Good home style food. Had breakfast there last weekend. Very low key but friendly & quick service. Ignore the rundown decor (only reason for 4 vs. 5 stars) because you're there to eat a delicious home cooked meal. Â Great coffee, biscuits & gravy excellent, thick sliced tasty bacon. Wish we had gotten there before 1030a to order Belgian waffles. Very reasonably priced too.
Review Source:Free pie on sudays, ridiculous crowed every day.
Evansville is one of those cities that is content in its existence. Comfortable in its own skin. A place where working at Home Depot is akin to working at, well, Lowes, or the county courthouse for that matter.
The Cross Eyed Cricket is a haven in this town well versed in fast food and medium speed chain restaurants. A gathering place of sorts where that old guy can sit by himself at the strange 1 seater table by the door but then get invited to join a group of large women in the corner.
The food was pretty good too, not the best, but on this busy Sunday the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed. I have a certain fondness for these stagnant Ohio river towns, where the river boats stopped coming through years ago and all that remains are fake river boats that have casinos and hold junior proms. Maybe im old old fashioned, but Id rather go to the cross-eyed cricket and get pecan pie.
Is it possible to have a bad meal here?
My Dad is a breakfast expert and he introduced us to the Cross Eyed Cricket when we were visited from out of state. Â The biscuits are tall and tender, and the gravy is full of all kinds of delicious pork grease from both sausage and bacon. Â Maybe even a little something else. Â I have never had gravy that good at a restaurant before.
They give you real butter here, not that fake butter stuff. Â The potatoes are crispy and well seasoned, yet not salty. Â I was actually eating them without ketchup, which is very strange. Â It is like eating at Grandma's house, and Grandma can never do anything wrong.
Don't be sensitive when it comes to the waitresses. Â Since they don't-suffer-fools, it will take a little while for them to warm up.
This place looks like a dive when you walk in - my expectations weren't very high. Â I had the ribs and kraut with mashed potatoes, green beans, and a dinner roll for only $7.99. The food was excellent - it's comfort food done right. The dudes working in the kitchen weren't anyone's grandmas, but you could have fooled me. Â The service was efficient and really friendly too. I look forward to returning here the next time I'm in the area and would like to try their breakfast.
Review Source:Great diner food. We used to frequent the Cricket after a night out....great hangover food. Super cheap, really tasty, and the classic egg, meat, potatoes, toast plate also comes with a side of BISCUITS AND GRAVY! And they are good biscuits and gravy too. Huge portions, chicken fried steak is amazing.
Like a lot of diners, it's not the cleanest joint I've been to but it has it's charms. In the mood for greasy diner food? The Cricket's your spot in E-Ville.
The old lipstick on the coffee cup didn't start things off on the right foot for me. Â I couldn't drink the coffee after I was able to wipe it off with my napkin. Â That lack of cleanliness dropped four stars off my rating immediately. Â The omelet recovered one star. Â I won't go here again, however.
Review Source:I met some family in Evansville and my brother in law says he wants some "midwestern food." He went on to describe southern food - okra, fried chicken, grits, etc. I laughed and my wife chimed in, "How about Cross Eyed Cricket?" Genius!
Cross Eyed Cricket tastes like anything your grandma has cooked. The chicken and dumplings are the best I've had. Some claim the Fall Festival is better, but I disagree. The fried catfish is just as tasty as Knob Hill in Newburgh. Every dinner includes an entree and 2 or 3 sides for $7 or $8! The service is fantastic as well. My wife is happy because they have sweet tea.
In all my times at Cross Eye Cricket, I've never had their pie, even though it looks really good!
