I like been here a few times. I've ordered the vegetarian burger (was told it is a garden burger) which has always been good. I like their fries too. Seems like a lot of locals from the immediate neighborhood go here. It can get noisy with the TV's on, but that really doesn't bother me and this is a bar after all! Â I've been there with friends who really seemed to enjoy their burgers too. I think this is a great little neighborhood place. It is pretty basic inside, bar and tables on one side, more tables on the other side of a wall.
Review Source:Food here is better than average for a bar, but I would certainly consider the ambiance "divey." Â Service is average and the crowd is a bit questionable but I never felt unsafe. Â Parking lot is strange one with a speed bump that rivals Mt. Elbert. Â Screened in patio is nice for smokers.
Review Source:This is a divy bar with supposedly the best burgers in Denver. Well I am not sure about the best. Â I did enjoy mine and the fries were good. Â Smelled of Clorax. Â Not good. Â Our waitress was really working hard. Â I think she was the only waitress in the joint. Â 80.00 for 8 people including 2 kids with soft drinks was not cheap.. Â .Most of us enjoyed and the company was fun. Â I will not rush back that is for sure.
Review Source:Noticed that i had a voucher for $10 towards take-out in my Living Social account, so i figured this was the perfect opportunity to try City Pub South. Tasty burger, not the best, but good, even though they got the order a little wrong - wasn't in complain-mode since the food was free. Bartender was friendly the whole 40 seconds it took for the transaction. Definitely will try it again to see what it tastes like when i have to pay for it.
Review Source:I love hole in the walls and this bar has an awesome vibe. I've gotten the chili rellenos which were so-so not that i expected something amazing and the turkey burger is amazing. Their bluberry habanero wings are also good but be warned they are not spicy at all! Kinda bummed about that. However their one downfall is that for a dive bar I wind up spending a pretty penny everytime I go here even when i feel like I don't get much- so i've stopped going as frequently since there are bars closer to me that are cheaper. However the vibe is awesome and it's definitely become one of my favorite bars when I want to go out but want to avoid downtown.
Review Source:I lived in Capital Hill for a long time and used to frequent City Grille, and seeing that they had a sister in my new neighborhood lifted my spirits, as one usually doesn't get particularly great crafted food in a suburban neighborhood. Â I come here irregularly but I like it.
It has a true neighborhood sports bar feel to it, and there's usually some kind of special for a a home team's game. Â There's a small patio out back which I feel could be better , it's not terribly clean, a little cramped, and also doubles as the smoking section which isn't too cool, just because you can't escape it when you eat. Â The burger is the only thing I've ever had, because that's what I go there for, and the fries are tasty as well, as most other reviewers have mentioned.
There are two major differences between this place and City Grille. The first is the fact that instead of Cesar dressing on the signature burger, they use what I think is 1,000 Island? Â It's not very flavorful, but it doesn't bother me. Â The second is the service. Â It's so much better here than at the Capital Hill spot, which consistently pisses me off. Â Makes me happy that they do it right here.
Besides that, the menu and recipes seem to be the same. Â It's a good spot, and I need to come here more often.
I love this place! Their burgers are really good, and their burritos are to die for! Â I like the dark sports bar atmosphere, and the staff is really nice and very attentive. We usually go with our friends who have a baby, and they are very sweet to him and try to get him to cheer for the teams. We've never felt rushed to leave, especially during a game.
One side note: parking is a bit of a mess. Â They really should consider having it repaved and painted so it's not falling apart. Â But, there's usually spaces open or we walk over.
Although I did not sample the signature burger, I saw several other folks wolfing them down. Â They seemed to enjoy them. Â I had a beer, played some tabletop shuffle board, and then left. Â It was the middle of a Saturday afternoon, and the place was only moderately busy. Â Despite not that being the busy, it took me a while to get my beer. Â My beer was put in a glass that had come straight out of a rack from the dishwasher. Â As expected, cold beer, plus hot glass, equals a barely cool beer. Â I did not have the energy to make a big deal about this. Â But, seriously, it is pretty crappy bartending to not make the minimum effort to serve a cold beer.
As a kicker, the men's room was rather gross. Â It smelled bad, did not appear recently cleaned, and the fixtures need replacing (large chunks of porcelain are missing).
What I had? Â City Pub burger (bacon, swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing) and a side salad
Food review: Â City Pub is another place that I consider a part of my Denver burger elite. Â I don't live so close anymore but it was still a worthwhile trip here again today. Â The one thing I really like about the burger here is the patty. Â I think it's about the tastiest burger patty in town. Â Unfortunately, today it wasn't as tasty as I remember it but it was very good regardless. Actually ordered a side of salad with the burger and wasn't expecting it to be much but I ended up being surprised with the quality of what I was served. Â Overall, it was very enjoyable experience. Â It's just not as high up on my top 5 anymore. Â :-s
Service? Â No complaints. Â I mean.. it's typically always slow no matter how small the crowd but I'm always ok with that if they make it right and they most always do.
Other thoughts: Â This place brings back memories. Â I used to live a few blocks from here and this was always a good standby. Â I'm a little sad they got rid of most all their Flying Dog tap selection. Â They used to have 3-4 on tap and now they're down to one. Oh.. I do still like this place better than it's sister bar that gets all the credit... CityGrille... I think part of that is just location
Yeah it was definately good. I'm going to ignore all of the debate about it being the best burger etc (who cares, it's worth $9.95 or it isn't)
This is not a place I usually would go just because it's got a sports bar vibe which isn't my scene. However, if I am in that part of town and was craving a delicious burger and onion rings I will be back.
The ciabatta bun was fresh and the icing on the cake. I couldn't stop eating the fries and onion rings even though I was full. Our server was friendly and attentive.
Went here last week for Happy Hour with my gf's parents. Very reasonable prices and we had a couple of http://Restaurant.com certificates as well so cost was minimal for 5 people. Food was good, burgers are large in size but the right amount of meat vs bread and condiments to make it a good burger. Not "the best" as others have said but that's my opinion. Got the green chile fries and they were actually really good. Definitely worth having again.
Only downside was the service as it was a little slow. We were there around 5pm and only one other table was seated as most people were in the bar so our waitress seemed to spend more time in there than taking care of us. Overall experience was good and they have a great happy hour menu with good drink pricing too!
How many places hang a sign out claiming they have the "world's best burgers?" I have been to at least a dozen such places around Denver in the past six months. Well I have visited another and in my opinion City Pub has a darn good burger, not the "best," but certainly better than any drive thru place. Get the 411 at their website http://www.citygrille.co… Â
The City Grille Burger at $9.95 is a delicious creation with a half pound of good quality beef, Swiss cheese, bacon, and a zesty sauce all piled up on a fresh ciabatta bun. Â I must confess, I still added mustard & ketchup at the table, but really enjoyed it. Â The burger came with thin French fries that were hot, crispy, and salty just the way I like them.
City Pub is a dive-y neighborhood bar with an olde world flare. Â The service is not really very good. Â One guy, with a dry personality, covering the entire restaurant on a busy Saturday at Noon. Â He was not goofing off but we got our drinks and food than we were kinda on our own.
I'll put it this way, we live over 10 miles away and although I'm a fan of the food the scene and service are not special enough to make it worth a trip out of my way. Â One final comment, comparing City Pub to the $4.50 burgers at Freddy's, 5 guys, or Steak & Shake is like comparing apples & oranges.
I like this place. Great jukebox and great burger. Service varies - it's been great sometimes and other times the waitress just totally forgot about us and I had to go find her to pay our tab - almost just left. Â But if you want to just hang out, have some drinks and play some good tunes on the jukebox - it's a cool place.
Review Source:Although I reserve my vote for best burger in Denver for another establishment, it was a pretty tasty burger. It was slightly overcooked for medium (was more like medium-well), but was still very flavorful. The sauce on the City Pub Burger was kind of like a chipotle mayo - nice little addition. The bun was a fantastic ciabatta bread that was nice and soft on the inside. Honestly, that took a solid burger and made it very tasty. The fries were also very good - nothing special, but just right.
The beer selection was a little weak, although they have a stellar selection of Flying Dog beer, including one on special each day for $3.25! The service was fantastic. The bartender certainly knew how to work a bar. I must have been the only newbie there, because she pretty much knew everyone's name. She even the birthday of the guy next to me.
Although not the best in Denver, they do a tasty burger. I'd say 3.5 stars on the burger, but gets bumped up to 4 for the service and dive-y atmosphere. If you live nearby, this place could easily be made into your neighborhood bar, whether you've got slacks and a tie on or a WWE t-shirt and Bud Light cap.
Had a blast here playing bingo on a Wed. night!
Staff was OK- The first gal we had was spot on, the shift change interupted that service.
The french fries were good, and also tried the egg roll apps, they were yummy!
Got to taste the green chili and it was darn good, and spicy!
We had so much fun, we didn't realize how many shots/drinks we had until we got our bill- word of advice, if you like shots- make sure you get whatever they have on special- hahha! It was nice place to celebrate and hang out with friends!
Deffy will be going back for Bingo!
Get some quality T.V.'s already, because there is this thing called HD! Â Top-notch burgers and I am sucker for their Blueberry habanero wings. Â They have a dog of the day beer which is not bad when you feel like actually tasting a beer. Â The wait-staff may have seen better days and they are usually hit or miss... But, in true candor, the t.v's suck something fierce. Â It is a local haunt for me, and I wish I could say more good about it...
Review Source:Love, love, love this place.
The other night I ate there with a fever and seated right next to 15 high school students - still loved it.
It's a bit of a dive. Okay, it's just a straight up dive. But, in true dive fashion, there are some serious eats here. The burgers are awesome of course, that's what they are known for but the best thing on the menu is the chili cheese fries. OMG - a little spicy, a lot cheesy, the fries aren't soggy and wimpy - they're the best. Good beer selection too.
Used a weekly plus deal to try out what I had been hearing for years was the "best burger" in Denver. Â Totally do NOT agree. Â Take me to 5 Guys any day instead. Â There was nothing wrong with the burger itself, but it was totally not worth a special trip.
The atmosphere was rowdy. Â Not a big deal in a bar. Â But don't bill yourself as kid/family friendly on your own website if you're not. Â Having crayons and a kids menu in and of itself doesn't make you kid friendly.
I realize this was probably an isolated incident, but the table behind us got into it with the table behind them, loads of yelling and cursing, to the point the manager had to step in twice to break up the almost fight. Â Not expecting that at 7pm on a Weds night, not much fun for my kids- or me.
Our service was nearly non-existent. Â Â The same manager who was breaking up the fight ended up having to take our orders after reassuring us several times that a waiter would get to us "soon". Â He eventually made it in time to deliver the food, which also took way longer than seemed necessary for 2 burgers, chicken tenders, and mac n cheese. Â The food was fine, but nothing special.
When we finally were able to pay the bill, we did get an apology for the lousy service...but it was too little too late. Â Between bad service, too long a wait for food, and the near brawl next to us, we won't be giving them another chance.
It seemed like a perfectly fine place, maybe they were just having one off night? Â Hence 2 stars instead of the one my gut wants to give them.
We met some friends there for a casual bite to eat and some drinks. Like a fool, I forgot my ID. Yeah, I switched purses and wasn't thinking because I'm over FORTY, and my husband was driving. The waitress carded us and I explained my dilemma and she was nice and said to just show her anything so I showed her my business card. She then served us (you know, because I'm over FORTY and unfortunately, she could tell). We ordered burgers because we've had them before and they were really great. They were overcooked and dry. The lettuce/tomato/onion looked and tasted like it had been under the heat lamp since Paula Abdul quit American Idol. The bun was hard and dry, much like a dried up sponge. After I ate half of it (because I was starving) I couldn't get any more of it down.
While I was in the bathroom, my friend went directly to the bar to order drinks for us. Â The bartender (who had been serving me the whole time, via the waitress) asked my friend for an ID for each drink she was purchasing. Â It came out that I didn't have my ID, so I was cut off from drinking in the place I had been drinking all night (?) I haven't worked in a bar in 20+ years and I know things have changed, but COME ON. Â It wasn't if the place was slammed. Â She knew we had been there, we were seated virtually right in front of the bar.
We used to love this place, and I was embarrassed that I recommended the Sahara Dessert Burger, I mean the City Pub Burger. Â Bring your ID, you will be very thirsty after that burger.
Good service, mediocre-rific burgers.
I went here with a friend when Westword named them the best burger place in Denver years ago.
Wat? Â No special topping, or special sauce, it's just the same sort of burger you may cook for yourself at home. Â I'd rather kick it to Fatburger, or 5 Guys than here.
Though, service was quick and friendly.
Another of Denver's "dive bar" gems.
The inside is dark but inviting with an "Old World Pub" sort of feel.
Kinda weird to locate on your first trip- as you have to turn into a Wendy's parking lot and sort of just keep driving behind the buildings facing the street.
I met some friends for karaoke at City Pub this past Saturday night. Not too crowded - which is great if you want to sing -- and maybe not so cool if you own the joint.
The barstaff took a minute to warm up- but being that it was about 11pm on a Saturday night- oddly they had a few tables who were finishing up from food service. Unfortunately I was hungry and the kitchen had just closed.
No worries-- the rest of the night was a blast. Cheap drinks ($2.50 beers) and a raucous group of singer/ dancers made for a fun time.
Although it is very much out of my neighborhood- I'd like to take a drive a little earlier next time and review some menu options.
Just went here to try a burger based on other people's reviews and I'm very glad that I did.
My husband and I split the City Pub burger (swiss cheese and bacon). Â We took the bacon off and ate it on the side. Â Honestly, the burger didn't need anything but a little ketchup. Â We got the "special sauce" on the side. Â I think it would have ruined the burger personally. Â I know something is good when I'm thinking about how I want to order it the next time. Â I will get extra cheddar and that's it!
As far as this being the best burger in Denver? Â I can say that I bet there is a better burger out there. Â That being said, I live about 5 minutes away from this place and definitely will be back for more.
Also, I didn't get our server's name, but she was great. Â She also mentioned that if we plan on coming back, we may want to go to their website and register. Â We will get free coupons, special offers and some other stuff. Â I'm sure they didn't pay her any more to say this, but what a great salesperson.
Definitely satisfied my burger craving:)
We live close by and bought a couple groupons. Â All three dinners were fantastic! great easy going pub with a pool table and more tvs then i could focus on! Â the burgers are great-fries up to par and the green chili is as super fabulous as everyone says-it is creamy and not once was it heated thru so maybe ask them to nuke it a bit more but delish nonetheless. Â If you are looking for a decent burger-beer-and game place on the south side of town-then this is the place! (note i brought my 10 and 3 yr olds and they were fine--but go early with kids as i would think it getrs pretty drunk tanky after 9!)
Review Source:Went and had a buffalo burger there tonight. Â Specifically asked for "not pink on the inside and not a hockey puck on the outside". Â Guess what?
Pink on the inside and a harsh grilled taste on the outside. Â Left a unpleasant taste in my mouth for hours. Â The side salad was good the waitress/bartender was wonderful. Â Won't be back. Â $15 for a burger and a beer during happy hour, there are many better burgers and much better deals out there.
Had a groupon so gave it a try. 1st time, probably the last time I'll go. The food was "ok", the burger was decent, nowhere near "Denver's Best". MAYBE in the top 10 somewhere, MAYBE. Also got a chicago dog which came plain (which chicago dogs are not). Was asked if I wanted the "hot dog" tray which is the condiments, so I said absolutely. Well, the condiments tray was chock full of VERY dry (and old?) ingredients. Looks like it had been sitting in a fridge for a few days. Prices are kinda high to for the quality of the food. All in all, my advice is, unless you have a REALLY good deal such as a 1/2 off or better coupon, Â pass.
Review Source:Love the $3.25 Flying Dog drafts (dog of the day) and by far the best green chili i had ever ate. It is so good, that I dare to say they probably killed someone for the recipe! It will definitely give your taste buds a boner (if your into spicy food that is)!
The decor.......kind like it! Its dark, dingy, and the place looks like it hasn't changed since the 70's! Much like its bar regulars! Its a vortex of two worlds. One side is a hole in the wall BAR while the other side is a low lit dining room for guest who prefer not to mingle with the sometimes shady characters!
Bartenders are friendly, chili is awesome, and the beer is cold! Not much in life is better than that!
Bumping you up a star, City Pub! We drove all the way down from West Arvada just to have a burger today. And it was one of the best, if not THE best, burger I have ever had.
I ordered the Steakburger, medium rare, with all the toppings. It was tasty, moist, juicy, cooked perfectly (if a little rare....and do you know how hard it is to find a place that will do that?!?!). Hubs ordered the Pub Burger with cheese and bacon and he loved it too.
I learned that my memory failed me....this 1/2 lb burger was certainly not thin, as I said in my earlier review. It was probably about 3/4 inch thick and piled high with toppings, I could barely get my mouth around it.
Best $9 I've spent in recent memory. Absolutely will return- I just wish it were closer to my house!
The burger is surprisingly good. Â I don't much care for the place itself (just not my style) but the burger is surpisingly good. Â I think it's quality meat and cooked just right (med or med-rare).
I've had the City Burger a couple times and it is big and tasty. Â If the fries it came with were geese, there would be two gaggles-worth. Â At $10 it's not cheap, but I think it's worth it.
I haven't tried other foods (how do you read the "best in Denver" sign and not try the burger?) but may get to them sometime. Â Until then, it's the little place I keep forgetting about, but will return to when I remember.
I must echo some of the comments about service - don't go there in a hurry. Â I found the servers friendly, just not speedy.
I am not sure what has happened over the last few years to this place. It seems like they have less and less help every time I go, no matter how busy they are. The City Pub Burger is still great, but I keep going back because I keep getting coupons. Be prepared to wait a while. I made the mistake of going at lunch and only had an hour, I had to take the food with me.
Review Source:First off, it's not the best burger in Denver. Â It's a good burger, but it's definitely not the best burger in Denver.
It's much smaller than I thought, pricier than I thought, and not as fun as I thought. Â Granted I went in on a Sunday early in the afternoon to watch NASCAR so almost no one was there, but it was just sort of "meh." Â It has the feel that it could be an awesome dive bar, but I'll have to go back again on like a Thursday night or something to try that out (and I'm planning on it!)
The staff was very helpful with making sure we could get the race on the big screen. Â A very important nugget: they have Sounddog Speakers, the little speakers you take to your table to make sure you can have the audio to the particular tv you want. So if you're far away from the Patriots game on tv, but the bar sound is on the Donkeys, you can bring your little speaker with you to your table and still not miss the game you want to hear.
The server seemed almost a little surly, but stopped short of being downright rude. She was reasonably fast, but didn't feel inclined to answer any questions or...well, smile. Â
Other than that, it was spectacularly average. I do plan on going back for trivia or something like that, so I'll be sure to update my review then!
But for now, a regular three stars for good food, okay service, and an interesting feel in an empty pub.
While I'm dogging on disappointing burger joints...might as well file this one too...DISCLAIMER: this was a visit in winter of 2006...they may have improved their trappings/cleanliness since then...I sincerely hope so.
I had to check out the place that touted itself to be the possessor of "Denver's Best Burger". Â It was December, cold outside and I just wanted to get some good food and go home with it. Â It was about 5:30 in the evening. Â The place was half-empty, and honestly? Â It *stank*. Â The atmosphere in the area with the open wood floor smelled of spilt beer, cig smoke and some smell I couldn't identify but very likely was the remnants of someone's puke. Â I was waited on, if you can call it that, by a gum-snapping waitress who never offered me a place to sit, took my order and delivered it to the counter and then went back to gossiping with her fellow wait staff. Â I slowly meandered around the place, trying to absorb and sample the atmosphere there...without actually breathing it in, if you catch my drift. Â The area over by the bar was dimly lit and looked to be housing a real-life equivalent of the denizens of "Moe's Bar" in the older Simpson episodes -- not the kind that have a zest for life and love great tasting beer, but the kind who nurse a mug for hours and hunch over it and look depressed and mumble -- and indeed, that's what it looked like. Â Really not too much to look at decor-wise inside. Â I ended up staying in a back area as time went on as the smoke density increased inside the place. Â Finally bugged my waitress at the 30 minute mark and inquired where my order was, because the place wasn't overly busy and people were being served, yet I was still waiting for a simple burger and fries order. Â Finally got it and bolted out of there, not a moment too soon.
To be fair, the burger was a pretty solid burger and I got a huuuge pickle wedge with it, so that's the only reason this dive -- and that day in 2007, it *was* a dive -- gets 2 stars. Â Was extremely disappointed and never came back.
So, you're probably thinking I really dogged this place and from the average votes here, I'm way off base. Â Well, I don't believe I am -- I believe *if* they are the 4-star average place that's listed here, then either they cleaned up their act or I hit them on an extreme example of an "off day", but if the food hadn't been fairly decent, I'd have no hesitation sticking this place with a 1 star rating. Â Â And I do allow for things, like if a place is super busy and I have to wait a bit for a waitperson...that's not a problem,. Â People are human. Â But that wasn't the case when I was there....my opinion was a combination of disappointment and disgust.
Citypub 30 Broncos 10.
It's the coldest day of the year, so far. I had just finished a workout & food shopping, and realized the Broncos are playing, and I was famished. Headed over to Citypub for a burger to tide me through afternoon into the evening.
Citypub is a step above hallowed dive-bar status, in a good way. It's a no nonsense bar with top-notch food. I used to visit this place for lunch when it was the Toby Jug, grooving on the burritos. The space has two sections; a bar with two pool tables, a shuffleboard game, and a couple of dart boards. The second section is seating for dining. Lot's of television screens for all the NFL games complete the package.
The place is known for its burgers, and it did not disappoint. My cheddar steakburger (1/2 pound!) was cooked medium, with just the right char, juicy not dry. The burger arrives on a ciabatta bun, accompanied by pickles, tomato, lettuce & red onion. My side was fries, crispy with the right amount of salt. A Coors light draft completed the scene.
Didn't think I could finish off the burger, but somehow I did. No dinner or dessert tonight! Too bad the Broncos didn't live up to my meal! Oh yeah, in the market for a $10 burger, Citypub sets the standard.
Citypub's burgers and fries are among the best in Denver. Â We usually go once a month, just for the burgers, and they never disappoint. Â Besides their award winning burgers, they don't offer much else on their menu. Â There are some Mexican entrees, salads, sandwiches, appetizers, and a small variety of "Grille Favorites".
I really like the atmosphere at Citypub. Â Exposed brick, wood floors, and a nice patio that is heated during cooler weather. Â No matter what time or day we visit, they're always busy. Â It's a great place to catch a game on one of their many TVs. Â They don't have HD TVs in the bar yet, which is one of the few things they could improve on.
We usually sit at the bar, and we typically get good service there. Â The service can sometimes be slow if you're at a table. Â Their website is worth checking out. Â It lists their nightly specials and has a sample menu. Â One more thing: Citypub has always offered 2 for 1entree coupons on http://pocketcoupons.com, which is a great deal! Â Check it out!
City Pub South has the best burgers in town hands down. Â Their steak burgers have won award after award and are a must on your next visit. Â Next to the burgers their enchiladas are fantastic and the generous portion will be sure to fill you to the gills.
From the outside CPS is nothing special, but inside the split dining area accommodates those who want to sit and dine in front of a huge big screen. Â Peppered t.v.'s for those interested in catching alternate games are within viewing distance and the place is a blast for Av's games.
On the bar side the pub offers shuffleboard along with a plethora of t.v.'s for your viewing pleasure. Â CPS offers most all of the sports viewing packages including MLB, NFL and NHL.
A great spot for lunch or dinner with nightly specials and cheap drinks. Â Bartenders are a riot and offer no frills service without the DTC attitude.
Check it out for something a little different away from the shoulder to shoulder pub's of DTC.
