Not to get picky here, but...........
The sign outside says "Callahans PUB".
One expects a place marked "pub" to be...well...pub like. English ales, Irish whisky.
This is a bar. Not a pub. Coming from out of town and spying it down the road, we were excited to find a pub.
I supposed it's a perfectly passable bar, but it wasn't what we were hoping for.
We were passing through town and saw this place near where we were staying for the night. Â Decided to stop in and have a few drinks after a long day on the road.
Music was from a jukebox which had an excellent playlist. Â The place wasn't packed (it was a Wednesday night), but seemed to have about dozen people who looked like they came often.
Bartender was very friendly and took drink orders quickly.
Prices were good, $4 for a pint of Fat Tire.
Smoking inside and people definitely take advantage of it, so be forewarned if this bothers you.
Oh, and the Yelp profile says "Accepts Credit Cards: Yes", but they were only taking cash when I was there. Â I'm not sure if this is a change in policy or if the machine was broken.
ok so this is a 4.5 or 5 for sure! Â absolutely no doubts about that. Â the bartenders are absolutely lovely and not afraid to toss a few back with you. Â if you're into dive's and in santa cruz, check this place out!! Â by far as good as it gets in this town (or 30 mile radius for that matter)...
Review Source:Okay, I know one of my close yelp friends is going to give me a friendly hard time for doing another update on a place that I was originally hesitant to review (per my original review, it's off the beaten path and so cool that I didn't want to spoil it), but I was there again last night and just had to do an update. Â The bartender, La Tey (not sure of spelling) is super cool...she totally rocks!!! Â Always a fun time when she works.
As so many people have asked, I actually took some pictures last night and just posted them. Â My favorite of the three is the close up of the gargoyle with Marilyn Monroe and the animal skull against the red wall. Â That one picture says it all. Â Wanted to get a shot of the bar too, but with all the patrons there, decided it might not be the wisest thing to do.
The gargoyle was still cool this time, but I was shocked to discover that its actually a halloween type soft rubber over foam. Â It had really fooled me. Â The pedestals are real though. Â Wow, I must have been drinking a lot last time! Â Regardless, I still like it a lot. Â This place is really cool, as was Pete when I asked him where the gargoyle went. Â
Great pool tables too, although the black Jack Daniel's table could use some work on it's dying bumpers.
Definitely one of my favorite bars in Santa Cruz to chill and relax.
I can't believe it took me this long to go there. It's right near my house and I do love me some dive bar. I don't know what I thought it was, but I loved it! Cool bartenders, friendly people. Locals and old timers. I didn't feel like I had to pick a cool personna to dress as before I went in. The pool table was free and there was no line. I'm sold.
Review Source:The local bar for your hard working blue collar folks. I was really impressed with the HD tv screens. If you like pool, they have 3 tables in good shape but i'm a dart player and I wish there were more than two boards but... Biker friendly but seems to cater more to the neighborhood now. Bartender on duty gave me a motor boat, yea she did!  I plan to go back  for another, and play some darts too.
