Go for Happy hour! Good strong drinks 2 for 1. Don't bother with the happy hour food everything I've ordered has been tasteless and unappetizing. Just drink and chill! I love the upstairs atmosphere music ocean view and breeze. Downstairs can get stuffy and hot. Servers are usually in whatever moods and not too friendly. I mostly go to hang with friends n get buzzed for a cheap price. Otherwise I probably wouldn't bother.

This place is pretty hit or miss for me. The happy hour is the best I've personally ever seen anywhere. The drinks are very good too, as is the food. Taco Tuesday is especially good because the tacos are $2-3 each and are surprisingly quality.

The problem I have is that the music is always waaay too loud and the service is always lacking. I can deal with the music because it is a place to appeal to the younger military crowd. I'm young (26), but it would be nice to have a conversation when we meet our friends there. There's no dance floor, so I'm not sure why the music is so loud. On the plus side however, they do have a DJ, so the music is fresh.

The service is my major complaint. I've never had good service. Now sometimes there's not a single table open, so I understand it's busy and going to take some time to get drinks /food and that the servers are busy with their other tables. BUT, I've been there when the place is only half full, and still have to wait the same amount of time between server visits. When happy hour is close to ending, I feel like they try to disappear so you can't get one more round in. Then when they finally show up 1 minute past happy hour, they won't let you order a round on happy hour price. It seems like its on purpose because it happens EVERY TIME.

Other than my pickiness on service and music, it's a pretty cool place with an ocean view. I still find myself going monthly, so I guess it can't be too bad.

Cool place, great view, has a lot of potential. But the roof top section needs a lot of work. It would be much more fun as a bar scene. For instance if there was not assigned seating And more like a bar scene where you can stand up and walk around an socialize. The servers/ service is absolutely terrible. It takes 10 minutes to order a drink from your server plus an addition 10 minute to receive your drink. Usually I just go up to the bar to order my drinks. Overall awesome happy hour awesome view but horrible service.

    Good margaritas

I really like this place and come here when in the mood to have that beachy sunny cool music vibe atmosphere while I drink or eat upstairs.  If your in that type of mood then this will be a five star place for you but it does need some improvements to be an amazing place so rating as follows:

    What needs improvements here.

Curbside appeal could use professional design help
Inside on the first floor is usually dead and could use professional interior design help
People employed here should dress for success. ie Wear Hawaian shirts with black shorts or slacks would work.
Bouncers are scary looking, really makes you think this place is bad news
Bathrooms need professional design help and maintenance
Upstairs could use less help than down stairs but still needs some design help

Jeeeeezzzzzzeeeeesssss turn down the music so people can socialize please, this is not a concert hall.  Music is at the correct volume when you can talk to the person next to you easily, do not try and compensate for placing ten more speakers in great locations by turn the volume up to max on the two speakers you do have.

What does not need improvement here.

Parking is easy with a nice lot right next door.
Food is good enough and cheap, some of it borders on great.
Drinks are spot on with the best happy hour special in all of San Diego.
View and atmosphere upstairs is amazing on those sunny Oceanside days
Bar area and sitting is plentiful
Service has always been really good here
Love the true beachy Oceanside vibe you get here
Very central to everything type location (movies, beach, pier, ect...)

So seriously if they do some improvements here there would be a line out front and I would come here at least twice a month for my fix.  I will keep coming here because the Pros do out way the Cons but really hope they continue to improve.

I went on Sunday Aug 25 2013, for my friend Alofa's 21st birthday. It was too crowded upstairs so we sat at the bar downstairs and got hammered. I ordered the carne asada fries, which were really good. Our bartender, Kirby, was fantastic. He was very friendly, and knowledgeable on drinks. He made our visit very enjoyable. It was my first time there, and I will definitely be back again. Thank You Kirby!

Bottomless mimosa are good. Food is decent. Sometime a long wait. The roof bar is awesome. They have a club here at night. On Wednesday you can come shake your booty to Spanish music night.

This place is awful and ghetto. The rooftop is infested with incompetent people called "waiters." The food is mediocre. I've seen fights here also. Oceanside is suppose to be coming up, this place is an embarrassment to our city, shut it down!

I used to love this place. As a local to Oceanside this was a great place for happy hour, and a great hang out. I feel like Cabo has gone down the drain. Yesterday I went in for happy hour, and was told to wait for a table. This was fine with me, since I knew there would be a wait. We decided to go to the downstairs bar to get a drink and wait for our table. The bartender downstairs was obviously overwhelmed, and in a foul mood. She asked if we needed drink menus and I said no just a food menu. I already knew what I wanted to drink. She handed me the drink menu, and I put it down on the bar. She grabbed it and in a snotty voice said "I guess not". She took the drink menu and threw it on the bar behind her. At this point I wanted to get up and leave, but since we were meeting people there I bit my tongue. The food was OK, I have had better food there. You could tell they were busy so the food wasn't anything impressive. We then got out table, and the waiter came over to take our drink orders. The other people in our party showed up and ordered drinks from him when he came back to drop off ours. Then the waiter never came back the entire night, never brought back the other beer order. At this point we were fed up. We waited 30 minutes for our check, I asked 2 other waitresses if they could get us our check. Finally I had to go up to the manger behind the bar and tell him I had waited for my check for 30 minutes. I went back to the table to grab my stuff and a waitress walks up and says, "I'm sorry I wasn't told I had to cover for your waiter, he went on break". Really!!! Besides that the women's bathroom is disgusting, and it always smells like sewage

Went for a few drinks after walking around. Not bad. Didn't have any food but it smelled good. Decent prices (had 4 beers and 2 drinks for like $43).  Nice views.

This is a review for the upstairs portion only.

Like Jackie E., I was already turned off by this place base on all of the negative Yelp reviews. However, I had a good time here in the upstairs area. It was a chill place to talk to people without such loud music blaring. I can't say the same for the downstairs basement club though--the walls were shaking from the music down there. I prefer the rooftop area much better. Everyone is more relaxed.

There were a few things that I didn't dig here but it was with good reason. There is only one stall in the female bathroom. It is also located in the restaurant which is down one flight of stairs. Not convenient at all and you can only imagine the line of drunk girls needing to use the toilet. Also, try to just order drinks from a waitress. The actual bar area was only manned by one guy and it took forever to get and pay for a drink. One more thing--if you are casually dressed, don't expect to be let into the downstairs club. They're really strict with the dress code for some reason- a stark contrast from the rooftop area.

Other than that, its a good place to hang out with your friends if you're not looking to get too crazy in Oceanside.

Family came into town and we wanted to check out a beachy cool place. We have never been here and wanted to check it out. We waited about 5 minutes to sit down on the roof top. Server took a little while, but thats cause it was so busy and they apologized. We also found out that it was margarita Mondays, buy one get one free!! The DJ on the roof top was great, he had the whole table dancing, singing and eating at the same time! The food was great, service could have been a little better and overall we had a great time. I would recommend to anyone who likes to have a good time!

This used to be "our spot," and someplace we looked forward to eating.  Not anymore, and we probably won't bother making the long drive in the future.  Never had a problem with the food, but unfortunately the service has gotten progressively worse over the last few years, and management doesn't seem to give a crap.  Very sad, cause it used to be such a great place :'(

I really wanted to like this place based on the great view upstairs. However, I got a weird vibe the minute I walked in the door and it continued. We stopped by for a quick drink and bite to eat on a Saturday afternoon, and it was dead downstairs and packed upstairs. We ordered beers (figured it was safe) and chips and salsa. The server was very sweet but it took forever and I noticed it was the same with other people around us.

I really think this place has potential and I would go back if friends insisted, but like previous posters said, I felt like the atmosphere was a cross between a bar in Mexico and a sleezy nightclub trying to be swanky. The bouncers walking around were a bit much and based on the reviews I have read, definitely not needed!

Davina's has a gold mine view and location so maybe they can change things up a bit and work out the kinks. Here's hoping!

After reading some of the Yelp reviews, I was hesitant to go here when my friend invited us out. I was expecting a dump and bad service. We experienced the opposite of that!

We went straight to the rooftop around 8pm, where we were told we'd have to wait around 45 minutes for our table. We were almost going to leave, but we had friends meeting us there, so we decided to get a drink at the bar and sit on the cushioned benches along the wall. Luckily, a table opened up and we were sat within 15 minutes! The manager was friendly and made sure the table and floor was clean before we sat.

The drinks are reasonably priced; same price you'd pay at any other bar. My friends ordered a drink called Lights Out, named after Shawne Merriman. They got it for the looks and the name, but it had pineapple juice, Adios, and Guiness. Our waitress kept coming back to check on us, and we didn't have to wait too long for our drinks. We all had a good time and were surprised at all the negative reviews.

If I could give a half star I would.  We are local Oceanside residents and thought the place looked pretty appealing from the outside.  That's as far as it goes.....foul mouthed waitresses, extremely overpriced tasteless food and smoking everywhere on the rooftop except cigars.  I ordered a build your own burrito and it was completely terrible.  No flavor carnitas, over stuffed with beans and some odd brown sauce on top that had no taste.  The sauce was $1.00 extra btw, not worth it!  We will never come back and will make sure all of our friends and neighbors are aware of this horrible place.....

WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!  This restaurant is stealing from its customers.  Went for drinks and dinner - gave the waitress $20 cash for a $14.12 receipt (which included tax) and she returned only $5 change.  Because we had poor service by our waitress, we thought the mistake was her error, so we let it go, and considered the .88 cents she didn't return with our change as a "minimal" tip.

We made a point to speak to the manager before we left about our service experience and were informed it was the waitress's first day.  So we then thought  it would be wise to let them know that their cash register receipts for the night would be "off" because the waitress had miscalculated our change by retaining that .88 cents.  To our shock and surprise...the manager said, "No, she didn't make an error."  He told us the "owner" of the restaurant does NOT like the employees dealing in coin change so it is "policy" for their receipts to be "rounded-up or down" to the nearest "DOLLAR" so that they only give bills back!!!  He did ask if we wanted our change and then said, "People complain about it all of the time...but we just tell them our policy and then offer to give them their change back."

The problem with this is that it is illegal...it is called stealing.  ALSO, I do not believe they round "DOWN" as a practice... because our bill was a perfect example that proved they do NOT.... If it were, I would have gotten a full $6.00 back (12 cents more than I should)...instead they ripped me off by stealing .88 cents from me.

Chipotle Restaurants are in a class action lawsuit for this same practice!!!

FYI- during the 1 hour time we ate in the restaurant ( had drinks and chips downstairs and then dinner upstairs on the patio...seated at a designated non-smoking table that was unbelievably "within" 5 feet of smokers standing at the bar!!) there were at least a good 150 total patrons in the restaurant - very busy and more people coming and going all the time (it was early during happy hour on a weekend).  If everybody had 50-88 cents change retained by the restaurant...BEFORE ANY TIPPING and you multiply that times 6 or more hours the restaurant is open....you can do the math and see that we are talking about a LOT of undocumented income that they are not claiming as taxable income on a daily and weekly basis.

There are so many "honest" and fabulous eating establishments in North County...this is far from one of those...and it was clear, they "KNOW" what they are doing and do not want to fix it....  I can see why...it's a "cash cow" for them.... with no work involved!!  STAY AWAY...except if you are the California Attorney General and City of Oceanside Law Enforcement.

My wife and I dropped in here for a lazy Sunday afternoon.  Clearly, the rooftop is the place to be.

Prices are a little steep for my taste.  Service is ok, nothing to write home about.

Clearly this joint can get a little, ummm, "lively" as there were a handful of security guards pacing the joint.

Seems to be a case of an identity crisis.  Is this place a club or a cool cantina?  You really can't be both.  Make up your mind.

    If I could give this place a 0 I would !!

Booooo on this place for turning away a group of American veteran from their restaurant  because they rode motorcycles and where wearing there groups patch on the back of there ridding vests . I and a local Harley rider and I guarantee that me and the group I ride with will ever waste out time with coming here and spending our $$$$$ . We would rather give the business to some one eles that is biker friendly . Especially veteran bikers that put there lives on the line for our freedom and this is how this company treats them . The restaurant should go way out of there way to accommodate them and thank them .

I mean come on this is even Oceanside where Vamp Penilton is located just a few veterans live here .

    Boooo on davinas cabo grill!!!!

I was informed today that a group of American Legion Riders were turned away from your restaurant for wearing vests bearing the logo of the American Legion. Apparently, your staff is uninformed as to who exactly the American Legion is. Please take a look at this website to educate yourself and your staff:

    <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.legion.org%2Friders&s=147d67b265c631296a99ccb4a32d53d15ddf899b423621031994b0b49f3ba0c8" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.legion.org/ri…</a>

This is an excerpt from Wikipedia to help your understanding:

"The American Legion is a social and mutual-aid veterans' organization including members of the United States armed forces. The organization was founded in 1919 by veterans returning from Europe after World War I, and was later chartered as an official American patriotic society under Title 36 of the United States Code. The organization is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and also has offices in Washington, DC. The group has nearly 3 million members in over 14,000 Posts worldwide"

In essence, what you did this morning was alienate military veterans and active duty personnel who make up the membership of the American Legion. I'm appalled that a business in the City of Oceanside who probably sees a large amount of military customers would turn away a veterans organization chartered by the Congress of the United States.

I'm hoping this was a grave error in judgement on part of your staff and that the management will take steps to rectify this. If the members of the American Legion were in your restaurant acting inappropriately then I would hope that you bring the circumstances to light so that it can be dealt with by the American Legion accordingly.

I look forward to hearing your response. Without an appropriate response, I will have no choice but to put this situation out to the rank and file of the American Legion, military veterans and the military bases that surround the City of Oceanside about the policies of excluding veterans and American Legion Members from your establishment.

This place gets packed Thur-Sat night, especially near the end of their happy hour. Mostly big islander guy bouncers patrolling the place constantly and shot girls walking around. Good music is usually playing and if you are lucky enough to get a table upstairs, enjoy that beautiful ocean and pier view. I probably would not recommend going to the downstairs club part. Unless your planning on getting thick and ghetto.

Love their 2-4-1 happy hour special though

I came to Davina's Cabo Grill a few months back with 2 of my girlfriends for their Bottomless Mimosas. Our experience there was beyond terrible, literally the worst service I have ever experienced. I have worked in various areas of customer services over the past 8 years, both in retail and restaurants and the way the "Manager" treated me and my friends was NOT okay by any means. There is an old saying "The customer is always right", and I think the owner of Davina's Cabo Grill should inform their staff of this. Customer Service is the #1 reason that customers do not return to a business and it is most definitely the reason that I will never return, nor will any of my friends.

    The story:

Like I said, we went here for their bottomless mimosas. The mimosas were far from bottomless. The "Manager" was walking around with a pitcher, ONE person walking around with a pitcher of mimosas to serve the ENTIRE restaurant which was packed. You would wait at least 20 minutes for your next mimosa after asking for a refill. About 30 minutes prior to the Bottomless Mimosa time ended, all 3 of us asked our server for a refill, keep in mind we had been there for 2 hours and only had 2 mimosas. The manager came over and filled both of my friends glasses and ran out before she could fill mine. She said she would be right back with more. Despite us asking our server several times for her to come back with my refill... she never came back. It was 5 minutes AFTER the mimosa time ran out and she finally returned to tell me that it was after the time and she would not refill my glass. I explained nicely that I had asked her to come back prior to the time expiring, she then told me that they "ran out of champagne". I MEAN REALLY??? Then I got frustrated. I told her that I wanted to speak to a manager. She responded with "I am the manager, if you have an issue then you can talk to me". I asked if there was anyone else in charge that I could speak with and she then said again with a huge attitude " like I said, I AM the general manager". I told her that I wanted the contact information for the owner and that I would be writing a yelp review. THEN she responded with "We don't care about yelp here, so go ahead". HOW CAN A MANAGER SPEAK TO A CUSTOMER THIS WAY? Especially a customer who was demanding only something that was clearly supposed to be given and was advertised by the restaurant. There was a few more moments of conversation where the Manager was raising her voice so loud that the rest of the people at nearby tables were staring. My friends and I paid our bill, tipped our waitress (she was very sweet and felt so bad, she seemed to be scared of the manager). I have since been meaning to write this review and have not gotten around to it. I am writing this in HOPES that the owner reads this and takes the steps needed to get rid of this women who is clearly driving business away. Not only did you guys lose me and my friends as customers, I guarantee any of the people who were there when she spoke to me this way will not return either.  I also hope that anyone who reads this will make an informed decision not to go here, then maybe THEY WILL CARE ABOUT YELP REVIEWS!

Apparently, it is part of the policy at Davina's to arbitrarily beat up male customers. My friend was "escorted out" via chokehold--down a flight of stairs--because he was making a waitress uncomfortable by looking at her funny.

In light of these other posts, I can now see that this is actually a policy decision on Davina's behalf.

I wish I could give this disgusting establishment zero stars. I've never been here but can 100% tell you I will never, ever come here. Last night my friend posted a video to Facebook documenting his experience here. The bouncers told his friend she had to leave, my friend said okay and asked the manager for the check so they could all leave together. While the manager got his check, the "security" team then began harassing him and his sister, called him a faggot and got extremely physical with him going down the stairs (this all happened after they were ALREADY leaving.). The video is horrifying, all you hear is the bouncers yelling and my friend's sisters screaming because they're dragging him down the stairs in a headlock. I hope he sues this pathetic excuse for a restaurant.

Yelpers beware: do not come here unless you'd like to be berated by the bouncers and physically assaulted.

If based on a previous visit that we spent on the top floor patio with a beautiful ocean view- it would be a 5.  Last night was an entirely different story. We were part of a very large party. Our servers were gracious, the manager was very apologetic and we really appreciated that.  It was a Saturday evening and crowded we got there at 4pm and didn't leave till 7pm not because we were chatting but it took that long for our food! It came out in stages- 10 minutes after everyone had their food my husband still didn't have his, but they brought it quickly after asking for it. There is only one potty in the ladies room-BOO! How can an establishment with 3 floors of people get away with that?

Review on the food- Albondigas very bland. Build it your self Carnita avocado Burrito was bland and mostly beans- bland beans. Any Berto's has better burritos for half the price.

I recommend going here as a couple or maybe two couples in the afternoon on the top patio, but not as a large group on the main floor, it was too loud for any conversation and the food was meh!  The staff was friendly.

Oooh, Cabo Grill. I have had maaaany a drunken happy hour here, but honestly, this place kinda sucks. The food is bland, most of the drinks are watered down, and the service and ambiance are non-existant. You couldn't pay me to come here at night when the basement turns into a club, by the way.

I enjoy the ocean view and the margarita with the Coronita, but that's nothing I can't get elsewhere in North County. Sorry Cabo Grill, I think this is me growing up and moving on :o

People that work here are not that great. They treat peeps like strangers who did not take their shoes off when walking into their house. Last time i came i turned around and walked out due to the shitty service and attitude they have. Door man is acts like this is a LA night club with stupid rules to get into the joint.
Only time to come is during the summer when its warm and drinking on the roof is awesome. Dance club downstairs looked a lil ghetto the one time i went down there which i guess explains the 6'8 Samoan bouncer who takes his job super serious.

The waitress was nice, but the food will not make us repeat customers.

The super burrito is huge, but not very good.  I ordered the crab enchilada w/tomatillo sauce and it came with beans and rice.  After a couple forkfuls of beans and rice, I decided that they weren't worth the calories.  They were bland.  The enchilada was just OK.  Also, surprisingly, we were never served chips and salsa.

Good place if you want no cover, a decent dance floor,  and semi-decent priced drinks. Lots of hoes but lots of bros. Marine town so be careful, don't act stupid. There's Latin night on Wednesdays... basically reggeaton. Blegh. Not that great. Friday and Saturday are pretty fun. But it's free so you can't really complain. I used to be a regular here and for the most part it was a good experience. Door men are usually really cool. Once they get to know you, they don't even ask for your I.D.

The upstairs level is a restaurant which is pretty tasty. They do have a happy our I think around 7.  In the basement is the dance floor.

Keep walking down Tremont St.......go to Stone Brewery or Tremont St Tavern.  We were staying in the area for a month..so we walked by this place everyday, we finally stopped in because they have a roof top lounge and thought they would have a great view.
    They have a great view.

This place is so pretentious, the have bouncers with their blue tooth stuck in their ears and when we went, there were not very many patrons.  We asked if there was a wait, he said an hour.  So, we walked in anyways to the downstairs bar, then walked up to the roof top lounge and they had seats available.  Really? An hour...maybe to get waited on...so maybe he "was" an informative bouncer.

Not knowing there is a hostess to seat you...we just sat ourselves to the corner table with the view and another bouncer appears telling us we need to put our names down to reserve the table.  We just went to the bar and ordered our drinks...no one bother us there and the bartender was friendly and got our drinks right away.  Other than the view, there is no reason to really go here.  It did start to get busy and it is a very young crowd, loud music, DJ playing the latest top 20.  I assume with all the security the place gets crazy as the night goes on.  Anyhow, I can say...been there, done that...going to Stone Brewery.

I throughly enjoy the throw back and lack of renovation from the pre-margarita rocks day. No need for new paint, or glossy lacquer in this non-climate controlled three story relic this side of the millennial's  WOOOOOO! Girl diatribe. Wow, that was a mouthful, which is what I am sure many girls are going home to after this happy hour hotspot. Ouch!

Happy hour weekdays encompassing a two for one or double tall, any shelf drink. Double up Grey Goose  and soda for 7 ish dollars. My favorite cousin and I descended on this deal about 5:30 ish and roof top was an hour and a half wait. Ok put the name in.. 1.5 hours later #6 on the list. No worries, we had a great time at the bar downstairs with the lovely blonde bartender babe and lovely lady, smart whitty and proactive on the service. What more can two girls looking for a cheap self-treated night out hope for most! We had the conversation and the tacos and the drinks and se-la-vie! Put enough booze in me and I will eat your taco any day!

I enjoyed the chicken taco first, followed by the carnitas taco (even though I meant to order the carne asada taco but for whatever tequila reason canitas came out of my mouth!) Followed that up with the... you guessed it!... The fish taco. All very different but remarkable tasty in such a fuzzy looking and spinning room.

Put some GOD-DAMN french fries on my taco!!!! Oh you did... thanks!

If I ever get here early enough, which some day I will and I shall grace the roof with my sloppy taco breath, tequila happy butt!

*** WARNING: This reviewOnly for the happy hour... honestly just hobble down to Johnny Mañana's or Colimas and treat yourself to the classics for under $10.

This club is wack. The music is awful, in my opinion. I like mostly hip hop, tho and they play a lot of unce, unce music. The basement dance floor is super hot n sweaty, the bathrooms smell like urine and if u go upstairs to the rooftop, they make you go back outside to wait in line if you want to come back in!!! Oh! And they take your gum away at the door! No gum in the club??? Wtf. And the shots are $8+ and it's not a generous one either. Super wack.

The only plus is NO COVER CHARGE - I would have been sooooo mad if I paid to get in this place. SMH.

While I hate to tarnish Davina's stellar Yelp reputation, I feel I must warn my fellow North County bar patrons. This place is a joke. Settle in for story time.

The first time my boyfriend and I ever visited this fine establishment, we ordered drinks and appetizers. After taking a couple bites of what I remember to be a quesadilla, we noticed someone's "short and curly" right there on the plate, adorning the food like garnish. Not your typical long strand of hair but an actual black, coarse, menacing pube. Needless to say we lost our appetite and left. No apologies from the staff or manager, just a gross look from the server who took the plate away when we told her. I don't even know that they took it off our bill.

Now while eating there ever again was certainly out of the question, we did find ourselves there from time to time for their 2 for 1 happy hour (the only thing I can imagine that keeps them in business). The cocktails got a decent pour and I loved their margaritas. Service was consistently bad, but they were also usually busy. Having been a server myself, I always like to give the benefit of the doubt.

Now here's where it goes from, "This bar is alright, I guess" to "I'm never participating in this shit show again." Last night the bf and I decide to check it out after a day at the beach. I hadn't been there in a while but I immediately realized most of the girls were way too dressed up. I'm talking stilettos and club wear around 5:30 in the afternoon. This place is not a club, but I somehow felt incredibly underdressed in flip flops and a tank top. Odd considering it's about a block away from the beach and it was a chill Sunday afternoon. Let's just call the theme: Ghetto Fabulous. Draw your own conclusions.

We were told there was a 40 minute wait but that the bar was open seating. As we're walking around we witness one of the scowling ex-con-esque bouncers tell a woman she needed to get her feet off the empty chair at her table. Apparently they like to keep their cheap patio furniture looking fancy. We instantly decided the vibe sucked and wasn't worth the wait, so we went across the street to the pirate bar.

About an hour or so later we decided--what the hell--let's give it one last shot before happy hour ended. As we proceed to walk in, the doorman (we'll call him Thug Life) tells my boyfriend he can't come in. We start laughing, thinking he's joking. Thug Life tells us he's serious. We ask why. Rather than owning his ridiculousness, he tells us it's because his manager bounced my boyfriend from the bar a little while earlier. At this point we're in shock. Boyfriend asks to speak to the manager because clearly, they were getting him confused with someone else.

This is where it gets fun. The "manager" (who I believe to be just another douchey bouncer--and seriously, how many do they need in this place?) comes out, dramatically takes off his sunglasses to reveal he's higher than giraffe balls, and asks what he can help us with. We tell him there's a misunderstanding, that we weren't even drinking in their bar earlier, and that we had just come from across the street. Instead of reminding us about this imaginary event that took place earlier--the one that resulted in my boyfriend getting kicked out--homeboy suddenly decides that the reason he can't come in is because he's too drunk. After a little back and forth we realized we weren't going to win the fight. We gave up and went across the street to the Pier View Pub where we (surprise!) shared a pitcher and acted like adults.

I will never give my money to Davina's again. Even when you remove the hairy appetizer and the BROverload of asinine security guards from the equation, it's still just one of those places that isn't nice enough to excuse such terrible service. I expect that kind of behavior in the Gaslamp on a Friday night. Staff and regulars alike treat it as if it's something more than it is--a mediocre beach bar in North County. Save yourself the experience and go somewhere--anywhere--else. You might not have the ocean view but you won't have to look at washed up thugs police the joint either.
