On my first visit w/ some friends, I thought 'okay, this place is okay'. Â But, I'm glad I've visited a couple more times because my rating has bumped up a notch due to the excellent Guinness. Â It's smooth and creamy- not bitter, like many places in the US (usually caused by unclean taps/lines and not enough throughput). Â It's poured correctly and is cold- which is fine w/ me, but I can drink room temp too.
Food wise, I'm still on fence between 3&4 stars. Â I've tried the following and my favorite was the fish and chips.
brisket - good sandwich, but felt too greasy
fish and chips- fish really was good. Chips are more like just plain fries- not really chips, but they are tasty, especially w/ malt vinegar.
boxty appetizer - good way to try the boxty and can be a whole meal
rueben - again a little too greasy for me
The final thing that swayed me to 4 stars is the manager, Darren. Â At least twice out of 4-5 visits, he's stopped by our table to find out how our service had been and if we were enjoying the food. Â This is a very good trait for managers. Â Some of the table service has actually been a little slow, but w/ Guinness this good, it's worth the wait.
Had a great dinner with my fiancé there.  The menu is great. We started with brisket nachos which were VERY good.  She had the crab cakes and I the Bangers & Mash for dinner.  Both were outstanding.  We were able to sit outside on a very nice evening, then able to go in and enjoy the Friday night music festivities.  The service was very good.  It was a busy night, but our server was on top her customers throughout the night.  We had a great time and will definitely be going again and regularly.
Review Source:We ate an early dinner here and sat out on the balcony. Weather was perfect and wasn't overcrowded. I went expecting bar food but was given a pleasant surprise. I ordered the fish and chips and they were cooked perfect! Probably the best fish and chips I've had in years, and especially around this part of the area. My other half had the meatloaf which was a little different than traditional meatloaf but just as delicious. This was at a bar, but the food was high quality, not bar food!! We will definitely be making this one of our go-to spots for good food and a great environment.
My favorite part - they're green beans. They're sensational here so make sure you get a dish that has them!
We stopped here on the way home from a show at DPAC for a quick bite to eat. Â It was definitely a good choice! Â Even though we had to order from their late night bites menu, there were plenty of options to choose from. Â Hubby ordered fish & chips, which he really enjoyed, especially for the price (about $8). Â My brother loved his brisket nachos (so much so that by the time I wanted to try one, the plate was empty). Â My cheese fries were ok, it's hard to screw up cheese fries. Â Our server was super friendly & efficient & actually seemed to enjoy her job. Â We'll be back again when in this area of Cary or if the hubby gets a craving for some affordable fish & chips!
Review Source:Had an early dinner at Doherty's yesterday with my son and the food was SENSATIONAL!!!
My Steak and Feta salad was fresh, flavorful and tender, his fish and chips were crisp and served with a generous side of gorgeous  green beans. (when a 13-yearold boy raves about green beans-you know you are doing something right!).
Our waiter suggested that we share a slice of chocolate chess pie for dessert and it was quite possibly the MOST delicious dessert...EVER!!! The taste and presentation were 5 star quality
Round 1 of my "I just moved to Cary, NC" rotisserie of reviews...
Irish Pub..I'm from Massachusetts...I'm game
One of the very first places I stumbled both in and out of during my short time in Cary, remains one of my favs. You must take a place to heart that can pour a decent Guinness and has corned beef apps in their menu. Add to that the friendly ambiance of both regulars and bar staff and you have a killer combination. If I could take a half star off I would, based on their chicken wings..pouring on the salt is not the way to go with WINGS!! Then again..who orders wings at an Irish Pub?! Â
Back to the Guinness...it's all about the Guinness. This place has not been around for long in their current ownership/name..but it looks like it's found a home. See you around 7...Great service, great vibe. Live music.
I met here with friend a couple times. The food is pretty good and the atmosphere is cool. It definitely has that Irish Pub feel. The beers are decently priced. The service is hit or miss. Especially if they are busy which is Thurs or Fri nights. The wings were surprisingly really good. It's too bad this place doesn't have dart boards or pool tables. My friends and I would go a lot more often.
Review Source:Perfect Irish bar with great food, friendly service in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Â Traditional beers you would expect at an Irish bar are on tap. Â I like the blackened chicken sandwich and the burger, both are served on a yummy pretzel roll. Â The owners were able to complete renovate and restore what was once a fantastic bar...but they raised the bar and it is a lot nicer than what used occupy that space.
Review Source:Checked out the corned beef and cabbage here on St Patty's Day. The corned beef was juicy and the veggies were cooked perfectly without being over- or under-done. Also, fresh, delicious green beans with garlic; probably the best green beans you can get in any pub. The fish & chips were served on faux newspaper (charming touch) and there was a hefty portion of fish. We were seated promptly even though it was rather crowded for St Patty's Day and a band was playing outside. Friendly, efficient servers with lots of flair.
Review Source:I used to love Connolly's and their Chicken Cordon Bleu so we decided to give Doherty's a try. I was sad to see they didn't have Chicken Cordon Bleu but we started with the Spinach & Artichoke Dip which was delicious! For dinner I ordered The Killarney which was SO GOOD that I actually had a dream about it that night!!
I would gladly recommend this place :)
Went to Doherty's for the first time last and had a wonderful experience. The staff and management was very friendly, polite and provided excellent service. The menu had a nice mix of offerings of both food and beverages. Are meal came on time, was hot and wonderful. We had the corn beef and cabbage and beef brisket, both very well done, flavorful and well worth it. It's a great atmosphere for just hanging out at the bar or having a nice dinner. Looking forward to returning again.
Review Source:Wow has this place changed. Â I was here a few times years ago when it was another name. Â Now they have changed the name, the menu, and expanded into the space next door that used to be Subway. Â First off I like the decor. Â You expect any Irish pub worth a damn to be dimly lit and covered in dark wood. Â They've got it here so you get as good of legit pub feel you can get for a strip mall. Â They also have flat screen TV's viewable from every seat in the house so this would be a great place to watch a game. Â The beers on tap (17 of them!) are admirable with the requisite nectar of the gods (Guinness) and other imports and some locals. Â For lunch I had the corned beef and cabbage lunch entree. Â It was really tasty and I appreciate the fact that they cure and slice their own right in the kitchen. Â The meat was laid on a nice bed of cabbage, potatoes, and carrots. Â The portion was just right for lunch and the $10 price wasn't bad. Â One of my co-workers got some appetizer that was like an Irish spring roll stuffed with meat and cabbage and it was surprisingly good. Â I'd certainly give those things a whirl again. Â I was very pleased that I tried this location again because it is certainly the best true pub experience you can find in the suburban child infested strip mall hell that is Cary.
Review Source:From my mom: We used to come to Connollys. We thought we would try Dohertys and thought it was just a name change. Great food, great service. A very definite come back.
Some more from me: To me, eating at a pub is for the atmosphere, the beer, and heavy, greasy, basic "pub food." Not the case. The food was surprisingly lighter, more interesting, and more of a draw for the place than I would have expected, which I liked. I had the salmon BLT which I've never had before, my bro had a brisket sandwich, my mom had a steak dish (medallions?), and my dad had that day's special -- chicken with apples and something else good stuffed in there. I tried all four and they were really good! I ordered the Salmon BLT ambivalently, and now I think that Salmon in a BLT is a great idea. We had no issues with the service. In fact, they were very attentive and one of the managers came to see how we liked everything. Super friendly.
Good attempt at the real deal in a sterile Cary strip mall.
I really struggle with liking the atmosphere of places that on the inside look like you just came in off an 18th century cobble stone street but on the outside are really 'just another suburban strip mall', but this place had a really nice vibe and very friendly employees. Â I was greeted several times on the way in and on the way out.
I was surprised to see the reviews regarding service as I received excellent service, to the point I actually over tipped. Â I actually didn't go there to eat so I haven't experienced the bad pacing, but I did see several server notes around the place regarding steps for providing excellent service. Â I'm guessing my server read them. Â I joined some friends for drinks after they ate. Â They raved about the food, but I only drank beers. Â We stayed in the dining room only drinking and no one's glass ever got empty before being asked if they desired a refill and we never felt rushed or like we should have moved to the bar area.
I definitely will return to try the food. Â I am hopeful that the reviews my friend gave me were more accurate than those posted here, but i'll be sure to give an update if not.
A little disappointing. Â I have to agree with a previous review about the service. Â I had barely started my sandwich when the waiter plopped the bill on the table. Â That's a pet peeve of mine. Â I would have ordered another beer or dessert, but not after that. Â Sandwich okay, but that's all. Not sure I will try again, but it does have Guinness on tap!
Review Source:tried it for the first time this past weekend. overall, we liked it and will try it again. Really liked the hot wings, but had to ask for celery. (?)
Sandwiches we had were ok. I will try something diff next time. Liked the fries, but ours were cold, so we asked for hot ones and go them. We had only had our wings about 5 mins when our food came out (and we ordered our wings @ 15 mins before ordering our sandwiches) so my husbands sandwich got cold. Very bad planning. Â We normally wait until our appetizer is on the table before we order our entrees just b/c of this issue. Â It's a servers job to know how to "pace" the meal. Â Entrees shouldn't be put on the table until the salad or appetizer course is CLEARED from the table.
Service was efficient, but completely lackluster. Our server could have cared less about whether or not we return to the pub. Â He was one of those
servers "just doing his job". The poor female servers had to dress up (I'm guessing b/c of Halloween) in the most unflattering outfits - ugh! Â and yuck! def not appropriate for a family pub (it was 6:30 and yes there were kids there!); actually, it was a turnoff for adults too. Â Borderline vulgar - costumes were much too small for them.
Just MHO. Â We will try this Pub at least once more, but it has some strong competition all around it. Â Service is everything when the food is about the same as everyone else in the area. Never saw a manager or owner checking on people to see how they enjoyed themselves etc...
Overall atmosphere - a little unfriendly.
