Good home style food. Had breakfast there last weekend. Very low key but friendly & quick service. Ignore the rundown decor (only reason for 4 vs. 5 stars) because you're there to eat a delicious home cooked meal. Â Great coffee, biscuits & gravy excellent, thick sliced tasty bacon. Wish we had gotten there before 1030a to order Belgian waffles. Very reasonably priced too.
Review Source:Free pie on sudays, ridiculous crowed every day.
Evansville is one of those cities that is content in its existence. Comfortable in its own skin. A place where working at Home Depot is akin to working at, well, Lowes, or the county courthouse for that matter.
The Cross Eyed Cricket is a haven in this town well versed in fast food and medium speed chain restaurants. A gathering place of sorts where that old guy can sit by himself at the strange 1 seater table by the door but then get invited to join a group of large women in the corner.
The food was pretty good too, not the best, but on this busy Sunday the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. I have a certain fondness for these stagnant Ohio river towns, where the river boats stopped coming through years ago and all that remains are fake river boats that have casinos and hold junior proms. Maybe im old old fashioned, but Id rather go to the cross-eyed cricket and get pecan pie.
Is it possible to have a bad meal here?
My Dad is a breakfast expert and he introduced us to the Cross Eyed Cricket when we were visited from out of state. Â The biscuits are tall and tender, and the gravy is full of all kinds of delicious pork grease from both sausage and bacon. Â Maybe even a little something else. Â I have never had gravy that good at a restaurant before.
They give you real butter here, not that fake butter stuff. Â The potatoes are crispy and well seasoned, yet not salty. Â I was actually eating them without ketchup, which is very strange. Â It is like eating at Grandma's house, and Grandma can never do anything wrong.
Don't be sensitive when it comes to the waitresses. Â Since they don't-suffer-fools, it will take a little while for them to warm up.
