Blackstone ran out of tuna, lamb, snapper, slaw, fries, and broccoli. Are you kidding? My wife ordered the surf and turf, and I ordered the strip steak. We added sides of mashed potatoes and spinnach. Everything was ho hum. The steaks, as said in other reviews are tremendously inferior to what can be had at half the price at many other restaurants - Copeland's has them beat hands down any day. The potatoes were less flavorful that what comes out of a bag, and I've made tastier spinach. The waiter was distracted, a bit rude, and unconcerned with our level of happiness (maybe it's because he was sick of all the groupon customers), and was generally unapologetic for the shortened menu. All in all, I can't understand why anyone would be willing to spend $100 for such mediocre food and poor service.
Review Source:Anyone giving this place more than 3 stars is either a shill or has no functioning taste buds. Â I've had better steak at Outback for less than half the price. Â There are literally dozens of better steak options in ATL, especially at this price point. Â I'll give it 2 because the waitstaff was attentive (and apologetic), but I can't see any reason to ever go back here.
Review Source:We went on a Friday night, had steak and a shrimp salad to eat, with wine and white russian to drink. Inside has an 'older' atmosphere, with the cherry stained wood, all around. They had a live band, singing songs from Frank Sinatra. It was cute. The staff were friendly and personable, from the waitress, to the bartender, to the manager. We felt welcome and would go back. I just wish it wasn't so far away from where we live, because it's a bit of a drive from Gwinnett county to Cobb.
Review Source:I'm sorry, but a restaurant with "steakhouse" in their name should know how to prepare meat. Â Totally dissatisfied. Â Service was very good, and atmosphere fine. Â We ordered and my wife got the NY strip and I ordered the ribeye. Â We both got strips. Â No big deal really and they brought my ribeye out in five minutes. Â I tried my wife's strip and must say it was very tough. Â Definitely not $30+ a la cart worthy. Â Then my ribeye... Â I was actually floored when it arrived. It was only 1/2" thick. Â WTF. Â $36 and only 1/2" thick. Â I did a quick check, but no the waiter definitely did not have a Waffle House name tag on. Â Taste? Â It was average at best, but what can you really do with a thin piece of steak?? Â Bar none, the worst steakhouse I've ever been to. Â The waiter offered us a free desert, but you can't make up for the poor meal. Â His excuse for the thin portion? Â I should have ordered the whatever ounce Cowboy steak if I wanted a thick cut. Â Whatever. A pound plus ribeye should be 1-1 1/4" Â I'd be embarrassed if this was my restaurant.
Review Source:I've been to Blackstone twice and both times the food was divine. I, originally, found this place through a halfoffdepot deal and it was definitely worth the purchase. Mouthwatering and very flavorful food. Definitely a more upscale kind of place... i would recommend this being ideal if you're looking for a more intimate setting, but it's worth a try, you will not be disappointed.
Review Source:Blackstone looks like your traditional, good, old-fashioned, American steakhouse. This place looks high end. It has a dark, romantic, vintage atmosphere. On the weekends, they have live music where they sing classic tunes. If I wore a suit here, I would feel like I would be on Mad Men.
I tried some of their leftovers and they tasted amazing. So I decided to dine in. I think one of their problems is consistency. The food wasn't as good as the leftovers I had. Don't get me wrong, it still tasted decent, but not as good as I remembered.
For appetizer, we ordered the tuna tar tar. It is actually made at the table by the waiter. They ask you for the spiciness level. We said spicy. And it wasn't very spicy. It had a distinct Asian flavor to it because of the soy sauce and wasabi. The tuna didn't seem too fresh though. I liked the pita bread it came with.
For the main entree, I got the rack of lamb. Let me tell you, this is a real-deal American restaurant. Sure the prices look high, but they give you a lot of food. I never seen so many lamb medallions in my life. It came with a huge mound of creamy mashed potatoes and gigantic asparagus spears. It was also cooked to temp at Medium Rare.
The lamb came with a sauce. However, the sauce didn't provide much flavor. In fact, the lamb didn't have much flavor at all. They could've used a bit more salt. I did like the mashed potatoes. It was good and creamy and tasty. The asparagus tasted okay.
We also ordered a side of mushrooms. Man they were drenched in wine. All I could taste was wine. It didn't taste very good because of the strong wine taste.
I also tried some of the griilled trout. That tasted pretty good. It also came on a mountain of mashed potatoes and asparagus. Maybe that's the standard garnishes for Blackstone's dishes. The trout was grilled perfectly and tasted good.
They cook their meals well, but they need to take care of the flavors. Maybe I eat too much high-sodium foods or something. Or maybe I'm too used to bold flavors. I think this place is a decent restaurant though. If you like classic, American fine dining, try this place. I give it about 3.5 stars.
As someone else said, the GPS will lead you astray when it comes to this restaurant. Not sure why. Anyhow, if you're looking at the building from Atlanta Road and see the plain words "Blackstone" at the top of the building, you're probably not in the right spot. Swing around to the left of the building, and you'll see valet running around, and the name "Blackstone" is written a little fancier on this side.
I came here with a friend who was visiting from SC. I had no idea this restaurant had valet, so I did not have a "tip" for the kid running to and fro. At first he had his hand out waiting to grab my keys, but once I lightheartedly mentioned that I didn't know about the valet service, he quickly put his hand down and said "Ok, well, you can self-park over there" AKA " I'm not doing this shit for free. There's some spaces down the street." Eh, lol.
I liked the ambiance of the restaurant. They had live jazz, and it's not extremely bright inside like a lot of restaurants with those harsh lights. It's actually a tad bit darker than what you might expect, but not complaint-worthy. Lots of dark wood all around. I saw a bar area inside, as well.
Our server was awesome and extremely attentive. I ordered the free range chicken meal: baked chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, mushroom & chive sauce. Mmmm. I'm drooling just thinking about it. The first bite of chicken & potatoes was just out of control; it was so good. The green beans were great, and the mushroom & chive sauce complimented the meal perfectly, not salty- but full of flavor.
We were too full for dessert, but I'm sure it would have been great. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was the bread we received before our entrees came out. It was too tough, and it wasn't as good as bread & butter I've gotten at other places. Otherwise, almost perfect.
I cannot give 5 Stars because its been over a year since I've had dinner here. I love Blackstone's! I have for years! Â Stopped in tonight for a glass of wine before heading home. The live music was fantastic and the bartender so helpful & professional! I just wish they had a more updated wine list. Some nice French unoaked Chardonnays would be so appealing.
Review Source:Disappointing! While in Atlanta recently my wife and I decided to have a late night dinner at Blackstone. Wanting a steak,we decided to try this restaurant because it was highly reccommended by our hotel. The restaurant was practically empty at 9:30 on a Friday night but we decided to stay. There was live music on the bar side. Our server,Paul M., was the best part of our experience. Paul was very attentive, professional and personable. The ambiance was extremely dark and the decor was in need of an update. The house music clashed with the loud, live music emanating from the bar making the ambiance even less desirable. I would have preferred one or the other. My only complaint with the service was that we were not informed of items that were not available until after we tried to order them. We ordered raw oysters, a baked potato and a bottle of wine off the reserve list only to then be informed that they were out of them all! No baked potatoes in a steak restaurant? We started with the pear and walnut salads that were good although the walnuts did have a slightly stale flavor. We both ordered filets that were cooked to order and melted in our mouths. For sides we had the steamed spinach and the mushroom risotto. Both were very flavorful and cooked perfectly. Paul did suggest a bottle of wine that complimented our meal nicely. The overall experience, while the food and service were good, still left me feeling disappointed with the menu items that were missing and the ambiance. Not to mention the $180 we spent.
Review Source:Pristine service, an intimately romantic atmosphere, and cleanliness with a hint of peppermint are what awaits one at this restaurant. Â Though the prices on the menu are not the lowest around, one can surely expect great service from this place. Â I know my husband and I did.
Â
Upon having made reservations to this place, we were warmly welcomed and even received a personal greeting from our waiter called by name at the time of seating. I instantly noticed the seclusive lighting that was just perfect for a peaceful, delectable meal with that special someone with colorful paintings on the wall very finely lit in the background. Our waiter (Paul) was very hospitable and tentative, but not over-eager to serve (I would recommend asking for this gentleman when making your reservation). He was also courteous enough to ask if my husband had a food allergy when he asked for not tomatoes on the salad, which we felt was very thoughtful!
The food in itself was delicious. The menu was a not very wide, but the food speaks better for itself in taste than what it can do in its description on the pages. I appreciated the extra cleaning we got in between courses as well and feel that it was an extra step above and beyond when it comes to serving and dining. I was left never doubting the care for the table and my comfort as well as my enjoyment of the food.
Very nice.
Another fantastic touch is the fine desserts, that are in-house made and as delicious as you might hope to imagine; my husband and I shared a delightful chocolate cake with raspberry topping with a fudge that was very pleasant!
The valets are very nice there and have a great since of humor. We left feeling very well taken care of and shall remember it for future special events. Would I recommend it to friends and family? I would say ''Yes'' if I'd not done so already.
In short, if you're needing a very nice place to treat out that special someone or just want to try something a little different where you can feel appreciated and finely catered to, this is the place for you. They also have some very nice specials during the week that are worth looking into!
Great evening out. Â Atmosphere was very nice. Â It almost looked closed from the outside. Â We went because of a Loclly coupon. Â We will go back because of the food and service. Â Paul was a fantastic server. Â Very attentive and thoughtful. Â I had the filet. Â Perfectly cooked. Â My wife had the airline chicken. Â She said it was the best chicken she ever had. Take your smartphone and "check in" on Facebook and receive a free desert. The chocolate cake was superb.
Review Source:Been curious about this place for years. Â Finally an opportunity to try & yelp about it. Â My thoughts are was very well ran, served and delicious. Â I will break down each item that I had one by one. Â Decor is dim lit. Â Very cozy and comfortable inside. Â Real intimate setting. Â Very nice bar area. Â Live band on Thursdays & Fridays. Â Now to the meat & potatoes of this review: Â First off, the service/waitress was phenomenal. Â Made sure everything was in place, upbeat attitude, provided recommendations. Â Grade A on her part. Â Had the Asian Fried Calamari. Â The calamari part of it was ok. Â Not the best that I had, not the worse. Â What made it stand out was the sauce & seasoning placed on it. Â Magnificent! Â Blackstone was not stingy on its appetizer portions so boost for them. Â Chased that down with their good bread & caesar salad. Â Really not too much to write about on caesar salad - it was good. Â Had the tenderoin & shrimp with mashed potatoes. Â I'm very judgmental on steaks because if you pay good price for good steak, it better be on point. Â My analysis on the steak - it was ok. Â Not great, not bad. Â I may reconsider an update on this review trying a different type of steak. Â The mashed potatoes were alright. Â Needed pepper to give it some ummppphhhhh. Â Plus they were a little stingy with shrimp. Â All in all this venue is somewhere between three & four stars. Â Yelp needs to implement half stars on these ratings but anyway, they treated me well, the food went down well so keeping this at four stars for now until further notice.
Grade: B
Went on Saturday evening. We've been before on a Friday evening and really enjoyed it. But last night was off. No live music (thurs and fri only), the sound system was not working so the atmosphere was like a library, and there were other small shortcomings. All and all, not the experience I expect from a nice dining restaurant. The food was good though. Not crazy about paying for side items along with the steak, unless the steak is defined as "prime"... Overall I thought the meal was too expensive for the experience. But it could have been an off night for Blackstone.
Review Source:We really enjoyed this restaurant. Â We made a last minute weeknight reservation for 6 people and it was no problem at all to find the space. Â We ordered the tuna tartar appetizer, and to my surprise they prepared it table-side, customized to our preferences, which I had never seen before and loved. Â The spinach and artichoke dip was also delicious. Â For entrees, we tried a bit of everything and everything was wonderful. I personally had the scallops and mushroom & pea risotto - I found it to be flavorful and perfectly prepared. Â Service was excellent all night.
I'm subtracting a star for price and atmosphere. Â The food is really, really expensive. Â Kind of too expensive for Smyrna, in my honest opinion. Â For those kind of prices, I would be expecting a trendier or at least more crowded restaurant, and we were practically the only people in there. Â I also thought the upcharges on the wine were a little extreme ($110 upcharge on a bottle of Cakebread, for example).
Those minor things aside, I would recommend Blackstone and would definitely come again next time we're in the area.
I took my friend here for her birthday dinner (and because I got a deal on Half Off Depot). I made reservations for 8pm and we arrived a little early about 7:45. We still had to wait to be seated which was about 8:20. I was hoping that the time delay would not be a precursor to what to expect from the food and service. Well, I can honestly say this is one of the best restaurants I have eaten at in some time. We ordered the spinach n artichoke dip for an appetizer and it was delicious. They made it just right with the right amount of vegetables and creaminess. They served it with toasted pita bread which I thought was a good take on the classic chips.
I ordered the diver scallops with whipped potatoes and asparugus. My first bite in and I knew I was going to throughly enjoy my meal. I told my friend that they could have given me more scallops (only got 4 on the plate) because even though they were a good size they were not big enough for a meal. Plus the entree was $29. My friend told our server, Keyiona (might not have spelled it right), and she being the great server that she is brought me out 3 more scallops. Now that is the way to please a customer and get them to be a return customer. The scallops were so tender and melt in your mouth good that I savored every bite. They had a lemon sauce on them that just really set the tone off. My friend had the surf n turf with filet mignon and a lobster tail with whipped potatoes and mac n cheese. She said everything on her plate was delicious. I tried a bite of her filet mignon and I will say it was good and tender.
The whole meal satisfied us both with the delicious food and great service. I will definitely be back but only for a special occassion because it is on the pricey side. I would like to try one of the steaks on my next visit. Oh my friend said they had a pretty good bar menu too.
I started going here from purchasing a groupon. Â I was worried that it might be just ok. Â Upon arrival I immediately appreciated the low lighting as I was out on so date. I ordered the salmon with mashed potatoes and veggies. Â The menu was a little different for me since I usually stick to eating foods that I grew up on. Â Omg this was soooooo good and fresh I was hooked immediately. Â To top that the waitress Jane K was so patient and suggestive of the menu. Â I was really blown away at the level of service from her and the delish food because of course its rare to get excellent food and service at the same time. Â I have since goner back at least four more times and was only disappointed once with service because Jane was not there but now I call ahead prior to confirm what day she will be working and dine only on her shift. Â This is not in the greatest location to be noticed on the main road but I hope they stick around because it is kind of pricey.
Review Source:GREAT BAR MENU - cannot brag enough about the fair prices and great offerings on the BAR MENU. Crab Cakes, filet sliders, etc. Valet at night (small parking area with pizza joint across the street). The bartenders have been there for years; know how to pour a good drink, they'll card you even if you look 60 yrs old. Features live music occasionally (seems like every night I go in) which really pulls a crowd. Decor is dark and upscale but dont fear to dress to causal. Tucked in the corner of Vinings & Smyrna off Atlanta RD near 285.
Review Source:The reason Blackstone is getting 4 stars from me is because there are definitely things I love here and then there are some things that I'm not a fan of.
LOVE:
* The STEAKS! Oh yum yum yum, always cooked perfectly. Â My favorite: filet mignon. Â Last time my fiance and I split a plate and we asked if we could have it somewhere between medium and medium rare. Â Nailed it!! Hats off from me!
* Cauliflower gratin... so delicious
* Risotto... perfectly al dente, not mushy, heavy on the onions (if you don't like onions, this may fall into the "don't love" category)
* Kenny, the bartender. Â We often sit at the bar to eat dinner. Kenny is awesome and makes sure you have everything you need. Â Drinks are strong and he'll make something up for you, too, if you're not certain what you want.
* Valet parking. Â What's not to love about having someone help you out of the car. Â And the parking area is small, so you may have to walk a bit to get from your car to the restaurant.
DON'T LOVE:
* the atmosphere: It's very dark on the inside. Â The restaurant is beautiful, but just too dark and stuffy. Â Another reason why I prefer the bar area... a bit more lively there.
* The prices. Â It's expensive, no doubt. Â That's why I've been stocking up on Groupons, Half-off-depot, and whatsnots. Â With $45 off, this place is actually pretty reasonable. Â But let's face it, I would probably not come here as often as I do, if it weren't for the coupons I've collected.
As an FYI - they've changed head chefs not too long ago, which made me worried, but they've kept the same grill master. Â So, the steaks still taste as good as ever and I really was not able to taste any decline in quality of food due to a new head chef.
I dined at Blackstone's and was extremely disappointed. We waited 10 minutes before our server approached us- he had 7 tables. We ordered the wedge salads that were brought timely and were decent in flavor and freshness. Bread was not brought until we requested it and received just prior to the entrees arriving. My friend had the triple thick bone in pork chop which was over cooked and extremely dry. I had the scallops which were sandy and had to be returned because they were inedible. As a replacement I ordered the Chilean Sea Bass which was decent, but lacked flavor- the coconut lemon beurre blanc sauce was bland and did little to help the fish. Â Perhaps, it was a bad night for the restaurant, but I think I'd rather spend $172 on dinner elsewhere.
Review Source:My co-worker told me about this place so last night we made our way over to the Vinings area, arriving late for our 830 reservation because the GPS was a little off on where Blackstone is located. Â FYI - it's in the back of the little shopping plaza and thankfully it's NOT the place you see from the front with the Xmas-like lights hanging about.
I had the herb crusted rack of lamb with whipped potatoes and asparagus, with a wedge to start. Â The Feller had the gulf shrimp, bacon mac and cheese and nothing green (booo!). Â My wedge was good - nice and crisp with plenty of bacon and not too much dressing. Â Continuing on with my love of bacon, I wasted no time digging my fork into The Feller's mac n cheese, but not before he told me to make sure to get some of the bacony cheese on top...ummm DUH - have ya met me? Â It was pretty darn good, but the best part was that top crust. Â The mac n cheese itself was a little runnier than I like mine, but ok.
The asparagus was grilled and pretty good, but nothing stood out about it - same for the potatoes. Â They were good, but I didn't feel a WOW when I put them in my mouth. Â I like to be WOWed. Â The Feller was certainly WOWed by his shrimp...and I don't think I could come up with a single time we've been out to dinner and he hasn't ordered shrimp, so I take that as a good sign. Â They looked really good and I should have snatched one up when he wasn't looking.
Ok, the lamb - I had been looking forward to this all day, so I may have built it up in my head a little too much, but it just wasn't spectacular. Â One piece was seared properly, but the rest was a little...eh. Â It also came medium when I ordered medium rare. Â I felt like I was missing something the entire time I was eating and it was a big disappointment. Â
Our server was awesome - never once were our glasses empty and she seemed to anticipate our every need. Â
I'd go back if in the area. Â Overall it was pretty good and I'd really like to try the rack of lamb again to see if maybe I hit an off night or something. Â
My suggestion to Blackstone to improve 'pretty good' to 'great': Â Better bread on the table - this is an absolute must in my book.
I am so happy my girl Khadija suggested we go to this place while I was in town visiting. I felt bad because we had a reservation for 7pm but didn't get there until 7:30 due to traffic. WOW!
When we arrived the manager and hostess were both standing there and we apologized for being late, no worries they both said, we have a table waiting for you. Whew! We got situated and I ordered the seafood special which was a 4oz fillet topped with crab cake stuffed in a crab shell. My friend ordered a Caesar salad with salmon. Well unfortunately when my steak arrived, it was cold. I am always weary regarding sending my food back but our fabulous server Liza insisted that she get a new steak for me. Bless her heart because this one came out piping hot and cooked to perfection. YUMMO!
We couldn't leave without dessert and my friend had ordered a Key Lime pie as her appetizer so I just had to order it for my dessert because it was that good. The manager comped my dessert for me because of what had happened with my steak, major kudos!!
So why only 4 stars if the hostess, manager, server and food were great? Parking SUCKS! lol. So technically this place gets 4.5 stars out of 5 and yes I would go back anytime.
I went to this restaurant a few weeks ago with a friend and judging from the valet parking, I thought I was going to be extremely under-dressed, as I was wearing jeans, a tank top with a cardigan of sorts.
Anyway, upon entering I was struck as to how dark the restaurant itself was, but it kind of worked for a nice steakhouse.
We started off ordering calamari with this sweet chili sauce which was delicious, but a little too spicy for me after a few bites, the calamari was well cooked and not chewy and crispy on the outside....yummy!
I ordered the fillet which came in with veggies and delicious sautéed mushrooms which I believe were portobello, could be wrong though.
The fillet I ordered was medium rare, and was delicious, loved the way that it was cooked and the meat just melted in my mouth!! Probably one of the best steaks I have had in a while.
Our waiter was very attentive and was always there if we needed refills of wine or water and to clear up the table.
Overall I give it 2 thumbs up, I was extremely satisfied with the food, service and ambiance. Great place for a nice date!
Went to Blackstone for the first time on our 27th anniversary and we loved it. I got the turkey meatloaf with mashed potatoes. My wife tried the fried shrimp. both were very yummy.
My wife had the walnut salad which looked to good to eat.
I would highly recommend going to Blackstone.... we will be back
Our experience was good - all entrees (4 people) were delicious, portions were bordering on large, and a manager stopped by to check on us. Â Service was just OK. Â They don't split checks very readily. Â The bartender wasn't great at mixing drinks, but the food was yummy enough that we weren't too bothered. Â Not a trendy place at all, very standard "nice" decor (I wouldn't wear jeans), but more special for simple, good-tasting food than anything else. Â We would go back.
Review Source:I've only been here once, and it's been a while, so maybe their service has suffered as of late, a lot of these reviews seem to suggest so. My experience though was quite good.
The place is small, "quaint", without being too dark and creepy. It's better if you dress nice and don't look the part of a bum, but the staff was very friendly when I went, the waiter was well versed on the menu, and a manager came by to check on us. Good stuff. The food was very good too, the steak was cooked as ordered and not dried out, very tasty cut of meat. Sides were good sized, and the meal wasn't terribly expensive, not enough to scare me off anyway. Overall I was very pleased, and aim to go back again soon.
Having visited Blackstone twice now, I feel comfortable giving it a review. I liked it the first time and I liked it ever more when we returned last week. It didn't hurt that I purchased a gift certificate from http://Restaurant.com for 80 percent off, either.
Blackstone is a rather small, understated kind of place, which is what I enjoy. Not a huge, noisy establishment with staff running around like fools. You don't have to wear a tux but you don't see folks wearing flip flops and tube tops either. They have live music on Fridays and Saturdays in the bar, which drifts into the dining room. I like that you can hear it but it's not blaring out your conversation. This makes for a quiet, intimate setting.
Both times we have visited Blackstone, the waiters have been great. They know the menu well and make good recommendations. They don't hover over you but when our beverages were running low, they were refilled quickly. Our waiter was funny, attentive and helpful. And he let us take our time.
My favorite appetizer thus far has been the calamari, something I am pretty picky about. The spicy plum sauce has a bit of a kick but it is very tasty.
I am a steak lover and their filet is incredibly moist and flavorful, some of the best I've had in quite a while. Salads are quite generous.
All in all, I really like this place. It's great for a special date night or to take good friends when you want to splurge a little.
I must say that I am a fan of Blackstone!
However, I have never eaten in the restaurant section, I always eat in the bar section. This is because the bartenders are amazing and provide excellent service. During the week (Mon-Thurs) you can get some of the regular menu items for 1/2 off. The mussels, calamari, and filet mignon are all good. I also enjoy the salmon and their Blackstone salad is really good as well.
They also have live music on Friday and Saturday. It is a lot of fun. The drinks are also strong and well worth the cost. Overall, I would have to recommend Blackstone.
I have eaten at this steak house a few times and never been disappointed until two weeks ago. I wanted to rush on Yelp and share our bad experience as soon as we left, but I decided that since I had met the owner in the past I would reach out to him to try and allow him to acknowledge and/ or resolve my issue before blasting a bad yelp.
Too late, I waited over a week for a response and got nothing.
One Saturday night (two weeks ago) we decided to go to the restaurant since I lived in Vinings and have for my entire life and for the most part have enjoyed Blackstone's restaurant every time I have been there. In fact I convenience the group that we go there because it is similar to an upscale Houston's and Houston's is one of our favorite restaurants.
Our waiter started off by asking us "what would you like to drink". My friend asked the waiter if he could suggest a good bottle of Sauvignon Franc, but meant to ask for a Cab Franc. The waiter stared at us as if he had never heard something so stupid and then asked "do you want white?" "No I want a red please" my friend answered as he was pointing to the section of reds, then your server continued in his tone, "we don't sell Sauvignon Franc (idiot)!!!!",
Then I suggest that my friend was referring to Cab Franc, and we ordered a bottle of Cab Franc, a glass of white, and a bottle of sparking water . Besides making us (the customer) feel stupid, the waiter proceeded to ask "HAVE YOU BEEN DRINKING TONIGHT?" I felt this was a very stupid question which my friend answered "no".
The waiter the proceeded to tell us that "I can't serve people who have been drinking".
I believe that the waiter was trying to determine if we had already had too much to drink. Understanding the liability issue facing restaurants and over serving their patrons, I felt as if the waiter thought we were smashed, NOTHING could have been farther from the truth.
Granted we were all young adults who were wearing jeans and collared shirt that were tucked in, but I felt that we were being unfairly judged...I felt as the waiter was abusing his discretion on who to serve, maybe the fact that it was 9:30 and he was ready to go home, maybe?
We quietly got up and left a ten dollar bill for our sparkling water. None of the classic signs of being over serve were exemplified by anyone at our table. What caused him to be so concerned...? Was it because one of his guests asked for a Sauvignon Franc, instead of a Cabernet Franc? REALLY? WHATS UP?
It will take a whole lot for me to ever go back to this place, like someone sticking a gun to my back and saying "eat it up sonny".
With all this said, the food is good here, if you can put up with the sometimes crappy service. My suggestion would be to go to the bar.
They have a great bar scene, and you can eat at the bar.
My boyfriend and I recently went here for our Valentines dinner.
I must say it was probably the best pre- fixed meal that I have ever had.
Everything was delicious and perfectly seasoned. The service was superb and the setting was intimate. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone
Blackstone is a good restaurant. Â Not great but good. Â It has a nice atmosphere, the staff is knowledgeable and it has a nice selection of appetizers, salads and entrees. Â I was a little disappointed by the caliber of some of the ingredients. Â For example the bacon in our wedge salad tasted like Bacon Bits from a jar and the spinach dip tasted like it was just warmed up according to the directions on the box. Â I had the Braised Beef Short Ribs which were very tasty and tender but he fingerling potatoes and beans were a little too al dente for my taste. Â The Key Lime Pie we had for dessert was delicious and tasted homemade. Â
I'm not sure if my problem with the food was due to high expectations (I had heard great things about Blackstone from friends) so I am willing to give this place another try. Â I agree that the price level was just right. Â The entrees are in the $20 range which is less than you would pay at similar places ITP.
Amidst the pouring rain last Thursday night, I paid my first visit to Blackstone, a steakhouse in the growing Smynings area around South Atlanta Rd. I gotta say, I was pretty impressed. It was pleasant to go to a place in this area that appears to be a stand-alone establishment, instead of the Smynings version of another popular intown establishment. Once Atkins Park opened up there, I can't get my friends who live in Smynings back in town anymore. (Oh, and now, McCray's just opened a location on S. Atlanta Rd in the West Village complex, so this task will become infinitely harder.)
The service was decent, though we felt a little rushed when we first sat down. And I was a little annoyed at his insistence to take the extra napkins from our table when I needed them to dry myself off after walking in from the monsoon. But once the meal got going, he did fine.
For an appetizer, a friend and I split an order of the Asian Calamari which was outstanding. Lightly breaded, very tender and served with not an overpowering sweet plum sauce. For my steak, I ordered the "Cowboy Cut" bone-in ribeye. The meat was well marbled and very tender. The au poivre sauce I added was wonderful- full of peppercorns and I liked the fact that it was not as thick as some others I have had recently.
While some of the cuts will compare price-wise with the big boys in town, the meal in total wound up being about 15-20% less than a comparable meal at the high-end places. For example, while my steak cost $39 when the au poivre sauce was added, my friend had the standard rib eye, which was only $28. You do get one side with your steak, so there isn't a big need to order a la carte. And you can't get into too much trouble with the appetizers here- no seafood tower on the menu.
With so many friends living in Smynings today, I can see hitting this place fairly frequently. The steak is definitely worthy, and with the extra $20 saved, that will at least pay for a couple of drinks at the Smynings versions of Atkins Park or McCray's.
