BuuuullllldAaaaawwwwwggg! Mid Citayyyy! Yeah I don't care what you uptown clowns say, this is THE Bulldog.
My favorite bartender of all times is in this establishment - Stevie and he keeps em coming cold n fresh.
I could stay here all night, in fact I have stayed here until they ran everyone out with some weird Ali baba music that you hear in a Lebanese restaurant. That's their way of saying "good night, GTFO" but that's cool. Otherwise they play GREAT music here and I think it's kind of cute how most of the guys crowd around the entrance so when you raise your drink to keep it out of the way you have no choice but to rub your boobs on some of them. It's clever I'll give it to em!
Best part? Hipster free. Because this is Mid City almost Lakeview. They don't venture here.
I heart this place hardcore.
Great memories made here.
Great lawn men made here too. Cute little Tulane grads with worthless degrees who will come over and mow the lawn shirt free? Oh yeah, this is where they congregate.
When I think of bars, I can't help but think of loud music and obnoxious people. Why can't there be a bar that's chill with space to move, music that's fun and not too loud so you can actually have a conversation? Oh wait! That's The Bulldog Mid City!
I completely enjoyed the outdoor patio even in the drizzling rain. Gabe and I went here after our dinner at Luke at his suggestion. He was a regular here awhile back and always talked about how I might like it. I loved it! Great old school music and such a variety too. The crowd was in the 30-something range.... late 30's and older maybe.
What I usually hate about bars is how cramped and stuffy they can be. The outdoor patio gives us claustrophobs a place to not freak out while looking for a stool near the exit.
The canopy of trees with lanterns and string of lights are a nice touch. Definitely look forward to going back. Â
I couldn't think of a reason not to give it 5 stars.
Great music, beer, atmosphere and company!
It's funny how as we get older our tastes change. Â As a young whipper snapper 15 years ago I loved the Magazine location. Â I was there on weekends in college and after work on weekdays once college ended. Â It was my favorite watering hole. Â Things change, get married, spit out some kids, get divorced and the Magazine location didn't have the same feel. Â I felt a little out of place. Â
Enter the Mid City location. Â aka the grownup addition on the Bulldog. Â It's more sophisticated yet still has the same 50 beers on tap, tons more in bottle and good bar food. Â This place actually furnished my glassware with their "buy a pint, keep a glass" Wednesdays. (Not sure if that still exists though).
We came here last Saturday night after a very long absence for me and it was still perfect. Â Ample seating indoor and out. Â Everything from barstools, high top tables, low tables, couches inside and , picnic tables and patio furniture outside. Â What ever tickles your fancy or buttocks. Â The beer selection is plentiful with what ever style you like. Â The bartenders are knowledgeable and can help you make your selection. Â The have shuffleboard which is the greatest bar game ever and the music selection while not live is great! Â I was able to hear Dr. John, Public Enemy, Old Aerosmith, Eric B. and Rakim and some song called "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd". Â Perfection! Â
I love this bar and will not wait so long to come back next time
This is my favorite Bulldog location, its more spacious on the inside and outside and its easy for most people to get to. The Bulldog has a huge draft beer selection, which is what most people I see in there drinking. I wouldn't go for mixed drinks or wine, but they have them if you must. Every Wednesday is pint night and you can keep the glass. They have good bar food, but none of the sandwiches or burgers come with a side like they do at Lagers even though its the same price. They do a lot for the SPCA so have another, its for a good cause.
Review Source:While I'm a fan of this place overall, my one piece of advice would be- do NOT go here if you're hungry! I went recently and ordered some spinach dip, hubby got a burger. Didn't expect a lot, but the spinach dip was seriously one of the biggest food rip-offs I've ever seen, even for bar food. It was literally the portion size I would feed to a cat, (albeit with plenty of pita triangles,) and was nine bucks! It was literally 2 oz of dip, with cheese sprinkled on top, microwaved in a plastic cup. I took a picture at the time, just because I thought it was literally funny. I would have said something, but the only two employees who seemed to be there were the one lone bartender waiting on the whole bartop and the patrons at all the tables inside and out, and the food guy in the window where I ordered it, who didn't seem like he'd have had the authority to take it back. Husbands burger was average, but for another nine bucks could have come with a bag of chips at least. Soo... in conclusion, go for the beer list and garden. And that's it.
Review Source:This Bulldog is MUCH preferred to the Magazine location. The beer selection is about as good as you'll get in NOLA, plus they have new stuff in rotation all the time (if you become their fan on facebook, they update you when they're opening up a keg of something special so you can get your hiney down there to try it out if you're into that kind of thing). The location is quite large; I've never had trouble finding a table, though I haven't been on the weekends. They have trivia on Tuesdays which I enjoy, though there do tend to be some douchey groups with like 10 people in them that my humble group of 2 just can't compete with.
The thing I just can't get over is the price. How is something in NOLA this expensive--especially something out in the boonies, not on Bourbon or Magazine? I've read their responses to some reviews that their prices have risen only with inflation, yada yada, but man, you can get way drunker for way less $$ at about 1000 other places within a 5 mile radius of this place. Even their happy hour specials are not that appealing.
So, if you're really into trying all the different types of beers, it's definitely worth frequenting this place. They make an effort to keep the tasty beers coming, and will recommend things to you if you ask. But if you're a teacher on a budget with noticeably poor taste in beer, like me...perhaps try something else.
I am a huge fan of the Uptown location of the Bulldog. I am not a huge fan of this location.
you would think that as much time as I spent at this location prior to it being the Bulldog that I would love it here. problem is that I never liked it back when it was Parkway or Par-4 or whatever it was back in the 90s. Sure bulldog has updated the bar and added a boatload of beers, I can't bring myself to enjoy it as much as the uptown location.
The one really cool thing this location does have is their outside patio. This would be the perfect place to sit on a nice night with friends.
if you are in Mid-City or Lakeview and want beer, I would give this place a try, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get there.
Ahh Bulldog! So many memories and so little time! Where shall I begin? Now that I live here in Mid-City perhaps I take the Bulldog for granted since it's in my hood. Â But back in the day when I rolled deep with my church group this was our go to social place. When I say roll deep I mean like 15-20 people and we all wanted to eat or drink etc. We would usually go outside to the spacious back patio and take over a picnic table.
There have also been times with friends have rented out. The gated back patio (ie. a friend's Saints watching birthday party during the day, my friend's graduation party, my frkend's going away party, you get the picture!). Many a day and night have I danced in the gated patio!
The burgers are delicious! I liked the one with blue cheese, and I added bacon on it! Yummy! Plus they have cider on tap which even though I rarely drink I sometimes indulge!
Bonus for allowing dogs on the back patio. I love dogs so it's a win-win situation! One of my guy friends brought his unruly black lab and people were cool.
Two of my friends actually met at this Bulldog and ended up getting married and have a baby so it has a special place in my heart!
The bartenders are super nice too!
I prefer this Bulldog to the other one because it's so much larger, has a separate parking lot, and is closer to me!
Happy drinking!
The Bulldog is one of New Orleans' best bars. Hands down. No where will you find a wider selection of beers both on tap and bottled. So many in fact that their beer menu is divided into different countries. This location sets itself apart from it's sister locations (Lagers of Metairie and the Bulldog on Magazine) because it takes the best of both and puts them together to create a great bar with a great atmosphere and great food. Wednesday nights are usually the most crowded nights and has been that way since even before The Bulldog moved into the old Parkway spot so get there early if you want a table. Plus I love the fact that this place is dog friendly! The patio area even has a little water fountain where pets can get their drink on. This location really has a lot going for it and is one of my favorite hangouts when I want a specific kind of beer.
Would have given it that fifth star if not for the fact that parking can be a real pain if the parking lot is full. Wednesday nights, especially.
This is my favorite bar in New Orleans.  They have an amazing outdoor space (with huge fans so it's temperate even in a Nola summer).  The beer selection is ridiculously large and they're always featuring new brews.  They serve great pub food made on the premises.  There aren't  many places in this town that meet all of those criteria.
Not only that, but it gets a decent crowd even on weeknights (especially Wednesday with the free pint glasses). Â AND you can bring your dog. Â I don't have a dog, but if I did I would be pretty happy about a bar that I could take it to---that cuts out half of the work of meeting people using your cute dog.
Also, the raspberry vinaigrette goes great with everything (it comes on the California Fire Grilled Chicken Sandwich). Â I don't usually eat at this location, but at the Lagers that these guys also own, I put the raspberry vinaigrette on the blackened chicken sandwich and it is awesome.
The only thing that would make me happier is if they opened a Lagers style eatery in Mid-City with all of the outdoor space that the Bulldog locations have.
I usually choose to not come here even though it's not that far from my house only because I don't drink beer, and this place is known for its beer.
Even though I'm not a beer drinker, I do enjoy the atmosphere of this place. It's great for groups and casually hanging out with friends. I love the outside part of it. It's also a lot of fun to come to when there is a game on T.V.
I don't drink, but I came here with my boyfriend and our friend so they could try some different beers and we could all hang out and it was awesome!
There were pictures of dogs everywhere [I'm a dog lover], nice big tvs, lots of seating with long tables so if you wanted to, you could pull up a bunch of stools and have a big group of friends sit with you.
They're famous for their huge selection of beer on tap, but they've got other stuff too. I was actually stoked to get a bottle of Abita root beer! Loved it.
They also have a huge menu full of great food! We got a ton of chips and salsa and queso, I think their queso was more of a nacho cheese though. Still good regardless.
It wasn't crowded at all, but it wasn't empty. I had a lot of fun there, and I usually hate the bar experience. I'd love to go back. :]
The better Bulldog BY FAR. Â This place is larger than the Magazine Bulldog, nicer than the Magazine Bulldog and has far less fraternity douche bags than the Magazine Bulldog.
The selection of beer is pretty good. Â Nothing spectacular; but better than 99% of the bars out there. Â Â
The food is also pretty good. Â I like the grilled chicken sandwich with buffalo sauce, blue cheese and bacon. Â The fries are waffled, which is the superior fry configuration because they can support more ketchup, mustard, cheese, what have you. Â
The outdoor patio is dog friendly and I love the lanterns and the long benches. Â It's definitely a cool place. Â I like it late at night when the crowd has thinned out and you're essentially drunk in a quiet grave yard (since there's a grave yard right there, I'm not speaking metaphorically). Â
Pro tip, at closing time if you just act like you know what you're doing, they'll usually let you keep the pint glass.
Don't order food from the kitchen, it really sucks. Anything that came from the fryer was underdone. The straight fries were raw in the middle and the soggy "southwest" eggrolls still had hard cheese in the center. My husband ordered a burger which was ok except that the cheese again was a giant pile of unmelted hard processed shreds. Also, several giant center rings of a raw red onion thrown on the top are usually pretty unappetizing to most people as well.
Can't this place make any effort at all when it comes to food? I understand that it's consumed by drunk customers but even though I was definitely buzzed, the food was just crap. With 2 guys in the kitchen they could have at least tried.
The first thing I always notice when I walk into The Bulldog: it's dark. Really, really dark compared to the bright sun outside. But once my eyes adjust thirty seconds later I'm ready to order a pint and maybe get some of your standard bar grub. Burgers, check. Chicken strips, check. Fries and nachos, check.
So, what makes it different? A big outdoor section that is dog friendly. In fact, I've never been to The Bulldog and not seen a couple of canines sitting outside enjoying some water while I enjoy my beer.
I always enjoy sharing an afternoon with some four legged friends. Now where did a leave that tennis ball?
I lived uptown for four years and frequented the Bulldog on Wednesdays. I loved all the beer options, the free glasses, and the ourdoor seating (although crowded)
Then I moved to Mid-city and decided to check out the lesser-known Bulldog. The bulldog on Canal is far superior. The bartenders are great and I love the eerie feeling of being surrounded by graveyards. The bar is more spacious. There is a big outdoor area as well as a separate "private outdoor area" which is sometimes open for all. When it's cold out there are blankets for use! And the best part about the midcity bulldog? Not being surrounded, literally, by overdressed Tulane girls!! Some people may be nicely dressed at the midcity bulldog but that is because they are coming from work, not getting dolled up to go to a crowded beer bar.
And you still get free cups on wednesdays!
I love this Bulldog so much more than the uptown location. Â The digs are swank, I have never been when it's super crowded, the staff is friendly, and, of curse, the beer selection is superb. Â Parking is something of an issue, but, given the CF that is Magazine Street, I'll take this any day in comparison. Â This is a wonderful place to go for happy hour. I particularly like the library sitting area (super cozy and decorated like like a lush's living room), and I always think to myself that I need to go there for a football game someday.
Review Source:This is a fantastic bar with an extensive beer selection. Â
If you are looking for a place that can accommodate a crowd, this is the place. The courtyard has long tables that can fit a bunch of people. I also noticed a private area in the courtyard you can reserve for private parties.
The bar is very low key and also dog friendly, which is cool. Order your beer at the bar (if you want frosted glasses, you need to request them) and order the food at the little window to the left of the bar.
I've had both the bleu cheese burger  and the California chicken sandwich--both were large and tasty. You also can't go wrong with the sweet potato fries!
This is my go-to bar in mid city.
My favorite bar in all of New Orleans. Unlike the Magazine st. location, the Mid-City Bulldog is nice and large and there is always a place to sit whether it's inside the wood-paneled bar or outside in the beer garden. Another reason it's amazing is because of the beer selection. They have an entire wall of taps and (if you go on a Wednesday) you get to keep your pint glass (they're the only drinking glasses I have in my kitchen).
With that said, if you return 20 bulldog pint glasses, you get a free t-shirt! Also, they constantly support the LA-SPCA and you are always welcome to bring your friendly pooch with you. A bar where I can sit with all of my friends, drink many different kinds of beer, eat great bar food (try the nachos, they're massive), AND bring my dog is my idea of bar heaven and that is exactly what the Bulldog has to offer.
My favorite bar in Mid-City!! Not only do they have the best tasting beers around but they also have beers that I enjoy that I just can't find anywhere else like Duvel and Delirium.
The Bulldog has specials almost every weekday. Their most popular special is the Wednesday night pint glass night where you keep the pint glass of the week. I have been here on a few Thursdays too where it is $2 off select pitchers of beer.
Whatever kind of beer you enjoy the Bulldog probably carries it. Whether you like Pale Ales, Pale Lagers (me), IPA, Wheat, Strong Ales (me), or Brown Ales (me again) they got you covered.
Great atmosphere, cool patio area that is dog-friendly, lots of indoor seating, incredible beer selection, reasonable prices, and bar food. Highly recommend if you love beer or if you have a big group with you.
This place was the reason I was so anxious to turn 21. I was one of those people that turned 21 after everyone in the group already did... I'd be bummed when I heard everyone was going out to this place because I wanted to go but knew I couldn't.
Now that the big 21 birthday has passed, I was not disappointed. I have had a lot of fun nights here. I've even come during the day and ordered food, which is not bad.
It has everything a typical bar should have and more. They have every beer imaginable on tap, a descent selection of wine and liqueur. TV's are available for sports fans and it even has an outdoor patio. But, my favorite thing about this place is that it's dog friendly! Dogs are allowed on the patio.
Nothing better than having a drink with man's best friend :)
After a day following the girly around the cemeteries while she took pictures, I was pooped. She was pooped. We were pooped.
So we went to the bulldog. It was a quiet time there (luckily) and not too smoky. SO we ordered a pitcher and went to the courtyard to sip and look over her photo haul. The courtyard was nice and peaceful. The picture wasn't too badly priced and there was an alcoholic snail on our table that would inch its way over to any drops of fallen beer...the beer disappeared and his shell would suddenly go horizontal for a bit. Then it would straighten back up and he'd be headed toward another beer drop.
It was very surreal but at the same time, kind of funny.
The staff were ok. Didn't really have much interaction with them. The menu looked good but a smidgen pricey. We'll go back sometime soon and try the food.
I love this place. It's much quieter than the uptown branch, which can be mercilessly overrun by Tulane students pretty frequently. Their draft and bottle selection is amazing and I don't even drink beer. They do however, carry my girly cider (Woodchuck) and my favorite fancy pants beer (Framboise) in bottle and on tap.
Their food is simple but tasty pub fare. The burgers are huge and juicy and the cheese fries are the perfect drunk snack. A great place to meet for a low-key lunch or drinks after work. And as the name may lead you to understand, dogs are allowed - only on the patio (which itself is a warm and inviting space).
There is no better place to be in Mid City on a Wednesday evening. Â They have a great selection of beer on tap, a very social patio, and better than average bar food. Â I had a "Premium Chicken Sandwich" that made me want to finish every bite. Â I also had their Chips and Salsa that I couldn't put down. Â The salsa is extra spicy which is perfect for my palette. Â The few strategically placed flat screens help you keep an eye on the score while you talk away the night.
Invite your friends and enjoy the scene.
I love the Bulldog, because of their vast beer selection and pretty good food.
The Bulldog mid city is not my regular "home base", but it does have it's high points. Â It's bigger than the Uptown location, which I know that some people would prefer. Â It's much better for bigger groups, because if you have a big group at the other Bulldog, you pretty much have to either get there early and get a table or sit on the patio.
This Bulldog has a really nice patio area. Â I like the way it's decorated with the lanterns and the lights. Â This venue has more of a "lounge" feel to it. Â It's definitely a different vibe than the other one.
I'm giving it 4 stars, only because my personal preference is a place that is a little more intimate, but that's just personal opinion.
The perfect Mid-City watering hole with a sizable beer selection guaranteed to please.
While much bigger compared to it's sister location in Uptown, the Bulldog Mid-City almost always guarantees a place to sit, even on the busiest of nights. Â Where the Uptown crowd is more yuppie, you seem to get a mix of everything here. Â On most nights, you see mostly young college grads, older thirtysomethings, and sometimes the occasional douchers wearing Affliction T-shirts. Â However, don't let the clientele turn you away! Â Find a table and enjoy their wonderful food selection and tasty pub menu.
If you're ever low on glassware, stop by the Bulldog on Wednesday nights. Â For no additional charge you can keep every single pint glass you drink from! Â It's glorious!!
The Bulldog is one of those bars that changes character as the night progresses. It's happy hour crowd is completely different from the night time crowd, which is ok. I like coming in around 5, grabbing some hummus and a pint of something cold and declicious. The beer selection is epic, and the food (that I have tried.. I can't vouch for any meat dishes) is tasty and comes out quickly. Service is OK, but not amazing. The outdoor patio is nice in the fall and spring. Parking is a bastard later at night, as all the neighboring businesses have tow trucks cruising around all night. The parking lot provided turns into a death trap because too many people try to cram in.
Tourists, I would suggest taking the streetcar up to look at the cemetaries, and then walking over to the bulldog for a cold one.
Locals, meet a friend for a drink, try out some pints (and maybe keep the glasses)!
Gooood selection of beer, great patio, multiple bathrooms (in good condition), they care about animals, and the crowd of mostly frat/bro types and yuppies is not as obnoxious as it is elsewhere. Definitely a bar that's better for groups of 4+ rather than pairs. Â
Pro-Tip:
Try not to park on the street especially near the parking lot, especially on a wednesday or weekend. People are going to be driving away shit faced and your car is going to be in DANGER, Will Robinson.
Best bar in Mid City IMHO. Â Extra bonus points for being walking distance from my house, my dog is a welcome guest and they have shuffleboard!! Â
Great weekday happy hour specials, nice outdoor patio, phenomenal beer selection, good bar grub and lots of friendly locals. Â I only wish they were smoke free.
They also support the Louisiana SPCA through their collectable pint glass program. Â Buy a $4.00 pint glass and they donate the entire profit to our local SPCA. Â Return pint glasses you got for free on Wednesday night and they donate 50 cents for each glass.
I come out here for the shuff. The table is kind of weak. It's shorter than others and hasn't been broken in very well. It's still really sticky.
Of course you're reading these reviews for places to drink, and not places to play shuffleboard. In which case, this place should get four stars. The beer is always delicious, and this Bulldog's vibe is much better than the uptown one, which is always way too crowded by my standards.
Group reservations are easier at this location. Â We made a 50 people reservation with a day's notice, and the staff accomodated by letting us show wristbands to put orders on a group tab. Â Kudos to the cook for churning out food for 50 people, with interludes of yummy sweet potato fries, and Wednesday is free collectable pint glass night :)
