Delaney's is a very popular 5 Points institution and so therefore normally draws a crowd of 5 Points restaurant workers & college students as well as the odd civilian or two.
I've never been disappointed with the food but I've never been overwhelmed either. Its typical "Irish pub fare". The shephard's pie, whiskey steak sandwich, and fish & chips are all good enough to fill your stomach and leave you wobbling out happily enough. The prices are very reasonable for the portions and quality that you get. As far as drink goes, I do wish they change out their tap selection a bit more (or at all), but there are other places you can go for more boutique beers. (see below).
On specific nights of the week, Delaney's will have a line down the block but this normally occurs post-dinner time. At that point, its a free-for-all of freshly minted 21 year olds and the people who love them. If you don't fit this bill, you'd be wise to stroll down the block to their quieter, classier sister bar, the Speakeasy.
One big compliment I can pay to this place is that its very soccer friendly, especially for big events. When other places were too crowded during this summer's Euro Cup, Delaney's could be counted on to at least have the game on their huge projection screens.
Delaney's was one of the only places opened on my 21st--a Sunday night. We had an ABSOLUTE BLAST with the two bartenders, Andy and Andrew and they even signed my dollar. Pint Night is a huge event on Wednesdays here but it's definitely worth coming to on another night! If you're a student at USC, you know that Delaney's is far nicer than almost any other bar in Five Points. It's also a restaurant during the day/evening
Review Source:My friends and I randomly stumbled upon Delaney's, when exploring Columbia one evening. The place is your pretty typical college pub/bar. Dark wood tables and furniture everywhere, old/grungy looking decorations hung on the walls, and big projectors streaming the latest sports game. In the beginning of the night, the pub seemed fairly calm. During the later hours, they had this interesting fellow come up to play live music and take requests. It got pretty crowded at that point. Everyone was clapping, dancing, and having a good time. They have a pretty decent shots list. I would recommend the Starburst one if you like Sprite!! Decently priced drinks and reasonably priced food. Seemed like an alright place to hang out for USC students.
Review Source:Eh, it's ok.
I've been here a few times and it's always because our first choice is either closed or there's some other issue and we can't stay there.
Most recently we ended up at Delaney's because Columbia sucks and has hardly anything open on a Sunday evening. We were in the mood for a Scrabble game and initially went to Goatfeathers, but all of their booths were taken and the only table they had that we could use was a small round table that was not enough for four people plus our drinks, so we left.
We walked a bit and saw Delaney's open and ended up getting a good size wooden booth, perfect for our board game and it also had plenty of room for drinks.
I had a Riesling and it was alright. Another friend had a different glass of wine and didn't seem to mind it. I think the other two had a beer and a tea. Basically, I just feel food and drink wise at Delaney's nothing stands out and is just not memorable. The last time I was at the place I had appetizers but hardly remember anything about them.
This place is ok and I hate to say this, likely still in business and doing ok because there's not a whole lot of competition around. It's your basic bar with average food and drink. The plus is they're one of the few places open on Sunday night!
I don't really have anything bad to say about Delaney's, except that some nights it's full of assholes. Also, the music is often pretty bad...bad...
I love the outdoor tables. Perfect for warmer weather. Also, the back room with darts is a great bonus that I didn't even realize was there until the end of my college days.
When it's crowded, getting to the bar is easier than at other bars. The bartenders don't show favoritism like in some other places, and don't skip over random people (you know what I'm talking about...).
The food is actually really good! I would always come here when I had a craving for good soup or a grilled ham and cheese. Yummsies!
Great service as well. I was stranded in 5 points one night after a friend's car didn't start, and one of the waitresses drove me home! So nice!
In my limited time in Columbia, hung out here the most. Â It's a good Irish neighborhood-kinda bar. Â Thurs-Sat they have music about 8:30, Sun is trivia night, haven't been there during the week, I got a job, people! They have a pretty good beer selection, and food's not bad either. Â Staff is firendly, they greet and say goodbye to everyone coming in & out, maybe that's just a southern thing.
Review Source:I can't speak for the now, but there was a day when you'd spend an entire week looking forward to $2 Pint Night. You'd stuff in there elbow-to-elbow with the masses, & it seemed like Everyone was there, or at least everyone who mattered.
Come to think of it, I probably couldn't tolerate Pint Night now. But when you're 21, it doesn't really get much better.
