On a typical over-scheduled evening my 17yo son & i stopped in for a quick bite between practices. Clean & appropriately decorated, the young guy behind the counter was polite. The food was Fast-Tex-Mex with very fresh ingredients. By no means was this a lingering meal. For the price and time allotted, i was pleased. A great alternative to pizza or the local fast food joint. Fresh, simple, tasty & decently priced. Hopefully, the curse of previous failed businesses in this location has passed, A nice addition to N. Main Street.
Review Source:I have gone here quite a few times and while I really wanted to like it, I just can't order from/eat here anymore. Â While the food is ok (nothing great about it), the service is horrendous. Â The fact that it takes 30 min to get 2 burritos made up is ridiculous. Â And there have been many times that I have called in an order only to arrive there to pick it up and find out that they ran out of items (ie-cheese, pork, black beans)! Â How does a place with only a hand full of items on the menu run out of staples like I just mentioned. Â Sorry but I'll be searching for another "mom & pop" mex place.
Review Source:As the name implies, this small joint is probably run by a couple of gringos. So don't expect an authentic Mexican experience. But I will say the ingredients are fresh and quite tasty.
Being from California and spoiled by a number of great neighborhood burrito places, my standards are high, so this place may be closer to 4 stars. It's definitely the best burrito in the immediate area.
I think it's great that a small business person can take a concept like Baja Fresh or Qdoba put a unique name on it and open up on Main St. However that business person must not only take the concept, they have to take the standards and operating procedures too. We went there on a weekday evening. A couple walked in just ahead of us and there was only one kid working in the restaurant. This kid took the orders, made the meals and worked the cash register. In between he took phone orders. We stood around for 10 minutes before we even placed our order because the kid was preparing the food for the couple ahead of us. When I told him what we wanted I had had to say it three times because the kid could not concentrate on what I was saying. Even though I said it three times he managed to get one of our entrees wrong. As we were eating (on a wobbly table) I noticed he had a similar problem with another patron. The only reason I gave this place two stars was because the food was pretty good, but I felt the portions were small for the money. I also noticed that they keep the tortillas and taco shells on an open shelf near the floor. Perhaps they should rename the place Uno Gringo. Certainly this will be the uno and only time I go to this restaurant.
Review Source:Dos gringos is ok, just not great by any means. There hasn't been a good Mexcian restaurant in the area since Santa Fe (Nassau St Princeton) closed ten years ago. And as this isnt California I approach all Mexican food in the area understanding to judge accordingly.
The hard shells for the tacos are unusually good; it appears they are homemade like the tortilla chips. We had the chicken, steak and groud beef. The chicken was quite bland while the ground beef and steak were better.
I agree with a previous Yelper who pointed out there isnt a lot of taste so load up on some hot sauce. The vegetable toppings are abundant and include some unusual but welcome offerings.
Burrito was quite big although the rice was funky looking; tasted ok.
Mexican Mariachi in Ewing - by the ole GM plant - is slightly better and more authentic but Dos Gringos proximity to me will make me go back.
I had a mixed experience. I love to support little local places, and since this area lacks a Chipotle/Moe's/Qdoba, this seemed like a nice alternative. However, my burrito was overpriced ($8.50) for being not that great. They didn't have white rice, and the rice they had was hard from being undercooked. Plus sour cream and guac was like an extra dollar. We also got the nachoes which were actually really good, and my friend loved her quesidilla, which was a much better priced $6.50.
We had two people help us, one who made some mean comments and the other who was super nice. But the super nice one came up later and apologized for his rude coworker, so all was forgiven.
Cute atomosphere, though it could use outdoor seating for the summer!
The first time that I went to Dos Gringos, I had a chicken burrito. It was okay, but I must have been really hungry because today I went back and was not impressed at all. As I waited in line for 10 minutes, I noticed how much the girl behind the counter touched the food. Even though she was wearing gloves, it was still gross watching her pat down every ingredient she put into the burritos. As a germaphobe, I decided to go with the salad because I decided that there would be less of an opportunity for the girl to touch all of the ingredients. The salad was loaded with ingredients. I got it with chicken and cilantro lime dressing. When I got home five minutes later to eat it, it had turned an unattractive gray-ish color. It did not taste crispy or fresh. Despite all of the ingredients, I found it to be pretty tasteless. The tortilla shell that it was in tasted like it was soaked in grease. I looked forward to eating the tortilla chips and salsa, but the chips were burnt.
I will not make the Dos Gringos mistake again. Yes, you get a lot of food for the price. But who wants a lot of bad food? It just made me feel guilty as I threw 3/4 of it out.
I would honestly give my experience there 2 stars tops. Â I would like to see them stick around & improve, though! Â Therefore I'm giving it 3 stars with expectations of improvement...
It is a TEX-Mex, which to say, the spice mix is sweeter than if it was Mexican food. Â Texas has sweet b-b-q, therefore sweeter Mexican food. Â With that said, I found the food entirely bland. Â It was like that commercial where the customers compliment the restaurant on the their bland food - but happy there's a LOT of it for a great price! Â I felt similarly. Â I had a chicken burrito. Â It was stuffed to the max & looked divine. Â The rice had no taste other than spice... but no taste. Â The chicken had no taste whatsoever. Â Neither did the beans. Â The only thing I could taste were the impressive & endless variety of toppings... and yet even THEY seemed bland.
I tried the mild salsa. Â It was very sweet - not to my taste. Â The service was fine; the girls attending were neither friendly nor rude. Â The environment was cold & could use some warmth. Â I think of the Southwest & I think HEAT... so the owners need to warm up the place somehow. Â
the ONE amazing item in this place were the homemade tortilla chips!! Â Unlike anything I've ever had in my life! Â They don't need salsa, honestly, as they're seasoned already. Â They are AMAZING. Â Try the place for those, if nothing else.
I really hope they invest in some cilantro, chili powder & chiles. Â Wall hangings or painted Mexican wooden decorative items would help absorb echo & warm the place up. Â I will try the place again with different items - maybe the tacos - and a different salsa for sure.
Yummy venturing!
Only been here once but I'll be back! Â Guys behind the counter preparing the food and taking orders were very helpful and knowledgeable. Â Had the salad- large portion in a fried tortilla with a delicious honey chipotle dressing WITH a side of tortilla chips. Â Salad was very affordable- $6.99 for something that you would pay $10 for elsewhere.
Review Source:It was fine. Â The location should be good but has been the kiss of death to previous occupants. Â We have been there twice and I thought it was ok both times. Â The prices are reasonable and I like how they painted the walls. :)
Both times I was there, it was pretty empty and the service was ok. Â My kids liked the quesadillas and homemade chips. Â I like that it is local and will stop in for an occasional fix.
Rating: bueno.
