I've been coming here for several months to play trivia on Thursday nights. A few months ago they went through a change of management and I have not been happy with many of the changes they made, i.e., taking away certain drink specials on Thursdays, removing unique items from their menu and replacing them with standard menu items, etc.
However last night I tried to redeem a $10 gift certificate and was told it expired. I obtained the certificate on March 28th, so as of last night it wasn't even a month old. This is highly illegal. On March 23, 2010, the Federal Board Reserve released the following statement:
"The final rules prohibit dormancy, inactivity, and service fees on gift cards unless: (1) the consumer has not used the certificate or card for at least one year; (2) no more than one such fee is charged per month; and (3) the consumer is given clear and conspicuous disclosures about the fees. Expiration dates for funds underlying gift cards must be at least five years after the date of issuance, or five years after the date when funds were last loaded."
When the poor waitress came back to my table to tell me this, I asked her to ask the manager to reconsider, meaning the manager had a chance to correct this illegal action. The response? They would honor no more than half the value of the gift certificate. Completely and totally unacceptable. The management is obviously either ignorant of federal law (doubtful) or is convinced their patrons are either stupid or unwilling to stand up on principle.
