It's a very good restaurant, but my favorite part about it is that its a historic landmark. It used to be a theater in the 1800s, and you can tell by looking at it. Absolutely gorgeous, and the owners have certainly honored its past with their classy decor.

Barnabys does the steakhouse thing right. Delicious savory steaks, but the menu has different options for folks of other taste persuasions as well.

Came here for late lunch/early dinner.  A lot of people on yelp gave them not so great ratings, but my group and I thought the food was pretty good.

    Food:
Walnut crusted salmon with shrimp risotto & Frutti Di Mare- both were delicious. The salmon was a little overcooked, but the risotto definitely makes up for it.  The pasta came with plenty of seafood and it wasn't too heavy as many pastas seem to be.

Fried Soft Shell Crab- My brother ordered this. I took a bite of it, but found nothing special. Typical fried seafood.

Hanger steak with stuffed shrimp- The outside of the steak seemed medium-done when we asked for rare.  The stuffed shrimp wasn't bad, but made with imitation crab meat.

Overall, good food and big portions.  Our waiter was attentive. The host/manager(?) did not seem friendly like he hated his job.

Diner food in a nicer setting. Been boycotting the place since 2006. As I moved into a booth my electronic car key slid across the table, hit the wall, fell to the floor and into a crack in the floor and was swallowed permanently! If I owned the place I'd tell the customer to get a replacement key and the restaurant will pay for it. Not these small-minded grub-slingers. The person in charge told me "sorry," but became annoyed with me when I said I was hoping for more than "sorry." The key cost $250 to replace. They told me to go "F" myself. I could have taken them to small claims court and won, but who has the time for that?  Food was nothing special, management have their priorities all wrong. I'll happily never go back.

The best time to check out a restaurant is under the most demanding conditions. New Years Eve is a perfect time. We went for an early dinner with two other couples. The place was relatively quiet when we arrived but packed half way through our meal. We each had a salad or soup and a variety of main courses. In brief, the food was well prepared, delicious. The portions were quite large. Our server Kristen, and the busboy who worked with her were attentive, quick and pleasant. As there are some foods we don't eat, they were very accommodating to vary our order from the menu. My Waldorf salad was a hefty portion of fresh greens, two cheeses, walnuts, crunchy and sweet apple slices and dried cranberry. The salmon entree was cooked perfectly. I substituted the risotto on the menu for a bowl of linguini, cooked al dente with a lovely red sauce made from scratch. A fresh assortment of veggies stir fried slightly were a great compliment to the salmon. I added some salt to the pasta and would have liked more garlic in the sauce. For dessert,I had egg nog cheese cake which was a bit too cold but tasty. The coffee was excellent tasting but warm rather than hot. Our entire group raved about the soup, salads and entrees. All of us eat at excellent restaurants in NYC and LI and we have a good sense about restaurant quality. At Barnabys, the service was excellent and the food was almost perfect. Bravo! As others have said, the setting and decor is a wonderful added bonus.

The place was cute so i was thinking the food would be good... yea ...no!! i've eaten
out at a lot of places and i can honestly say THIS WAS THE WORST MEAL I HAVE EVER HAD OUT TO DINNER. The swordfish with mojito sauce was nothing short of INCONSUMABLE. when i first tasted it i thought i was going to vomit... it tasted like someone spilled a drink on my food. whats worse it is it TERRIBLY overcooked... no one even asked how i wanted it cooked, which PS. Barnabys is kinda important. Decor=great, service=good, food= GROSS~!

Worst lobster bisque I've ever tasted. Our waitress was nice enough to take it back and instead got us fried Calamari which was rubbery and bland.

Worst porterhouse steak I've ever had. Ordered medium temperature but the steak came without any sign of blood, mostly overcooked, tough to chew and poor in quality.

I will NEVER step here again and don't recommend anyone who knows what good food tastes like.

I'd fire the chef and hire someone who knows how to cook. Plain and simple.

Barnaby's is a nice spot. You can't beat the look and feel of the place, as it's an old theater dating back to 1863.  The food is decent, nothing to write home about, but good.  It's a consistent "stop in for a drink and a small bite" place for me.  My girlfriend and I will often share the calamari and a couple drinks upstairs, which is a must see area if you go here.  If you're looking for a spot to duck into on cool fall or super chilly snowing outside kind of winter day, then Barnaby's is perfect.

We were thinking about having our rehearsal dinner here. No way. The good: The place looks really cool. The staff is super friendly and the drinks were cold. The bad: I did not like the food at all. I'm not a picky dude.
The appetizers were bad. We had the goat cheese salad, which was actually cream cheese and the pork dumplings which were drenched in some sauce. So why put a dipping sauce for dumplings that were already soaked in sauce. So I can have two sauce on my dumplings?
Now for the main course...I had the Filet of sole. Flavorless is the only word. My fiancée had the shrimp scallops and clams over angel hair pasta. If I was an angel I'd be mad. There was a skin on top of it like it had sat before being served. The pasta was soggy. Super over cooked. The seafood was rubbery.
I give it two stars because of the staff and decor. I thought the food was poor at best.

The only reason anyone probably goes here is because New Paltz is full of so many horrible dining options that it makes Barnaby's look like Peter Luger's in comparison. In my opinion, Barnaby's is nothing but a glorified diner. I've ordered steaks that came back rare with blood or they were chewy and inedible.

Long wait, ok service, out of the 7 things we ordered only the shrimp scampi was ok. I would not go here again.

Went here for dinner with a few friends. Ordered food and waited 50 minutes for it. Our waitress did not tell us of the 50 minute wait. I ordered 2 apps for dinner and a friend ordered a veal entree.  When we asked to speak to the manager he merely said thanks for coming offering us no apology. I would avoid this place in the future. Food though decent does not make up for the worst service and management I've ever dealt with. Go to Main Course or Harvest Cafe instead. Avoid.

As I usually travel in large groups, I came here with 11 other people.  So I got to try quite a few things here.  The food here was good, but nothing special.  The skirt steak (which is my favorite cut of steak) was gamey at best.  The grilled vegetables that came with the food was excellent.  I had the filet on a garlic roll with mushrooms.  That was also pretty chewy.  The wait staff was really nice and accommodating.  Just coming for a meal isn't a bad idea, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it.
