All of these fucking places are listed as American (New).

    That is a lie.

What is not a lie, is that this place has some pretty great beers.

And sliders - that I got to go.

I had one of their IPAs, which got me sufficiently buzzed.

For a tiny town like Nashville, not bad motherfuckers.

Also, met some screenplay writer from Evansville who lived in Manhattan for 8 years.

    Cool! I'm visiting from Brooklyn.

Also also, got a real real dirty look from one of the guys who works here.

Like, a look that says -

"Get out o' ma cuntry town ya fuckin faggot."

Here's some advice for you -

    I don't dress like a "fuckin faggot."

I dress "fuckin hipsta that betta than u."

    I'm no homo.

    Well, actually,

    homo.

Man, do I ever just love this place!

Best beer in the world, no.  Best food in the world, no.

One of the coolest places anywhere, yes.  There is just something about the charm of Nashville, be it hokey or be it cartoonish. Something simply is wonderful about getting away to the back hills of Indiana and realizing it is only an hour or so south of our beloved Carmel.  Sitting back in a rustic environment enjoying a delicious stout, and packing up your growlers to haul back to Sweetwater Lake.

    Go there today, honestly.

It's hard to find good food in Nashville. Arts and crafts? Those are easy to come by.
    Candles and pottery? Everywhere.

We find that often businesses in Nashville close early (if they are even open at all) -- so it was nice to find a restaurant serving decent food at good prices late into the evening. Plus, Big Woods brews their own beer! (note: no liquor here, just beer)

Most of the food we sampled was average but for sure, we enjoyed BW's pizza. We ordered "Emily's Garden" -- a white pie with spinach, mushroom, tomatoes, black olives, squash, mozzarella and feta cheese. The veggies were super fresh and the thin crust had a great crunch. The feta was a light dusting -- not overly salty or pungent at all.

The server brought me some various beer samples to help me make up my mind -- both of us LOVED all the beer we drank.

There was also live music the night we dined here.

In closing -- a 3 star restaurant for sure, but given the competition, I'd rate Big Woods a 4 for overall dining experience.

The best thing about this place is the beer--very good craft beer.  Having said that, the food was good too--once we asked for some modifications.  For instance, the french onion soup a friend had was very good--but needed more broth.  The pulled pork sandwich was amazing--when you added more barbecue sauce.  Just the little things--but the waitress did a very good job keeping us happy!

It's just a block over from some of the shops downtown Nashville is known for--so leave time for shopping!

    Location: 5 out of 5
Nasvhille has a cute feel to it, and it's really not that far away from the northern entrance of Brown County State Park.  Parking may be tricky depending on your mode of transportation, as Big Woods does not have a dedicated parking lot.  You can find paid lots, or if you are on a motorcycle as I was, you can park on the street in between cars because the marked spaces are HUGE!

    Service: 5 out of 5
What a high point of my visits to this place.  I first showed up at around 12:15 local time, and was greeted warmly by one of the waitstaff.  He was apologetic in letting me know that there would be a slight wait, but did direct me towards an outdoor waiting area that they had set up with portable heaters that day (it was chilly).  Upon being seated in the bar area, the bartender was the perfect mix of local charm and genuine hospitality.  Leveraged against the fact that the Colts were playing on TV, thus leading to a very large crowd in the restaurant and a very heavy workload, I was appreciative of the way that she took care of all the customers that were sitting in here area.  I went back later for dinner, and the young lady that served me at my high top table was equally as friendly, polite, and had a very nice sense of humor.  I noticed that during the time I was dining for lunch and dinner, one of the proprietors was in the restaurant, talking to all of the customers.  What a great time I had when I asked if I could see the brewing operation, and he said, "sure!" and took me on an impromptu tour of the buildings across the street/alley.

Quality of beer:  4 out of 5
Although I will freely admit that I don't like all types of beers, I do find it helpful to try as many as I can when I'm traveling to local breweries.  Big Woods had a palette of 7 types of beer to try, and I'm glad that I had a chance to do so.  At the time of my visit (Columbus Day weekend, 2012), they had 2 different IPAs: an American style and a more mellow variety.  I liked both very much, and I would even venture to say that patrons out there who are usually intimidated by IPAs because of IBUs won't be overwhelmed by either of these varieties.  Their flagship called Busted Knuckle was delicious, and is described as a hybrid ale, similar to a "light" porter.  I don't care they want to call it, but it was smooth, had great malty characteristics, but wasn't too "chewy" or "dense" like one might expect.  If I were to skip any beer on the tasting menu, it would be their Six Foot Blonde; note that this is a personal preference, because there may be those of you out there who enjoy blonde ales very much so.  Their wheat beer was awesome - not too citrusy but still crisp and light.  Lastly, and I don't know if I skipped one because it's been awhile - but the seasonal amber ale (almost/kinda-but-not-really like a Marzen) was my favorite.  Great malt characteristics with noticeable alcohol content, but well rounded in taste and mouthfeel to a point that I didn't really notice any alcohol harshness.  One note - they don't filter any of their beers (see my pics) so just because the beer may look hazy doesn't mean it tastes funny.

Quality of food: 4 out of 5
Two words: pulled pork.  I don't know how to tell North Cackalacky this - but the pulled pork that Big Woods serves is superior to both eastern NC, as well as Piedmont style, pulled pork.  There, I said it, and I stand behind what I said.  I can't describe what the pulled pork here tastes like; I can only proffer that it was tender, juicy, well seasoned, and stood up extremely well on its own with no sauces or even moisture providing agents.  Truth.  The stout chili I had was tasty and well seasoned, I just wish it were slightly thicker and not as watery, and the buffalo wings I'm pretty sure had some grilled sear marks on them that in conjunction with the spicy hot sauce - was fantastic.  Interestingly - they offer fried rice as a side dish (or a main dish too, I think) which has bacon, carrots, eggs, and onion in it.  It probably wouldn't pass my parents' seal of approval of authenticity, but man did it taste good as a side dish on a cold fall day.  Their menu also includes burgers and other sandwiches, pizza, pasta, heavy apps, and some salads.  Vegetarians will have no problems finding something(s) good to eat.

    Price: 3.5 out of 5
Pints ranged from 4 to 6 bucks, sandwiches were about 10 bucks each.  Not expensive, and probably commensurate with what you'd find in the Nashville area as a whole.

    Overall: 4 out of 5
A very strong 4 out of 5 (more like a 4.4), and definitely a high point of my most recent trip to the Brown County area.  The brewery and restaurant are extremely resourceful and clever in how they do things (ask for a tour, you'll see what I mean), and the overall restaurant interior is inviting.

I love their Busted Knuckle beer!  Why it costs more than the others, I don't know.  Supply and demand?  I want it enough that I'll pay more to be supplied it?  Hmm, that's probably true.  I have sampled all of their beers and have particularly liked their red, wheat, and black wheat.  I've been here several times, sometimes for food and beer, sometimes just for beer.  Service has varied dramatically, based on how busy it is and who your server is.  At times, the server has acted completely inconvenienced by having to serve me.  I come back despite the spotty service because 1) the beer is good (see above), 2) the food is delicious with lots of vegetarian options, and 3) What is more satisfying after a long day of mountain biking at Brown County State Park than a pint of beer?

Good beers but not great.  Unless you like to try micro brews, it's not your place.  My wife and I had 3 different beers, which were all very good.  We also tried the Pulled Pork Nachos which were fantastic.  The service was also excellent.  We went there in the late afternoon so we did not experience the evening crowd.

A terrific place! Great beers, friendly staff, excellent food! John and Danny even gave me a tour of the brewery. The pulled pork nachos and burgers are terrific. Tucked away in a lane off of the main drag, this small but wonderful restaurant can't be beat.

The food was fine, as was the service.  It's a nice place, very friendly, maybe too small, though that's not all bad.  It's a handsome place too.  I tasted one beer and had the IPA and was a little disappointed at the lack of flavor and complexity.  Uplands in Bloomington seems to me to be much better.
But I'll go back on the next visit (I'm in Oregon) and try a couple of different beers.  Maybe I just got unlucky.

First off, let me start with what brought 6 college students 40 minutes out of their way to Nashville, IN to Big Woods Brewing Company on a Sunday afternoon. It was an atypical Saturday night that resulted in a widespread case of serial hangovers. The remedy, for this dilemma was to go Big Woods for some Sunday beers and some good food.

Having never been there before I thoroughly enjoyed the quaint patio seating and natural lodge look to the building. My compadres and I decided to sit outside and ordered a round of Busted Knuckle drafts, which were great. As someone who likes to drink IPAs, I found myself favoring the Hare Trigger more than the previous beer but both were above average. The Hare Trigger had a slightly less bitter taste, was more smooth and paired with my main dish well. The melodic tunes of John Cougar Mellencamp serenaded us while we sat, drank and reminisced on the previous night's festivities. It was a brisk 38 degrees so the patio heaters were on. This one heater in particular was making a hissing sound that stoked our already, very prominent headaches so our friend Jeffrey decided to turn it off altogether.

I ordered a Spicy Bacon Ranch Cheeseburger with kickin' cole slaw. It was magical. If I kept rankings for the best cole slaws I've ever had in my life, this would be top 3 - No contest. My fellow diners also enjoyed their chili (huge bowl for the money), the pulled pork nachos (creative, yet delicious) and the Big Woods Burger, which my less articulate friend described as only "good."

Overall, I would rate this place a perfect 5/5 because I received great food, great beer and a complete hangover cure. The only thing that could have affected this perfect rating was hearing JCM's "I need a lover" twice in one sitting. However, this really embraced the heart of Indiana and I let it slide. Additionally, my friends vacillated between adding value to my day and making socially awkward comments. The great, small town vibe this place gave off makes it one of my favorite places to enjoy a lazy Sunday and libations with some pals.

My husband and I visited Big Woods in January '12 and Mom and I stopped today for a quick beer.  We ordered the cheese dip with tortilla chips and, oh man!  it was lick the bowl good. The chef was willing to share the recipe.

I ordered a beer and it was okay but the IPA that was more my style was out.  The brew master happened to be sitting at the bar eating and walked next door to the pizza place, got an IPA and said 'Compliments of the house'.  One of the owners, the brew master, the bartenders - all were cheerful and friendly and my one quick beer turned into two pints and several tastings of other brews.

This small brew pub is a little gem down a one way alley in Tourism City Indiana.

This place was pretty neat!  I liked the decor a lot, it's log cabiny.  Food is very good, you really can't go wrong with any dish.  My friend and I had pulled pork nachos appetizer (great!) and veg. sandwiches (mushroom and black bean).  Also they make their own root beer which was great.  They also let you taste their beers before you decide (if you want them), I recommend this, because all the beers are very unique tasting.  We couldn't figure why they didn't have fries with sandwiches (chips or slaw), but the substitute mixed salad was great.  Place is somewhat small, so you come at a peak hour with more than two people, you may have to have hope you find a seat.

I'm just reviewing the brews, didn't have any food here yet.  I had a red ale and it was quite tasty.  My boyfriend had the IPA and didn't care for it as much as some others.  I tried it and was glad I ordered the beer I did.  I'm looking forward to going back again and trying their stout and have lunch!

The outside seating is very nice and a great place to relax after doing all the walking and shopping around the area!

This place is wonderful. It's got a lot of charm and looks like a log cabin from the inside. The staff is very friendly and moves around quickly to get the food out to you in a timely manner.

All the ingredients are fresh and tasty. The crust is good, the sauce is good. All around I really enjoy everything I've had here. Even the salads were surprisingly fancy, fresh, and delicious. This is unusual for your typical pizza joint. They certainly elevate the food beyond a basic pizza place.

They have a great beer selection including some they make themselves and even draft root beer.

The bathrooms have chirping bird sounds in them, which is a funny surprise.

Long Story Short: Bring adult diapers

So here's my (long) story of this place.

I was there last Fall, and the place was packed... I was with a group of 4 and we were told it would be a 45 min wait... no big deal, this place must be cool and worth the wait... we put our name on the list, go wander around town and come back about 40 min later... we wait another 15 min and get "upgraded" to the waiting area (not on the street) where we can drink beer. It sucked that it was crowded and we didn't have a table yet... but I had my beer, and I was happy.

After I was half way through my busted knuckle, we got a table on the crowded deck and put in an order for food and appetizers.  Half way though my second beer I had to piss (beer does that to me).

I was patiently waiting behind 5 ladies to use the one-person bathroom when I see my waiter walk by with my appetizer.  I'm starving and decide I can hold it a bit longer (praying that the bathroom line will diminish by the time I finish the spinach artichoke dip) and I head back to my table.

I finish the spinach artichoke dip, drink some more of my beer... OK, I *really* gotta go now.

I'm now waiting behind 3 guys and 5 women. The line is LONGER. Great.

10 min later The guy behind me gives up and decides to find a public restroom down the street.  I keep waiting...

I'm now down to 4 people in front of me... and I see my waiter walk by with my dinner.  But I'm half way through the line, this is the point of no return, I *must* go!

The bathroom was neat, but after waiting as long as I did, I didn't really care about the nick nacks on the wall. It was business time, and there were 7 people behind me as misrable as I was not long ago.

By the time I got back to my table (on the deck), my pulled pork sandwich was cold.  Fantastic.

I loved the atmosphere, the staff was great, my friends loved their (warm) food, I enjoyed the beer... but why the hell is there only 1 toilet in this place? How is that even cool with the local building code? I'm sorry but that just ruined my whole experience there. If I ever go back, it will be with the mental preparedness to piss on the side of the building if necessary.

Adorable. Fun. GREAT service. Got acknowledged right away. Was asked to sit tight while they wipe down a table. Lots of people - good activity for a 3 pm on a Friday. Got a great table with a great server. She was fabulous. Talked us through everything from our big flight of brews to our appetizer choice. Very attentive. When we asked for a local place to stop at (popcorn place) she was very honest said she just moved to town and didn't know but she would ask. Followed through and made our stay fabulous. We scarfed up our buffalo beef nachos and drank our brews in time to hit our spa appointment at 5. Life was certainly good at the Big Woods Brewing Co.  My best friend can spot a brewery a thousand miles away - great suggestion on her part and I would totally go back again. It was a blast. No wonder it was packed!

The pale ale tasted of garlic and bleach. Completely unpalatable. We both hoped this was an anomaly and maybe something was wrong with that batch. We ordered the flight of 7 and were just really underwhelmed overall. I think we've been spoiled by Indy's craft brews. The wit and stout weren't bad but didn't stand out as "good" either.

We didn't order any food but noticed a guy cooking meat on a grill...a nice touch. Server was friendly but she didn't bother to tell groups which beer was which in the flights, just sat them down and walked away. I love the look of this place though...very rustic looking. Hopefully one day I'll make it back down and can try some food and give the beers another shot.

DO NOT PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD!

They added 20 bucks extra tip to my tab, and 1000 bucks to my friends tab! Visa removed the tab, but still not a great experience.

For a micro brewery they didn't really perfect there craft. The best beer was the IPA, the others were just drinkable.

Food not great either, had a curry soup that was bad, and burger that left me unsatisfied.

I always love visiting Big Woods.I found them  in the alley purely by mistake last year and was surprised by the atmosphere/food and great beer. A nice contrast to the "milk them  for all you can get "places common to  Nashville. The 6 Foot Blonde IPA was a huge hit with my party and I always love the Busted Knuckle Red ale. Seating is at a premium but there is an outdoor area. The bathroom features a chalkboard that everyone writes on. And the door DOES lock.

And my Yelp app did NOT find it so I could check in.

Fantastic find here - right off of the main strip in Nashville, Indiana... these folks have spent the time to make their food and beers worthwhile.  It's a great place to sit outside and relax after doing your shopping in Nashville.  I recommend the blonde or the IPA, both stellar beers.

Four stars might be a bit of a stretch for Big Woods; I would have given it 3 1/2 if I could.

I thought the food here was excellent.  The Zesty Pulled Pork BBQ Nachos rank as some of the best nachos I have eaten.  The smoked pork, the spicy corn, and the drizzle of  peppercorn ranch and BBQ sauce over the top made for a delicious, creative, and unique take on this most hallowed of appetizers.  We built our own pizza with pepperoni, green peppers, and banana peppers.  The crust was thin and crispy, the cheese was abundant, and the sauce was pretty darn good for a brew-house pizza.

We sat on the porch for several hours to sit out the rain; I found the staff to be extremely attentive and friendly the entire time we were there.  It doesn't appear that there is much seating inside, but the outside porch provides a very relaxing atmosphere.

The reason I hesitate to give Big Woods four stars is that the beer is actually quite bad.  The pale ale had a strange fruity quality to it, and the stout was imperceptible in taste and identity.  The Busted Knuckle Red Ale was the only halfway drinkable beer that I tried, although it was overly malty to the point that it tasted more like a stout than a red ale.  They were somehow out of the other styles of beer when we were there, but given the quality of what I tried, I doubt that I was missing out on much.

I will come back for the food and atmosphere, but it mystifies me how a micro brewery can serve such good food but craft such lousy beer.

I'm not going to poo-poo on someone's all-American dream of owning a brew pub, but this place is nothing special.  I admit, I am a beer snob, hard to please and probably wasn't in the best mood ever after being sat a dirty table, and then getting attitude from the waitress after waiting several minutes to get a menu or our drinks.  I probably should have left, but I am persistent and wanted to try the place---after all it was recommended by a local and I wanted to see what the hubbub was.

We ordered a Busted Knuckle Red Ale and a Big Wood's Stout.  Like I said, I'm a beer snob and I just wasn't impressed.  The Red Ale tasted like that Red Ale kit you get at a home brewery supply--generic at best.  It didn't leave me satisfied and when I delved into the Stout, I wanted my mommy.  Like not in a good way, but because I wanted a hug to let me know that craft brewing hadn't become so homogenized that flavor no longer mattered.

We stayed and suffered through our rude waitress, over priced hamburgers (the meat was dry and flavorless) and as my husband put it, "well,it's better than budweiser" beers.  I'm not sure he was right, but I'm hoping from the rest of the reviews that this was a complete anomaly or that these folks get to a quality brew pub and fast so they know what they need to expect from their local watering hole.

So with nothing else in town open we picked the one place we could find open for dinner past 8. We had some micro brew beer, Busted Knuckle was surprisingly good, that is coming from a Bud only drinker. The blonde was not bad either. Food was good but not anything great. I have a feeling the cook can probably do better if given a chance to change up the menu. I would love to see fresh pretzels and beer cheese, not frozen pretzels and nacho cheese. Pizza was ok, crust could be improved on. Pork nachos I had high hopes for and they definitely have a different taste, less cheese and more sauces(whatever they are). I will say the thing I liked the most about the place was the employees. The bartenders are extremely friendly and make the night much more enjoyable, or maybe it was just the Busted Knuckle, either way it was a place I would return to again.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Nashville.  The atmosphere is great, but what keeps me coming back is the food.  How best to put this...?  I LOVE IT!

While my family loves their burgers and pulled pork nachos, I actually don't eat red meat, but I still find plenty to enjoy here.  Warning:  their kicked-up cole slaw is ADDICTIVE!  I CRAVE it!  However, if you don't like spicy food, you might want to pass on the cole slaw.  It is seasoned with cayenne pepper.  Some days it has a slight tingle, and other days it is on fire, but it is ALWAYS delicious!

Some of my other favorites include:
*Black Bean Burgers:  They are on the appetizer menu because they're mini burgers, but I love to order these as my meal.

*Spinach-Artichoke Dip:  It is full of large chunks of artichoke, and it's delicious!

*Vegetarian Nachos:  While many of my friends and family LOVE the pulled pork nachos, I enjoy their veggie version.  They are totally different from other nachos.  The toppings include corn, black beans, cheese, bbq sauce, and a drizzle of a creamy ranch-like sauce.  It's AMAZING!

*Chicken wings: These are my dad's favorite, and I will admit that when I eat poultry, these are awesome.  They grill them instead of frying them (like most places).  You can choose from buffalo, bbq, or spicy teriyaki sauces.  They are all good, and you can even eat them plain without sauce and they're delicious!

*Portabello sandwich:  I think this sandwich is amazing.  It's a huge portabello mushroom cap grilled then topped with mozzarella, carmelized onions and and avocado spread (similar to guacamole).  My dad is a huge meat-eater, and even he admits to loving this sandwich.  This sandwich can get messy, but it's worth it.

*Pizzas:  Their pizzas are tasty.  My favorite is their spinach-artichoke pizza.  AWESOME!

Lastly, if you get a salad, I highly recommend their bleu cheese dressing.  They make it there!  It's AMAZING!

I'm probably forgetting something, but I hope this gives you enough helpful info.

By the way, their seasoning can sometimes lean toward the spicy side (esp. in their soups).  However, even if you do not like spicy food, there are options for you here.  My dad can't handle anything spicy, but he loves this place, too.  If you are sensitive to spicy food, ASK YOUR SERVER.  They know what is spicy and what isn't.  They can guide you toward the non-spicy items or they can ask the chef to tone down some of the items for you.   Give this place a chance.  It's excellent food!

Great place.  Great atmosphere.  Service was wonderful.  The staff seemed like family.  Didn't have any food, but it smelled delish and the people who were around commented on how good it was.  Out of the 6 or 7 beers they had on tap we really liked 2 of them.  Will report later and tell you what those are.  BTW, they only serve beer and go figure only the breweries.  :-)

Big Woods is our favorite place to eat in Nashville.  In fact, it's probably one of our Top 5 places to eat--period!  We normally eat here 3-4 times a month.  So I feel like I really have a lot of dining experience here and am well-qualified to leave a review.  First of all, yes the bathroom door locks.  And the bathroom is always clean!

The beer is great!  They did have a little trouble getting everything adjusted when they first opened, but we always have a great beer when we come.  I have tried them all, and frankly, it is very difficult for me to pick which one is my favorite!  Also, they come out with a new beer every so often, which adds to my dilemma!  But folks, it's a microbrewery.  So just enjoy the individuality and personality of the beer!  Nashville is very tight with their liquor licenses, so you can only get the beer they brew.  But that's the fun part--it get's you out of your Budweiser-rut!

The food is great!  I have no clue what the other review was talking about--again we eat here often.  The cheeseburgers on the grill are so good, that my husband never orders anything else.  I like to try everything on the menu, and I think I have.  I love it all!  My favorite is the pulled pork nachos--which are a first-timer's must have!!!  The black bean burgers are a very tasty vegetarian option.  I have never had a bad or boring pizza there.

The staff and owners are great!  We always have great service and the atmosphere is very friendly.  We have brought a lot of friends here and sent a lot of friends here and they have all had positive experiences as well.

I could go on and on, but I'm getting very hungry and hoping that my husband gets home soon so we can go there for dinner tonight!

After a long day of hiking, we stopped into town for a quick bite and a beer.  Got an individual pizza (which you could definately get the correct amount of pizza as they have individual, small, medium and large) which was very good.  We ordered without the olives and it had olives, but no biggie.  (The check did say no olives so the kitchen just missed it.)

We started with the beer sampler which was 4 oz. of each of the 5 beers.  The blonde and wheat were very good.  The pale ale was ok but I general don't like pale ales, so that was my personal taste, not their beer.  The red was just ok... a little dark for a red but good taste.  I don't like stouts but my friend does and thought very highly of it.  My opinion is that people that don't like their beer are the bud light/miller light drinkers of the world, not micro brew fans.

The locals were so friendly, striking up conversations, sharing favorite hiking and fishing spots, and just sharing history and facts about the area.

Later in the evening we tried to eat elsewhere but couldn't find vegetarian options for me, so we ended back up at Big Woods.... even the same waitress!  Big Woods has many, many veggie options which seems to be very rare in Nashville.  For dinner we shared the small veggie nachos which were better than average and completely unique.  I had the portabello sandwhich which was both huge and excellent with a side of the spicy slaw that was good but only medium spicy. My friend ordered their burger and he said it was one of the best five burgers he's had in his life. A beer each with dinner made a great meal.

Both visits we sat on the deck which was relaxing and roomy.  We ordered a growler of the blonde to take back for a relaxing evening on the deck of a cabin.  Highly recommended.

There are really only a few places to choose from for a "nice" dinner here in Nashville IN, this is considered one of them according to many locals. And I asked a lot of locals.

But I guess I'm spoiled cuz I didn't like it here.

First, you can only drink the beer they brew.  Most brews they have are darker so if you like a lager or ale, the only one available is blonde. Which I got but it was terrible. It was flat tasting and quite metallic.  But if you happen to like their beers, you can buy growlers.

The menu was quite standard with salads, pizza and sandwiches.   All sandwiches are on a kaiser roll, including their BLT.  I got the portabella mushroom sandwich that was supposed to be a hot sandwich with cheese, carmelized onions, roasted red peppers.  What came?  The mushroom was hot but everything on top of it was cold.  As in, from the refrigerator. Cheese was still grated.  What does the waitress say? (BTW this was her recommendation...)  "Yeah, our equipment heats it from the bottom and sometimes I guess it doesn't really warm it..."  Wouldn't you have caught that on the way out, I mean, it's your "favorite sandwich".  Dingbat.  Who we waited 15 minutes in the first place for.  But she was kind enough to remove the beer I didn't drink off the tab.

The other entree was a personal cheese pizza which did have melted cheese. However it was not very tasty, crust was bland.

This place was crowded though. And to sit on the front porch was quite nice, they don't overcrowd the outside tables at all.  And around the bar inside were locals having a good time. The owner was walking around so it's quite a friendly place.

The door in the bathroom does have a lock: it's that little button on the side of the knob....

    Wouldn't go back.

Thank god we found this place , The hand crafted beers are outstanding , wife and I have visited at least 100 micro brewers in the last 10 years. their wheat beer has moved to the very top of my list.we had a vegtable nachos, sounds weird but the naco's have sothwestern favors with corn, blackbean, chives
,onions, tomatoes and a house barbeque sauce great flavors would have never thought about southwestern items on nachos' wow.if your in Nashville Indiana ( brown county ) you have to drop in for a well crafted beer and nacho's or pizza I hear their famous for them.

When this place came into view down a narrow alley off the main drag, I felt like one of those heat-delirious, joy-maddened cartoon characters who, after crawling through a punishing desert, finds an oasis of lush foliage and beguiling harem girls.  The dining scene in Nashville is beyond dreadful, and I had nearly given up hope of anything approaching a decent meal when we spotted Big Woods--a modern (if, er, woodsy) brewpub tucked away near the far (eastern) end of the downtown strip.

They have a tiny dining room, so we waited a few minutes for a table, eschewing the outdoor seating.  It would be nice out there in cooler weather, but we'd been baked in the late-June sun all day and appreciated the air conditioning.  The inside was very handsome, though.  I loved the entire aesthetic, and the chairs in particular; on a table tent were listed all the artisans who had contributed to the construction and decoration of the place.  Nice touch, I thought.

First things first:  I'm sorry to say that their beer is terrible.  The blonde shouldn't even have been served, as the waitress told us up front that it "wasn't ready yet."  It was thin and metallic, yuck.  The pale ale was better but still a weak effort.  The Busted Knuckle Red came out looking like a stout, which the waiter warned, but I was still shocked.  If this is a red ale, their stout must look like motor oil.  I didn't bother to find out.

I'm happy to report, however, that the food was delicious, to my mild surprise.  My ladyfriend and I shared the tasty spinach and artichoke dip, which contained huge chunks of artichokes and was not overly creamy.  I had the pulled-pork sandwich and spicy cole slaw, and both were top-notch.

And finally, I can't resist describing my experience with the bathroom.

    1.  There is no lock on the door.  Trust me, I looked EVERYWHERE.  It's a single, unisex restroom for the entire bar, and there is no lock on the door.  How long has this place been open?  Are they still waiting for the door guy to come and install the lock?  There was a dude perched on a stool at the bar directly in front of the restroom door, so perhaps he's a regular stationed to gatekeep the facilities?  It doesn't help that the toilet is directly beside the door, so if someone barges in, you have zero potential to turn yourself or to stuff your piece back into your pants.

    2.  There are several "bathroom books" on the back of the toilet.  Some of them even admit it on their covers (The Big Bathroom Book of Jokes, et al).  And these books have been used.  VERY well-used...or ill-used, perhaps.  I mean, rumpled and dog-eared.  Ew.

    3.  There is a framed, signed photograph of...Sir Sean Connery.  Highlander-era Sean Connery.  I couldn't make out the dedication, but that adds to the mystique, I feel.  Is it possible that Sean Connery has actually visited BFE Indiana and eaten at Big Woods Brewing Company?  Perhaps one of the owners met him long ago?  Family heirloom?  Bought on Ebay?  Of all the things to find in a restaurant john in the middle of nowhere, that has to be possibly THE most unexpected.  Of course it adds immensely to the charm.

Glad I stumbled on this slightly out of the way brewpub. A nice wood beamed ski lodge-esque building is hidden on a little street slightly larger than an alley west of Van Buren and north of Main.
Excellent craft brewed beers. Limited menu, but choices that will appeal to carnivores and vegetarians are available.
I tried the French onion soup to start. It's a bit non traditional. Served in a large bowl, loads of onions in a broth seasoned by nice fresh herbs. It's topped with grated cheese that's melting as it's delivered to the table and instead of soggy bread in the broth it's topped by tasty, crunchy croutons. A nice variant of a classic. I also tried the pulled pork sandwich. Mounds of nicely smoked pork with just a smidge tangy of horseradish sauce smeared on. They provide a side of sweet BBQ sauce. Wise choice not to slather on the sauce back in the kitchen. It would overwhelm the sandwich. Better to be able to add it to suit your taste. I also had a mixed green salad. Nice fresh greens and I enjoyed their house made bleu cheese dressing. Definitely much better than the basic 'gallon jug' salad dressing most restaurants serve.
    On to the namesake products...
I enjoyed their nice creamy, smooth stout. There's a nod of similarity to a famous stout from Ireland, but with a nice stand alone identity of its' own. I also enjoyed a pint of the red, which was rich and robust. The red made a nice compliment to the smokiness of my pork sandwich.
I overheard diners at nearby tables commenting favorably about the pizzas, too. I may have to try one next time I'm passing through the quaint, kitschy berg of Nashville, IN
