Great atmosphere. Â Dark lighting made even darker with the dark wood of the walls and furniture. Â I went here with my family for my birthday. Â It was not my first choice but it was not a bad one. Â
We were confused when we came in as there was no seating instructions or greeter, but we made our way to the dining area and was told to head on into the back. Â I got a draft Budweiser which was fresh and an order of onion rings for the group. Â They were homemade and tasty and plentiful. Â
For an entree I ordered one of the specials, bourbon turkey tips. Â They came on a bed of rice pilaf and coleslaw. Â The rice was regular rice pilaf nothing special. Â The coleslaw was good. Â I even ate my sisters coleslaw as does not like it. Â The turkey tips were very good. Â I wish there was more sauce so I could have spiced up the rice a bit, but no.
I could see myself here again for a pint and some food.
Good food, cozy atmosphere, but service was too slow. We were there for dinner on a Wednesday night and experienced great delays with all aspects of the service. The regulars who were sitting next to us, however, were taken care of just as promptly as one should expect.
Food was both tasty and plentiful. We had simple dishes that are sure to please and leave enough for lunch the next day. Too bad they had ran out of my favorite vegetable side dish, butternut squash. It's a small kitchen, so the menu warns to expect delays.
The place looks like what you'd expect of a small town bar. Dark and cozy, with tables laid out near enough that you could participate in multiple conversations if you felt like it. Decor was cute and very in keeping with the general theme. Large enough TVs for the guys to stay abreast of all game happenings.
We might come back... on a day we're not feeling like being too pampered...
When I travel, I go out of my way to avoid franchises and try new places.
I have to admit, I wasn't quite sure about going into such a nondescript sleeper of a restaurant tucked into a hard-to-find neighborhood. Â Once I got inside though, it was such a nice surprise. Â For me, it was a really nice mix of a local pub with good food and a friendly, neighborly atmosphere.
I ordered a French Dip, which had juicy roast beef and a nice toasted roll. Wasn't too wild about the onion rings, but whatever. Â My one and only complaint ( and it's minor ) was that I didn't get ketchup for the rings and nobody really checked up on me. Â ( To be fair, the waitresses were really hustling, not slacking around and ignoring me. )
Overall, I like it. Â Great non-franchise place for a stranger to stop by and have a regular meal for a regular price.
PS: Â They have six or eight beers on tap. Â I got a nice pint of Bass, so that's enough to keep me happy.
Strange place for a restaurant - in a residential neighborhood. But, plenty of parking in the back. Ate there several times and was very impressed with the quality and quantity of the food. Nice to have a place like this in our town! This and the Peony Gourmet Chinese restaurant are our two new favorites in Norwood. Hope they both are around for a long time!
Review Source:Found this place randomly via Yelp and went there with the girlfriend randomly for dinner on a nice but brisk late Autumn evening. Upon arriving at what seemed to be a barn, driving closer, it was in fact a... you guessed it... old colonial house which has since been converted into a restaurant and bar. The atmosphere there is unlike anything I've experienced but represents New England; it's absolutely authentic and spot on. From the little stove in the dining room to the tiny bathroom featuring old pluming and all of the wooden seats that creak with when you sit down. We totally and immediately felt like we time traveled and that my friends is awesome.
Unfortunately though, despite the affordable menu and friendly service, the food was rather dissapointing. The spinach dip was average at best, being served with some near stale chips. The girlfriend didn't like her entree (I can't quite recall what she had) but my plate of spaghetti with meatballs surprisingly decent and the portion was more than generous.
As far as drinks go, they nailed her cosmo and my beer was cold - both were decently priced which was great. All in all, the place, while full of locals, makes for a very unique setting to eat or drink at - it has its charm and we thought it was a neat spot. The food could have been better but the ambiance and the service made up for it. And while those booths weren't as comfortable as one would expect, the authenticity was something that I enjoyed and it made for a fun night out.
Whenever we travel, we make it a point to ask a local (usually a police officer, since who knows the area better?) where the best 'local' place is to eat. In this case, I AM the local and this is my choice for best local 'flavor'. First of all, when I walk in I feel like they should be playing the theme from 'Cheers' and Norm should be sitting at the bar. For the local residents, you just know that you are going to run into someone you know and for the not so local it's very easy to get caught up in the jovial camraderie that flows through the restaurant. The waitstaff is cordial and busy but never hurried...you can spend as much or as little time dining as you wish. The food is flavorful, plentiful, and inexpensive, which is a tough combination to beat. The Colonial House is located on a side street in a residential neighborhood with no sign announcing its presence. In spite of this, the Colonial House is always packed with happy diners. My choice for the best 'local flavor' in Norwood is The Colonial House on Savin Avenue.
Review Source:This place is excellent on all accounts. The food is outstanding - especially the baked stuffed Haddock! Their fried whole belly clams are some of the best in the area as well.
Service is great! You never feel rushed in this place. Waitresses are always overly friendly. I've had the same waitress almost every single time I go there (for several years), and she is always upbeat, nice, and friendly.
Because the place is "old," it doesn't absorb the noise, so sometimes it is a bit loud. Â
I live 5 miles away, and always need my GPS to get me there:-D!
Waitresses are super nice, great cozy atmosphere (fireplace going in the winter, not sure if there are any windows though?) and the food is a great value. Â The eggplant parm is HUGE and better than most in the area in my opinion (Rosario's Grille and the Chateau come to mind as inferior). Â The baked stuffed shrimp was my favorite dish for a while, but I could never finish it! Â Their pizza is also surprisingly good. Â Can't think of anything to avoid on the menu.
Review Source:We've lived in Norwood for 5 years and had never seen nor heard about this place (and it's only a 1/2 mile away from us!). We're homebodies, so we like to stay local when we go out. Conrad's, Napper Tandy, The 99 and British Beer Co. are all getting "old", so we needed to find something different. Thanks for the original review on Yelp, Dawn. Â :-)
We got down there about 6:30 on Saturday, and as expected, it was packed. Â We waited about 10 minutes and were offered a small table in the bar to eat, or we could've waited for a more formal dining booth. Â We chose to eat in the bar.
Pretty standard menu with a few Italian specialties. We started w/ the Appetizer combo on the Specials menu - Mozz sticks, fried mushrooms and "wings". Â Unfortunately, "wings" does not mean buffalo wings, but just plain ol' deep-fried "wing-dings". Â But they were good nonetheless. Â
We stayed w/ the specials and ordered the baked lasagna and the steak tips. The lasagna was delicious and had a very good marinara sauce. Â The tips were cooked med-rare as requested, but could've been tastier & more tender (I guess I'm spoiled by the tips at the Nines and at Conrad's). The tips came with a side of rice and a veggie. Â Probably could've used more rice, as there was at least a 1/2 pound of tips.
Overall, it was a nice new place to visit. We loved the homey atmosphere, and although we're not townies, we can now say we eat w/ the townies.
This is, by far, the best atmosphere in Norwood. It is hard to find and often packed, getting their business solely by word of mouth. Their food is fantastic and CHEAP Â (best French Dip EVER)... and is the booze, which flows in good 'ole pub fashion. The wait staff is friendly and rarely slow. It's a good place for dinner, or just some appetizers to start your night... It's a good place as just the bar as well.
