Chimy's is always a serious contender in the bar scene in LBK. Â Definitely in contention for top bar in LBK with BL. Â Always a great vibe and always a fun time. The margarita's are what they do best but you can get anything here. Â Chimy's is located in an old small house close to campus that was converted into a bar, so it tends to get cozy in a hurry. Â The food is pretty good as well and the fish tacos are worth a try. Â
They have opened three other locations across Texas and Oklahoma now but the original always seems to be the best.
Chimys gets 4 stars just for their margaritas.. Â They are great!
We visited Chimys while in Lubbock for a wedding earlier this month. The bf ordered the combo fajita nachos and I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich. The nacho order was very oversized and is a meal to share. Beer on tap was cold and reasonably priced.
Another example of revisiting college haunts and seeing the tarnish on shiny memories. (english degree at use. Thanks Tech)
It is a great place for a margarita, some nachos and a fish taco. Patio space is ideal if you can snag it.
During the game days it's a guaranteed rowdy fun time.
They make their margaritas with love and a heavy hand. Even getting the house version will make you smile and fuzzy, though I recommend going Cadillac or higher.
It isn't the greatest bar experience in the world, or even in Lubbock, but it serves a niche and will get the job done.
Just wanted to give an update on the food: green chili cheeseburger is pretty darn good, and a couple of friends also have backed me up on this. I realize no one will listen to me and everyone will blow me off, but seriously, this is definitely worth a try if you're ever here and sick of nachos.
Review Source:The thing to get at Chimy's: Â a Margarita (or 2 (anymore will put you over the top)) and the Combo Fajita Nachos, which are big enough for two people and like, $7.95. Add your toppings at the salsa bar. Don't forget the sour cream, it perfects the dish.
Margaritas are a bit pricey, but they're strong and delicious, not too sweet - well worth it. And when I say pricey, I mean Lubbock pricey where the cost of living is low. These babies could go for $10-12 in a big city. I've hear they have everclear in them, but this could be urban legend. Even if they do, it's not an offensively alcoholic tasting drink. Just pure margarita perfection. Easy now. Easy.
Other favorites include any of the quesadillas, even just a bean and cheese is good.
Cons: I'd stay away from the fish tacos. I like fish tacos, but these aren't great - at all. Â Sometimes hard to find parking. Nevermind the Greek patronage. Just enjoy, especially out on the patio or deck.
Chimy's is awesome! Â I am from california and bowhunt in texas every year. Â We stay in lubbock the first nignt of our trip before making the drive down south of sweetwater for our hunt. Â The drinks are good and cheap. Â The tacos are awesome as well. Â We always chit chat with the bartenders and end up getting free drinks the rest of the night. I love this place! Â Check it out
Review Source:I am a fan of their extremely potent, $5, plastic-cup with a straw margaritas, once a semester or so. I am not going to order a margarita at a Mexican restaurant, though in general because I am usually disappointed. These are totally killer, small, cheap, and does the job.
Crowded & often have to stand to drink your drinks, but it is fun for people-watching and going with a good crowd of kids.Small inside, decent patio. The drinks are insanely potent though. One is enough. More than one, get a driver. I can't say much about the food, although I have eaten the fish tacos.
Oh, Chimys. These margaritas will get you wasted but they taste terrible. I spent many weekends here during my time in college, as it is the quintessential college "margarita hut". It is completely filled with the greek scene, but after a few margaritas you won't even care as you shuffle along the Broadway shuffle. The food sucks, but the purpose of Chimys is to embrace college drunkenness, in which it is exemplary.
Review Source:I feel weird giving so many high reviews of Lubbock. I didn't have a great impression of the city when I lived here as a kid.
Me and some buddies from a conference I was in town for came through Chimy's on a Thursday and a Saturday night. Â There's usually a good 15 minute line because this place is so popular. It also closes at midnight for various reasons.
Drinks - jack and cokes and redbull vodkas are made really stiff. I'd say a good 3 shots of liquor topped with the "filler". Superb.
Margaritas - well-known for their variety of margaritas, but I only got the Classic because it was on special for 4 bucks. I'm not a connoisseur, but it was decent enough to me.
Vibe - it gets crowded and tough to find seats. 100% Tech students, except us of course. Everyone is so damn friendly. Again, that might just be Lubbock. Really chill, unlike a lot of the bars here in Newport.
This is probably not the best place to go for a veteran bar patron, and by that I mean anyone that's been to a bar outside of a college town. This place is the Mecca for Frats and Sororities, if there was any more neon tonight, it'd glow in the dark. But putting aside the traditional college bar atmosphere complete with drunken "OMG YOU'RE LIKE TOTALLY THE BEST! LOVE YOU," this bar fails tremendously in the drinks department. Don't come here expecting a great selection of beer, in fact, unless you want an American light beer or some cheap Mexican beer, you're out of luck. I walked up to the bar keep and asked her for a Stella or Heineken and she didn't know what either of those beers even were. What kind of bar doesn't stock Heineken? I hear their margaritas are good though.
Overall, this is a pretty standard college bar but not really the place for anyone who has a taste for good beer and wants to enjoy their drink.
not too sure about their food because my colleague and i didn't order anything, but their beer prices are amazing -- $1.50 for a cup of miller lite draft?! get out of here!!! you'll never find prices like this in new york. never. way to go, chimy's -- right across the street from the main entrance of the campus too.
Review Source:I laughed when I saw the review that "they served food too" because Chimy has the BEST margaritas in West Texas, bar none! I didn't know they served food either and I am not that impressed by their food, but I LOVE the margaritas!
The atmosphere is great too - indoor and outdoor seating. It does get very crowded quickly though during the school year.
I pretty much live at Chimys for various reasons.
When I first turned 21, I wasn't too impressed by the snobby servers, but as time went on the service seems to be decent. I can understand on Friday and Saturday nights though when this place is just out of control.
Now to the good stuff:
margaritas- (frozen or rocks.) This includes the whole list from strawberry margs to cadillacs to the porsches...
nachos- Warning: this will probably be the largest plate of nachos you will ever order in your life. I like them because they have a "make it yourself" bar where all the toppings are for all the picky folks.
tacos and burritos- DEEEE-LISH.
DP shootouts- There is a reason this smaller-than-pint size cup comes with four (count them: four) straws. If you drink this, you WILL be intoxicated.
I would recommend coming here on any afternoon or around dinner time most days. Friday and Saturday nights are crazy and you most likely won't get a table.
One of the few places I absolutely love in Lubbock.
This place has great margaritas. I like the porsche. It tastes great. The bean and cheese soft tacos are great too. Always go with the soft tacos. The tortillas are thick and you get much much more when you order. It can get crowded on gameday and on the weekends. closed sundays (sadly)
Review Source:Chimy's is one of the more popular near-campus hangouts on Broadway, across the street from Texas Tech University. By far the best reason to go is the bar. The margaritas at Chimy's are famously strong, and they're stocked with the more popular beers either on tap or in the bottle. The food's not too bad either, with the fajita nachos a high-point, and big enough to share between two people or more. A lot of people like the fish tacos, but don't expect authentic Mexican here- instead they're filled with fried "popcorn" bites of fish. Not bad, but far from the discriminating Mexican food fan's palate. The biggest reason not to go to Chimy's is sadly the clientele. It's usually populated by frat boys and sorority girls, and a lot of people like to pre-game at Chimy's before heading to the other bars on Broadway or in the Depot, so you'll have a hard time finding a table if you're there on a weekend evening. Still, a cold beer and a plate of nachos on the patio or the side deck is a good way to kill the afternoon hours when the weather is nice.
Review Source:Chimy's is the perfect place to spend an afternoon munching on some tacos and sipping margaritas.
Situated in an old house on Broadway St, Chimy's offers a great menu selection, fantastic drinks, and a fun atmosphere. Of course the college students flock to this place but there is a very mixed crowd at all hours.
Try the tacos or quesadillas, you will not be disappointed!
