Caña y café is a good spot for a group of friends to go and hang out, have a couple of drinks and dance when the place becomes a "club".
On Wednesdays it's karaoke night. It does not get very crowded. They have a menu of mixed drinks ( try the coconut margarita if you are a fan of coconut or piña colada!!) price range is from $5-7.
On Tuesdays it's wing night. 20cents wings with a min order of 10 and a mixed drink ($5-7 until 12).
The wings are blah but the drinks are on point not watered down. The food selection is not that serious very typical.
Hookah is $30. I found it really odd that people are eating and yet the table right next to you is smoking. Idk. It's like weird when your eating and someone's smoke is just floating around your food. Looks pretty cool but not very appetizing.
Customer service: beware!!! On Tuesday night if you get there around 8pm you will have to wait a minimum of 45min!!! Horrible! And the waiter was nice but it's annoying when you have to call him constantly to please get another round of drinks bc we have been sitting with empty cups for a while. Bad service can kill your entire vibe!
Lastly, OMG I almost forgot to mention. At 12am when the place becomes a club on Tuesdays they will kick ur butt out the table and say that they have to take the chairs away and you have to move. Okay so what do I do with the hookah put it on top of my head? Oh no, you have to get bottle service to get your table back. Lmao. That was really upsetting. They didn't even want to compensate aaannnddd they had unoccupied tables the entire night! Idk but by 2am or 3am it's obvious no one is going to buy a bottle if they haven't so maybe it's best to start releasing tables.
In all honesty I do recommend this place. I would probably go back on a Tuesday night just remember to expect a long waiting time. And prepare to walk around with the hookah on top of your head bc you have no table. Lmao. Jk.
Been here twice now for Tuesday wing night. While the staff seems nice in general, the first time I was here our server spilled a margarita in my lap, tried to "clean" it up (while grabbing at my crotch) and took a good 10 minutes to replace it. She was also extremely confused about the idea of separate checks. The second time we were here we had to wait a bit for a table (which I don't mind, I understand it can get busy in popular nights); however, when we were seated it took our server forever to take our order. After that he only visited to check in about once every 15 minutes. Since I drink my margaritas pretty quickly, they definitely lost out--while I could have easily consumed 4 that evening, because of his Iack of attention to our table, I only downed 2. Moreover, the music is repetitive and too loud. I will not be coming back.
Review Source:I went there last Friday, 8/3/13 for dinner, to celebrate a friend's birthday. Â The only thing I can say about this place is....DON'T BOTHER. IT'S A WASTE OF YOUR MONEY!!
Why you ask? Well, after reading this, you will be glad you checked on Yelp!
#1. The place is a restaurant that converts to a lounge. It was deserted except for a handful of customers. On a Friday night?! Bad Omen.
#2. The waitress working our section was abysmal to say the least. She had an attitude from the moment we walked in. Some of our party were already there, one with a child and the stroller. Completely out of the way. When my friend asked for a highchair for her own son, the waitress stated that there was no room because of the stroller. Really?! We asked for it anyway and sure enough, no space problem there! Clearly she did NOT want to be there. Maybe she should have taken a day off. She kept trying to rush us to order; asking if we want to order, what we wanted and we were still trying to relax and get a little drink on.
#3. It took forever to get a drink; annoying me to the point that I could not really enjoy my margarita. (the margarita was good and strong-1 positive thing) My drinks were ordered and never delivered.
#4. It took 30 minutes to get 1 appetizer sampler and another hour to get our entrees. Really?! There wasn't anyone there!!!! And to top it all off, they messed up the order. How the hell is a customer going to tell a waitress that she wants beef and cheese empanadas only and the waitress says that they can't tell because they would need to cut it open to know what kind it is? REALLY?!?!?!?!?!
After all that the price for it all was ridiculous! I did NOT get my money's worth. All I did was pay for the aggravation.
People! Don't waste your hard earned money on this place. There are plenty of restaurants to enjoy in the area.
The most positive experience I had about this place was the surprise of the cute bathroom. Â It wasn't clean, but cute. Â The margaritas are pretty good too - IF you can get one. Â I recently went there for a large birthday party and since we walked in the door at 7pm we were met with the rudest waitress on earth. Â First of all, she wasn'the even presentable. Second, some of our party was already there and one in particular had her son sitting in the booth very well behaved and a stroller with her baby out of the way. Â We showed up with our son as well and asked for a high chair. Â The waitress goes on to say, "her stroller is in the way and the high chair won't fit". Â what?? Â I looked at her and said, "her stroller is not in the way, so go get the high chair". Â I don't know what crawled up her butt but the tone in her voice was unnecessary and neither was the eye rolling. Â Then we asked for our drinks and that went well but she wanted to take our menu's away after ordering appetizers. Â I had to inform the waitress that we were ordering entrees as well so taking the menu away wasn't helping. Â Later I asked for another drink and 1 hour later I never got it. Â That hour later we got our appetizer. Â Then we ordered our entrees and an hour later we got our food. Â Oh, but ordering the entree didn't come without an issue either. Â We asked for the empanadas but two with beef and one with cheese only to be told, "we can't do that". Â Why? Â She says, "because we would have to open them to find out which ones they were". What?? Â You mean to tell me that you haven't the slightest clue what empanada has what inside?? Â Okay, so then she says, "i'll check and get them." Â Then, we asked for the churrasco chicken and she comes back to say, "those plates only come with 'morro' and nothing more". Â Uh....okay. Â Oh and no salad available either at this place even though it's on the menu. Â Overall, we didn't enjoy the experience. We made the best of it, but didn't enjoy the attitude, rudeness, and the amount of TIME it took to get the food and drinks. Â It would be ridiculous to say that they did a great job, because they didn't. Â One last thing, they are over priced and the food isn't even that good for that price. PLUS, one of us even got FOOD POISONING.
Review Source:I stopped in here with someone, mainly because we had to use the restroom badly, and also could use a snack. 6:30 on a Saturday, we were the only ones there. We had the grouper ceviche appetizer and it was very odd. Ceviche is usually made of seafood cubes, or chunks, of various sizes, with a marinade of lime poured over it. In contrast this dish had weird stringy blobs of grouper, leading me to wonder what the hell the person cutting it was thinking. Or were they just tearing it with their hands? Anyway, the fish was submerged in a soup of lime and cilantro, seriously just wayyyy much marinade. They tried to charge me $2 more than what the menu said, which I pointed out to them and the waitress was very nice and she changed it.
Either we made an ordering mistake, and/or there's a reason it's empty 6:30 on a Saturday.
Went here on a Tuesday last minute thing. Â Got there about 11:00ish, people were still dining, we stood at the bar.. $5 dollar margaritas and they were actually really good and strong. Next time... I'm going to try there wings, because O M G people were chowing those wings down, lol.. And the Yuca fries looked good too. At 12 the chairs are moved for dancing, they played good music and their guayava hookah, sooooo freaking good. Me and my man had a great time we left at 4am.. Great spot for a tuesday night....
Review Source:The food is really that place's only saving grace ... if I were only reviewing the meal, Cana might have received a 4 or 5...
Always looking for great places in the area to grab a shutdown meal, we were excited to try out Caña y Cafe after grabbing a Groupon that offered two glasses of sangria, one shared app and two entrees.  That excitement turned into doubt once we saw the "B" rating posted on the window as we walked up... while I normally stick to an "A" only standard based on how drastically cleanliness drops based on grade, this time I braced the "B" (basically because we had the Groupon) and we went in.
Once we walked in, we noticed that the place looked, and was set up more like a club than a restaurant - no big deal there, many places play double service. It was obviously a slow night with only three other table seated so we asked to be seated closer to the back wall away from where two other tables were bunched together. Â Maybe that was the first mistake...
While we weren't grouped in elbow to elbow with other patrons, we did have an eating companion... the huge cockroach on the wall. Obviously, there's strike one. The waiter was good enough to remove the extra patron, but later, for some reason, indicated that he never saw a roach... strange for two reasons... 1) it was pretty big, and 2) I distinctly saw him wrap it in a napkin then wash his hands after (I was watching because I would have left if he didn't).
After the roach distraction, we were left with the opportunity to listen to the evening entertainment. The chef setting with a couple chicks in the back talking very loudly in what can only be described as a cursing only conversation. It was like they were playing a game where each would try to see who could replace the most words with a curse word and still be understood while yelling. Admittedly and interesting game that I'll have to try one day.
Anyway, the owners (I assume) showed up at some point before our desert. I assume they were the owners because the cursing game abruptly ended, the chef left his ladies at their table and everyone started treating them and their guests like royalty. My only complaint about the owners is that they never paid any of the table any attention. With only two filled tables in a restaurant you'd think they would come over and at least say thanks for stopping in or ask if we liked the food.
As I said, the food is decent (especially for the area), but I would never suggest it to anyone.
I visited Cana Y Cafe last night  for it's Tuesday Happy Hour and I can say that it was pretty good.  $.20 cent wings & $5 drinks until midnight is a great offering in NYC. The wings were crunchy & spicy along with the creamy blue cheese dip. Â
The margarita came in a plastic cup :-( but it was pretty strong! The bartender was quite attentive and kept refilling
I would definitley go there again and they have $1 tacos on Thursday & a good brunch deal also I definitely wanna check it out!
Where do I start.... I purchased a Groupon for two for this place. I've been to numerous Latin restaurants... And received amazing service. That wasn't the case at Cana y Cafe.... We arrived at 8 pm  to no one waiting.... We were told by the waitress that it will be a few mimutes.  A few turned to one hour! While waiting, three other parties showed. They seated two parties before I mentioned we were here first awaiting a table. The male waiter/ bartender smirked and said really? I never want to think that race has anything to do with the way you are treated in an establishment ..... But it did Wed. Night..., The waitress finally came and took our order, and like everyone said, the wait for your dish is almost unbearable..... Like I previously said, we got there at eight and left at 11pm..... The food was very good. I had the snapper and my friend had the salmon.... I will not be returning, nor recommending this place to any one. They need a course in restaurant management.
Review Source:Let me start by saying that I am not a picky eater. I have lived in Inwood for just over 3 months and have not had a bad meal in the area before eating here. My brother has been raving about the 20 cent wings they have here on special on Tuesdays for a while. While we didn't come for the wings, we figured the dollar tacos that they offer on Thursday nights would be just as good. Not only were the tacos bad but this may have been the worst dining experience that I have ever had. There was practically nobody else in the restaurant when we ordered. Shortly after placing our order the restaurant began to fill up. I ordered 3 tacos, an order of nachos, and a ginger ale. After waiting for about 45 minutes for our food to come out I begin to notice that people who sat down after us were already eating their food. The waitress could tell that we were getting impatient and told us our food was almost ready and it would only be 5 more minutes. An hour later, the waitress came out and told me that 1 of the tacos I had ordered is no longer available, so I picked another 1 from memory. I would have been happy with just about anything at this point. Another 20 minutes went by and no sign of our food. By this point, people who sat down 20 or 30 minutes after us had finished eating and were already leaving. To be honest, most of the food that I saw go by looked pretty good. This lead me to wonder if we had done something to inadvertently offend the cook. Even my ginger ale was wrong, as the waitress gave me a warm diet Pepsi. When I asked for ice, I was brought a glass full of it.... 30 minutes later. Long story short: the food came out. It was cold and all 3 people who ordered got something different than what they ordered. We tried to ask what was what, and the waitress had no idea. The nachos were soggy, and to prove this, I rolled one up and when I set it back on my plate, it slowly unrolled, leaving a puddle of oil below it. There was no consistency to the food quality either. My brother's tacos all came with lettuce, cheese, and salsa, while 2 of my 3 tacos we literally a piece of fish stick in a tortilla. My wife's plate had some lettuce and salsa on it, but so little that it made us wonder if it was only by accident. At this point, we were so hungry that we figured we'd just eat whatever they put in front of us and never come back. We ate some of the food, but it was bad enough that we didn't finish. We paid our bill and left. Point blank, it was disgusting, the staff was not helpful, and we left and went to the "fresh tortillas" takeout right down the street to get what we had expected to get from here. Cana y Cafe was nothing short of the worst meal I've had in over 30 years, and I've happily eaten some pretty bad food in that time.
Review Source:Tuesday - $0.20 wings with a selection of sauces with purchase of a $5 drink, minimum order 10
Thursday - $1 tacos (BBQ pulled pork - OK, chicken taco pizza - meh)
Every day from 5-7 - $4 margaritas!
Service was a little pokey - but the margs were good and strong and the tacos weren't half bad. If you're willing to pull out all the stops, try the $2 chimichurri churrasco taco :)
20 cents for wings. Figured why not. Visited this place on a Tuesday night when they had the special of 20cents for  wings. The minimum order of wings are 10. Which I could definitely understand, because I would be that person at the bar with 20cents talking about "hit me bartender".
They had $5 drinks. I got there at around 6 or 6:30 so not a lot of people as yet. Around 8:30 more people started to come in. Â I overheard that they have a $1 taco nights on thursday. Might have to get it out sometime.
I went this evening with 4 of my friends. Â First the waiter came to tell us after 2 hours that we needed to hurry up because there were other people waiting for tables when we were not done with our meal or drinks. Â Shortly after, he gave us the bill and over charged us by 3 drinks. Â We let him know and after a rude response we asked to speak with the manager. Â He also brushed us off mid conversation and left our table. He never returned to clarify the issue, and instead returned the same bill and sent the bouncer and waiter to make sure we paid. Not once did we use foul language or were we disrespectful to anyone to diserve this treatment. Â Upon leaving, I personally approached this "manager" and told him he never came back to talk to us. Â He used the informal "tu" in Spanish with me which I corrected him on since I am an adult patron and he proceeded to respond with an attitude and speak to me as if I was inebriated, telling me that he was not informal with me an then walking away and not responding to my comment. Â
Needless to say, my friends and I will no longer be returning and I will let as many people know as possible of their terrible customer service to spare them the greif and trip.
So I had purchased a Groupon and I was excited to take part in indulging in the menu on a Friday night with my date. Â Needless to say I was NOT happy. Â The only thing I enjoyed with the music, the bottled beer (not even draft), and my date. Â The appetizer was bland. Â The entrees were terrible and overly salted. Â The dessert was not enjoyable at all. Â I think they could do a better job. Â Speaking of jobs, the waitperson needs to appreciate his job and do it better as well. Â One minute he's all in my face ready to take my order. Â I told him I needed some time. Â He came back like 20 minutes later. Â The place was empty. Â Like really?
Review Source:I came here this past Tuesday because the hubby and I wanted to do happy hour after work and since I don' t hang well after drinking too much I decided the perfect time to do happy hour would be the day before 4th of July so I can get twisted lol. To my surprise we were the 1st ones in there at around 6pm. The place was completely empty besides us for about 45 mins to an hour. I found out about this place through my sis in law who always comes here. Â My hubby and I decided to take advantage of their 20 cent wings. We ordered that with some fries. Just so you know they have a 10 minimum wing order with the purchase of a $5 drink which you still can't beat that anyway because where do you go and the drinks are $5? The curly fries were ok and the first batch of wings we ordered were just ok as well. Since we were still hungry we ordered a 2nd batch and these tasted a lot better than the 1st . To be quite honest their wings and fries taste as if they were frozen and just deep fried but I guess I can't complain with the wings being so cheap. Â The waitress was new but she made the drinks pretty strong and they were good tasting as well. They have a variety of about 10 drinks for $5 and I think we sampled every one of them lol. Â We also had like 3 tequila shots and for $3 you cant go wrong. By the time we left the place at around 9pm it was packed. Â I wanted to stay for the lounge but since I was toasted already by 9pm I decided I would come back on another day to try out the lounge. I'm thinking of trying Taco Thursdays to see how that is. I mean in all honesty there is nothing special about the decor and it looks just like your average spot to hang out in the heights but the atmosphere is pretty chill with the crowd being mixed from young to older. Â I think this is definitely a spot I can get used to going from time to time for happy hour.
Review Source:Dont bring your girl here unless you want her to get eye banged by a bunch of tough guys in snapbacks who form a brigade on the dance floor, even though they arent dancing. They just stand there and try to look as rugged as possible. Its like a jail yard with last season's reggaeton playing. Oh yea this is on a Tuesday night, so I can only imagine Saturday. But I suppose its a good place to find your next baby mom, if thats what you're into.
Review Source:Had a blast here on a Saturday night for drinks and dancing. Â Had a great night! Â Someone complains about them patting you down before you enter, but so what? Â They weren't rude, and it was worth it inside. Â The music is loud but that's what we were going for. Â We danced until 2:30am and had a great time. Â Good music, STRONG drinks, fun atmosphere.
Review Source:Wow. Came here with a groupon thinking it wouldn't be that great, but the food is amazing!!! We had the choice of wine or sangria, which were both delicious and came in big glasses.
For the appetizer, we got crab stuffed plantains. They came with some kind of sweet red slaw - super delicious combo.
For dinner I got the lamb shank and my boyfriend ordered the chicken. Oh my god it was beautiful and delicious!!! Â My lamb shank was literally falling off the bone and it came with goat cheese mashed potatoes. The boyfriend's chicken was so crispy and delicious (but I liked my lamb better).
The service was incredibly professional, and the server graciously didn't make fun of us as we stuffed our faces ;)
Needless to say we will be back soon, groupon or not, this place is worth it!
Eh if you are in the mood for sangria, this isn't the place to go to. It didn't taste like sangria at all. I can't really explain it... it was too bitter, like they didn't wash the fruit and drowned it in hard alcohol. I like my sangria to be a little bit sweeter. The tacos were bland, it wasn't horrible but for a dollar you can't really complain. I'm sure after having a lot of their happy hour margaritas you can eat a ton of those. The best part was the waitress named China(?), she is very lively and helpful.
Review Source:Went here on Friday night to use a recently bought Groupon. My first and last impressions were not good thanks to our waiter, JOSUE. He was rude, amateur and unprofessional. But thankfully, he didn't ruin my experience. Although the place was empty, save for 3 other tables, I enjoyed the ambiance. The place has a nice, cool vibe to it. Loved the music they were playing, I felt like I was listening to my iPod!
Most importantly, the food was pretty good. My friend and I shared the empanada trio and they were pretty darn good. Then I had the churrasco with mashed potatoes. The mashes potatoes were just ok, served dominican style and not quite as creamy as steak calls for. The churrasco was cut into tiny pieces which isn't how its typically presented. Overall plate presentation was very nice but I wondered about the quality of the meat. My friend had a chicken dish which was just alright. The menu said all breast meat but she got a couple of drumsticks + breast (that's not cool!) It was also borderline salty.
Minus one star for poor service. What's up with places in Inwood not being able to properly process Groupon/Living Social deals?? Stop trying to tell me I can't show it to you on my app because you will LOSE!!
Minus another star for giving me a dirty/stained wine glass. Yeah, I'm that person checking all my cutlery and tableware!
I'm not sure what the criteria is for the searches, but I'm guessing that might only happen on Friday or Saturday nights.
My wife and I went in last night fairly early, the restaurant was more or less empty. The decor is nice, the place feels cozy and the seating is quite comfortable.
Right by the door they have a sort of wine rack decor item, which made it a little perplexing when they said they didn't have a wine list of any sort; just a couple of options depending on whether or not you want white or red. That being said, when our wine arrived it was good and a very large pour.
We had purchased a Living Social deal that got us an appetizer, two entrees and two desserts.
We started with a crab salad served in little cups of twice-fried plantains, which were delicious, particularly with the addition of a little tabasco (the waitress brought it, we didn't ask for it!). They were accompanied by a sort of sweet relish, our best guess was raspberry or cranberry, but despite the obfuscation of its origins it was delicious.
My wife ordered the whole red snapper and I opted for the pork osso bucco after being informed they were out of ducks. When the food arrived we both did a double-take at the snapper. It was essentially a whole fish with even more seafood piled on top of it; calimari, clams, scallops and shrimp. It was all delicious and tasted quite fresh.
The pork was delicious; nothing new flavor-wise, but if you're craving a nice savory hunk of meat you can't go wrong with it. They brought me a steak knife which I was gleeful to note was completely unnecessary; the meat fell of the bone and could easily be divided up with your common, lowly butter knife. Served on top of a bed of mashed potatoes and devoid of any other vegetable, it was a carnivore's dream.
For dessert we opted for the two actual Dominican dishes- the Tres Leches cake and Flan. I know they aren't specific to Dominican cuisine, but the other options were cheesecake and chocolate mousse, not quite as exciting.
Both were delicious, thick and rich.
Overall the experience was great, though the entree prices are high, most being above $20. It's definitely a bit more of a splurge/special occasion meal, but if you're not bothered by the price tag it's well worth it.
I went for a late dinner. Â I was asked for my ID, no problem, I understand they serve alcohol. Â They lost my business when they tried to do a full body search to buy a cup of soup. Â I can't believe they try to portray themselves as a top tier restaurant. Â Seriously? Â You have $40 dollar entrees and you want to pat me down first? Â Not a chance.
Review Source:Great food.  Probably the most varied menu in this part of town with tremendous variety and some drop-dead dishes  The cocktails are very good and at the lower end of the price range among the Inwood start-ups.
The grouper ceviche is extraordinary - essence of ocean in a martini glass. Â
The oddity here is the 15% service charge that they add to the bill - and still solicit a tip when you sign the credit card slip.
Been here twice.
- Can't believe no one has said this but they PAT YOU DOWN before you can enter!!!!! whether you're a male or female. I mean seriously what restaurant does that?
- The service takes long and they've forgot part of our order
- Came for Tuesday wing night and they tasted as if they opened up a pack of frozen chicken wings from BJs and put it in the deep fryer. They were so terrible I didn't even finish the first wing but I guess that's what you can expect 20 cents per wing
- Drinks are okay and it's popping at night
- The decor and vibe are a plus
- The restrooms are fine but very small
Definitely go on a Tuesday for the 20 cent wings and cheap drinks, but don't actually order anything else from the menu. Came here with my co workers and BF, and he chose to order from the menu and his food took forever!! And I mean long...over an hour and 15 minutes-for chicken. We ordered our wings, got them, ate them, and he still hadn't been served. And wouldn't be for a while. Had we honestly known that it was gonna take so long, he would have just stuck to wings- which on the other hand, come flying out of that kitchen almost by the bucket-fulls! We also made the mistake of ordering a pitcher of sangria rather than just sticking to the cheap drinks- $30 for what turned out to be a super small pitcher of sangria- literally the kind of vase you use to put in a single rose or something.
The wings taste like house wings. Seriously, wings that regular Spanish people make in their house taste exactly the same. They just seasoned them with adobo and fried them up. Which don't get me wrong, they're good, but you wouldn't expect restaurant food to taste like house food (defeats the purpose of eating out). The barbecue wing, though, were pretty slammin'.
Want to return, but again, next time we'll stick to strictly wings and drinks.
Cana y Café is a refreshing site to see on this block. The decor is gorgeous and very low key. Before midnight it's a great date night place then prepare yourself to party!!! It turns into a lounge and the ambiance is fantastic. The drinks and bottles have great prices. I was definitely impressed and my boyfriend and I will define come back next weekend.
Review Source:My wife and I went here for dinner last night (weeknight) and absolutely loved it. Â The decor was surprisingly chic, especially for 207th Street. Â We shared the octopus appetizer, which was very good, but we were blown away by the main courses. Â She had the pork chop, which featured a great side dish featuring malanga/yautia, of all things. Â But my chicken was the star, and I never order chicken out. Â They understand the power of crispy chicken skin and a bacon white wine sauce. Â The flan was wonderful, but they need a bigger dessert selection.
The service was great, the margaritas were great and they really, really took care of us. Â A great place that's a great addition to the neighborhood. Â We're looking forward to going back soon.
p.s. this is 5 stars for the neighborhood, not Daniel Boulud 5 stars...
I was shocked when without notice it was 4 hours later after having appetizer, drinks and dinner. Â I got their around 7-8pm it was quiet but by the time I left 12:30 am, it was packed and happening. Â The music was good spanish contemporary soft rock and then a singer came on live around 9pm and he was great. Â The food was very good. Â I had the fish and I shared it and I wish i didn't. Â The portions were small for any hispanic but delicious.....I was satisfied but could've used a few more "bocados" the appetizer was calamari but wasn't too impressed it seemed like the usual fried calamari just with some special white sauce. Â It was good don't get me wrong but I expected different. If you are a "lambon" and like large portions, Â this isn't the place for you!!! you might have to run to the "chimi" cart right around to fill up or McD's up the block. Â The dessert...can't even spell it I think it was named after that berry song....WHATTABITUSBERRY!!?? something like that I remember the name taking up the whole menu but tried it and it was very good it had real blueberries and raspberries...I hope to try more dishes here and review them....
Review Source:A new fancy restaurant/lounge addition to Inwood! How exciting!
This brand new Dominican fusion restaurant, located a couple of doors down from Guadalupe on W. 207th, just opened with intentionally no fanfare and it's so new that they didn't even have any take out menus to give when asked for. I expect this will be worked out soon. The owner's father owned a simple take-out restaurant in this spot for 30 or so years before the son took it over, renovated it for 8 months and it's born anew as a sleek hotspot boasting high end chefs that have worked with Tom Colicchio, according to the manager I spoke with.
Dinner service begins at 6 PM and after midnight it turns into a lounge blaring dance and salsa music. Since I arrived late in the evening I didn't get to sample any of the food, which according to the menu is an array of neo-Dominican fusion foods, like oxtail ravioli. Apps seemed to be in the $8 - $14 range and mains in the $15 - $25 range.
Not to harangue them on the menu, but there were only one or two non-meat and non-shellfish options, including a "market price" vegetable entree (with no additional description). While I understand that they're going for a twist on Dominican foods, is it really that hard to have perhaps one more thing vegetarians can eat? Or even fish plates *without* shrimp and chorizo? Pleeease? If you eat it though, the food and their descriptions seemed really interesting, I wish I remembered more of the menu items!
Drinks were also a twist on the usual. They did have regular mojitos, but their specialty was a blueberry/raspberry mojito combined, which was good but a little too sickly sweet. The single berry of each as a garnish was a nice touch. But uh, where were the mint leaves at the bottom? The entire glass was as clear as rum. Those were $10 each. They also have a nice wine list. Also, check out the hilarious promotional videos circa 1980 of the DR, sponsored by a rum company!! They play in a loop in the flat screen TVs above the bar.
Personally, since I can't eat most of what's on the menu I'd come back here just for drinks or a glass of wine. The space is large, with lots of booth seating so it's ideal for groups as well as hot dates. Hey, I'm all for new good restaurants!
