My partner and I happened upon Zapp the afternoon of the Kentucky Derby. I expected a very pewter and ye olde kind of pub, but was pleasantly surprised by the level of gastronomy coming out of the kitchen. The cheese platter was covered with an interesting collection of imported and some locally purveyed artisanal cheeses, with fresh baked baguette and interesting sauces for smearing. I had the steak fritte  which was cooked to perfection. Above all there was Crystal, the bartender, who was training 3 new servers but never missed a beat. She was personable, professional, and very knowledgeable about the menu. Zapp is by far your best choice in Cohasset.
Review Source:Went here for lunch - it seems the reviews for dinner are great, so maybe we will give it another try. The restaurant itself is super cozy and rustic, definitely worth just hanging out at the bar here, but the food was just average. We split the beet salad, which was...one beet cut into quarters and served on a pretty platter? I had a chicken caesar wrap, which was fine -a little bland. My husband had the buffalo chicken sandwich, which I thought was pretty good - he didn't love it. The fries that came with the sandwiches were decent, but most of all, it's the atmosphere and the presentation of the food that get the stars. The flatbreads looked delicious - will have to go back to try one of these.
Review Source:After having been a few years ago upon finding a seasonal coupon, I figured it was time I set foot back in this charming Resto/Pub in the lovely seaside town of Cohasset.
Upon coming back, I noticed the lighting had greatly improved, with a really cool flare scheme going that creates a sexy vibe on the bar side, yet downplayed on the dining room side to evoke a relaxed family friendly vibe. This place should win an award just for the interior design, but of course, I went for the food first and foremost.
The last time I was there, we ordered a great sampling of the menu: Beet Salad, Lobster Bisque, and a Mushroom Flatbread for starters, alongside the Zapp Burger and Prime Rib for the main course. I can enthusiastically recommend all of the above (except for the Bisque, which was good, but not great). The meat especially was extremely well cut, and the thin garlicky fries were a nice touch.
This went down well with the cocktail menu, from which I sampled a Blue Magic, which made me forget it was December, and further stirred up my appetite.
This excellent decadence would not be complete without desert, where we ordered Deep Fried Oreos, served with cream in a nice espresso cup. A+ for taste and presentation.
The staff is attentive and friendly, as is the head chef Rachid, who often comes out of the kitchen to talk with patrons.
All in all, Brasserie Zapp gets my money for best restaurant on the South Shore. A true hit for a wide variety of tastes and crowds.
Went there for a pre-concert meal for the Cohasset Music Circus. Â Take my advice -- try somewhere else. Â This was the complete trifecta: awful food, poor service, and deafening sound.
Let's start with the food. Â I'm a foodie, and I have to say this was the worst single entree I've ever tasted. Â I had mushroom risotto. Â It made me think of an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares" and wonder what was happening in the kitchen. Â It was cold, dense, and most reminded me of the glue-paste that was used in kindergarten. Â We were out with someone for the first time, so I pushed it around my plate. Â The server was not intuitive enough to see 90% of it was left on the plate, and I didn't want to take it home to signal a problem. Â I've made a lot of risotto and even used restaurant prep techniques to make before and finish for a very large audience. Â This tasted like it was completed well in advance and was put into a microwave. Â
It wasn't just the risotto. Â Our bruschetta was on a completely mushy white bread. Â It absorbed an awful (almost spoiled tasting) sauce that was overly dominated by a sharp balsamic vinegar. Â This was the first time the server didn't catch that 2 of the 4 tiny pieces was left on the plate.
My wife had a cod dish. Â It was eatable, but that's about it. Â It also came out cold. Â
Speaking of a problem in the kitchen, 5 of the 6 meals came out fairly quickly. Â At least 4 were cold. Â Then, 10 minutes later (and we picked at out cold dishes out of courtesy), out came a steaming hot pasta dish. Â I don't know if it was tasty, but it was clearly warm.
The staff was sweet but ineffective. Â Forget missing all of the dishes that were not touched. Â The little things -- it took ages to get water refilled. Â There was a table that was totally out of control. Â The whole room was looking at them. Â The staff watched.
Hopefully, this provides enough specific feedback to keep you away!
I'm not a foodie, I don't want my coffee brewed to precisely 187 degrees and triple filtered, I just like good food and a nice atmosphere and it takes just as much for me to post a bad review as it does a good one.
This was not a good experience. The appetizers were bland and the entrees overcooked, not to mention they took forever to come out. A really, really, really long time. Not just I'm hungry and impatient and this seems like a long time, but a really long time. The restaurant wasn't crowded, 9 tables at best.
The staff is very friendly and the chef does come out and interact and he was my bartender for a time (he does pour a pretty bad gin and tonic which is kind of difficult to do). But this place is also listed under The Red Lion Inn and that has reviews where people (although good) say "This place has a bad rap with the locals" which is never a good thing and sadly spot on.
Wish I could give a better review and I hope your experience is better.
Had a Groupon i bought impulsively and was disappointed that i did since the reviews on here are spotty. Â Decided to try anyway. Â Called ahead to make sure Groupon would work, and the chef came on the line to tell me that i could use the groupon if i wanted, with the full prices, but that everything was half off. In the end it was about the same (if factoring in eating the $25 from the groupon - but it happens that bought it for only $10 because of a special deal, so i came out ahead.) Â had i not bought a groupon, this REALLY would have been a steal.
The notes others have made about there not being a hostess and the service being iffy came true. Â And, well, I didnt care. Â It has such a quiet homey feel that while the waitress wasnt nearly as attentive as she could have been, considering she was only serving two tables, i also felt that i could flag her down whenever and she was right there. Â To us, the mellow service seemed in keeping with the ambiance. Â We felt like we could have sat there all night and been content, so we didnt even notice how long it took to get the food. Â it might have been slow, i dont really know.
The food was good - but GREAT for the prices we paid. Â The portions were good size (my girlfriend's steak frites plate was enormous, in particular). Â Presentation and concepts were good but my haddock's texture was a little chewy. Â again, forgivable for the prices: We got a hearty bruschetta app, Â a big salad with my prix fixe, a bottle of wine, the huge steak entree, the haddock leek entree, and a sorbet dessert (again from my prix fixe), all for 58 DOLLARS. For the amount of food and wine we got we could have had a bigger bill at Chilis for chrissakes....
would have given 3 stars for the food if it was the full prices, but it wasnt. Â go here for a cozy quiet night when youve got nowhere else to be.
This place was outstanding, the service was great and even though the waitress was new she still knew exactly what she was doing. The chief would go around and ask the customers if every thing was fine. The only issue was that it took long but that was not an issue specially when you are with someone who you can talk to for a long time, in this case my girlfriend was with me and we were happy that the food took long. We ordered tomato basil soup which was spectacular and for entree my girl friend got lobster fettichini and I got NY steak and lobster. They were phenomenal. When it came to deseert they were all out of creme Burlee so they gave us an other desert on the house. Â Highly suggest this place if u want to eat at a homey restaurant which is very romantic and has good French music :)
Review Source:Was this for real?
The artistry, quality, flavor and culinary art on display at Zapp were unbelievable, especially for the setting and prices! This elegant and historic Inn offered a choice of three distinct dining rooms-- a vibrant bar (complete with booths covered with white animal fur!), a festively decorated dance space and the super-cozy, fire-warmed "Winter Garden" (which I selected). Â The attentive, friendly and down-to-earth wait staff immediately brought out water and a steaming basket of freshly baked bread with delicious basil and garlic-infused oil. Â As the waitress brought out each of dish- both to our table as well as those of our fellow diners- "oohs" and "aahs" ensued as we all shared in the elegant presentations. Â
We started with the marinated beet salad, a well-sized medley of slivered beets served atop mesclun greens with a dijon dressing, adorned with goat cheese and crisp walnuts. I'm glad we planned to share this. Next my father's lobster fettuccine arrived: an entire broiled lobster dominating an abundant plate of tomato-dressed fettuccine. Delectable! Next my leek haddock arrived- an exquisite masterpiece of fresh fish garnished with red sprouts atop bok choy, crisp snap peas and mashed potatoes. My mother's dish was no less appealing or delectable: a perfectly seared trio of beef served atop bright red tomato mashed potatoes with green beans. Â
Even though I wasn't paying the prices were so reasonable! I don't know how they did it! But this is truly a gem that I am going to RAVE about to everyone I know!!!
Ended up here for a very special birthday dinner and was so irritated by the whole experience that we didn't even end up ordering dinner.
First there was no hostess or manager to greet and seat us which always leads to a very awkward feeling of not knowing if you are to wait or seat yourself.
We were finally sat on the cute garden terrace which had the most uncomfortable chairs. After being bitten by a dozen bugs we asked to be moved to a table inside.
It took over 20 min for 1 cocktail to arrive which was made incorrectly. However by the time it did we had already decided not to stay.
The service staff was made up of 4 high school girls that barely knew what they were doing and would have been better working at dairy queen. And one very snooty restaurant mananger that seemed to only greet the tables that had a bottle of wine.
The place was essentially empty for a saturday night and those who were there only had cocktails.
The menu had the all the prices crossed through and new prices written next to them that everything was half off. NEVER a good sign. Makes the place look desperate and tacky. Have some lower priced specials or a separate bar menu, no one wants half priced food. It makes one question if the quality is half as good as well. Which was CLEARLY confirmed with the arrival of the bread basket. It contained 4 tiny slices of bread that were mushed by whomever sliced it and we litterally laughed when we saw them. Each piece was 2 bites at best and the garlic olive oil for dipping was so strong you couldn't get rid of the taste in your mouth.
We waited an additional 20 min for our server to reappear to get the check for one over priced incorrect cocktail and the most pathetic bread basket we've ever seen.
Stay away from this place. We should have, it made for a very memorable birthday dinner.... but not in a good way.
This place is great! I have been there 4 or 5 times this summer now that I live so close by and have yet to have a bad meal. Â
Well- Â not true- Â I ordered the ribs one time to give them a shot and they were bad... Â small - like only 4 short ribs small- Â but this my own fault for being so dumb. Â Who orders ribs in a place like this?!? Me evidently ... oh well. Â I have had the baked crab and shrimp stuffed lobster over and over again however! And it keeps getting better!
Im not sure what the deal is but this place is always borderline empty! Â I hear maybe the ownership changed went downhill and the customers left... Â then it has changed again.... The food, atmosphere, owner, chef... they are all great- Â come on people support this place! Â I think he needs to do a couple groupons or something to jump start. Â Oh and everytime we've gone the menu has still been half price....
