that to help speed business through when their busy. Â Well this was about 3pm and they weren't busy, so the slices had been sitting there since before noon.
My friend said their pizza is normally good, so I gave them another chance by ordering a whole pizza, which the waitress assured me would be made fresh.
What a difference! Â The pizza was good and worth the wait. Â My advise, don't order a slice! Â The whole pizza is worth the extra wait and cooking time.
I've found my home very far away from home. Barley's has a beer selection to rival some of Atlanta's Taco Mac locations, and their bartenders know everything about everything. Top it off with the best pizza in SC and you've got a definite winner.
As you will read, you can get almost every beer in the world here. Ok, so at least it kinda feels like it when you walk in. If you're a true beer snob (yours truly) you may have trouble finding your niche favorites, but The Trappe Door is right downstairs for the Belgian lovers. Barley's hosts a wonderful selection of American craft brews that have made names for themselves and worked their way onto distribution lists - Left Hand, New Belgium, Highland, Victory, Rogue, Sweetwater, Terrapin, you get the point. You'll find a smattering of European beers as well. And be sure to check the upstairs bar if you can't find what you're looking for in the main dining room.
I've been here with large groups - 10-15 people - as well as just coming to the bar for a beer, and we had no issues with wait times (group dinners have been Thursday nights, ~15min wait) or service. Bartenders are very attentive, especially given the number of stools and size of the bar, which I've never seen even close to empty.
Their website hasn't been updated since 2009, so don't go there looking for the most recent arrivals on tap. I'm guessing the food menu is essentially the same, but you'll need to show up in person or give them a call to find out if your favorite beer has arrived yet.
As for food, the pizza is excellent. I haven't tried anything else because "taproom & pizzeria" translates to "if you want something besides beer and pizza go somewhere else". Not like they didn't warn you. As a recovering vegetarian I had a pizza with half meat lovers and half loaded with veggies, and both were delightful. I can't wait to go back and try something different. I think a calzone may be in order on Thursday...
I finally had some booze in South Carolina. It took a good three weeks, but Barley's was definitely a solid choice, especially since I enjoy trying a lot of new things. I am not the person to walk into a bar and order a Bud, even if it is something like $1. Normally, a joint like this would earn my complete devotion, but the food just could not hold up to the amazing beer selection.
I could not believe that a place in South Carolina serves such a wide selection of beer, but then again, I have been in Pickens...not Greenville. Seeing the amount of North Carolina and South Carolina beers totally made my night... (fuzzy). There is no point in going over the numerous beers that I tried--they allow you to try 6 at a time in sampler sizes. Great option!
Now the food... I went with a bunch of the snack offerings for the table, and none of them were appetizing. Now, you know the food is not terribly spectacular when you are slightly inebriated and the food still tastes reminiscent of cardboard. Sure, I am a food snob, but I know what bad food is if I cannot enjoy it when I have had a few brewskis down the hatch.
The garlic knots were simply balls of dough. No garlic, and the marinara sauce tasted of canned tomatoes, without seasoning, of course. The black bean hummus lacked any sort of flavor. The chili was a steal at $3 for a very large serving, but it was lukewarm, too tomatoey, and way too bean-heavy. Not a good complement to beer.
If you are craving an awesome beer selection and do not mind a wait, Barley's is a great choice. Just do not expect much out of the food. I waited all week to have a real meal after eating elementary school cafeteria food for 1 week, and I was not pleased with the grub. Beer, beer, beer: that is the key.
If you like beer and pizza, this is the place for you.
The food is great and you can order beer samples to taste every single beer they have ... as long as you have a dedicated driver :)
I had a Meat Eater Pizza and was pretty much stuffed after it. Overall our group had 5 different pizzas and everybody was happy.
This place has a HUGE beer selection...probably one of the biggest ones I've seen.
I ordered the purple haze for a beer and it was nice and light. The appetizer w had was the artichoke ale which came with bread and that was just ok. The artichoke flavor was lost within the bread so that is why I usually like the chips with the artichoke dip. Other than that the artichoke flavor was light so it really did get lost within the bread. For the main course I ordered the jerk tofu sandwich. OMG the jerk tofu was sooooooo good! The tofu was so smooth, soft and rich and tasted fresh. The spicy brown mustard sauce with mayo and ketchup just added the perfect flavor. I wish this place was in Chicago!
I also tried my friends blackbean tofu sandwich which was also good but not as good as the jerk tofu sandwich.
The service was pretty slow but then again this place was packed for being a Tuesday. I would definitely come back!
The food here is great for bar food. I hear the beefalo burger is awesome. As a vegetarian, I usually go for a wrap or a slice of pizza.
The beer selection is awesome! FYI - sometimes the upstairs bar has different selection than the downstairs one, meaning that you have to go upstairs to order. I don't know why it is that way, but that's ok.
Barley's is better than most places in downtown about carding (maybe it's because there aren't really cheap drinks?), so the crowd here is a bit older than the college/frat bunch, which can be nice, too.
This is the spot to go to if you love beer and you truly enjoy trying and finding new beers. Probably the best selection I have encountered in the Greenville area so far.
Not only do they have a phenomenal tap selection they also have a quite extensive aged and specialty bottled collection that reads more like a wine list with each beer having a year bottled and a description of characteristics not to mention most of these bottles have a much higher price tag you would normally find on any beer, but for a beer lover like myself it is well worth it. Great atmosphere and friendly staff.
O yea and the pizza is pretty damn good as well!
I entered this fine establishment accompanied by a party of 14 thirsty no-necks which is normally a sure-fire recipe for disaster but Barley's wasn't phased. Our gender bent waiter (who looked just like Carrot Top) consistently kept our mugs full and our food arrived without an issue.
Barley's has a huge selection of outstanding beer on tap. Their beer list reflects some of the finest micro-brewed selections available across the U.S., Canada and Europe. The food was standard, but good pub fare and pizza. Another nice feature of Barley's is the "flight of six" tasters you can order representing different categories of beer.
If you find yourself in Greenville for an evening and you're a beer lover you couldn't do much better than Barley's.
If you love beer and pizza this is your Mecca. The beer selection is HUGE and the ones on tap (60+) change often. I love IPA and there are always a ton of choices. I suggest the Andouille sausage and jalapeño pie.  The place is also very kid friendly for lunch but is more for adults (read BAR) in the evening.
This is a popular lunch spot for the downtown work crowd. Â There are many lunch specials for a couple of slices and a soda, etc.
Also, this place is beer only with no liquor.
I've actually eaten here a couple of times now. The first time was a disaster...the waiter completely ignored us, even though the place was only 1/3 full (we could see him hiding in the backroom) and we ended up having to ask the hostess for drink and water refills.
Well, we haven't seen that waiter there again, and all our other experiences have been good. Their sandwiches...meh, I've had better...but I really, REALLY like their pizza! It's not my favorite style of pizza (which is New York style thin), but the crust and sauce are flavorful, and they have a good selection of toppings. So far, my favorite pizza in Greenville.
The main thing that would make this bar better was if fewer people knew about it, or maybe if there was an identical one on the other side of downtown. Â I say that because the biggest drawback to coming to Barley's at any given time is how crowded it's going to be. Â If you want dinner, you're either going to have to show up real early or eat at the bar most of the time, because the place is packed.
Other than that, absolutely no complaints. Â I've always liked the food here, especially the pizza and the garlic knots, although nothing they serve is earth-shattering. Â The beer selection is great, although it would be nice to have something to go slumming on, like MHL or PBR. Â The atmosphere is great, in the way that all the old converted warehouses and factories in Greenville are, with the old wood, exposed bricks, high ceilings and towering windows. Â I wouldn't recommend sitting outside after dark, though, because you're going to be swamped with pedestrians and cigarette smoke.
And make sure you spend time upstairs shooting pool or playing darts. Â I had no idea that the upstairs existed for years, and when I found out about it, it was a revelation.
Also I have no idea why you'd bring your kid here, and I don't often see them, but according to some of these reviews you run into them sometimes. Â If you want to avoid that, just go upstairs, since no one under 21 is allowed up there.
If you love standard Domestic Beer, I'm sorry, but consider Barley's a good opportunity to venture out a little. Â You can definitely find something you like, or like better. Â This is a great place for what it is. Â I usually end up finding yet another beer I really enjoy thoroughly, and really, what could be more fun than sampling more beer? Ok, don't answer that. Â I can't write about atmosphere and all that. It's what you'd expect from a 'taproom'.
I CAN say however, if you are a freak like me that can't enjoy the Mozzarella cheese on Pizzas' without seriously paying for it later (and I'm not even lactose intolerant!), you have GOT to try the soy cheese pizza here.  You will fall to your knees in gratitude to the Gods that you can finally enjoy again that perfect marriage of Pizza and Beer....with ZERO consequences! ...and you won't even know the difference unless you are fixating on it and it that case, you'll only appreciate that it's actually good. Kinda unbelievable, because nothing that is a 'substitute' is generally that great. Â
I give them 4 stars for being Good at what they are and not trying to be something else.  It gets another star for even having something as ridiculous as a "soy cheese pizza" and having it taste really good!  I feel like I should be doing yoga and hugging trees for even eating soy, and I can't believe a beer joint converted me (and kudos to my wife for literally forcing me to try it).  For those of you that have 'issues' with some dairy more than others, get in the car, and be very excited.
While the white pizza was decent, and just like my two stars says I have put better stuff in my mouth...what killed this "taproom" for me was the atmosphere...
We arrived close to 5 pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately and were shocked to learn no "domestic crap beers" were available...only the "best" here...(what about those of us that like "crap beer" and what's with the no liquor as well?) We settled on the least micro-brew-y of the selections and tried to enjoy our pizza and beer in a "taproom" only to find ourselves eating at what became an isle for people to peer at us while they were waiting to be seated...and oh..don't forget all the screaming children in tow with fellow diners and waiting patrons. In an attempt to escape romper room we headed upstairs to the "bar"...and I still chuckle saying that... because the wait must have been impossible for the impatient families to bear as they started standing on the stairs to the "bar" upstairs and in some cases carrying their toddlers into the bar area...
Maybe if I enjoyed drinking microbrew with children I would have liked this place better...
The pizza, not so much. Ok crust with a kinda bland sauce and a vague (not browned) cheese. If it were a review of the cheese pizza, my benchmark, only two stars would shine above.
The beer... That's the point. I couldn't try any of the cellared beers; I still had to drive. But the selection of local and microbrews on tap and bottled is excellent. The focus of quality clearly is the beer, and there they succeed.
Overall, one of the best all round bars in Greenville. Â This was usually where we kicked off every night out in college, and it still is every time I come home. Â While it is a taproom and liquor is not on the menu, the pizza is top shelf along with the 50+ beers they have on tap. Â
The coolest part of this bar is definitely the second floor. Â Not only do they serve a different 30 beers on tap from the downstairs, but the floor is decked out with 8 billiard tables, 3 dart boards, shuffleboard, and fusbal. Â
So if you're into playing games, drinking beer, and eating awesome pizza you won't find anything better in Greenville...or anywhere for that matter. Â The pool is usually free on the weekdays too.
