We had a rather terrible lunch here, but my husband and guests loved the chocolate cheesecake, raspberry coconut, and lemon curd "gooey bar" cake we were given as consolation prizes.
The setting is cute and everyone in the restaurant was pleasant. Â The crowd was older folks, many retired, some about to reach there. Â I was with my 7 month old in a carrier and nearly 3 year old in a high chair.
We were seated immediately, then waited. Â And waited. We got the bread basket and ordered: medium rare steak for my daughter, mediterranean platter--a cold dish--for me. Â A single person sat in the table next to ours. Â She got her bread and butter. Â Then after water, ordered. Â A table on the patio was seated. They ordered. Â The patio got their food. Â The single person got their food. We were waiting. Â
Amazingly, the kids were quiet for the first 30 minutes, enjoying the brioche and butter. Â Lots of butter. Â They got bored of the bread and butter. Â I was annoyed that we were still waiting. Â Eventually, I flagged down our waiter to ask if there was a problem with our meal--he decided to check on it (same water as for the single person next to us, enjoying her crab cake sandwich).
Waiting, but we had more water.
Kids starting to lose it.
Food brought out. Â The steak was medium WELL. Â Grey. Â When the server was nearby, I let him know that the steak was not medium rare, but we didn't have time to send it back due to a Watershed commitment. My daughter ate the olives from my plate. The steak knife, given to my toddler, I used to saw through the steak. She liked the asparagus, and my olives.
I did ask to see the manager. Â He apologised that they had no control over the timing--they wanted the steak to come out at the same time as the cold platter. Â I let him know that that was great, but that it didn't make sense that a) 2 other tables seated & ordered after us were served before us and b) medium rare is not medium well, & 3) a medium rare steak does not take half an hour to cook. I apologised that my kids got agitated (loud) for the middle section of our time there (they were calm when I spoke to the manager), but seriously, don't serve tables out of order, particularly when it is so obvious. Â I asked that they teach the kitchen how to cook a steak. It's honestly not that difficult to get a cold platter and a steak out at the same time--that's kitchen 101. Â
I hated the babaganous, which was a very thin, unappetizing puree. My infant liked the hummus. The feta was good. The marinated peppers too tarte for my liking; my daughter loved them. The toast was tasty. The bacon was pre-cooked in tiny little strips, cold, obviously prepared in advance.
They offered to take off the steak, I said no, I'll pay for it, as my infant enjoyed it. The bill had MR next to the steak order. Â Grey, with only a hint of pink, isn't medium rare.
We do want to return, as it is a cute place and I'd like to give them a second chance. I like the paint used on the walls, and would like to show it to Jim so see if he agrees that it would be great for our bedroom. Â My guests, last night, loved the desserts.
The experience reminded me of a recent conversation during which everyone crapped on Princeton restaurants and extolled the virtues of restaurants in every other town--where EVERY restaurant is good. Â To the 50% of the 2 restaurants in Rocky Hill I've been to, sure. Â To the ones I've been to in Hopewell? Â I can't say I've been blown over by even one of them.
$33 including tax & tip for lunch.
This was my first time visiting The Brothers Moon after driving by for a good two years. I met with two people for lunch. Â We sat outside, but got to peak inside. Atmosphere for both was quite charming. Our service was kind, informative, and attentive without being overbearing. The best of both worlds. We all thought our food was fantastic. I had the Cuba Luna (Cuba Luna - pressed sandwich: pulled pork, ham, kosher pickle, with sharp mustard and Gruyere on baguette) - so delicious. The pulled pork really shined and paired well with the stone mustard. Others had a sesame chicken salad (sesame dressing, regular chicken, YUM!) and the Moon burger. We were all so excited with how much we enjoyed everything, and are looking forward to coming back again. Totally a great place.
Review Source:We have taken friends and visitors here many times, and everyone always loves it. We are vegan and though the menu doesn't have vegan options usually, if we call ahead Chef Will not only provides options but creates a whole special menu. It's wonderful to have this place in the neighborhood, and really we should take advantage of his willingness to accommodate us more often.
Review Source:We love this place. Â The food is always EXCELLENT, and the service is good to impeccable. Â You never get disappointed here. Â Their Caesar salad, with lots of anchovies is to die for. Â We have been many, many times, and even if it is pricy, it is REAL GOOD FOOD. Â Bring your own wine and they will take care of the rest.
Review Source:Both food & service are excellent here. If you are a meat-lover, try the short-ribs. They are amazing. A long, long time ago, in a galaxy far far away, when it used to be easy to park in Princeton, that town was ideal for a low-key, romantic dinner. Don't get me wrong. I still love to dine in Princeton, but nowadays parking in a deck ($$$) and walking to your destination is mandatory.
So suppose you want to dine in a small town, with a quiet country vibe, that is ideal for walking either before or after dinner? That would be Hopewell, and Brothers Moon is one of the pioneers of great food in this town. You'll need reservations on a weekend night. You can dine here dressed up or down -- whatever mood you're in.
Had our first lunch here today. Great experience, food, price, welcome. Tried 2 soups du jour (cauliflower with scallops and chicken, both delicious), then noodles with shrimps and calamari, chicken and leak quiche, all fantastic. Portion are generous, all for less than $60 with mineral water plus tip. The place is nice and comfortable, and there is a traitor side where you can buy bread, cakes and other niceties. We will definitely come back as we are often in the area. Highly recommended and great quality for the place. Service is also very attentive and dedicated. Such a nice place.
Review Source:My husband and I had lunch at Brothers Moon for the first time today. Now we can add a third great restaurant to our other Hopewell faves: Nomad Pizza and the Blue Bottle Cafe.
My risotto with salmon and shrimp was delicious, as was my husband's salad trio. Portion sizes were just right, neither too small nor too large, and the service was attentive.
There's an impressive dessert selection, too. I recommend the ginger cookies and the chocolate cream cheese brownies.
We have been eating at Brothers for years, Â Love it. Â Lots of fresh ingredients well prepared. Â attentive staff, Â attractive setting. relaxing, reasonable prices. range of dishes to please both my meat eating friends and me. Â I truly don't understand the snarky reviews, Â Not a relative...a local who cares
Review Source:Hands down the best restaurant in Hopewell. Jersey fresh ingredients, perfect ambiance, and a wait staff that is courteous, welcoming, and efficient.
Strawberry shortcake (in season) to DIE for. Caramelized Onion and Goat Cheese Tart that is second to none.
Fantastic, creative food, less the pretension and self-importance of many other restaurants in the area.
Awesome to-go options, as well. And red velvet whoopie pies that I have no words for.
Recently went for brunch with the kids, and it was just as fantastic an experience as a cozy dinner with the grown-ups.
Byo- always a plus
Went for the first time and had a wonderful meal. The menu is well rounded - something for everyone, and they were happy to accommodate a gluten free request from my wife with no trouble at all.
The baked foods in the front of the restaurant looked great - will need to try them next time. Service was very good, meals plated nicely and served hot.
Will have to come back for the outdoor seating.
RUN do not walk away from this place. My boyfriend and I stopped here for lunch. Any of the good reviews must have been written by relatives. Â
I ordered the crabcake sandwich which was obviously prepared a few days ago. It was a thin layer of partially edible crabmeat. It might have best been used as a puck for the next Flyer's game.
Mikes roast beef sandwich was mostly greens and little beef. He complained and got/ more beef that was thick. Â
The busboy was cute and attentive.
I must say that the dearth of reviews for this place leaves this place looking less than stellar based on the bias of reviews. LAME.
I came here for the first time last weekend with my family, and all parties (including those who are notoriously hard to please) were most satisfied. This place does a great job with FRESH ingredients (not to be taken for granted) and does a pretty solid job of mixing flavor combinations. I had a special for the night (quinoa, sugar snap peas, and salmon) and it was most delicious.
I really appreciated the outdoor seating, which in a town like Hopewell, is downright "down home quintessential American Summer." The waitstaff, while young and somewhat inexperienced, is friendly and eager to please.
While I definitely recommend this place, I do have to wonder why they sell Idaho potatoes and dog treats by the register?
Important note for those who imbibe: BYOB
I can't believe I haven't written a review about Brothers Moon yet! I've eaten here several times and fully enjoyed each... I guess I assumed I'd written about it after the first!
Anyway, I started eating at Brothers Moon about 2 years ago and have never been disappointed. The menu changes regularly and they always have something enticing and delicious for everyone. And though I haven't tried their baked goods that they sell up front, I hear they're good!
On my most recent visit, I had grilled swordfish with asparagus and enoki mushrooms.... delicious!!!!!! My friends ordered the polenta, the mediterranean platter, and the scallop salad and every place was practically licked clean. Â We each ordered a dessert and LOVED all of it... I had the carrot cake cheesecake, another friend got ice cream, another the peanut butter cup, and another the creme brulee. A good ending to a great meal.
What I love about Brothers Moon:
* the blue and yellow decor
* outdoor seating
* wonderful service (super friendly and quick)
* delicious food
* interesting and changing menu options
* offer lots and lots of local foods
* BYOB!!!
Only complaints: Â though my friend's scallop salad was delicious and the scallops were cooked perfectly, I feel that it was much too small for $15... some greens and only two scallops. Aside from the size of her plate, we were all happy : )
Nice date atmosphere. Not the cheapest place in town, but I feel it was a good deal given the quality of service and food. The meal was insane-good. I usually don't get excited about food, good or bad, and I've never written a review for any restaurant, but the meal I had last night was out of this world. Chef Wil made what has to be the perfect lasagna - at least that I've ever had. I'm sure I don't have the same taste as everyone out there, but for me, the whole thing was a home run.
Review Source:For those of you who do not want to read the whole thing here it is....unless nothing else is open and you can not go home and cook do not go!
I also like to say something nice before i start ripping the house down....
I went about two months ago...
Portions are large and in many cases made up for the lack of excitement in the dish.
This is going to be fun...i have been waiting to share my thoughts on this place (oh i did. I called about 5 people right after and let them know my thoughts) for a while now.
I went to brothers moon after hearing some good things from people our parents know. I went with 4 friends (we are all either chefs or servers at another place) and brought three bottles of wine with us.
From the start Brothers Moon wowed us...
We were sat and then not seen again for a good 10 minutes. After being greeted we placed out orders. We all wanted the scallop appetizer but they only had one left, so the rest of us had some sort of cheese tort.
Two of us ordered the lamb and the other two got the chicken with bread pudding (i order bread pudding every time it is my fav).
The lamb was the biggest serving of lamb i have ever seen at a restaurant. And the chicken was the smallest portion of chicken i have ever seen at a restaurant.
Both were unexciting and we all agreed something our mothers could of cooked (our mothers are all good cooks but nothing amazing, Shhh do not tell her!)
The service was awful. The place was not packed either so i am not sure what the problem was. Maybe they saw four young guys and thought "they will not care if i take a shift off", wrong four jackass!
Bottom line if you know how to bread chicken cutlets and make a cake from scratch no need to visit this "gem"!
We went to the Brothers Moon for New Years Eve dinner, an expensive meal that was disappointing at first before we found some redemption with the main course and dessert. This review starts out bad, but keep reading because it does get better and in the end, we do hope to return.
We expected it to be expensive, everything is on NYE, but at $89 per person without a wine paring (the joint is BYOB), I guess we just expected a little bit more, or at least for everything to be very good, which it wasn't. Parts were very good, other parts of the meal were not.
The starter that all patrons were served, the amuse-bouche, was just bad. The ingredients on paper sounded splendid, but three of four in our party remarked that it pretty much just tasted as if we were served a tablespoon of vinegar. Not good at all. Bad bad bad.
Then the soups came, which were both between not tasty and bad. Really really disappointing.
Then the redemption began with the salad course, thank God. The scallop dish and the beet salad were both great.
Redemption continued with the entrees, which were all very good to great. The beef filet mignon was served as a surf-and-turf with shrimp. The shrimp was overcooked and kind of a throwaway but the steak was perfectly cooked, wonderfully juicy and flavorful. I had the chicken dish, which was absolutely delicious.
Then the best part? The desserts. We each tried a different dessert and shared them all -- all were spectacular. We loved the churro so much we jokingly asked for another one to share and they actually brought it for us. An extra $10 well spent.
Service was mediocre but fine. The atmosphere was pretty good, too. We actually are excited to go back and try again on a day that is not one of the most hectic food service days of the year, hoping to find that The Brothers Moon might be a good go to place for fancier dinners, birthdays and such. But at the same time, we understand where the other mediocre reviews are coming from... we'll see and our fingers are crossed!
Fantastic meal from start to finish. My wife and I split appys. The grilled scallops were cooked perfectly and served on a bed of not over-dressed salad that had a beautiful citrus flavor. My wife got the lobster served on a bed of corn flavored with vanilla and ginger. All I can say is wow, that was really special. The local roasted chicken with black trumpet mushrooms was just the kind of comfort food you'd want on a cool fall evening. My thyme and garlic marinated grilled shrimp with the house mac and cheese was also fantastic. The shrimp were cooked perfectly..just so you get that little pop when you bite into them. The mac and cheese is a very light version, not at all heavy and served with some grilled zucchini. Bring a nice Sancerre and a Rhone red and you are on cloud 9. Service was great. Cheers.
Review Source:When it comes to my lunch... I am always craving the same thing--A great gourmet sandwich on the tastiest bread possible, which is usually a ciabatta or sourdough. Sometimes I'll be adventurous and get a rye. I know, I live life on the edge.
So, when it came to my lunch at The Brother's Moon I was excited to stuff my face full of the gourmet local market items they touted on their menu. While everything sounded terrific on the menu, The Brother's Moon missed the mark on actual execution. If I could give 1/2 stars, this place would only get 2.5 stars from me. Why? Here are a few reasons:
-My lobster bisque lacked the main ingredient, lobster, and was thinner than a chicken soup with a heftier price tag
- The onion tartlet was dried out and clearly prepared earlier in the week. It lacked flavor and crumbled in my mouth like a Ritz cracker
-The pickle that was served with my lunch was BRINED not pickled. It seriously tasted like the saltiest cucumber EVER
-My sandwich was dry (seeing a theme here?!). By skimping on the tomato pesto, the combination of ciabatta bread, feta, and grilled chicken gave me worse cottonmouth since that one bong rip I took in college.
So, while its sad to say.... I think Panera Bread makes a better lunch than this place for half the price.
Ate here on a date with my wife. Overall we were very pleased. I had the salmon for starters with creme fraiche and potato chips and then the beef tenderloin with mash and veggies. The salmon was tasty but a little unadventurous but the steak was cooked to perfection. My wife had a very nice goat cheese and onion tart for starters and a seafood risotto that certainly filled her up and was very nice. We shared creme brulee for afters. Â They don't have a drinks license but there is a liquor store a few minutes walk away that was open. Great service, great food and not too super expensive. Nice laid back and casual ambiance.
Review Source:I have to be honest, although I live in Hopewell, I rarely get into the Boro, mostly because it's not a convenient way for me to get home from work. That being said, today I had a forced day off from work being I was recovering from a medical procedure. I had doctors orders to take it easy but after a day or two home was feeling like I had to get out.
Anyway, back to the review... my husband and I decided to venture into Brothers Moon for a mid day meal and we had a very nice experience. We sat outside (which was a bit louder than I like because of motorcycles) and our waiter was wonderful. I had the quiche and my husband had a sandwich, both of which were very tasty. The fresh baked bread was also a treat. We will definitely go back for dinner and we have already recommended the restaurant to some family who have never been there.
My date and I spotted this place earlier driving through the area. It was our first time in the area, and it looked like a nice place with outside seating. There was also a sign out front that said "Eat here, PLEASE" so we felt they must be hurting from the economy and decided to give it a try. It was early evening/late afternoon, and it wasn't crowded at all. After eating here, I don't think it is the economy that was their problem.
The previous reviewers description of "underwhelmed" was spot on. The place looked like it was going to be great. I ordered a risotto. It was very watery and extremely salty. My date had the gnocchi, which looked and tasted like soggy bread. The salad we had was okay.
The staff was very attentive, and we were also offered an amuse-bouche. However I felt like I paid $30 for a bowl of soup with some rice in it (my risotto). At that price level, there are much better options in the area. I would not go again.
I feel guilty giving these guys only three stars because they try very hard and because the front of the restaurant is beautifully decorated. Â On the other hand, I was underwhelmed by what I was served: a vinaigrette salad with organic mixed greens, a morel and asparagus risotto, and a very sweet apple streusel with mixed berries and a small quantity of intense ice cream. Â This sounds pretty good, actually -- talk about jaded palates! Â Perhaps the real problem is that I was with a group of 35 people. Â We had half the restaurant, and the other half was full as well. Â The kitchen staff must have been in up to their necks! Â
If I lived in the area, I would give this place another chance. Â The diners outside our group seemed like a happy bunch. Â They probably were especially happy about the fact that the establishment has no liquor license, so people are forced to bring in their own wines! Â As you come in from the street, there's a deli counter to the left with prepared foods of all kinds. Â This looked interesting to me, and I'd certainly come by a few times if I lived in the area.
A minor detail: Our group was served "passed hors d'oeuvres" after we arrived but before we sat down to our meal. Â The people who proffer such things normally offer paper napkins along with the snacks. Â None were in sight. Â Most people who eat a tartine with smoked salmon and celery remoulade while talking with their friends find the need to wipe their hands or mouths when they're done. Â No way to wipe, so I was very careful and stayed clean.
