Just a quick note to say how much we enjoyed our recent visit to Cheapside. Easy walk from the Hilton. Relaxed environment.
The music on Saturday night (4/20) was really good. Â The food was decent even though they were really "slammed" the service was a little slow but held up. The team held it together and it looked like a successful night.
We enjoyed the vibe so much that we came back twice, once for drinks and once for a night cap both times on the patio. Ciara and Maggie were our servers and both really shined with their interaction with customers, just the right attitude.
Considering we were only in town for 4 nights on business (stretched to allow for some fun) 3 visits is really good.
You're on our list to repeat when next in town.
Thanks
This place is a great spot to go with a group. The menu has something for everyone (burgers, quesadillas, salads, fish, etc) and the outdoor patio has a fun vibe. The servers are friendly and happily split checks. I had a chicken burrito which was good, but nothing to rave about. The portions are big, which is always a plus in my book.
Review Source:The food here is pretty good. We like to come here on a Sunday to get our drink on. The mimosas are made with fresh o.j. and the food portions are huge so consider sharing with a friend or be prepared to taking half of it home with you. I would consider adding another star to this review but choose not to for the sake of their name "Cheapside". Yes, they are obviously located on Cheapside Street but geez, put a little more thought into a new name. The history of Cheapside Street is pretty ugly and should also be renamed as well. Lexington should be ashamed of keeping such an ignorant part of history alive by honoring a street by that awful name. Do your research people! Have some respect and make a change for the better.
Review Source:We sat on the top 'oasis' patio, which was a great, relaxing spot. We already had drinks from the bar since there was a little wait to be seated. Cheap well drinks $4. When we were seated, we pretty much already knew what we wanted, we went simple and just got hamburgers, I got the black bean burger. They come with chips, but i paid more for fries to see what the big deal was. Our food took forever, luckily we were with a good group of friends to help kill the time over drinks. When we got our food, I was the only one who ordered fries, everyone else just got the chips it came with, well every plate had fries and the waitress said theyd bc charged for them ..??? Okay, they didnt order fries so why would they be charged for them if you put in the order wrong to the kitchen, which she admitted. She said she had to take the plates back to the kitchen and get chips or she'd have to charge them for fries. Okay, whatever. So that was more of a wait. The food was just okay, nothing special. The price is average. Don't pay extra for the fries, not worth it. Actually, this place wasnt worth eating at bc the service is horribly slow. It's fine to drink here, but thats it.
Review Source:Within walking distance of hotel and a nice place to just hang out and have a nice conversation. Â They have a nice patio to sit at and people watch. Â We only came for drinks and for that this place was great. Â Cannot speak to food as I did not try it. Â However, there were many people there and the place was quite busy, so there must be something of value here.
Review Source:Not impressed with the food selection or the music. Â It looks like they are trying to appeal to "foodies" when they are just a bar & grill. Â My burger was underdone. Â They took it back and instead of making me a new burger I think they just put the one I had in the microwave and put it on a new bun. Â You could see where I took a bite out of it. Â We received the appetizer after our meal arrived. (???) Â We ordered the stuffed banana peppers. Â The taste was off. Â I think they need to experiment with the cheese and see if another one would work better.
I don't really care if you're goth, hipster, wiccan, whatever... Brush your hair and look presentable when you work in food service. Â If the waitress looks like she needs a bath, I'm not coming back to your restaurant. Â Be whatever you want to be on your own time.
I won't be back to this establishment.
Very happy with this place. Â I was visiting for a conference and tried this place because of the nice Oasis outdoor seating area. Â Very good choice. Â The drink selection was solid and at a reasonable price, for beer and burbons anyways. Â We started with the stuffed pretzel appetizer, which was pretty good. Â For the main course, I had steak and my girlfriend had the seasoned salmon. Â Both were a little sweet and a little spicy, but exquisite. Â I highly recommend this place, especially in the summertime.
Review Source:Cheapside was within walking distance of our hotel, the Hilton, and suited my wife and I with its laid back, casual atmosphere. We walked around downtown Lexington, but every other place was just too "uppity".
Service was great. My drinks were refilled at the perfect time, which is a big deal for me. Food arrived quickly, much to my surprise. However, my vegetables were cold. I ordered the Asian Pork Tenderloin (cooked medium) and it was awesome! When i first tasted the garlic mashed potatoes i liked them, but after a few more bites I found the garlic to be overpowering and the potatoes had a gritty, "instant" texture. The corn bread bites that came with it were so good, we ordered a second serving.
Overall, very nice. My wife and I enjoyed it well enough. We had no problem holding conversation privately while still enjoying the ambiance.
really, people? REALLY? Why you gotta dogg on Cheapside so hard!!! Comeonnnnnnnn
I salute you, dear Cheapside. I salute you for providing me with countless messy nights, awesome crowds, and warm service. Your staff appreciates me when I am not wastey, and I appreciate you when I AM wastey. Service is reliable, on time, and with a smile.. atleast that was my impression last night.
But let's get something straight.. Cheapside is no 5 star grill, but I don't really think you claim to be.  Your my  basic bar and grill, and we all know that no one really goes here to "dine". They go for a GOOD ass time, some food perhaps to go along with some boozin, and on that, my friend- you deliver!
I have come here with family and as excellent beginning point or stop along the night and will continue to do so!!!
All right, so I came on here yesterday on 12-10-2011 to look up some reviews on this restaurant that my friend, whom is graduating soon, wanted to go to. When arriving at this place, I have to say that it was much like other reviews had said. Atmosphere was great and the food was so-so.
Negatives:
-Service had taken way too long. Of course I did not feel the minutes passing by because luckily there was a Kentucky basketball game going on when we got there.
-The appetizer of the chips and spinach dip were okay, but the chips were salty as heck!
-The "Duck Enchilada" that I started out eating was great until I hit like 12 ounces of sour cream towards the end. For some reason, I kept having thoughts that this restaurant substituted sour cream for the actual amount of duck that was in the enchilada. Like put a lot of a cheap thing, just to make the enchilada seem big. Similar to how fast food places or starbucks puts a lot of ice in your ice coffee so that it looks like a lot.
Positives: Good atmosphere and friendly staff.
You know, I wasn't in this bar very long but I was in here long enough to review it. Â I was in here for about an hour or so. In that time the bartender, John, was very attentive and made sure I did not kill off a drink without asking if I was ready for another. He also gave me a sample of the 2X IPA or whatever it was that he said was "different." What he should have told me was that it was beer that smelled like marijuana, but he laughed about it when he knew I figured out that very familiar smell. When I asked about where I could find the best Kentucky Hot Brown in Lexington, he and another one of the bartenders both gave me a list of places to go to and things to try. The people here are genuinely really nice and I dig that. I didn't have anything to eat, but the menu didn't look like anything more than your standard bar bites. Next time I'm in Lexington I'll come back.
Review Source:Food: Decent... Drinks: Decent... Upstairs patio/deck: Pretty awesome... Service: Decent... Drink prices:... Decent... Nothing impressive at all really but it's a good place to get smashed and not care about acting a fool I guess. I go because it's convenient but I don't normally stay long.
Review Source:This place has really gone downhill. I was meeting a friend here, walked in looking for her, no one smiled or even said hello. She was running late so I took a seat at the bar. Bartender didn't acknowledged me for 10 mins, just as my friend was walking in the door!!!! Ordered artichoke dip and side of beans. Dip was standard, couldn't even eat beans. Waiter was young and obviously not trained properly :(
Review Source:I found this place to be just okay. Nothing great, nothing horrible. We went for a celebration and they did a great job of making room for us and allowing us to overflow and be loud, however the service was slow and we seemed to be constantly changing servers.
They had a great outdoor space, but being in Lexington there were a ton of smokers that filled the patio.
Our food was okay, nothing great, and I thought it was very overpriced. We both had entrées, so maybe their "bar food" is better for what you pay, but at $12-$15 a pop I expected more, both in serving size and in quality.
Overall I think they would have rated better if they had just been a bar, because what I found the most disappointing was food related.
I'm still not exactly sure how we ended up here for lunch on a Sunday. Driving home to IL from the east coast and wanted to drive thru downtown Lexington. We were looking for a place to let the kids run around at a local park but were cut short by the cold rain.
The mirror above the bar said "established in 1982". Oddly enough it seemed that the soundtrack of songs being played in the restaurant must have been a 1982 soundtrack tribute the whole time we were there.
I must say the downtown brown, a chicken dish, was a pleasant surprise. My wife's salad was a nice portion and was also a quality meal. The kids shared a quesadilla. So, based on our random visit, the food was a 4. The service, was kind of what I would expect given that it was 2pm on a Sunday and seemingly nothing else was open downtown. Our server, maybe a college kid, probably could have been serving our food and maybe sneaking back in the kitchen to play Playstation for 5-10 mins at a time. Kind of just disappeared for awhile from time to time. Again, no complaints. Not sure this was our first choice with a 2 and 3 yr old, but didn't really have options. The kids thought the stage in the front of the place was pretty neat. Probably a place I would have went to in college, but probably wouldn't take the kids back. Â Again, my hats off on the downtown brown chicken dish. Good eats!
Service, not so great. Not terribly clean. But damn the burger and fries were great! Nothing better than sitting on the patio upstairs, under the umbrella, while the rain falls. Best outdoor dining experience in Lexington.
Get your burger Cheapside Style, but get the raw onions instead. The blackened spice and sauce were great.
I thought they used to have entrees, but it seems like just sandwiches and salads now. But with a burger this good, and the outdoor dining this good, I'll definitely be back.
The music really adds to the experience, and the people are very friendly! Don't be surprised if the people at the next table start up a conversation.
Love the Negra Modelo!
The only good thing about this place is the multiple outdoor seating areas and chill atmosphere. That's where the positives stop.
Ordered a dinner bowl with roasted pork and rice and beans. There was pork, a lot of it just chunks of fat. There were beans. But there was very little rice. The pork was tender and cooked well, but offered little flavor. The "corn sticks" that came with it sounded good on paper, but were greasy, halfway stale, and cold. Actually, everything was cold. Not just my dinner, but everyone else's dinner as well. It came with "spicy-sweet chipotle orange sauce". It wasn't any of those things.
I give the people who wrote the menu an A+, everything sounds good but doesn't deliver. Don't waste your time on this place for food. You'll be disappointed.
This is reviewing Cheapside as strictly a lunch destination, since I haven't experienced the nightlife (which I've heard is mediocre). Â It's great for a quick carryout and if you want to dine out on the patio on a warm day, but it's always very dark inside and the service has never been that friendly. Â It's the only place in Lexington that I know of with a Monte Cristo sandwich on the menu, which made it worth it for me.
Review Source:It's a bar with a grill. I don't have anything to complain about, but nothing stood out to "wow" me in anyway. We went on a Monday and found it to be rather dead inside, which didn't bother me because the service was pretty snappy.
Also on Monday: No bands or playing and the drink special is a $4.00 Martini. Yeah, terrible Martin's on a slow day is a sure way to bring more people in.
The Reuben's and Chicken sandwiches aren't bad. I didn't care for the fries at all. You can order the sandwich without the fries for less, but you have to tell them. If not, they add it.
I went to this bar on a Friday night before the UK vs. South Carolina game. Â Not a fan of either team (I was working with ESPN for the game), we decided to find a bar downtown that did not appear to be too crowded. Â
Well, this was definitely the wrong choice (we didn't realize it until we had already paid to go in). Â It was overly crowded with what appeared to be all USC fans (as a Virginian, I have a radar for a southeastern'er). Â The deck/patio was very nice and had heated lamps. Â Drinks were the usual and nothing too special.
The reason this place only gets two stars is because of the drama that went down there that night. Â There was a creepy ghetto boy at the table next to us checking out my girlfriend when one of our crew finally said something. Â He got up threatening to beat the smack out of all of us. Â The majority of us were females. Â We asked if he would really do it, and he said yes... Â The whole bar stopped as the scene was made.
The bar finally sent a guard up to escort the ghetto boy out...but either way, we were still left with a sour taste in our mouth. Â AND...it made us wonder why no UK fans were in there. Â Perhaps they knew better...
Is more of a bar than a restaurant. But what they do have in terms of bar fare, they do well. Â Cheapside is a bar to hang out with your friends and listen to music Go for the atmosphere, the outside garden and balcony area are wonderful in the summer. Â Go early or you may not find a table. It can be a bit crowded at times.
Review Source:This was a perfectly mediocre meal at the one restaurant in Lexington that is open for dinner on a Sunday night. My fries were soggy and they were out of the first four beers I requested. The waiter was really nice, though.
The roof deck affords a nifty view of the neighborhood, and their downstairs bar is open air and has seating on the sidewalk. Five stars to the architecture and interior design teams.
I had the black bean burrito and my fiance had the BBQ sandwich. We were both impressed! It's a good place to eat when it is nice out. There is indoor and outdoor seating. We sat in an area that is technically inside but the entire top half of the wall is open to the outdoor patio area. The indoor portion near the bar has a nice atmosphere. The food was tasty and the service was great. Our food arrived quickly. Meals cost between five and ten dollars depending on what you get. I recommend trying it out...and I hear its a fun place to grab some libations as well!
Review Source:Do I have to give it even 1 star?
It is disappointing to have to criticize one of the few places that have brunch in town, but today's experience was absolutely terrible. The 6-item brunch "menu" was incredibly uninspired, and the service was the worst I have had in a long time.
After finishing our meal, and waiting 45 minutes for another drink or the check, I spoke with the manager who told me that our server wasn't "very good". She hardly apologized, and offered us an appetizer - after our meal and we had been waiting! She said she would take care of it, and removed a drink from my friend's tab, while giving me my entire bill. I handed it back to her stating I was not going to pay for it. I told her my issue was not because it was a whopping $13 bill, but the principle of such poor service and bad management not meeting my expectations.
I have never seen a manager so clueless about good customer service. I have also never seen a manager criticize her own employee. I cannot say the food was any better as my veg breakfast burrito consisted of eggs in a tortilla with diced tomato on top. Sadly, this place has gone downhill since the days of it being my preferred HH spot.
I went to this place on a summer Thursday night for drinks after dinner since it looked like the most lively place around. Â It was fun, crowded and loud, with a cool patio and several bars (3 or 4) so you get fast service on drinks. Â Also, true to the name, the drinks are really cheap, especially during their promos, like 1/2 price Wedsnesday. Â
Besides the atmosphere though, the food is pretty lame. Â My table was sticky, probably from countless syrupy sweet cocktails spilled by drunk college girls. Â The best thing I can say about the food is "mediocre."
My waitress was awesome though...when I asked her which of the beers on the menu she recommended, she said she didn't like any of the beers on the menu and brought me a Kentucky Ale aged in bourbon barrels that was top-notch.
Was in Lexington for work. Â We made a point to never eat at the same place. It was too cold to sit out in the patio area but it looked like it could be a nice place to sit in the summer.
Staff was nice and attentive. 2 of us ordered the duck enchiladas. They were ok, nothing very exciting. The duck was ground which I was not expecting for some reason. One of my friends ordered a fish disk and really liked it. I found the place to be inviting and a good place to have drinks and starters.
From my college days, I remember spending a lot of fun summer nights on the patio. Â Unfortunately, when I went recently, it was bitter cold and the patio was not open. Â I ordered the chicken hot brown (to remember my KY days), which was fabulous and a perfect, warm choice on such a cold day. Â Also, they had Bell's beer on draft - a rarity in KY. Â The visit took me back to old times!
Review Source:Cool roof deck, cool tiki torches....bad service and typical pub food. Â
My boyfriend and I took a vaca to Lexington for Labor Day and I wanted to give this restaurant a higher score based on other Yelpers scores....sadly, I cant. Â Beyond the cool patio, this place is simply average. Â If you do go to here, review your bill before paying. Â My boyfriend and I were charged for items that we didn't receive.
If you like live rolling stones bands, then this is the place for you! They supposedly have this band play here all the time who only plays rolling stone songs, which sounds really cool at first, but without having a few drinks in your system, the sounds all kind of sound the same after a few of them, since let's face it, they really aren't the rolling stones ha ha
It is a small bar, pretty well located downtown and drinks are cheap!! A jamison on the rocks and a rum and diet were about $6 or something crazy like that! Granted I live in Los Angeles, where the price in living is so insane, maybe this is normal everywhere in Lexington, but we were pretty happy with the price tag here!
The waiters and waitresses at the tables could be a little more attentive, and the food sitting on the table next to us, since yes I do stalk all people visually around me, i mean why else do you go out??? looked only so so, so I would go for a few strong, stiff and cheap drinks, listen to a couple of your fave rolling stone songs and then mosey on over to another place. But beware there is a cover here of about $3 when the band is playing, but 2 drinks and live music for $12??? pretty unbeatable
If it is warm in Lexington, one of the best spots you can go to is Cheapside. Â They have a great patio with plenty of seating. Â The place is really decent for big groups. Â They have some delicious drinks, and a pretty good menu. Â I hear the brunch is amazing.
I've spent many a birthdays, happy hours, lunches there, it's a really great spot.
I'm a fan of the buffalo zinger (chicken fingers) and the bbq chicken pizza. Â
They also do have live music some nights... so there's always something going on at this place.
