This is the place to go in Towson on Friday and Saturday nights.
Great drink prices, but keep an eye on the bartender as they fill your drink. I have ordered beers before and they fill your glass with something different. It is the only negative thing I have about this place, and it only happens late at night.
The remodel is awesome and the place has been cleaned up to look great. Unfortunately, when they rebuilt after the place burned down they got rid of the pool tables. Maybe they will bring them back one day.
Food here is above average bar food, nothing specific to recommend, but it is all pretty good stuff.
If you are looking for a bar that will let you push tables together for a large party, they are normally very flexible on it, as long as you come here in a down time.
Only been here once. It's a nice place. They have happy hour extended to 9pm on Fridays which I say it's pretty good! Also have happy hour on food.
Staff was great and fast. Can't say it was packed, cause it was summer time, but that was a good thing. Really don't want to imagine the place filled with people.
Has 2 levels and if I'm not mistaken, 3 bars.
Overall, had a wonderful time there :)
This is update on their food. It actually came a long way since it reopened. The sandwiches are huge and awesome. The potatoe chips are better than the fries, stick with them. You really can't go wrong here. Usually you can chill at the bar, eat a good dinner and take advantage of some decent drink specials. Â (This place can get a little hood late night though). The only negative is still the fact that they have happy hour food specials for $5 that give you less food, so it isn't really a deal. You just get less and what you pay for. Doesn't really make sense. The best drink specials are on Saturday night $2.50 you call it (excludes drafts and top shelf). Friendly and quick service. I usually stick to the bar, you always get served faster that way. This is my favorite bar in Towson. Recommend.
Review Source:I know... its a bar and it's bar food. Â There was really nothing that great about this place except I went on a Friday night and happy hour is extended until 9 pm. Â They have a good number of beverages on tap, which is a plus. But getting the attention of our waitress was painful... and when we actually put an order in, it took FOREVER to get the drinks and food back. Â I ordered the Maryland crab soup and Greek salad, neither were great but weren't horrible. Â The table shared the happy hour chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks - each dish was $5 as the happy hour special. Â There were THREE chicken tenders (what kind of a deal is that?!) and FIVE cheese sticks (seriously, $1 per stick?).
Review Source:I went yesterday during the happy hour. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish was heavily HEAVILY breaded and half the chips were soggy. Also, the coleslaw they provided looked as if it were drowning in mayo. I spent a lot of time debreading my fish, and attempting to find non-soggy fries.
Service was fast, but that could be because there was only 4 other people in the pub at the time.
In January of 2011, Charles Village Pub in Towson had a "structural" fire. The bar was torn down and rebuilt over the past year. The bar/pub/patio has had a "soft opening" this weekend - with a grand opening scheduled for Monday (4/23). I visited on Saturday night - and arrived at 9PM. At that time the bar was not too crowded - a 30th birthday party was taking place on the 2nd floor and there was plenty of space to walk around, get a drink at any of the 4 bars, and grab a table to sit. As learned, with any bar in Towson, when 10:30 comes around, all hell breaks lose. Around that time, half of Towson arrived - lines to get in the front door. There was no place to really peacefully sit/stand and talk on the 2nd floor, there was a fight between female patrons in the bathroom, a bar-back spilled a pitcher of beer on my arm (he did apologize several times). I suppose it just comes with the territory. The 1st floor was a little more calm - with a few tables and a less packed bar. (The "dance" area is located on the 2nd floor - lights down, etc.) If you want a chill outing - this probably isn't the place for you after 10PM. I've since gone back several times in the early evening for happy hour or a late(r) dinner. It was a better experience. The environment is great, the drink selection is good, but the food is mediocre.
Review Source:I finally made it out here for dinner and drinks last night. For months, lots of people I know have been CONSTANTLY talking about it.
"Bro, have you been to the new CVP?!" (The old one burned down in January and they recently reopened and apparently remodeled pretty hardcore.)
"Dude, CVP is sickkk. There are like 8 bars in it!" (There are 4, which is still a lot .)
My response is usually, "The real CVP is by JHU, you know, actually in Charles Village." (They are not connected as far as I know and are VERY different, but that's for another review...)
This is not my type of place, loud, large, etc. I prefer a quieter, chiller, sometimes divey-er bar. But dang bro, the new CVP is pretty sick.
Atmosphere was great. Downstairs was pretty average for a neighborhood bar. Upstairs has a spacious area for dancing on the weekends. It's supposed to be pretty bumpin. Walk a little further and you'll get to the rooftop patio. It's not huge so it still feels fairly intimate. View is of the other little shops on Penn Ave. The larger buildings in Towson dot the background. Plenty of TVs showing sports at each bar. Not too crowded by the end of happy hour (7pm), but started getting busier as the dinner crowd started moving in.
This is the new hotspot in Towson, so if you're from the area, you WILL see someone you know. It might be the goalie from your peewee lacrosse team or maybe that girl you asked out in 10th grade. This will be a positive for some and negative for others.
Happy hours has 3 dollar drafts, which is nothing to scoff at. They go up to $5 after happy hour, which is pricey, but not out of the ordinary. They had Fat Tire, Blue Moon, the Sam Adams Seasonal, Boh, Yards Love Stout, and a few others. Not bad, especially for a place where getting shwasted is generally more important than a quality brew.
Food was generally good. Avoid the $10 crab pretzel. Just some cheese and kinda flavorless crab dip over a soft pretzel. It was fine, but I bet you could find a better app on their menu.
The burgers were great! $8 for the simple hamburger, $10 for the specialties. I got the Wild West Burger (cheddar, bbq sauce, bacon onion straws, and fried jalapenos). The patty was thick, not wide. It was cooked medium, but still super juicy. Bun was great. Soft, but not fall-apart and low quality. I think it was buttered and thrown on the grill for a minute to give it some extra deliciousness. Toppings were also really good. Best part were the fried jalapeno chunks. Great breaded texture and crunch. They only added a little heat. My two buddies both got the California Burger (guac, bacon, pepper jack, and a few other things). They enjoyed it and raved about the guac.
Burgers come with old bay chips. I think they were homemade. Thick cut and tasty. $2.50 extra will get you regular or sweet potato fries instead. Sweet potato fries were good, not excellent. Good crispy outside and soft inside, but could have used a little more seasoning or a dipping sauce for more oomph. All the food, even the grubbiest of pub grub, was not overly greasy.
Our waitress was attentive and very friendly. I think she was a bit green though. She didn't mention (or know about?) Â the night's specials. Â Wasn't good with the tap list either. I assume that this will be less of a problem as CVP, and its employees, have more time under their belts.
Next time I tell my friends we should go somewhere in Fed Hill or Fells Point, they'll probably say, "But everyone we've ever met will be at CVP!" Â I'll mutter, "Duh, why do you think I suggested Fed Hill?" But in reality, I'll enjoy the good food and drink and be happy chilling on the patio. A solid 3.5 bumped up to a 4 because of the phoenix rising out the ashes story (literally) and the fact that this is not my sort of joint, but I still had a great time.
I really like the new CVP. Â It has a nice, modern, casual, clean look. Â Depending on when you go, you will get very different vibes. Â I love coming for happy hour after work during the week. Â They have great nightly specials.
Friday and Saturday after 10 it becomes a dance party college free for all. Â But the drinks are 2.50 you call 'ems... can't beat that. Â
I have been here many times and have only sat at the bar and I received excellent service. Â I can not vouch for the wait service, but I imagine it would be good.
I have had the burgers, nachos, wings, and boneless tenders; all of which were very good for bar food. Â The seared tuna appetizer was also very delicious. Â
Overall it is a good addition to the area: it has a little bit of something for everyone, the location is easy to get to, food is good for the price (I am not saying it's gourmet), the staff is helpful and attentive, and the place is clean and nice.
I moved to Towson the same day the old CVP burned down and I was so sad because I heard so many good things about so I was super excited to see they remodeled are were opening up again.
I went the 2nd day it reopened and had a BLAST! The remodel looked great, the DJ was good, the drinks were good and very reasonably priced for competing with the other bars in Towson.
The BEST part: the $5 late night menu!! Best idea ever! The food is so good and only $5. I've never had a problem ordering at the bar. Last time I was there a random girl sitting next to me said the fries looked so good and asked if she could have one.
I have to go back during the day to eat on their patio!
OMG. W.O.W. Just horrible. Not bad. Horrible place to eat. We went, ordered an appetizer (crab dip). Selection is limited and you can read between the lines, some crappy food is served. It took forever to get our drinks, then our appetizer finally arrived. You know, when I was 10 years old and we had cooking classes at school, we were whipping way better dishes than Charles Village Pub. It was darn awful. The chef came out and said that "crab is blended in there". Well, I guess if you take 50 gallons of some cheap sour cream, doze it with Old Bay, use three pounds of WalMart brand cheddar and "blend" a single crab claw from Philippines, you can say it is "blended in there". I needed a Hubble telescope to find any trace of crab in this sour pus dip, really. Yuck. Well, asked for the check, paid for the drink and bye. I am giving up on Towson food places, they are not even trying to serve decent food. Crap, and then some more crap. We gave up and went to Bertucci's. Next time will just go to baltimore city places. Come on, Baltimore county and Towson! What is wrong with you? Can I give less than one star to Charles Village Pub? I would if I could! We were walking out and I saw people coming in, I wanted to rush forward and plea, "DO NOT GO THERE!", darn, do not waste your time, if your taste buds are frozen or absent since birth, go ahead. But otherwise, go to the food cart peddler and get his food, tastes three thousand times better than anything this Charles Village has.
Review Source:I never visited the old Bar so this is based on first impressions of the newly re-built place.
I can say from first impressions alone it looked dank. Was disappointed there was no booth seating.
Our food took quite awhile to prepare but waitress service was good, refills on drinks were not a problem.
Had one of the burgers, the meat was tasteless. In a burger there should be overall flavor not just tasting the toppings and bun. Didn't really seem worth the amount of money I paid. The toppings were good though and the bun was a higher quality so the burger was not an entire wreck, but the meat should shine.
The fries were made with quality, the chips homemade, and the onion rings were big and beer battered.
So I consider this a so-so experience. The sides were nice but the star of the meal did not shine in my opinion. If this were a place serving only chips and fries it would be a better rating.
I want to give them a better rating... I REALLY do! Â What they've done with their buidling is commendable... so open and big, with lots of places to select from. Â Unfortunately my buddy and I are 0 for 2 in our lunch jaunts to the resurrected CVP in Towson. Â First try was end of the week after their reopening, so we figured they could be experiencing some growing pains and working out the kinks. Â My friend's medium-well burger came out fairly moo-ing. Â To his credit, the manager comped us for it. Â My CVPini (Fresh turkey breast with avocado, crispy bacon and muenster cheese), meanwhile, was pretty good and quite massive.
Our second visit was this past Friday. Â They weren't as packed as the previous Friday, and with another week of business under the belt we expected a better result. Â Alas, our food order got screwed up, the waitress disappeared for a long and annoying time, and we had to ask a different waitress what was up. Â We once again got to meet the manager, who explained our order was confused in the back, and the whole meal was on the house. Â The waitress stated she was in back for the extended disappearance period encouraging the kitchen to get it right... would have been better if she came back and told us, however. Â On the plus side, both of our lunches were quite good-- my pal had the Rachel and I had the Baltimore Club.
We figure we'll give the place a rest for a while and hope things straighten out, then come back and give it another try.
Charles Village Pub has opened again and it seems to be the talk of Towson these days.
The NEW CVP's renovation is modern, clean and more inviting. There are more tables in the front and back of the restaurant. The large bar is topped with granite and there is a selection of beers on tap. There is even a rooftop deck that will be great once the weather warms up.
We stopped in for lunch and the place was packed. We ended up sitting at the bar. Our orders were taken by the bartender who checked in on us and refilled our drinks. We chowed down on a cheese burger with chips dusted with old bay seasoning. The burger was juicy and tasty. We also tried the steak and barbecue chicken flatbreads. The bbq chicken won over the steak flatbread. Overall the food was good.
It looks like CVP will be a great place for lunch or dinner. It sounds like it will be more than just a watering hole with cheap drinks like it was known for in the past - and that is not a bad thing.
The place was always a welcoming and warm environment to patronize in the past. The new place has far exceeded my expectations on not only a great place to be a customer but holy cow the service was on point as per usual in the past. The same friendly faces were still there to greet everyone. The place expanded to twice the size it used to be with the addition of the huge full upstairs and ROOFTOP deck bar! Lately the food was unbelievable even during one it's soft openings! I can't wait to see the development of the kitchen as the place really takes off and starts to take full shape!
