This is a true Irish pub. Â Best fish and chips in Frederick. Â Good selection of beer. Â Good live music too. Â It's not fine dining, Â But if you want fish and chips, bangers and mash or shepherd pie, and a Guiness, this place ranks up there. Â The local music is good. Â Darts. Â I don't know what happened about Jennifer's coupon, but the place has changed hands several years ago. Â They are also big on soccer, but it is an Irish pub, not a sports bar. Â I give it high marks.
Review Source:The food here is spectacular. However, the oysters could have been more chilled(they were lukewarm). The burger came out a perfect medium rare and had some good char on it. The Rachel was very tasty however, It would be better if it had more filling(turkey, coleslaw, etc). It seemed a little light especially for the price. The beer list is very nice. There is a nice selection of craft beers. The atmosphere is of a typical Irish Pub. A bit dark and lots of woodwork. I am not sure if they had some flooding previously because when you walk in there is a bit of a musty odor. I will be back for the food though!
Review Source:I love this place in the afternoon before the place gets the evening crowd. The fish and chips are consistently excellent visit after visit. Â The kale appetizer was an eye opener, so delicious. I have never had a problem using a http://restaurant.com coupon but I never go in the evening. The afternoon is best because you can sit at one of the tables by the front and watch the passing parade in downtown Frederick. Servings are large nad be sure to ask for some malt vinegar to go with the fish and chips.
Review Source:I met the love of my life in this bar. Our eyes locked, it was love at first sight. Now, upon planning the wedding, we decided what better place to grab and beer and gush over plans, than the place it all started.
I'm a huge fan of http://restaurant.com and religiously buy coupons to all my favorite places. The first time I was there, googly-eyed perhaps the staff didn't phase me. Not only was my coupon rudely rejected by the OWNER, who was not a pleasant woman to deal with, but the Smithwicks was flat, and we received flak and hesitation when asking for the keg to be checked.
Irish bar, Irish beer. Fail, fail.
Considering my last name to-be is McGeorge I feel like it's all the validation I need.
We wont' be having our rehearsal dinner there. We won't be back at all. Such a shame to have to toss sentimental value over customer service and fresh beer.
It took the 2nd visit to Bushwallers to actually get a table and have dinner. If you go on a Saturday night, I would suggest to arrive prior to 7 PM if you want to get a table. Our first visit a few weeks before in over 10 years resulting in leaving due to the large crowd and rather disorganized waiting list as there was no front hostess to greet you. After 30 minutes and the 2 servers seem consumed by the existing patrons we left disappointed and hungry. Since we had http://restaurant.com coupons (very few Restaurants in Frederick Md. now participate, for some odd reason) we were determined to make one more dining attempt. This time we arrived on a Sat. evening around 6:30 PM and found a table instantly. Both wife and I ordered their acclaimed Fish and Chips entree, and the service was great, and the food was fantastic, the best Fish and chips I have ever had anywhere. We didn't expect a total turnaround but the secret as mentioned appears to be, dine early, or take your chances. Since Bushwallers main attraction appears to be a typical happy hour noisy bar social scene, it was a surprise the cuisine was excellent and at a bargain price with the http://restaurant.com discount. The atmosphere is a little drab, limited seating, but typical of a old established Irish heritage bar restaurant. I'm looking very forward to my next visit to try another dish, but the lure of the Fish & Chips might hook me again.
Review Source:LOVE this place! Â Quaint old tavern. Â Food is good. Service excellent. Â Great to go and watch a football game on a Sunday afternoon. Â The prices are extremely good. You can get basic bar food, but it's done well. Â Also burgers and fries! Food comes out fast even when they are crowded. Â I really hope this place stays the way it is ! It's a perfect spot to just have drinks, or meet up with friends.
Review Source:Aim for Amber to be your bartender. She's the best.
I used to be a Bushwaller's regular when I lived in Frederick. When I think of a classic "bar," I now think of Bushwaller's. They have a lot of beers on tap, not so many that it's a place characterized by its beer list, but enough that you never need to worry about a lack of good choices to suit your mood.
Plus, Natty Bo on tap, so get yours.
Bushwaller's keeps a variety on promotions to keep it a worthwhile destination most nights through the week. Different beer-specials, frequent live musical guests, and a crew of regulars make it one of the only bars in Frederick that you can reliably enjoy on a weeknight.
Wife and I bough a Groupon type deal for Bushwaller's so we thought we would give it a shot...
Man, we are happy we did. Â Fantastic food, great server, good beer.
It is a bar for the most part, so keep that in mind if you aren't up for it. Â We went at 6pm on a Wednesday evening and it was great.
Locals take their spot at the bar. Â Plenty of tables to sit.
We will be back for sure.
FYI - I had the tuna steak...greatness.
The best part about Bushwallers is their live music. I have not eaten there, so i cannot attest to the food, but I doubt I will ever go back for the night life. Â They have great beers on tap, but they severely overcharge for them, it's usually a little dirty and dark, but by far the worst part is the TERRIBLE service. I have been several times, and never seen someone working there smile. They are very rude and charge cover on weekends. There are lots of better options in downtown Frederick!
Review Source:Bar scene if your over 30 flip this one the birdie, as in bypby, baby.
Fredrick this time of year is so seasonal in a good-way, carages and white lights adorn the historic district.
Who knew New York Ave., and Florida atmosphere was available in Frederick?
Bushwallers; I went to see the band; I was really shocked by the Metro-Sexual, males who were more Queens then guys. Kenneth Cole jackets in Navy, cell phones tethered like pacifiers all the dudes. Attention spans are micro- short here, texting boy and girl friends, and gossiping rules in the virtual reality cloud. Reality real time does not exist, their is no present just the next upcoming gig, conquest, buy or deferment.
Made a run up here to check out Soul Gravity. The bar tenders well, sad really,or
they attend to the aggressive drunk crowd.I've been in a better bars; such as Biker bars, in Daytona,Fort Lauderdale. Seriously, it must be hard to work here; dealing with so many temperamental yin, and bitchy yang.
$3 if they have a band, free cover other times.
Getting a rum and coffee was a chore for the poor guy, pout, sigh, beer dudes, but after the kitchen closed, I have to say the bartender did go to the kitchen and get me some crackers. With the sigh..
Chicks in sweaters, dance in 103 degree heat, with leather coats, and boots on. Brain fry, what do they teach in college these days?
Oh went across the street for pizza, and the very attractive girls in front of me;have to play smart and clever aggressively hit on the metro sexual guys." I will take one of those to go too." At which point, hottie dude says he can't eat any more pizza he has to keep his summer form. Must be that time of the month, you know if you are to stay chiseled,on a low fat diet, testosterone is not made in your gut for hooking up. Not to night....Gosh keeping chiseled, starving yourself is so cool, you can see all your own abs. Who needs anyone else? Lost in the mirror.
What looks like a bar from the outside is actually a full-service restaurant with surprisingly excellent food. Bangers/Mash was really good, and the crab dip really exceeded expectations. They fill the crab dip's bread bowl to the fullest -- you won't be disappointed on the portion size!
There are only a few tables in the restaurant, so it doesn't seem like the waitresses could ever have more than four or five tables at a time. That said, our waitress seemed a bit overwhelmed. Refills didn't exist, and she didn't offer to get another beer (missed a sale!). That's a pretty minor complaint, but refills are important to a dining experience. Â Waitress was courteous and timely, she was just a bit busy.
I'll absolutely revisit this place.
I have been to Bushwaller's for the bar scene. They have many great beers on tap. It can get extremely crowded at night, especially when there is a band. The high volume of customers can make for less than friendly bartenders. The service during the day is usually more friendly. The food is surprisingly good pub food. Their reuben is awesome! They also play soccer games and any number of other sports games you might like to enjoy with a beer or a meal.
Review Source:Bushwallers is awesome! The food is simply wonderful, especially if you enjoy hearty, stick-to-your-ribs kind of food. As a fish and chips aficionado, I will have to testify that Bushwallers F&C is one of the more better versions that I've seen as well.
At nights and one weekends the place can get pretty packed, so if you're going strictly for a meal, early evening during the week will definitely be your best bet. The atmosphere is still great even with less people; a sort of rustic, Irish (obviously), pub feel will invite you back again and again ast all times of day!
Great Irish bar, with all the obvious Irish bar positives and negatives, but what is really great is on Saturday night they had a really fun band, everyone was into it and dancing. The beer is cold, the atmosphere is all about fun. Not a place to come for the food, unless it's late night drunken-wings or something, otherwise, turn back the clock and jam on here..
Review Source:This place gets packed, but the bartenders always know your name. Â Bushy's was renovated a couple of years ago and there is no longer smoking indoors in Maryland. Â Both of these are huge upgrades.
In addition every US National soccer game is shown and beer is served. Â I remember during the world cup I was having a beer with my breakfast and watching the game with the rest of the soccer nuts in Frederick.
I love this bar. Â Love it! Â The fish and chips are awesome. Â The bar itself is lovely. Â I've hung at the bar and sat at a table. Â We tried to play darts...but there is only one set of three and the "wings" were falling off. Â But then a band came in...so darts was out...LOL.
Other than needing to bring your own darts...this is a great Irish bar to spend time in.
I was impressed.
My husband and I have been meaning to go to Bushwaller's for months now since we first saw it. My husband has an affinity for Irish pubs for two main reasons: 1. Comfort Food, 2. Guinness. Obviously, Bushwaller's has both of these.
The menu isn't long or varied, but if you're looking for classics like pot roast, shepherds pie, corned beef or bangers and mash, this is your place.
When you first walk in you may be disappointed that the "dining area" is synonymous with a large room with a bar on one side and two rows of tables on the other. But, the bar is long and has plenty of stools and the lighting, live music, beer, and food make up for the lack of a cozy or semi-private space.
Obviously, Guinness is in abundance at this Irish pub (it says on the beer list, we love Guinness, Guinness, and Guinness), but if you're a silly girl like me, they also have a few other lighter options on tap (like Blue Moon).
For an appetizer we ordered the crab dip. It was a bit pricey in my opinion ($11) and while the presentation of the dip in the bread bowl was nice, the only thing to dip with was crackers in their plastic wrappings. I'd rather have slices of bread, or maybe unwrapped crackers. The dip itself was very very creamy - almost too much so - but it didn't stop me from eating way too much of it.
I ordered the pot roast. ($11) It came out with a huge piling of mashed potatoes and three huge slices of pot roast topped with thick brown gravy. It immediately passed the fork test (the moment my fork touched the meat it melted off!) and it was well seasoned. The taste/seasoning was a little different than I'm used to with pot roast, but it was a good and interesting different.
My husband ordered the shepherd's pie ($11). It also came out in a bread bowl. He had plenty to eat and was pleasantly surprised with the amount of beef. His only complaint was that it was a little drier than he likes.
All in all, we will definitely be returning to Bushwaller's. After we finished eating an Irish duo showed up and we smiled as the whole pub clapped along and shouted, knowing all the songs and enjoying every moment.
The wooden floors and well worn decor give the place a nice character. It's a bar where you don't feel bad when some beer spills on the floor. The food menu is typical bar fare leaning towards the Irish style; it's not bad but it won't be winning any awards either. Set your expectations appropriately and you'll be fine. There are usually a couple of decent beers on tap which makes me happy and there's live music a few nights a week.
