I've been frequenting BW3's since traveling it's home in the Twin Cities in college.
I was thrilled when they opened in Ankeny. This location has been a popular rallying point for friends and I for over a year when looking for a place to watch hockey games on TV. Â Due to their large number of TVs we've never worried about being able to catch. Â It's usually fairly crowded.
On Saturday we stopped here for the sole purpose of watching game 1 of the Stanley Cup finals. Â Unfortunately the world championship of hockey was relegated to one period on two small TVs. Â Apparently this is a big UFC hangout, which I respect. Â
They've got the NTN Trivia which has proven over the years to be a lot of fun as you can compete against other patrons in the building and nationwide.
There's a pretty extensive menu featuring a lot of items beyond wings. Â But for me the wings are the reason I choose to come here. Â I would recommend that you stick with the traditional meat on the bone wings and pass on the boneless variety. Â The latest batch I had of the boneless seemed to be mostly very hard breading. Â The sauces are superb and you can mix-and-match your order with various sauces.
I've been to several other BWWs, and this one is by far the lamest. Â 3 reasons...
1. Â It's small. Â Smaller than a normal BWWs.
2. Â It's bright. Â Why would you have the lights so bright in a bar?
3. Â I really don't have a 3rd reason, although there probably is one.
It's basically a lame BWWs. Â Go there once a year for a wing craving or to watch a sporting event you can't get at home, but stay away if you're looking for a fun place to hang out.
After living in Buffalo, NY for a couple of years, it feels good to have a little taste of my time there. Buffalo Wild Wings has a decent little franchise in Ankeny.
2 things to note.
I only order wings.
I usually order Asian Zing, Medium, Jerk, or Mild wings when not on wings/legs night. (if you go, get every flavor and try it. I go crazy with every flavor on those nights)
Food is good, but service can be a little slow here. The place seems to be packed every Fri or Sat night.
Reasons to go:
1. Wings are awesome with flavors no one has. They are also more authentic than any other joints around.
2. Beer in schooners at decent prices. Can also get Labatt (ahhh Buffalo)
3. Trivia.
Not bad, for what it is - a sports bar with an extensive menu of wings and beer.
There's not much to the atmosphere - it's basically just one big room, with only five booths and the rest of the seating in tables, plus a bar behind a half wall. Lots and lots of TVs for sports, but we were also pretty excited that they're hooked into buzzline trivia - we got our game controller and played for a long time. Â This effectively distracted us from the fact that the food wasn't really that good.
Here's what we tried:
Breaded  garlic mushrooms - meh.  I had two that were still frozen in the middle - good dipping sauce, boring breading.  Breaded mushrooms aren't good when they're not piping hot and liquidy inside.
Potato wedges with cheese - seemed like they had been sitting awhile. Â Not much seasoning, rubbery cheese on top, and the overcooked potatoes themselves were falling apart.
6 wings with garlic BBQ sauce - OK. Â The sauce felt thick and solidified, just wasn't that great.
French fries -so salty we could barely eat them without gulping down water. Â They actually would have been pretty good if they hadn't been so oversalted.
Coleslaw - decent. Â
6 wings with hot BBQ sauce - the best thing we had. Â This was the best sauce, although I was irked that you get blue cheese OR celery free - not both. Â Don't they know every other restaurant gives you both??
Ribs - ugh. Â Just terrible. Â Very little sauce on them, very fatty, and the sauce that we could taste was bland and unflavorful. Â I know this is a wing joint (and a chain to boot), but there is no excuse for serving bad ribs when you are in the midwest. Â
The wings were pretty well-priced, and were probably the only thing we tried that we would actually order again - simply because we liked the hot BBQ sauce. Â I think it's great to have a nice big sports bar like this in Ankeny, but I do think its value is purely as a sports bar and I probably wouldn't eat here again. Â That said, our beers were awfully expensive - nearly $6 each - so even with the added draw of trivia, I am not sure we'll be back anytime soon. Â
The highlight of our evening was when a table full of little league players came in and joined the ongoing trivia game. Â We learned quickly that they were listening in on our discussions for clues to the right answers, so we started purposefully shouting out the wrong answers to throw them off. Â I know, I know... but it was funny.
