I give this a solid 4 stars based on both the pizza and the bar area. Â Service has always been good and the pizza has been above average - although I do tend to like thin crust pizza and give most places that serve it the benefit of the doubt! Â I also think the value is pretty good considering they provide salad and bread sticks as an included appetizer.
The beer selection is very good as is the happy hour. Â I like the bar area - very chill and I find it a great place to grab a beer.
This is a great little pizza place with a somewhat upscale appearance. The service was excellent, and the prices were reasonable. Â The free focaccia and salad were a nice touch. Â The bread was served with a hearty marinara which we enjoyed. Â The salad was mostly iceberg (which I personally prefer) and was served with a tangy-ranchy-caesary-parm cheese dressing. Â I ordered the Delmonico with steak fries. Â It was simple but cooked well and satisfied my craving for a steak. I will definitely be back!
Review Source:Ordered takeout from here the other night because I had a coupon. Â The place on the inside seemed very nice, I like what they've done with this seemingly cursed location. Â The brief interactions that I had with the waitstaff were very nice, they all seemed cute, happy, collegial, and willing to serve. Â It seemed like the service was pretty good at most of the tables I was looking at around the place. Â Everything was really great... except the pizza.
The pizza was just not great (and thankfully, I had a coupon, otherwise it would have also been crazy expensive). Â For a wood-fired place the crust was way too thick, it was in this strange zone that was too thick to be thin-crust and too thin to be a thick-crust pizza. Â But really a wood fired place should have thin crusts. Â The middle was pretty doughy, and it had no flavor of fire or smoke at all. Â The pizza was also pretty greasy, but that may have been due to the fact that it was take out and the grease came to the top on the drive home. Â One other minor compliant, the menu was extremely busy with very small font.
All in all, great service, but it's a pizza place, and the pizza wasn't good.
Ate lunch here yesterday. We sat down, and ordered right away. There were probably 4 other full tables in there, and a few people sitting at the bar. It literally took us 15 minutes from the time we ordered to get our pizza, it was barely enough time to eat the free salad and breadsticks.
I had been in for drinks with my girlfriend the weekend before. The place was dead on a saturday night at 10pm, but the beer was cold. So we were O.K. with that!
First the good: Really nice layout with two bars - one for the alcohol and the other by the pizza oven (like a pizza sushi bar; High tables and low tables make for a good place to sit down and eat or chill with drinks.
The bad: Why a wood-fired pizza place calls itself  Brick is puzzling. Also the pizza did not have any "fired flavor". The crust was too thick and not crispy enough. For a high-end pizza place, there were too many ingredients and not enough seasoning. (There was almost none.) The pizza tasted like an average upstate NY pie, with a slightly thinner crust and cooked in a better oven.
There were about a dozen or so taps that were all good, but I've come to find that this is standard for Rochester.
This place doesn't seem to have the greatest ratings. I didn't have as bad an experience as some had here. In fact, experience wise, mine was pretty good, but food wise, it was a little disappointing.
We had a bit of a wait to get seated, which seems to follow the general pattern that people have described here, but both the usher and our server were courteous so we had no issues. Our server was also very accommodating with our substitution requests, so service was worth 4 stars.
The menu itself has pretty good selections, and I was excited with the options. We ordered some chicken wings with a couple of different sauces. The cajun sauce was disappointing, while the sweet n sour was pretty good. For the pizzas itself, I think in general there were 2 issues- the pizza was too dry i.e not enough sauce, and it didn't seem as burnt as wood fired pizza needs to be.
There are better wood fired pizza places in Rochester, for sure, so I think I would rather head there than here in future.
My wife and I showed up on a Friday night because of the good things we had heard about this place. Turns out, we should have made reservations, because the place is pretty small and was filled up completely. It was going to be an hour wait, or we could snag a seat at the bar. We still had to wait for a seat at the bar, but I'm glad we did.
The food was really good. We got the Barbq chicken pizza and I'd go back AND wait for an hour just for this. It was great.
My only advice is to make a reservation. Aside from that, great place, nice atmosphere, awesome food, decent help.
Fresh Pizza - Wood Fired - Fast - but not really the greatest :-( Â [okay but not great]
The seafood pasta had a bit too much butter in it - was actually not that great - should have cut the taste with some lemon or white wine. So pasta was disappointing.
Pizza was alright but it's pretty hard to screw up wood-fired pizza (wasn't as crispy as I would have liked)....they seem very rushed and it is endeavoring to become a well oiled machine - looks like they may need more than the one Wood Fired Oven (as it didn't look like a lot of the food was actually wood-fired).
Bread is provided for Entree's - which was fresh baked and warm, and a salad is provided with he Entree's too (the dressing on the salad was actually very tasty)
They are jam packed and during the weekends you do really require a reservation.
I wouldn't go again - I think its the kind of place you go to once and then move onto the next place.
Cozy atmosphere, with pizza oven on prominent display. Â I counted at least 6 girls waiting tables, which seemed a little top heavy considering the place only has about 12 tables. Â It was at capacity at 830 on a Friday, so rather than wait, we opted to belly up to the pizza bar, an elevated seating area just in front of the pizza oven. Â Here you can watch the perfectly choreographed pizza preperation, from the guy flattening dough balls in what looks like a tortilla press, to the dough tosser and topping adder...to the chief pizza consigliere, who deftly manoevred pizzas around the 750 degree wood fired oven with uncanny aplomb in a claustrophobic space that could only very generously be referred to as a pizza kitchen. Â A quality control manager was just to my left, lining up orders and making sure the toppings were as ordered. Â
The draft beer selection is respectable, though fairly run of the mill and unimaginative. Â I opted for the Cascazilla, which is one of the better options among an offering of 15 beers.
Now to the food. Â They do offer burgers, but I believe they are cooked in the back kitchen, and if you really want an amazing burger, you should just proceed directly to The Gate House. Â We didnt order wings, though they are also prepared in the wood fired oven and looked rather tasty. Â We ordered the San Francisco pie, which had a pesto base with sun dried tomatoes, shrimp, goat cheese and mozzerella. Â We requested jalapenos on half. Â Now I am admittedly a pepper snob, and it"s always a disappointment for me to see pickled jalapenos...they often have that industrial briney taste and are usually already devoid of any crunch. Â Putting them in a 750 oven effectively renders them into mush. Â Is it that difficult to use fresh peppers that would caramelize nicely in a brick oven, and still retain their original heat and some crunch? Â I should have asked. Â Anyway, they basically put them on the whole pie. Â To their credit, the toppings guy overheard our discussion that we only ordered on half, and offered to make us a small without, which we declined, not a big deal. Â I would have liked one more minute in the oven for the crust. Â It was perfectly delicious, but could have been a tad crisper...I realize that is a difficult task when you have dense toppings at high heat. Â My biggest problem was the shrimp. Â They were on the small side of small to medium, which would be forgiveable if they weren't completely mushy. Â They lacked any firmness and totally ruined the experience for me. Â Sauteeing or seperately broiling them would have worked much better. Â Tony D's in contrast has the most collosal prawns I've ever experienced, and they are grilled to perfection. Â But back to Brick. Â My last complaint is the goat cheese...I love goat cheese, but it is very rich and a little goes a long way...they were a bit heavy handed, and the result was that the flavors of the pesto anf mozzerella were lost under the blanket of goat cheese. Â Our daughter ordered the mac and cheese pizza which looked tasty, and she seemed to enjoy it thoroughly. Â I won't throw these guys under the bus, the atmosphere is appealing but a few minor changes could greatly improve the food experience.
Always annoyed to have a long wait. They take reservations but could not get past voicemail. Annoying. While we waited there were several empty tables. We were told they were being held for people with reservations. We were finally seated after 30+ minutes at a table that had been empty since we arrived. Once seated the service was a little slow (they only had 2 waitresses - although the managers did step in to help clear etc.). The food was very good and other than the frustration of not being able to get a reservation and having to wait while tables sat empty, we had a good time with our friends.
Review Source:A beautiful day in Rochester spent outside sledding and hauling ourselves up the hill multiple times gave us a great hunger and we decided to burn down some of my "To Try" Yelp bookmarks in a quick tour of the East Side. On stop #1, we tried Brick Wood Fired Pizza which is newest resident of the continually changing restaurant on Monroe Ave next to Sakura Home.
Wanting to keep our order light, we went with the Margherita to benchmark their pizza. We were pleasantly surprised to see that we got complimentary salad and foccacia bread sticks with dipping sauce. The salad was comprised of the standard iceberg salad ingredients and topped witha  decent bleu cheese dressing. No major problems here. The breadsticks were a bit dry or stale and the dipping sauce was more toward a jarred spaghetti sauce than something I would want to have served to me in a restaurant.
The pizza took a few mins to go in while the pizza maker was dealing with takeout orders. The oven was wood fired and appeared to be nice enough although quite large considering they were only cooking one pizza at a time. Despite the fact that we purposefully sat at the bar next to the ove, the pizza maker didn't engage us at all and even threw some dough around when it didn't turn out right. The crust for our Margherita was thin, crispy and had a slight chew which was pleasant and that's just about where the positives end. The sauce reminded me in a bad way to canned pizza sauce with strong tomato paste, dried herb and acidic tastes which is not what I want on my wood fired pizza. The cheese was barely melted and the basil was added as giant leaves. Crust that tastes like an unsalted saltine cracker was a huge negative as well. Seasoning (salt) was almost non existant and there was no balance of flavors.
Even though we were the only customers in the restaurant at the time, our server acted like she was in a huge hurry and offered little to no hospitality. The whole experience was a downer and there is no chance I'd ever go back. If the Margherita pizza and the service we received is any indication, it is only a matter of time until this one bites the dust and we see a new restaurant in it's place.
The food was tasty & flavorful. I award the pizza, pasta, baked wings & simple salad & bread a hearty 'lets eat'! And all that food was for a table of 2.
Brick oven pizza not as crisp as some I've had, but the pesto we subbed on our Mediterranean pizza was outstanding! 2 thumbs up. The veggies were plentiful and our Make Your Own Vodka Linguini w fire roasted chic & veggies was perfect.
Some of the finer restaurant habits that should go w their seating & pricing structure were missed (bringing new plates if you cleared them from the app course, seating a reservation for 7 at a table for nine, bartender mixed 2 bottles of wine into one glass... ) Â - hopefully that's a learning curve w a new place and not a lack of staff training.
Been there twice in four days. Â First trip...Had lunch with a friend. Â We each got a 10" pizza. Â Friend got four cheese. Â I got buffalo chicken. Â We both had great things to say. Â I like that the crust is crispy not soggy. Â It's thin but not too thin, has a good crust. Â Both times I had the whole wheat, which doesn't taste like your typical whole wheat. Â We were surprised when served a salad (loved the homemade dressing) and focaccia bread w/ marinara. Â It was a pleasant surprise and we both loved it all. Â Waitress was attentive as was the rest of the staff. Â We mentioned how much we loved everything and how surprised we were to be served a salad and bread with the pizza...all for $10. Â When mentioning how much we loved the dressing the waitress offered us a side of it to go with our leftovers. Â So leftover buffalo pizza was warmed for dinner. Â Also made a salad and used the dressing....awesome!
2nd trip was with my mother...again we each ordered a 10" whole wheat pizza...her buffalo chicken, me szechwan. Â Buffalo chicken was excellent. The Szechwan was good, however it could have used a touch more sauce. Â The waiter was attentive at first, however I could have used a refill on my water while eating...had to steal mom's. Â Salad and bread were served and delicious.
Will definitely be back.
Stop. Â Right there. Now.
These folks will be in Restaurant Impossible very soon. Â Please mark my words.
Lots of money spent on decor as though you could eat it. Â Zero or little money spent on training the staff. Â So predictable. Â There is no such thing as a great ambiance to eat bad food.
We ordered carry out. Â Bad mistake. Â If we were at the premises we would have returned the food at ONCE!
The Margherita Pizza consisted of not-evenly distributed tomato sauce (very likely from a can) and a few ungenerous blobs of unmelted mozzarella, and burnt basil leaves (please refer to the picture at the gallery). I suggest the owner take a trip to Tony D's, Veneto's, or many other Rochester venues (no affiliation to any BTW) to learn how it is done.
What I can learn from fellow reviewers is that they were lucky or that they eat out so much that they probably do not know how to cook thereby being denied the pleasures of what is possible in a simple kitchen w/o the brick oven.
Wow... open for a week and my review is the fourth? Brick Wood Fired Pizza is on fire! Well, the Pizza oven is wood-fired. Seriously, given the chequered history of this location, it's nice to see someone move in and open a new restaurant there and give it a go. Based on the results of our second visit (yes, this was our second visit. the first was on opening night), I'd say they're off to a good start.
We ventured into Brick @ 6:45 PM (on a Thursday, no less) and were seated promptly. While our server was a mite slow getting our drinks to us, the time was not unreasonable. Again, there was a slight (but tolerable) delay before we got our food ordered. We ordered two ten inch pizzas for four in our party and a burger (with kettle chips) for the fifth. When we asked our server to serve our complimentary salad without tomatoes, she happily obliged. Our pizzas arrived in a reasonable amount of time, with the burger following shortly after (they must've read Tubby T.'s review!).
So what was our final verdict? Well, the wife and I loved our white pizza with sweet sausage, and my daughter & her boyfriend must have felt the same way about their meat lover pizza, because it disappeared! My son polished off his burger with aplomb. I didn't even get a chance to try it (next time!).
While I have had better wood-fired pizzas (Gate House anyone?), I can safely attest that Brick's is the best I've had outside of the city (suggestions?). Â Definitely better than JoJo's... Â And as far as burgers go, they look promising. The only gotcha 9there always has to be one, right?) was that there was a slight mix up in the ordering; My son specifically ordered his burger medium well & when it was served it was medium rare. Not a huge issue for my son as he likes them either way. But for those who like their burgers well done (and you know who you are) Â would do well to clarify that with their server.
Anyway... I liked this place well enough to add it to Yelp after my first visit. And I like it well enough to come back and give it a good review. I hope that Brick does well enough to change the luck this location has had in the past few years.
*Note* updating my rating to five stars due to their *excellent* burgers... my new fave!
went there after 6pm. had to wait for a table. Â our only option for waiting was at the bar. Â a couple of tables became available but it took awhile before we were finally seated. Â wait person took our order for two burgers and a pizza. Â we ordered the pizza as an app but it took 15 minutes to cook a wood fired pizza which was instantly followed by our burgers. Â our burgers cooled off as we ate our white pizza. Â i ordered my burger medium but it was brown in the middle and dry like the bun. Â the other burger was the cordon bleu burger that lacked the creamy blue cheese in its description. Â in summary the food is sub-standard and the service is slow and needs training. Â i have no plans to return.
