I've only been to Dodies (in Allen) to drink, so this isn't based off the food.
On the plus side - awesome happy hour. Super stiff drinks. We've sat at the bar several times and watched them make my drink as liquor + splash of Sprite. Not that I'm proud of it, but of the 4 times I've gone there, I don't remember leaving twice. This is essentially The Loon of Allen, if I had to put it.
The bad - it can get crazy/busy at nights. Some of the loud mouthed frat guys in there put a damper on your enjoyment. Something about sideways hats and tank tops is a common theme there. Not remembering leaving, but not their fault.
Service fine. Somebody tell these folks Cajun doesn't mean FIRE HOT. We ordered appetizers of hush puppies and fried pickles. They were good solid standard sports bar fare. However the boiled crawfish were absent onion, garlic and other standard Louisiana seasoning. In lieu, there seemed to be an entire can of red pepper. If you like well seasoned crawfish this isn't the place. The crawfish etoufee was similarly over peppered. The fried crawfish were cooked just right and didn't suffer from the over abundance of pepper. I'm from Louisiana and have crossed this place off my list unless I 'm just looking for a cold one.
Review Source:I don't know why there are such bad reviews for this place, but we like it! Their crayfish prices are great, especially compared to the Dodie's in Frisco ($4.99 vs $9.99) and the service has always been very friendly. Their prices are kind of high, but it's seafood...anywhere in North Texas is going to be kind of high! But, we usually stick to an appetizer such as gumbo and then a couple lbs of crayfish and we leave happy and full. Our waitress this time was great, she even joked around with us for a few minutes and was always very prompt with food and drinks. The bar tender also made me my own drink as I like them (Vodka, grapefruit juice, and a splash of pineapple juice) without any complaints. I did wonder why it was pretty empty, but it was also a Monday night. Other than that, we have no complaints!
Review Source:I've been to Dodie's in Allen twice and have had similar experiences. Â The service was good both times I went. Â The wait staff and bartenders are friendly and attentive. Â The first time I went I had the Pasta Monica pasta dish with blackened shrimp. Â This was by far one of my favorite pasta dishes...it tasted so good. Â The portion size is really big too. Â The second time I went I had the BBQ Shrimp. Â I was pretty disappointed upon tasting the shrimp. Â The sauce was extremely salty almost beyond edible. Â Luckily they served rice and bread on the side...I'll probably just be getting the Pasta Monica when I go back to this place. Â One positive is that their beers are really cold...that's always a great thing in my book.
Review Source:If you aren't expecting GOOD Cajun food, Â this place is pretty good for a sports bar. Food does not compare to Dodies in Lower Greenville from back in the day which was the best Dallas had to offer when I first moved to Dallas 15 years ago. We have given this place a NUMBER of chances because of its predecessor and vacinity to our house. Disappointed again. We WON't go back.
Review Source:Not the best Cajun place to eat... we've given this place several tries and we prefer Razzoo's. Â Disappointing because the location is so convenient for us.
Most of the servers are friendly, but the actual service is just "okay". Â The atmosphere on a Friday or Saturday night is not conducive for conversation. Â We went on a Saturday night at 7:00 for a birthday dinner and the music was already so loud that it was impossible to hear anything. Â It becomes a bar scene... even that early.
The majority of the food is average. Â Of the items we have tried, my husband and I like the fried crawfish legs and the shrimp cocktail. Â Those are consistent and good.
I would recommend it for a place to watch a game, but nothing else.
Once upon a time, we LOVED this place. Maybe because we had always like the punishment of paying way too much and the absolute worst service you will ever have. The service was so bad for the first year we attended this fine establishment that we used to kid that the application must specify that you agree not to get anything in a timely manner. None the less, it was fun with a great atmosphere. We came here nearly every other weekend for over a year and loved it. I miss those times.
Then....THEN...things changed drastically.
I don't know what happened, or why there was a change when they sucessfully over charged people and kept it packed. But the food got worse and the management crappier. The crowd changed to a less desireable one, and it started to turn into a stagnant crap hole. Don't get me wrong, I LOOOVE dive bars, but this isn't that. It's more like "Snooki", trashy and stupid but some how expensive. I don't want to go to a bar that reminds me in any way of "Jersey Shore".
Now get yourself ready for this next part...it's ugly. This is the shotgun blast to the face that broke the camel's back. I was with my fiance and 3 friends at Dodies after it had seen a huge downturn, and all 3 of my friends had at least 2 drinks extra added to their tabs. I don't know if the wait staff was trying to get their friends free drinks of if they commonly participate in these unethical business practices, but I draw the line at thievery.
One last thing, their jell-o shots frequently smell like fish. I don't know who thiks it's a good idea to make jello right next to fish products but somehow they came up with the idea. That should speak volumes about this place...someone thought it was a OK to have fish flavored jell-o shots. Think about it America.
Now that there's so many other options in Allen, save your money. Go to Pluckers, Kelley's, Top Golf, Down Under, Conways...or any of another 20 places that will top this.
I first want to say that I am a regular at the Dodie's in Frisco during football season. We meet up there for the great atmosphere and the tvs. Frisco locations has the all the tvs on LSU games and with the sound on, it makes for a great Saturday afternoon or night if you are a LSU fan. It's a Cajun restaurant so it goes hand and hand with anything from Louisiana. With that said, I met some friends up at the Allen location because it was in the middle for all of us. We walk in ask the hostesses if we can please sit in front of the tv that will have the game on. She said she didn't know where they would be playing the LSU game and to ask my server to change the tv. Oh ok...
There were also other tables around us that was also there to watch the LSU game as well. We thought this will be fun. The manager had put the LSU on the big screen and we were waiting for the game to start. Another group came in and wanted to the manager to put on a different game with sound. The manager changed the LSU game off the big screen. I asked to speak with the manager ( tall guy in his late 30s early 40s, thin) and I asked why he changed the game off the big screen. He said that it was a more important game on and it doesn't matter because LSU was going to win anyway. I said we are in a Cajun restaurant correct? He said that is just how it is. I said I would never come back here again. And he just shrugged his shoulders and walk away. I just can't believe with all the different bars and restaurants in the DFW metroplex a manager couldn't careless if we returned or not.
The only saving grace was our server was super sweet and very attentive.
Nice change of pace for me and the family since we NEVER go cajun. So we ordered mildly: hush puppie appetixer, Red Beans and Rice with sausage and Crab Legs entrees. Hush Puppies were good but small (I expected the giant ones); Red Beans and Rice was good (again portions could be larger) and Crab Legs (portion size just right for this one). Overall, everything was "fine" not spectacular. The waitress kept forgetting things but she was friendly as was the rest of the staff. I probably won't go back just because it is not my "scene." There is "biker guy" parking and I have an Suv full of tots...
Review Source:Another weekend night and we wanted oysters.
We decided that we would try Dodie's in Allen.
The time was Saturday night, around 6:30, we walked in with no waiting.
This is a plus for Allen!
The staff was friendly, and we were seated promptly.
Drinks arrrived quickly, and refills were always offered.
Another plus! Â Things were looking good so far...
Oysters were "OK", and price was the usual for a dozen; no surprise.
At the very least the size of the oysters were decent for warm weather.
I order the stuffed crab and tilapia house special
The portion was a good size, and the fish was cooked near perfect. Â
The downside was  the crab.  I guess crab to this place equals crab cake (read more breading then crab). Â
They forgot the sauce and brought it after they served my dish. I have had better, so pass on the "special".
The peel and eat shrimp were really good. Â
This dish was presented "boil" style with corn and potatoes; large portion!
The cat fish and fried shrimp platter was rather enticing. Â Again a large portion, large shrimp with great taste..
The bill came and for three dinners, three beers, one soft drink, and two appetizers, I ended up dropping a Cnote with tip..
I know seafood is pricey, but really? Â This is a BAR that serves Seafood. And the seafood is not that great.
For that amount of money we could of road tripped it to Louisiana or Houston and had really GOOD seafood.
If you want a bar to watch the game and maybe have bar food go here. If you are looking for casual GOOD seafood keep fishing!
The food is good and if you've never lived in New Orleans, you'll be totally satisfied with their "Cajun" food.
Unfortunately this place is Not a restaurant but a Bar that serves food.
Don't expect great service at the bar or a table. The staff is totally self focused as is the management. Don't expect any real thanks for your business either. It's "Thanks" by training, not from the heart.
Service and Atmosphere get a 1/2 Star. Food gets 3 Stars.
We have been visiting Dodies on and off for a couple of years. Food and service has always been okay. But always a good place to meet friends and hang out with some good drinks. We have not been in a couple of months. Some friends wanted to meet there tonight and talk about March Madness betting. To our surprise there was a completely new menu. Looked really good, however they took a lot items off that we liked. And the prices seemed to have increase. Food came out with poor presentation and it just went down hill from there. Chicken seemed to be a low quality frozen item. Fried shrimp was very fishy and it too was low quality frozen food. Very sad
Review Source:My boyfriend and I had a long day house hunting in the area and our friends have told us that Dodies is a nice place to eat, grab a beer and relax blah blah blah, SO we go check it out! Its about 630 today (a Sunday) and they are not busy so we walk straight up to the bar and pick open stools. The lady bartender looked straight at us..no smile..no "be right there" no hello NOTHING, then the guy bartender did the SAME thing. They both blatantly ignored us after making direct eye contact. Another couple came in and sat at the bar across from us and the guy bartender when straight up to them and put napkins down for there drinks. We waited another 5 minutes while starring at both bartenders and nothing happened so we got up and left. Right as we were gathering our things to leave the girl bartender said from across the bar "can i help you" we ignored her and walked out.
not going back
I ended up here with a birthday party posse intending to get seriously drunk. So my review is exclusively on Dodie's as a bar rather than a restaurant.
The place definitely feels more like a bar than a restaurant - at least around 9pm on a Saturday night. The place was pretty packed, and there were bouncers at the door ready to ID and bracelet everyone. There is an ample outdoor patio for when the weather is nice, and plenty of large TV's to watch whatever sports games are going. Even as a bar there is a wait staff, which was nice considering I didn't have to struggle to the crowded bar to try and get a drink.
As far as the menu goes, there aren't really any signature drinks to make this place unique, but the prices are nice on the weekends, wells starting at five bucks and large drafts at four-fifty. And at some point girl start going around selling jello shots, although I don't remember for what price. So far a decent place to drink, right?
Eh.
Overall this place was kind of unpleasant for me. I was excited to watch the Stars game while we drank, but as soon as we sat down, a DJ came on and started blaring - and I mean BLARING - music at a migraine-inducing volume and playing the music videos on the screens. And it wasn't good music, either.
The waitress was nice enough, but her visits to the table became too infrequent for my tastes. In fact, when my friend became suddenly ill and needed to leave immediately, it took me ten minutes just to find her to pay. And on top of it the bouncers (at least the ones I interacted with) were surly at best. In fact, one particular bouncer, in an event where a female member of our group wanted to check on our ill male friend when he was in the bathroom for thirty minutes, not only yelled at her for "trying to enter the men's room", but ten minutes after the fact (which included standing behind her chair the whole time) decided to kick her out. I'm not justifying anything this girl did or anything, but there was definitely a better and more diplomatic solution to that whole whatever it was.
Frankly, I doubt I will return to Dodie's in the future. The obnoxious music was enough to deter me (why would you blare music if there isn't a dance floor unless drunk people just decide to scooch their tables over to make one?). The service and the drink choices were run of the mill and forgettable. Unless I'm up for dinner and drinking simultaneously there is absolutely nothing positive that this place has to offer that I can't find anywhere else.
I kind of happen to agree with the previous poster who said that it was a bar in Allen (That serves liquor!)...and you can't expect much...I was just happy to find a place off Stacy to get a drink...
That being said, bar food, liquor, cheap drink specials, and live entertainment...heck yeah!
Ya know...Allen is rapidly turning into Plano, so places like this with a country appeal are rapidly becoming extinct...maybe I just have an emotional attachment to bars where a the most common drink isn't a martini, and all the people are not snobs...I have moved away from the area, but when I head up that way Dodies is my suggestion for a few drinks and a good time...would you rather go to chilis? Lol
Food has never been the reason I've come to Dodie's and tonight they put the final nail in their own coffin. Not showing UFC fights anymore??? Packed house 2 Saturday evenings a month wasn't worth whatever the UFC charged for viewing rights. I bet the next bar is open in this location before the end of 2011. RIP Dodies Place - @ Village at Allen.
Review Source:When a customer says "the salsa is not hot" don't say "sorry bout that" and walk away. When a customer says "sandwich was ok, little thin on the meat", again, don't say "sorry bout that" and walk away!!! Do something! Anything to make that customer feel like you give a damn! You could go back and fill up the salsa bowl from the same jug but at least you took the initiative! Needless to service here leaves a lot to be desired. This is my third time here, my third different meal (hamburger, pasta, and ribeye sandwich), none of which were good enough to make me come back.
Review Source:If I could give less than 1 star I would.
I have been to Dodie's in Allen a few times before and never liked it but I was completely appalled by my visit this weekend. Â
I went to see Night Train (which is a great band that plays there sometimes, you should look them up) several other people were meeting us up there and we ended up with about 20 people total. Â My group was the first to show up and I clearly explained to the server who was on my tab since I was paying for several people. Â We ordered beers and appetizers, which all came out slowly. Â She could not tell me what was on tap. Â
After a night of great music and poor service We received the tab and it was mixed up with someone else's at a different table. Â Once we figured it out I still think I was overcharged but wanted to leave so paid. Â She put an auto gratuity of 25% on my bill of 3 people and when I asked to change it she told me to speak to a manager. Â I found one and asked to change the 25% to 20% because I thought the auto gratuity was too high. Â He was very rude to me and when I asked to speak to someone else he told me that he was the owner. Â Looking on facebook, the same person listed as the owner is the person I talked to. Â He then yelled at me, made rude remarks and asked several times to speak to my husband 'since I could not handle paying the tab'. Â He also sarcastically asked if I wanted to fire the server with him. Â All I wanted to do was change my tip.
I have never been treated to poorly in my life and I am shocked that the owner of a bar/restaurant is treating his clients this way. Â I will not be back there for any reason.
Not really impressed with this place, but go here every now and then just because its just blocks from my house. Â Also too I do like the atmosphere & the Sunday Brunch, but aside from that...not much else.
The service is hit or miss and they can't make mixed drinks to save my life! Â Also, I ordered lemon/peppered chicken wings Sunday night and they were seasoned too much. They appeared too dry as if they've been sitting for too long. Â I hate that. Â They should have been fresh. Â
I'll continue to go here though, but just to hang out with friends over a few beers.
Every time we go here it's always a disappointment in service! It's not like they have so many people working there they don't know what to do with them all!
They have a 'all people must be in the party' to be seated rule. They made us wait half an hour for everyone to arrive. Then we had to wait while they made a place for us (cuz us standing there wasn't warning enough). Â Then we finally sit down to receive the slowest service EVER! and the MOST frustrating part, they sat other parties without all their people there!!! Â Seriously?! The manager that day SUCKED and was completely disregarding everything.
So this season we gave them another try. Service again was extremely slow to non-existent. They had plenty of waitresses standing around flirting, but if you wanted a refill, too bad!
And this time, the smell of mildew is extremely unappetizing! I mean seriously, you haven't been open long enough for a smell like that.
ugh!
First the good: The Fried Stuffed Jalapenos were awesome. I shoulda just had another order of those and called it good.
Now the bad: I ordered the El Paso (I think that's what it was called) which is a burger with fried jalapenos and spicy cheese. Sounds good, no? Well, what would you think of it if I told you when the burger arrived to my table, all the cheese had run out of it, onto the plate and soaked all the way into the bottom part of the bun? Yeah, I know.
I should have seen the writing on the wall the second I walked into the place when my wife and I stood at the entrance for 2 minutes waiting to be seated. While I'm sure many of the folks there were busy attending to the OTHER 2 PEOPLE IN THE ENTIRE RESTAURANT, that doesn't really excuse the two waitresses who were SITTING AT A TABLE NOT 10 FEET FROM US. Perhaps Dodie's simply doesn't want 'my kind' around there. The 'paying with cash and leaving a 30% tip for quality service' kind. No worries, plenty of other places to visit.
Who said "a bar in Allen...you can't expect too much" because no matter what city I'm in I expect a damn lot! And on this particular night Dodie's delivered.
Went here to watch a game. I'm not saying which one since my team didn't win. Sat at the bar and ordered food.
Had the Dodie's Sampler. I really liked the home made potato chips and sour cream dip--a lot. I ate most of it and my friends sort of just stared at me like "did she really do that." Yes, I did. Also had torpedoes which are their version of jalapenos stuffed with queso cheese, wrapped in bacon, battered and deep fried. All things are better with bacon. The tray had mini quesadillas, queso, salsa and corn tortilla chips which were okay. Also had chicken strips which were pretty good. I like the spicy BBQ sauce. Fries were not good but I won't order them anyway. I will get chips instead.
Bartender on duty was Mike. I never ran out of beer. He was very friendly and seemed to know everyone in there.
Prices were fair. Food was good. Beer was cold. TVs everywhere. Wasn't so packed I couldn't enjoy the game. Was packed enough where I felt like I was at a Cowboy watching party. I would go here again...even in Allen.
And.... third strike, they're out. I am a pretty passionate football fan, and I normally try to bring several people with me when I watch a game. So why not give Dodie's a third shot at my business! Especially with a bunch of guys, but I wanted to call ahead, as my Dish package did not have Fox College Sports Channel. Sure enough, they did have Directv, which covered the game we wanted! Then I asked her to make sure they could put one of their MANY TVs on the game, and the girl on the phone said, but my manager said we will NOT be showing the Baylor game tonight. And so it was done... with a simple phone call, rude waitstaff strikes for the third time. As a season ticket holder of the Allen Americans Hockey team next door, my business will filter to one of the other businesses before and after.
Review Source:What can I say? It is a bar... in Allen. You can't expect too much from it.
I've been a few times after my softball games on Friday night and every time I've been there is a mixed crown. One time the place was POPPIN, they had great music, service was on point and everybody was having a good time.
Then the next time, they had an 80s cover band - which I think drove away a lot of people. Service was slow, we had to wait longer than anybody should ever have to wait.
If you need a conference area in the middle of the day (random, I know) they do have a private room that can be closed off for your use with no charge.
Drinks are pretty average priced - $4 to $5 depending on what ya order. Although its not the greatest place, it is probably one of the only places in Allen with a huge patio, which I think is one of the reasons its done so well.
Well, I can see where everyone is getting their reviews, however we have always had good luck with Dodie's. Â
First off, we knew going in this was not going to be the Cajun location we were used to with the name Dodie's (I am not sure they are even the same chain) so that helped.  Secondly, it is a sports bar... don't be surprised that they don't cater to children or groups wanting to have a quiet dinner.  Third, stick with the super nachos.  They are awesome and have us going back almost weekly.  (My husband and I share them for our meal). Â
We have not had any issues with service, but we tend to stick to week days and non-game days.  Overall, we have been very pleased with Dodie's and if you are cool with the sports bar environment and some very good nachos, check them out.
Wait staff- F
Bartenders- F
Food- B
Atmosphere- C
Management- non-existing
Been there a couple times....food is good but everything about this place SUCKS! When they do have music its way to loud, the bartenders are slow and ignore you unless they know you and the wait staff......the wait staff is the absolute worse piece of crap excuse for a wait staff I have EVER experienced. And don't ever even think about staying till close, 5 minutes before close they push u out and pour whatever you're drinking down the drain....hate this place, will never go back!
Visited again for the "season end" party for the Allen Americans hockey team. We had good service, and my two large beers were very cold and tasted great. My wife's turkey reuben sandwich was merely OK, as were the fries. The sandwich was served with cole slaw on it but not much dressing, and the meat didn't have great deal of pastrami taste. The fried jalapenos are a bit better in theory than in practice; the bacon's fat doesn't render out and it's left kind of flabby. The breading is a bit too thick for my taste.
The "thermonuclear" wings were not very hot; the sauce had a lot of crushed red pepper flake, kind of an odd ingredient IMO. These particular examples were overcooked, so the fat was completely rendered and the skin was crispy (good things), but the meat was getting close to chicken jerky (not a good thing).
Nothing has really changed in the interior since our last visit; it's still loud but with plentiful TVs.
We drove around the Village at Allen parking lot and decided to give the local guy a shot at our business. WHAT A MAJOR MISTAKE. Â We sat for 45 minutes after the waitress took our order, had to then go up and find the owner (cuz our waitress had never come back), to only find out she had never submitted the order. Â But what is worse, I sent an email to the owner the next day to give him a second shot at making things right and to this day he has NEVER RESPONDED. Â This is a place to be avoided at all costs.
Review Source:Just another sports bar, no more, no less. Wide open and noisy with plenty of big screens. The place seems to have quite a few hockey people around given there is a rink across the parking lot from the bar. Service was good but for some reason I felt rushed. I guess it was because we were seated near the kitchen entrance/exit.
Fried pickles were good and lots of them. Catfish was okay for a sports bar. The slaw is different but it tastes really good. Fajita salad was good and the chicken was moist. Avoid the house style wings with dry rub; they were really dry. If you are in the mood for chicken I recommend you save your money and get a bucket of chicken at the KFC. Beef fajitas were good as well. One other item to note-- you will not go thirsty at this place as they serve tea and soft drinks in over sized plastic glasses.
Overall the place was okay if you are looking for a sports bar in Fairview. I would not suggest taking your kids with you. It would be more fun to go with the guys on game day to take in a few beers and talk big.
We went to this place on a Saturday afternoon. Â It's a sports bar but they were having a birthday party for a seven year old in a side room. Â It seemed odd to me but it didn't matter to us.
No one greeted us as we walked through the front door and to the bar. Â The place is laid out kind of weird with spartan decorations. Â They have a lot of tvs, but their placement is pretty bad. Â We sat at the bar but couldn't view any of the tvs over the bar because they were so high up--you had to slide down into your seat and crane your neck up to see a tv. Â The other placements all seemed to the side of where you were sitting. Â If you sat in a booth you had to look 90 degrees to your left or right. Â As we were in there on an afternoon most of the tvs had a lot of glare on them from the windows. Â So, while there were a lot of tvs, they are placed bad, and you can't see much from the glare.
Service was meh. Â The bartender took our order and filled it, but then did not come back for a long time. Â This was disappointing because I asked for a menu while ordering my drink--usually this means I want to order food too, but she didn't come back for a long time to take my food order. Â I saw the bartender a few times in a corner either talking with other employees standing around or just texting on her phone. Â Customer service isn't a priority here.
As for food I only ordered one thing the jalapeno torpedoes. Â They are jalapenos wrapped in bacon and deep fried. Â They were pretty much bland.
I'd been wanting to try this place and used Father's Day as a chance to do so.
When we arrived there was no one to greet or seat us. Wandered over to the bar and the bartender seated us in a hurried and not very friendly manner. We weren't off to a great start...
They have raw oysters that are Ameripure or something like that. It means they've been pasteurized to reduce the chance of illness from raw food. I've never had these before. We found the oysters to be rather tasteless and I don't know if it is from the pasteurization or just a boring group of oysters.
My wife ordered a beer which came in a nicely cold glass but it was a very thick and heavy glass that wasn't comfortable to hold. I started with a Crown and Coke which was rather weak. Followed up with Jack & 7 which was much better.
We ordered chicken friend chicken and Pasta Monica with crawfish. The pasta was very nice and the CFC was pretty good too. For sides we had french fries (VG), red beans and rice (bland), steamed broccoli (G), and mixed vegetables (essentially nothing but broccoli).
Service was a bit up and down. Not bad enough to annoy but not that good considering the high staff to customer ratio. There are a LOT of flat screen TVs which was very nice. However they need to tint the windows to make viewing easier. Overall the experience was "OK". Not sure we will ever make it back given the amount of competition.
