My family and I ended up at Capt Juel's by accident, actually. But it was one of those good kinds of accidents if you think accidents can be good. (Side note: how many more times can I squeeze "accidents" into this review?)
We sat indoors even though there was the option to sit on the outdoor deck. Normally I love dining al fresco but given that mosquitoes LOVE me and it was right on the water, I was not about to switch to the deck. It did, however, smell damp in the restaurant which is mostly the reason I've deducted one star.
The menu is what I expected- a mix of fried seafood platters, grilled meats and other southern favorites.
I was completely impressed with the components of my meal (coconut shrimp) as was my dad with his oysters and soft shell crabs. My mom wasn't as keen on the She-Crab soup as she found it to be a little too thick and heavy with cream for her liking. It was the first time I'd ever seen her not finish a soup. She did, however, very much like the fried green tomatoes.
The staff were courteous and were always close by to refill a drink or check to see that everything was okay. No complaints with them, really.
Also - if you're a coupon-type, they do have a coupon in those random tourist coupon books (which, let's face it - is the only reason my mother agreed to dine here as she is a coupon queen!) - so be on the look out for that.
So yeah, is it the dining destination of Myrtle Beach? Hardly. Bottom line - it's a fun spot with pretty good food.
