One of the pre-set channels on my car radio is US 99.5 which for you who do not listen to country music, is country music. You know that you're getting a little further from the Chicago loop when CMT is on a bunch of the TVs, with sound, at the bar. Which is fine by me. I was west of Sugar Grove, which is where CJ's is located, to see an old friend, was in no hurry on the way back home, and found these guys by pure serendipity. You can't sneak in because there's bells over the front door. Ron said that if you're careful you can get in without setting off the alarm. CJs is a nice comfortable long room dominated by a bar on your left, booths around the edges, and tall tables in between. The chairs at the tables match the ones at the bar, with a rough hewn look but finished. The tall tables have inverted horseshoes underneath, that I believe Ron, one of the owners, worked himself for coat hangers. Nice touch. Dark wood wainscotting gives way to a light shade of forest green walls with framed pictures, old farm implements, and a bighorn sheep head and bison head (with St. Patty's hat) among other things around the room. They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as in 7:00 A.M. to 2:00 A.M, but I just stopped in for a beer and a shot of Jameson's. $4.75 for a shot of Jameson's Gold Reserve can't be beat and you're getting a coaster made from blue jean pockets with CJs inked or stiched on 'em. Spoke with Ron for awhile and found out a little later that he and his beautiful sister Jane were the owners. Jane, along with Cheryl, a server, and Patti, the bartender are all you'd hope for as staff. The regulars that were in gave me the impression that everyone knew everyone else and this was their go-to place. Hidden gems are a God send, and if you don't live out in this neck of the woods you're probably not going to find it. That being said if you go south a couple miles down Il 47 from I 88 you'd better do yourself a favor, pull in to Cjs, and sit down for a little bit.
Review Source:I am a 'breakfast" guy. I can eat "anything".....anything for breakfast. Be it tacos, burgers, hot dogs, grilled pork chops or even an egg omelet! Calamity Janes is my "go to" place for omelets in the morning.
I have been coming here for breakfast probable twice a month for a little over a year on Sunday mornings. For $7.95 you can "create your own" 3 egg masterpiece with 4 filling choices. This creation is football shaped (not really!) and steaming hot while it is placed on the table. Your eyes roam the plate with anticipation. The smell of hash browns catches you by surprise because your too busy looking at the omelet.
It's puffy and fluffy ( I said it! ) filled with creamy cheddar, sweet tender ham with sauteed onion & tomato. Bust into this for a steamy eruption of taste & texture.
Like I said, I have been here a few times to make this evaluation. The key to a great breakfast place is obviously the food.....and consistency.
We have now been to this place twice. Â The first time we were there on a Wednesday and it took a while for our food to get out. Â However, when it did get out it was really good and worth the wait. Â We had the chicken special that was excellent, pulled pork and a burger. Â The all three received great reviews from our group. Â We returned on a Friday night and we received our food really fast. Â Two of us had the Friday fish special (perch) and both thought it was really good! Â We will not hesitate to go back again. Â The owner was on the floor both times we were there. Â She even cleared our table. Â We did not see any flies so they must have resolved that issue. Â Give this place a try as it was really good!
Review Source:My friends and I went there for the first time on a Wednesday and were thrown off that our beers were served to us in red cups but then learned about all the daily specials and Wednesday was red solo cup night.  Its nice to finally have a bar that has specials every day of the week.  I was concerned at first  because i dont care much for country music but they had a large mix of country, 90s alternative and even some dance music thrown in.  Didnt try anything off the menu but enjoyed the bar mix the provide free of cost which is really nice of them to do.  We also highly enjoyed the girl scout cookie shots they had.  The bartender was Very friendly and even the customers that came in all seemed to be nice people.
Review Source:BEST fried pickles ever! I'm not even a pickle fan so that should say something. I had to request ranch dressing with them because they do not serve them with anything. I can not remember what else I had ate that day (it has been a few months) but I know that I will be going back for the pickles. It was clean and the staff seemed friendly. Definetly worth a try!
Review Source:Ate here yesterday for dinner. We were a group of nine including four children, adds 1 to 9 years. Food was quite good, and its very kid friendly. Great prices - from $6 to $8 for a sandwich with a pickle, $1 extra for fries or homemade chips, $2 for sweet potato fries, which were tasty.
Two of us had the pulled pork sandwich which was excellent (loved the addition of the onion straws on top). My sister had the tuna melt and said it was the best one she had ever had. My husband said the burger was okay, but my dad liked the broasted chicken (the day's special). The kid portions of pasta were very generous.
Bar choices were good - they had some good seasonal choices on tap.
Service was slow at first but not because our waiter Ryan (good menu suggestions and a great sense of humor) wasn't working his butt off. More staff showed up while we were there so it wasn't as slow.
Would definitely eat there again when we are in the area.
Found this restaurant by happenstance. Â FANTASTIC! Â I was surprised that as a restaurant/bar they were super kid friendly (coloring books, tons of crayons, fun spill proof kids cups). Â The food was delightful, the staff friendly and relaxed. Â Timely service, clean, good portion sizes. Â We'll be back!!
Review Source:I thought I was really going to like this place. Â My order here was to go, but the girl taking my order was really nice! And she suggested some things for breakfast. Â Their special was a chicken breakfast burrito which came with hash browns. Â So I ordered one of those, and also tried the biscuits and gravy. Â The place is so different compared to when it was the Sunset restaurant. Â I'm not sure how the drink prices are, but they seemed to have a pretty large bar, and I always see cars in the lot at night. Â Oh, and it's nice that they are open pretty late everyday. Â I think it's like 12 or 1am everyday and 2am on weekends...or something very close to that. Â Anyways, the biscuits and gravy were decent, not the best, but pretty good. Â The chicken breakfast burrito was pretty tasty, but the hashbrowns were TASTELESS!!! So disappointed...plus you could tell they were the frozen kind, which I'm not trying to knock that, but they need to add something to it!! I would try this place again though, and see how their regular lunch/dinner items are...!
