This bar is in the district and just like other bars that I have had issues with in the past (the arena), they don't really close at 3 like they say they do. They close at 2:45, at which point they will harass you to finish the last few swigs of your beer because "we close whenever we want to close".  Don't bother speaking with the owner about how his employees are rude because he'll just say "you need to find another bar" because he doesn't care about how his customers are treated. If you want everyone out by 2:45 then change your hours to a closing time of 2:30. I don't care what the "standard" is for the district, if you are open until THREE don't kick paying customers out until THREE. All we wanted to do is finish out beers. We would have (and planned to) happily left at THREE when the bar closed, and would be back tomorrow night but after they way they treated us we will not be coming back. Show some respect and appreciation to the people who keep your bar open and put food on your table. I work retail and would be fired if I ever told a paying customer that "we close whenever we want to" just so I can clock out 15 mins. early. There are millions of people who would give anything to have a job, why not hire someone who is willing to go the extra 15 mins? What a shame.

For my 100th review, I want to do something special. So gather 'round, kiddies, and let Auntie Margaux paint you a beautiful word picture of my favorite bar. That's right, kids. I'm going to tell you about M.D. Green's.

It all started a year and a half ago. I was a bright-eyed Augie student just trying to get by in a big, scary world of late-night shenanigans. After my first ride on what I would later refer to as "the drunk bus" I was ready to, how should I phrase this, "put my party pants on". I saw the bright, intimidating lights coming from many a bar and thought to myself, I need to be eased into this crazy world! My eyes were drawn to a bar that had a more homey, Irish feel. M.D. Green's.

The walls were covered in a stained wood, local artists' work was for sale on the walls and the simple, "there's a bar, there are tables" set-up made me feel like I could really enjoy myself there. The bouncer was scary, but hey, it's all part of the appeal. I went up to the bar tender and asked for a pitcher of Shocktop. "Only $5?" I said. "Yes." He said. And so it began.

I now know that that bartender is a friendly fellow, who loves to have an actual conversation with his customers whilst serving them libations. Unlike other places, he cares to know your name and ask about the family. Now, I didn't appreciate it much at the time, but sometimes you like to go...where everybody knows your name.

Now, I'd been going to M.D's for about two weeks when I saw that there was a live band! How exciting. They were set up right next to the front door. I went back on a weekday and there was karaoke. The magic continued when winter rolled around. Like the Three Broomsticks of Harry Potter, you stumble in from the bitter cold and warm up with a nice glass of Rock Island Ice Water (a hint for all the sneaky little ones out there, it isn't really water! Shhh...).

The story continues with you, friends! Ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out. You'll be glad you did. If not, you can e-slap me or something. Sorry I let my English major freak flag fly on that one, but like I said, it's my 100TH REVIEW! Get to my level, people.

This is the time when I really wish yelp had different categories, and half stars.  MD Green's has some big pros and some big cons, and the result leaves them at about a 3.5, which is about 2 stars better than some of the other local venues.

    Pros:
-Knowledgeable, friendly, tolerant, social staff who somehow magically top off your drinks without asking (or charging).
-A wide range of beverages, including some on-tap variety (and not just two different flavors of Bud).  I never heard of McSorley's before I started coming here.
    -Not completely deafening.
-Not swarmed with every fresh-outta-high-school face in the QC.
-Fun music, including a hysterically funny cover band, who were, I think, all dressed as Waldo, of  Where's Waldo fame.  You know what makes Waldo easy to find?  When everyone is Waldo.  They took requests, or tried to, and they were usually good, and always comical.
-Great location in the RI District.
-Displayed artwork by a local artist who has a truly unique and engrossing style.

    Cons:
-I don't know if there's food here, but...well, let's just say you're probably here for the drinks.
-Small.  Very, very small.  This is an unfortunate standard in the District, though.
-Non-descript decor other than the art.  Seriously, I don't even know how to describe it, because I simply don't remember.

This place is a good backdrop for familiar friends, and a great neighborhood bar.  Dancing ain't going to happen, at least not safely, and it's not a cruisin' locale by any means.
