Great BBQ. I like brisket sliced not pulled like here but it's the real deal. If they would research a good baked bean (like Famous Dave's) & mac and cheese recipes it would be a 5. The beans are like they were poured out of a can. Mac and cheese so-so. They have the hard part "the smoking" figured out. Their sides are very weak.  The quality of the smoking bumps it up to  a 4.

Meat on a plate, those in the know, know this is enough.

If you haven't made your way over to Big Hoffa's shame on you, just shame on you.

I don't know why I waited so long to try this place.  My husband has been telling me about the great food here for several years, and we finally went last Friday (2/15/13) for his birthday.

I have one word to describe our experience - NOM!

I typically don't like barbeque sauce, and while the sauce here was no exception to that (although my husband liked it) everything I had was phenomenal.  I got the Davey Jones, which is mac & cheese with pulled chicken and ranch dressing, and my husband got 1/2 pound of brisket with mac & cheese and seasoned fries.  The woman at the counter recommended the peach cobbler so we got that too.

Seriously, I am not exaggerating when I say this was one of the best meals I've had in a long time.  The peach cobbler was the best cobbler I've ever had.  We ordered a half pan of it and picked it up a few days later just so we could have more.

I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to try this place.  Don't do the same to yourself.  Go now.  NOW!

Great BBQ especially for the price. Had the pulled pork and it was good, the sauce wasn't bad either. The sides were OK but my wife said the fries were a little spicy. Recommend, especially at the price.

    Big Hoffa's..

Big Hoffa's is the definition of southern comfort food, ironically located in central Indiana.  I've only eaten there twice, but I'm not sure why.  The first time I ate there I ordered the rack of ribs and some mac n cheese.  Ribs were fall off the bone tender, smoked and dried to perfection.  BBQ sauce was delicious, I would guess they definitely make it in house.  Mac n cheese is the perfect comfort food I would expect from a place like Big Hoffa's.

Today I drove by after stopping by the bank and decided to order something carry-out.  I looked over their menu and decided upon "The Captain".  Just reading the description my mouth was watering.  "The Captain" is pulled chicken with mac n cheese and french fries piled on, with ranch and buffalo sauce drizzled over the top.  I will note that the buffalo was a bit bitter, but it typically is.  I'm a huge fan of dishes like this, everything you could ever want just piled on top of each other.  It was very good.

If you havn't tried Big Hoffa's yet, I urge you to.  I know I've said it before, but it's the perfect southern comfort food, not to be mistaken with the rum!

The ribs were some of the best I have had with wonderful 'smoke' mark and dried out to the right consistency (5 star).

The pulled pork was good as was the pulled chicken (3 star) with the sauce being the best part of the taste.  I liked their beans and coleslaw too.

Service was excellent and they had GREAT unsweet iced tea-even with it 10 degrees outside-my type of place.

I would definitely go back for the ribs (notes from a person who lived in both Texas and Georgia for many years)

This was my 2nd time here.. the first being a few years ago after they opened (I believe?)

I'm still not a huge fan of the bbq here, but there isn't a great BBQ place around Indy.  My wife got the pulled pork sandwich along with Mac N Cheese.  Both were just ok.  The pork was smoked decently but was missing something.. Maybe some more rub or saucing while smoking?  The mac and cheese was bland and tasted like cafeteria mac and cheese.

I got the brisket.  It's pulled brisket, where as I like mine sliced.  The flavor was ok, but again just missing something.  It tasted like it had been sitting around in a container most of the day stay warm.  I'd love to see them cutting this fresh, but I don't think they do the volume for it.

The sides are pretty small and not all that great.  The drinks are overpriced.. but they gotta make some money somewhere, so?

Good occasionally, but not a regular place for me.

A BBQ place in a pole barn with antiques. I mean how could it NOT be good?

Went for lunch during the week and I can't wait to go back. The brisket and pulled pork were outstanding. The sauce is tangy and sweet. Garlic rolls. Extra cheesy mac-n-cheese. Brown sugar baked beens. Yes please!

This place is inexpensive and out of this world.

You people can't spell BBQ.  My brisket was cold and floating in hog fat.  Awful. Pulled pork was more like pulled fat.  Never go back.

Really good food. I enjoyed everything I had (which was a Pulled Pork with Cole Slaw sandwich).

I would recommend it to friends, even though its not the type of place I would go to often.

The building also has a neat antique shop in the back, make sure to check that out before you leave.

Want some darn good food served fast?  Come to Big Hoffa's.  The owner and the rest of the staff are always helpful, attentive and VERY nice.  I have been stuck on the same thing for such a long time (Hoffinator)  but I am finally branching out to other items on the menu!  My wife loves the Rib Tips.  Here is a neat little secret.  Order the Ribs and ask for them Hoffa Style (basically no bbq sauce but he does something to them that KICKS them up and adds a whole new dimension to the ribs.  Rarely they will serve chicken wings (The best I have ever tasted in my life)  Also if the owner gets a good deal on cucumbers he will make up jars of pickles that are OUTSTANDING and sell very very fast!  I can't say enough great things about this place... I feel incredibly lucky to live only a few miles away!

Amazingly delish bbq sauce! It's so good that I had to ask for more. It's price right as well. Service was quick and people are friendly. The ribs just fell off the bone. The seasoned fries were amazing and the Mac and cheese was pretty good as well.

Love the smaller portion available on the menu for the ribs I ordered. They have several sizes available for the heartier appetite. The sauce was delicious. The meat fell from the bone,MMMMm. The Homemade Peach Cobbler was a taste of home with the vanilla bean scoop of ice cream that  topped the meal perfectly! The staff was friendly, engaged and helpfully friendly.Perfect for an intimate date night or Dinner with the kids!Their Tea was very good.
The choice of dine in or outside  was great! We sat outside next to their personal garden which  included items sure to have been used in their menu..There were lots of choices on the menu  if ribs aren't your 1st choice but the Huge Bar-B-Que  Smoker out on the  patio made it authentic, great food!
I checked out the menu while we dined and can Easily see ordering Take Out in the Near Future. I'm told they have quite a catering service too.VERY REASONABLE Family Priced Food!

This was our first time to Big Hoffa's.  Based on all the great reviews we wanted to give this a try.  While I'm not going to say this was the best I've ever had, I will say that it was good.  I had the pulled pork and the meat was good and tender, and a bit on the moist side.  The sauce was good but could have used a little more.  The potato salad was okay and so was the Mac n cheese.

The fries were good and have a little kick to them.  My wife liked the cole slaw and her pulled pork sandwich.  Decent sweet tea and the rollers were okay.  Overall I would say good but not great.  What I did like was the smallness of the place.  I think there may be more seats outside than inside.  We would have sat outside but with no shade and no umbrellas set up it was too hot.  The place wasn't packed but it was a good steady flow.

While not the good southern BBQ I'm used to from my days living in the south but for Indiana it's not bad.  I would go again when I need a BBQ fix.

YUM! Super friendly staff, quick service, and the food is amazing! Definitely a favorite.
My new favorite is the Terriyaki Bowl. It's a generous helping of perfectly cooked Jasmine Rice topped with their slow cooked melt-in-your-mouth chicken and the most amazing terriyaki sauce I've ever tasted. I'm hooked.

I lived in Westfield for a couple of years before finally visiting Big Hoffa's - BIG mistake.  The food is awesome (especially the pulled-pork sandwich and the crispy seasoned fries).  On top of that the owner and his staff are genuinely friendly.  Service is fast even when busy and the prices are great.

This review is for the catering. I ordered catering for my parent's 50 Anniversary party and Big Hoffa's did not disappoint. We had beef brisket, pulled chicken, baked beans and potato salad. I cannot tell you how many compliments I received. Many guests asked where I had ordered the food. One man even said "You normally don't get bbq this good in  this area.

Moreover, the catering prices are very good for the amount of food you get. I ordered for 50, easily had more than 50 guests, and still had left overs.

Fantastic local place for some amazing BBQ. They slow-roast all of their own meats in their smoker out front. The owner is friendly and conservable if you ask questions. It is one of the hidden gems here in Westfield that local residents like me are so proud of.

Do yourself a favor....get over there and get some!

No offense, Memphis, but I don't need to drive south anymore for fantastic BBQ!  The big, black grill smoker out front lured me in, and the kitschy Pirate decor was fun and something new.  (Read the menu & you'll learn what Pirates have to do with BBQ.)

Everything we've tried here is always tender and delicious.  Beef brisket and pulled chicken are big winners.  Ribs are great, too.  We bring out-of-town friends here and choose a variety of meat-only orders so everyone gets to try a little of everything.

Restroom is extremely clean.  Some booths, small tables, and we were able to pull two tables together for a group of 6.  Picnic tables outside.

Work off all that BBQ in the attached two-story antique store.  Organized booth spaces and nice, wide center aisles avoid that claustrophobic junk-shop feel.  Lots of variety.  Unique finds included:  equestrian jodphurs, side chairs with French script print, a little Breyer horse barn, and old farming tools.

Was recommended to this place by my dentist, great recommendation.  First, try and get over the fact that the restaurant is located in front of an antique mall and the decor is Pirates, but hey, who doesn't like BBQ and Pirates.  I make this a lunch stop every chance I get.  I get the 1/2 pound beef brisket, two rolls (which I seldom eat), a side of fries and mac n' cheese.  Usually have to ask for extra sauce for my fries.  Love the mac n' cheese, only thing which could make it better is if they put bacon in it.  Not many BBQ places in this area of Indiana, aside from chains, and would make this stop if traveling through or live around the area.

First off let me say there was one downside to this place...IT'S TO FAR FROM WHERE I LIVE.... Both dad and myself stopped in Westfield on the way home due to the reviews and were not disaponited.  OMG, the bbq is wonderful.  The ribs just fell off the bone and the sandwhichs were HUGE...I MEAN HUGE WITH MEAT.  My dad got the special chicken sandwhich and I got the pulled pork and we split a quarter of ribs.  My dad couldn't finish his and took the rest home for a meal the next day.  I barly got through my portion of ribs/sandwhich and two sides.

It's a tiny place but the service was great and the BBQ is top notch...now...can we get a location closer to Speedway Indiana?

Best BBQ on the north side hands down! The buccaneer sandwich with a ton of pulled pork, coleslaw and onion rings is gut bustingly amazing! sides are decent (minus the rolls, witch are buttery and delicious) but who needs sides when you have a massive plate of juicy BBQ in front of you.

The best BBQ in Indiana, bar none.  The atmosphere is fun and intimate, the people are super nice, and the food is top notch.  Try the pork BBQ sandwich, or the Buffalo Chicken Ranch!  The Carribean sweet tea is to die for, too.

Great french fries, and really good homemade mac and cheese top off a terrific meal.  Or, they have great cole slaw as well.  You really can't go wrong here.

I happened to pass by this place on the way back to Chicago after a little trip to Indy.  Thanks for having me, Noah and the other two (which I just realized I didn't get the name of). Boy am I glad I stopped by!

It was about 3:30pm and all I had that day was a granola bar for breakfast. I'm lucky I was hungry, because I wanted to try everything!  In the end, I settled with the Buccaneer with coleslaw and mac&cheese, then also ordered a small plate of ribs.  Also got a cup for drinks and got their sweet tea...perfect.

I sat down and before I could really do anything else, the girl at the counter brought out the rather LARGE sandwich which was a (pleasant) surprise!  It was a lot of food I had ordered.  "Hope you're hungry!" is what she told me when she brought me everything.  All I could say was "I am!"

Sandwich first.  Excellent presentation with the pulled pork and the coleslow on top (and french fries which I didn't know was IN the sandwich!).  The top bun was slightly skewed so I can take in its beauty.  That was topped off with a little pirate flag and the two sides next to it.  Drool.

First bite, juicy, smokey, sweet, creamy, tasty.  All that in one bite and an aftertaste that makes you want more.  The flavor of the pulled pork is definitely one of the best I've ever had!  There is so much going on, but the blend of different tastes complimented each other very well.

I devoured this so quickly...I just couldn't stop taking bites out of it.  If Stride made a gum out of the Buccaneer sandwich, I would chew it all day long...

Anyway, the ribs.  I've had a string of not-that-good ribs recently, so I was a little down.  After eating Big Hoffa's ribs, the dry spell was over!  The ribs were tasty, and yes, fall-off-the-bone tender.  Perfect.  Just a dash of BBQ sauce was all it came with and all it needed.

The sides were good.  Their coleslaw is more on the creamy side, which I like!  Their mac and cheese was extra cheesy.  Which I also like.  It's like they know me or something...

Oh, the last thing.  Gotta get the sweet tea.  Very well made and I think even my "Southern" friends would approve!  I loved it through and through.

Aside from the food, the atmosphere is great.  I'm not so much into the tackiness of the inside, but what is great is the staff.  They are a great bunch of people and you can tell they have a big heart.  You can tell by the food.  You can tell by the laughter that fills the space.  You can tell by the appreciation they show for everyone that dines with them.

Highly recommended. I can't wait to stop by again!

The staff is really friendly at this joint and I am in love with the owner because he is SO NICE and helpful.  Great service all around and super duper yummy BBQ. My favorites are the pulled pork sandwich, the ribs (OF COURSE) and their rolls. I love me those rolls like nobody's business. OH, and If they have lemon cake on hand, you ought to order it because it's something that definitely tastes homemade like your grandma used to make. The prices are very decent and well worth it. I'll be coming back again for sure! I just wished they'd ship their stuff to California. We don't have good BBQ like that here. Big Hoffas! Open up over here puleeez!

Big Hoffa's is a great spot to get BBQ. Every time I travel from California to North Carolina, I make a stop to get my fix. The brisket is excellent and the buccaneer sandwich is on point. The sides are all homemade and the staff is super friendly. I highly recommend this spot for your BBQ fix

Rock solid BBQ!  We had Big Hoffa's cater a lunch at my job and I was really impressed with both the pork and chicken.  Super tender, great smoke flavor, perfectly seasoned.  Both the pork and chicken get a full endorsement, 5 stars out of 5.  I wasn't as impressed by the side dishes, however.  The baked beans were decent but nothing out of the ordinary (3.5 stars).  The macaroni & cheese was quite disappointing, relatively flavorless cheese sauce with VERY overcooked pasta (2 stars).  As for BBQ sauce, we only were given one type (maybe they have more options?) and while it was pretty good, I would have loved a spicier version.

Moral of the visit?  Forget about side dishes here - you will want to concentrate on the meat.  The pork and chicken are both quite worthy of your hard-earned dollars.

I stopped by Big Hoffa's for lunch on Saturday between 1:30-2:00 pm (10/08/11).

This restaurant came recommended by a friend, so I had the expectation that it should be good. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich combo with potato salad and baked beans as sides (The combo comes with 2 sides and a drink).

After ordering I filled my own drink from the Pepsi fountain machine, got some napkins/utensils from the condiment area (that only had 1 bottle of extra bbq sauce) and found a seat (at a dirty table). While waiting a few minutes for my meal to arrive, I realized the counter staff had not asked me if I wanted my sandwhich dry, with sauce, or with sauce on the side.

When the meal arrived, the meat was a good portion on a basic white bun. I took my first bite and was disappointed. The bun was too soft and the meat was on the mushy side. There was the smallest hint of smokey flavor.  Fortunately I did like the bbq sauce that was served on the sandwich. Overall the pulled pork sandwhich was okay, but nothing to come back for.

Unfortunately the sides were a major dissapointment. The potato salad tasted like it was pre-packaged and the baked beans tasted straight out of the can. The portion sizes were also on the small-side, which in hindsight is good since they were mediocre at best.

Overall I was disappointed with my experience as I could see the potential in this establishment. If I am in the area again, I might try something different off the menu. However,  my first time experience was not good enough to make a special trip back. As a small non-chain restaurant, this establishment should do better with the little things. I should never leave a local restaurant feeling like I could make better at home.

    Postiives:
    - Reasonably priced
    - Decent service/wait time for food

    Negatives:
    - Pulled pork sandwich was average
    - Sides were mediocre (potato salad & baked beans)
    - Tables were dirty and trash cans were full (well after the lunch rush)
, even though they appeared to be fully staffed
    - Only 1 bbq sauce option

    Additional thoughts:

Why bother with a pirate theme if it is implemented poorly. For example, most of the pirate flags hanging around the restaurant needed to be ironed/steamed. They all had creases in them and looked as if they came straight out of the package that they were purchased in. To me this is indicative of the same lack of attention to detail that I got in my meal.

My roommate Jim and I were itching for an eating contest.

If we were going to stuff our faces, we might as well make it good.  Called my buddy Andrew & asked for a place with meat.  Not a steakhouse, something different- he suggested Big Hoffa's.

I had never been to Big Hoffa's before (I live on the West Side of town in Eagle Creek).

We drove 25 minutes-  COMPLETELY WORTH IT.

We ate.  And then we ate more.
I'm not talking "mmmmmm that tasted good, let's have some more", it was "OM NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM OMG"  and we ate 3 effing pounds of brisket, a full side of REAL mac & cheese and coleslaw.

Mac & Cheese was nice, cheesy, and buttery.  Tasted homemade, which was FANTASTIC.

Oh, and BTW (I think) they actually make REAL coleslaw.   My roommate was a cook all through college, and he's tasted his fair share of this stuff.

Your average restaurant coleslaw is really watery, and to the average Asian tastes like disgusting 'miracle whip'd kimchee mixed with vinegar and water.  This coleslaw actually had a small bite to it, and wasn't that  watery like most places have them, a great change.  Maybe it was just the pepper...but whatever it was, it was fairly good.

The only down side I will say (which is why I gave 4/5 stars), is that the meats are not overly flavorful.  They ARE tender and juicy though, which is what you want.  And they do give you their specialty BBQish sauce that you can place on the meats, which was REALLY GOOD and completed the taste.

BUTTTTTTTTT, then again, I'm Asian, and I'm used to everything spiced before/during cooking, so I'm probably over-judging.
    Ro reery.

But seriously, why are you sitting there?  Go drive to this place and try it yourself.

A trip to the Auto Parts store in Westfield requires a stop at Big Hoffa's on the way back.  Big Hoffa's has the best pulled barbeque and ribs.  Their sauce is a traditional sauce without all the thickeners, it is thin and tasty and you only need a little bit.

Normally I get the pulled pork and chicken, but since I was eating in, I got the 1 lb rib tips as a meal, with their baked beans and fantastic cayenne potato salad.  This is quite an experience, sorting through a full pound of rib tips.  Only found a couple pieces that had bones in them, most of the plate was wonderful.

They have a great fast takeout that works really well for large groups and will get you fixed up with buns and sides for a very reasonable price.

Let me first say that I am a huge fan of anything BBQ. I have been to Big Hoffa's twice now and have been impressed with their BBQ skills both times. The pulled pork and brisket are great. Juicy and tender with a great smokey taste. The reason for the 3 star rating is because the sides that they serve seem more like something you can get out of a can. I mean, really? If you are going to take the time to smoke your meats, take the time to make some home-made mac and cheese. For the amount of food you get (sandwiches are 1/2 lb of meat), prices seem spot on. I think both times I have been there my meal has been around $8-$10. Great place, great food, great service. I can't wait till it warms up and I can get my BBQ on outside in their picnic area!

This place wasn't bad.  If your a BBQ person, I'd say check it out and make your own opinion its certainly worth a look, however I'll probably opt for other options in the future myself.

-the ribs were tender but they were not overly flavorful, the bbq sauce was soaked on the ribs.  One BBQ sauce.  BBQ sauce is a very subjective part of eating BBQ.  I am not a fan of only having one option for the sauce, which is typically the rich/sweet type of sauce - not my preference.  Without the sauce the ribs didn't seem to have the flavor I'm used too from rubs/wood/smoke.  However, they were tender and cooked correctly.

    Overall impression: Neutral

I lived in Texas for 13 years and got to be big fan of Texas BBQ, smoked meats!! this is as close to it as I have found in Indy. the smoker is a great ad for the place when it has its sweet smoke filling the air. The place is a real hole in the wall if there ever was one, if the place was as big as the taste then it would fill a football field!  Big Hoffa's is the real deal and has the best beef brisket around. On a nice day eat out side at the picnic tables and watch the cars speed buy as you enjoy your food. I would have given 5 stars if the portions where bigger, BBQ should come pilled high on your plate.
Remember to eat well and to live well, and please no chains!

I discovered Big Hoffas this summer and have eaten there four or five times since then.  The beef, chicken and pork are all very good, although I think the beef is the best.  You order at the counter and get your own drinks, etc, but service is fast and always friendly.  The sides are very good too--I'm a fan of the macaroni and the french fries.

Probably didn't help that I was sick, but overall.... well read on.

Wife and I were looking to get out of the house today, so we decided to look up a bbq joint near us.  We recently moved to Noblesville and had driven by a place in Westfield called Hoffas, so we decided on it.

AMBIANCE- Hoffas sits at the end of an oddly painted building.  It's attached to an antique store, and isn't that large of a dining area (probably about 20-30 people or so).  This is the first bbq place I have seen with a "pirate" theme.  Yes, the shiver me timbers kind of pirate.  As we walked in, we saw a smoker out front, along with a stack of wood.  Well at least that looked promising.  Oh yeah, they have a really NICE bathroom.  No joke, check it out.

SERVICE- The crew was all teenagers from the area.  They were chatting it up with the people before us, but when we came to order, it kind of stopped.  Not sure why, but it did.  I asked the guy what he'd recommend.  He said the beef, but then told us to get the pork if this was our first time.  Really buddy?  Oh yeah, he got my order wrong, but I'll get to that later.

MENU- menu is typical of a bbq joint.  ribs, beef, pork, chicken.  They had a sandwich called a buccaneer which had coleslaw and fries on it (sounded like a sandwich from Primanti bros. in Pittsburgh, if people are familiar with that).  Sides included "california cayenne potato salad", mac n cheese, fries, etc...  On their website I saw they had lemon cake, but did not see it on the menu.

FOOD- the wife order a pulled pork sandwich, while I ordered 1/2 lb of the brisket with potato salad, mac n cheese and 2 garlic rolls.  After we ordered, we sat down, and the guy brought us our food.  The guy brought me a brisket sandwich, with no rolls.  I asked him about it, and he told me he saw a sandwich on the ticket.  He said he would bring 2 rolls out anyways.

My wife really enjoyed her pulled pork.  She went on to say it was the best pulled pork she had ever had (we've been all over the country, so that was a pretty big statement).  I wish my experience was as memorable.  The mac n cheese seemed to be made from a mix, the california cayenne potato salad" was nothing more than Kroger potato salad with cayenne pepper on it.  The rolls were cafeteria style rolls spread with butter and garlic salt.  Sweet tea was not a traditional sweet tea, which I did not enjoy.

And the brisket?  First of all it was somewhat "chopped" which I thought was strange, and while it was moist and tender, overall, it was pretty flavorless.  I doused it with sauce to try and save it, but it was pretty much meh.

OVERALL- my wife said she would go back, but not me.  Prices weren't bad.  $5 for a sandwich, $7 for a combo, but if the food ain't right, it don't matter none.

    Celebrity Rating- Britney Spears

I went to lunch here recently, and had to wait a bit to get a table. Didn't mind that at all, taking it as a good sign about the food inside.

That assessment was on the money. The smoked brisket was as as good as I had ever had in Texas, but I would have liked to have had a Texas-sized portion, and this was truly more Indiana sized. But, where quality trumps quantity, you can't go wrong if you enjoy smoked meat. The rest of the guys at my table raved about their lunches- pulled pork sandwiches. Very tender, good smoke flavor. Sauce advertized as 'hot' had adequate bite.

Not the cheapest lunch joint in town, just topping $10. A little more brisket on that plate and I wouldn't think twice.

One other thing I really like- a selection of good root beers made with cane sugar. Not a can of A&W. No HFCS. More than one to pick from. A place after my own cold heart.

I'll definitely go back. This is bound to become my top choice for Westfield lunchtime dining.

It's a crazy place in an antique mart - but you can enter from the street side and not have to walk through the store; unless you wanna. According to Adam they have been there for 3 years and never spent a dime on advertising but you can't tell from the people pouring in.
I had the falling off the bone ribs but he also hooked us up with some pulled pork and turkey. On that note he does about 200 smoked turkeys for thanksgiving; we already ordered ours.

    GOOD EATS!!!
