I ordered one of those meals that was out of my comfort zone and failed. Â I ordered the Portabella Mushroom burger and didn't like it at all. Â The beers were good and we had some apps that were good. Â I like the deck upstairs and we have friends that are regulars. Â We will be back!
Review Source:The Coach House, a quaint, little house is warm and inviting on a cold-winter's evening. Â The service is sufficient and our waitress was attentive and polite.
The food was hit and miss however. Â Upon seeing a wedge salad on the menu, I immediately ordered it as it's my all-time favorite salad. Â It is supposed to be a crisp wedge of iceberg lettuce, with bacon, sometimes a bit of tomato and bleu cheese dressing. Â The dressing should be the star. Â Finer establishments use Maytag bleu cheese, the king of bleu cheese. Â Meh...not even close. Â They used watery, no flavor cheap bleu cheese similar to that used at a salad bar. Â It fact, the dressing was inferior to those used at salad bars.
My steak oscar was spot on, however. Â It was cooked perfectly and extremely tender as a filet should be. Â The bernaise sauce was delicious and the chunks of lobster were wonderful. Â The asparagus was large and woody; but, that's what you get with ordering asparagus off-season as it's a spring vegetable.
My dining companions did complain about belly upset because of their salad dressing which leads me to believe that the restaurant uses inferior salad dressings, in general. Â This is a shame because it's not difficult to prepare fresh salad dressing or at least invest in a higher-quality purchased variety.
I might return here; but, maybe not. Â A three-star review is just that: not bad but not spectacular either.
Ever since the new deck opened, the Coach Stop Tavern has been reduced to a wannabe sports bar on weekends. I've never seen it so crowded full of rude and impatient clientele. The staff has been taking it on the chin and working very hard to keep up with the new demands.
Sadly, their hardest working bartender was fired due to a customer complaint. I have to question the wisdom of letting a hardworking bartender go who brings in tons of business and handles it professionally.
I wonder if anyone considers that for every petty customer complaint there are 10 other customers who leave happy and look forward to coming back for more first class service.
It seems that the best days of the Coach Stop may soon be a thing of the past ...
have wanted to stop here for many years, back when it was the homestead, it is a lovely place....stopped finally for lunch recently....not too busy, serving in just the front porch room, place is very attractive and has wonderfully worn old pine board floors...service was pleasant....martini was served in the smallest martini glass i have ever seen, they did serve the actual drink in a mini carafe, but it was a small drink.....no draft beers....i had a burger that looked great but was ordered rare and served as something almost medium, i ate it (well half) and it was good but would have been probably excellent if cooked as ordered, wife had the haddock florentine special which she thought was very good but too bland for me.....lovely place..would have liked a better bar and food cooked as requested
Review Source:I'm not sure why the reviews are so terrible, I had a great meal and even better service at the Coach Stop a couple weeks ago.
We stopped in for my Mom's birthday lunch. Â The service was excellent. Â I had a salad with salmon and it was tasty. Â Everyone else at the table enjoyed their meals. Â
At the end of the meal, a piece of chocolate birthday cake with a candle was brought out for my mom. Â We never told our waitress that it was my mom's birthday. We asked our server how she knew and she said she overheard our conversation so she brought out a piece of cake. Â It was such a treat! Â :)
Went there on an Wednesday evening. No wait. Ordered a bottle of red. For and app we decided on the butter nut squash ravioli. Which was nice and tasted just like fall. I prefer the steak au puivre. Which was amazing highly recommend that and any of their other steaks. Can't wait to get back soon
Review Source:Awful. Â WHY is this place so packed? Â The salad was almost frozen it was so cold--boring iceberg lettuce and flavorless overchilled cherry tomatoes. Â (Hint--don't refrigerate your tomatoes if you want to taste them.) Â My raviolis were covered with bland mushy vegetables and a watery flavorless broth. Â Why are they afraid of herbs and spices? Â The worst meal out in a long time--and not cheap. Â My three companions all commented on the lack of flavor. Â A beautiful old house but not a place for dinner.
Review Source:Let's break this down easy:
1 star for atmosphere as it is a huge and quite pretty old house
1 star for the hostess and manager on that night as they were quite friendly.
I wanted to like this place more as there isn't much for great eats in Derry/Londonderry-I really did! However 2 stars sums this place up for food that was over priced for what it is as "Meh. I've experienced better" says it all. Dinner for 2 came with an $80 bill at the end for food the was just okay. Maybe if I go there again, next time with the rest of the seniors of rockingham county for early bird specials, this won't be so much of an issue. In fact I would recommend the same for anyone looking to try.
I live in the neighborhood and I WANT to like this place, but I just can't get turned on about the food. Â Maybe because I'm a New Yorker by origin, but to me this style is just blah, traditional, boring New England, and it's not even done that well.
Yes, the setting is lovely and the service is good. Â My wedding rehearsal dinner was a pleasure there years ago. Â But I could make the food of the same quality with frozen entrees, prepared salads, and bottled salad dressings.
The Homestead Restaurant is now The Coach Stop Restaurant & Tavern, located at the corner of Mammoth Road (Route 128) and Route 102 in the old blue colonial house (constructed 200 years ago) with 12 rooms and nine fireplaces. The Homestead Restaurant of Londonderry was owned by 4 brothers in the McDonough family (also own Fratellos (several locations) & The Homestead in Bristol). The Homestead Restaurant will be reopening in the former Silo's Steakhouse in Merrimack later this year, which should be a major improvement to its predecessor.
The Coach Stop is not affiliated with Fratellos and is now owned by 1 brother (Steve) offering the same/similar menu & food offerings (lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch) at moderate prices (most prices now rounded to the dollar), same atmosphere, and same specials including Monday & Tuesday Dinner For 2 ($29.99), Wednesday Prime Rib ($13.99), Thursday Wine & Dine, and Friday Fish Fry Night ($12.99). Desserts are made by Frederick's Pastries.
The Fratellos/The Homestead Inner Circle Rewards Card can no longer accrue points, but I was told the value on the card could still be redeemed here. The Coach Stop now offers a Loyalty Card with $10 applied on the card (use next visit) for joining and for every $250 spent, you get a $50 gift card, double the value of the previous program.
I dined at The Homestead quite a bit since the food was consistently very good on each visit. I love Fish Fry Night on Fridays! Each year, I received a postcard for a free birthday dinner.
Anyways, I stopped here for dinner, but I decided to eat in the upstairs lounge since there was a musician performing (singing lots of Elton John). The lounge is cozy with a bar and several tables and flatscreen TVs. There's also self serve cheese and crackers plus the tomato/cottage cheese spread, very similar to The Common Man.
The waitress (Tiff) greeted me as I took a seat and offered a drink and went over the specials and answered my questions for this review. Â I ordered the Baked Stuffed Chicken ($13) which I did have a while back at The Homestead and the entree included choice of starch, vegetable of the day, salad, and a basket of rolls & sweet bread.
The salad had a good mix of greens with a very creamy bleu cheese dressing (my choice). The sweet bread rocks! The portion of food was very generous. The baked stuffed chicken was boneless chicken stuffed with a cranberry bread stuffing and smothered with chicken gravy. The mashed potatoes were soft with chunks and very good. The bowl of butternut squash was pureed with some small chunks, just the way I like it. I could not finish the food and needed a to go box. That entree was lighter fare too?
Overall, I had a very good dinner with friendly and attentive service. The musician was pretty good too. The great food served at The Coach Stop is definitely the same as The Homestead!
