Charlie's Brown is my favorite place to go if I want to enjoy a good meal and relax. The restaurant's ambiance is private and food is surprisingly good and in good portions. Some people go there to enjoy it as a bar or its patio or watch a sports event, but I go there to enjoy it as a good restaurant. It's not noisy nor exclusive.
Review Source:Charlie Brown's is cool.........enough said review over!!
Ok I guess I'll explain why I liked it so much. Â First off the atmosphere is great. There's no where to sit that's not a couch, and not nasty bar couches either. They were comfortable, clean, and easy to sit and eat on. Â The bookshelves that line the walls and the darkness of the space make it almost feel as if your in someone's cozy den.
Next.....liter drinks. They have 10+choices for the liter including white Russian, Bahama mama, and fuzzy navel. We chose the fuzzy navel, it wasn't too strong but it was delicious.
When you think chicken fingers you usually think breaded and fried, but Charlie Brown's has grilled chicken fingers!! Â Perfect for trying to stay semi healthy. Â The rest of the menu looked delicious too so I will definitely be back to try the veggie burger.
This place is just cool! I especially love to come here on a cold, rainy, or snowy evening and chill on the couch by the fire. The food is pretty good and so is the service. It's a great place to escape your usual hangout for a change of scenery. Even though it's a college hangout, it's still inviting to a 30-40 crowd.
Review Source:I took my wife here one night while we were in the area and we fell in love. Â Not too expensive, kinda cozy, but it is a little dark. Â The food is good, the service varies depending on the waiter (we had one that was incredibly slow one once, and a relatively quick one). Â I don't recommend this place for large groups, as it is crowded, but it's a great place for friends to meet up.
Review Source:Best wings I've ever had in the United States. Â Dipping sauce (dressing) is made on site using buttermilk (I think) and a "special formula" that our waiter didn't act like he was allowed to detail. Â As long as it's not like Eric Cartman's burgers from South Park, I think we'll all be aight.
Juicy chicken, rich wing sauce, rich ranch (or ranch-tasting) dressing. Â Cool atmosphere with all the books on the shelves and seemingly every Lexingtonian packed within to enjoy a few brewskies and chill out. Â Excellent service. Â This joint is legit!
One of my favorite little places to get a bite to eat. Â Good food and incredible atmosphere.
It doesn't seem like a bar or restaurant. Â The couches, fireplaces, stained-glass windows, eccentric coffee tables, easy chairs and walls full of books give it more of a "dad's basement" atmosphere. Â
The food is good. Â It's not unearthly or exceptional, but pretty dang good bar-type food. Â It's reasonably priced, slightly above fast food in prices, and notably above that in quality. Â The patty melt is my personal favorite. Â It's really wonderful to be able to go there in wintertime and sit by the fireplace on a couch and cuddle up with your date and have a warm meal before going back outside. Â
There is a patio out back that's decent, but I go for the ambiance inside. Â There is even an old vintage "cocktail table" style Ms. Pac Man machine in the corner, which somehow goes along with the whole place.
There is a vintage jukebox near the bar that is stocked with lots of "oldies" from the 60's and 70's that is free to use.
Service is decent, always on-the-ball with regard to keeping drinks filled and being quick about taking orders. Â
Overall, a highly recommended place for a comfortable, casual meal.
When coming in through the door, my first impression of the place was that of a "Pirates of the Caribbean" Â ride at Disneyland. The wooden walls and the dim lightning made it feel as if I would shortly be going on a ride. Sofas, a book shelf, and oldies music definitely highlighted the theme even more. Â It was a very laid back experience and I definitely give it props for that.
Taking the food into perspective, it was enjoyable at most, but the Bison Burger was very heavy. Even as I had no idea of whether the burger was made from real Bison or not, it had an overall unique taste and a feel of a  brick once it hit your stomach. Fries were hot and fresh and getting free refills is just another bonus.
Looking at the positives sides stated above, the negative was that the food was served on styrofoam plates. Granted that this generates a lot of waste, I can also see that utilizing this option would be beneficial  in that there is no worry as to if the plate had been thoroughly cleaned before eating off it. Really, for hygiene purposes.
Charlie Brown's is one of those restaurants that bases its appeal almost entirely on its atmosphere. Â It's a dark space, with books lining the walls and fireplaces blazing in wintertime. Â You can have your lunch while sitting on a comfortable couch or armchair instead of at a table if you prefer, and the service is typically quick and friendly. Â The free jukebox can be fun as well, if you're into the older music that's loaded into it.
That being said, the food ranges from average to slightly below average. Â It's your typical American menu, served complete with lots of grease and low-quality ingredients. Â The drinks (soft drinks included) are also tiny and require frequent refills.
Overall, it's an interesting place to visit if you are looking for a "different" sort of dining experience, but it's really better for a quick lunch and drink than a full dinner.
SO, I love this place. Â The atmosphere is unbeatable. Â Couches. Â Bookshelves lining the walls. Â Fireplaces. Â Darkness (and we're talking darkness beyond mood-lighting-darkness). Â
There is nothing pretentious about this place, and that includes the food. Â The veggie burger is edible at the very least, and they toast the buns which actually is a nice touch. Â But the rest of the food, including the mostly-fried selection of appetizers leaves something to be desired. Â Not that fried-food has a high standard to live up to, but they just aren't that great. Â
The fact that everything is served on paper plates unsettles me. That's a lot of waste. Â The plates could be biodegradable, but either way, there are plenty of plates available that can be used that won't end up in a a landfill somewhere and won't disrupt the low-key vibe of the place.
My favorite thing about Charlie Brown's is the jukebox. Â It just goes on without pause playing tunes from the 60s and 70s, both hits and more obscure songs. Â I've never heard a bad song played at Charlie Brown's, and there are very few places I can say that about.
You go here to drink and avoid the sun.
The place is dark and cosy, with the walls lined with books and comfy couches scattered around. It's an easy going "cheers" kinda place with a free jukebox.
The mixed drinks are pretty good and it's the only place I know that makes a good brandy Alexander. That may not be saying much as not many places make them, period.
The back patio is nice, with a lovely view of the parking lot, but it's still nice and quiet.
I love the atmosphere there. Â Hell, some of the books (and yes, they are all real) are actually interesting reads if you like old books and you used to be able to take them home with you as long as you brought a replacement.
They don't have anything healthy there and are unabashed about it. The place hasn't changes at all in the last 12 years that I know off, nor do I expect that it will, and that's okay. Â When you're good, you're good and you don't need to change.
Want to eat somewhere cozy and dark with books old chairs and firelight? I can't say that I love the type of food - what they have is good but it's not my favorite. If you like bar food and a intimate yet casual atmosphere then you should try this place out. There is also a small bar.
Review Source:I have been visiting Charlie Browns off and on for over 10 years. I have never been disappointed. My last server was a little slow but I am pretty sure she was a week over 21 and had been out late the night before. You cannot go wrong with the Cajun chicken sandwich, get it blackened and have cole slaw on the side. Good mixed drinks especially on a Friday evening on the back porch. The Sangria was not up to snuff the last time but these things happen.
Review Source:One of the earlier reviewers was on target when describing this as your grandma's basement. Â There is grandpa's old chair and tons of nostalgic pieces throughout. You are surrounded by books and drink specials.
Your meals are served on styrofoam plates. I enjoyed my Cajun chicken. Â My fries weren't hot but they were tasty.
Drinks: They serve liter mixed drinks for $10.95
Meals: Circa $8.00
Server: Attentive
Vibe: I would describe it as a mix of a college crowd mixed in with some local patrons
Note: I don't think this is part of the Charlie Brown's chain
Charlie Brown's is a bar in a library in your grandfather's basement. There's a free jukebox stocked only with music from the mid 60's to the mid 70's. Mixed drinks come in 1L milk jugs and can be enjoyed in the comfort of a sofa by the fireplace. The perfect easy-going weeknight bar. I would highly recommend the fried pepper cheese with a kentucky ale. The back patio is a great place to spend a summer night.
Review Source:Charlie Brown's is a great bar that happens to have food. There are plenty of sandwiches and fried appetizers, but don't go here expecting a nice green and leafy salad.
We went here recently with a large group after a visit to Keeneland and one of our party asked the waitress if they had a honey vinaigrette. She looked at him for a moment and said, "We serve food on styrofoam plates." He didn't get it, but everyone else did. This is bar food -- pretty good bar food -- but it's food designed to make you thirsty for more beer.
The decor is used bookstore/library meets your uncle's rec room -- plenty of couches to relax on and sit by the fire, plus there's a great patio out back.
