Big Al's veggieburger is the kind of veggie burger McDonald's must serve (if indeed they are still serving them in limited locations). Now I don't mean this is a bad thing. It's floppy, with a mushy bun and wilted lettuce, and comes standard with pickles and a mystery sauce. Exactly as I remember fast food burgers from my childhood. It's the kind of burger you can eat with one hand on the road (minus a few slippery lettuce escapees), not the kind you need two hands and the jaws of a crocodile.
If you find yourself in Kanab, Utah (and you should, it's a picturesque and friendly Southwest destination, en route to Bryce National Park), I recommend stopping in and relieving them of one of these babies, as you are probably one of the few customers who will do so. (Note: there is an untested vegetarian cafe just around the corner, making Utah the most vegetarian-friendly state we've been to so far.)
Balance out your meal with fries that also resemble Mickey D's (but better), and perhaps a mediocre malt, if you don't mind it coming with soft serve ice cream. A banana malt was on the menu, but that will have to wait for another trip. Overall, Big Al's is consistently decent, if average, but worth it for the literal local color.

We stopped by for lunch, while driving through Kanab on the way to Arizona. The food was reasonably priced and was pretty good. Â I had the fish sandwich and tots, while the kids had cheeseburgers. Â Nice little place! Â The raspberry shake was the topper and it was terrific. Â I would recommend this place if you are looking for an alternative to "chain" food ( like the mcdonalds next door).
As for the other review-The teenager behind the counter was gracious enough to not detract from the actual meal. Â I would eat here again, if I was looking for Hamburgers and fries.
Well, the girl behind the register avoided eye contact and rushed out as we stood at the "order here" spot, taking an order to someone parked outside - not even a simple "get right to you". After cooling our heels there for a bit she showed up and asked for our order - still with the no eye contact thing. My wife asked for a hot chocolate, the reply "We don't have any hot chocolate ... but I could make some" in a very sullen, almost an "I dare you" sort of way. The burger I had was acceptable, nothing in the least special. Our fries were right on the border of being underdone. The decor was tired fast food/diner. Honestly, if the girl at the counter had looked at us and smiled, I probably would go with 2 stars, but that really put the stake in it. There are actually many good places to eat in Kanab, some even exceptional. This one is very much not.
