When I went to Isles games, we stayed at the hotel across the way, and usually for convenience, we go to Champions to get a bite to eat before the game.
There are upsides and downsides here.
Downsides first, because I like to end on a positive - prices are high....feels like you are already in the arena with the prices you pay! There is nothing super special about food here, I like standard pub fare, but I like to see places give it their own spin to make it a little different and not the same old thing all the time.
Upsides - while it may feel like you are waiting a while, if you are going in before a game, they will get you out before that game starts. Convenience of the location is a major plus, and the atmosphere. If you want to get pumped up before the Isles play, go to Champions, sit amongst other fans and enjoy the camaraderie. You'll have decent food, albeit not gourmet...but you are not here for gourmet, you are here for pub fare, and they do a solid job at that.
I was a regular visitor since I practically live at Nassau Coliseum but decided to stop going there once the prices started to skyrocket.
Well, I gave it another shot on Tuesday night and the prices are still insane ($13 for a burger?) but at least they added $5 mixed drinks. Ok they're tiny but you think you're getting a good deal.
I had a $10 Taco Salad and only ate half. My waitress somehow misheard me when I said "can we wrap this?" and placed it on the table next to me and then proceeded to place someone's tray on top of it. Uh..ooook. I'm still giving it 3 stars because the Taco Salad was good.
Anyway, it gets busy before concerts and events so beware.
This sports bar is located in the lobby of the Long Island Marriott, next to the Nassau Coliseum. Â Having been to Champions at other locations and not being too impressed, I was not expecting much. Â However, it was a Sunday, I wanted to watch the Philadelphia Eagles, I was visiting my folks in NY, and most places (including my parents' house) only had the Jets game on. Â So it was off to Champions, and I was pleasantly surprised.
The menu had your standard sports bar fare, and some of the items were a little expensive ($16 caesar salad with shrimp), but the portions were huge and the service was friendly and attentive. Â The restaurant had quite a few big screens showing different games, and many smaller televisions throughout (HD) showing any game that was available. Â It was never too loud or too crowded and definitely not uncomfortable by any means. Â Â You could basically sit anywhere to enjoy the team you wanted to watch. Â
Tip: Â Get a bucket of Yuengling - 5 bottles for $25. Â Or a different beer of your choice, of course.
