China Express

While staying in Springfield last week I had a hankerin' for some Chinese food, and this place was the closest to my hotel and had decent reviews.  I don't know if the people who left those reviews have just never had good chinese food or what.

I got the steamed dumplings and general tso's chicken.  It was unpleasant.  The dumplings were soggy, and fell apart when picked up.  There was standing water in the Styrofoam container they came in.  I understand condensation, but this was ridiculous.  They lacked any flavor.  The general tso's chicken tasted like deep fried chicken nuggets that has a slightly sweet, but mainly and overly salty sauce on it.  It was bad.  It wasn't spicy at all and I kept drinking water to combat the saltiness of the food.

Save your money.  Find elsewhere if you want Chinese.

I completely agree with Elisabeth. China Express is a great thing to have semi-close to the campus and its never been a bad choice. A lot of ethnic restaurants in Springfield are sketchy but China Express has never fell below my standards.
The prices aren't the greatest but I've seen much worse for less food. The lunch specials are a great deal, its about 1/3 less than menu price and you get a ton of extras, weekdays only.
The food has always been good. There's enough in a dinner combination (dish, friend rice and egg roll for $8.10 after tax) for two moderately sized meals. The service isn't the best, the woman was on the phone while I walked in, ordered, paid, and gave me my food. But, like the other review said, the food makes up for it.

From what I can tell, the food is made to order. The menu, like and Chinese takeout, is enormous with options for everyone. If they delivered to campus and put menus out they'd make a killing.

Living in the Chicago area my whole life, I have always hated Chinese food. Going to college in Springfield however, I tried their beef and broccoli and fell in love. Though the prices are a bit high (8.50 for a large), saving up is worth it!  
Though the service is not wonderful (every response is "okay ten minute" after ordering), the food makes up for everything about this place.

Living in a town that basically shuts down at 5pm, these hours are great for some good Chinese food!
