Two star ratings from me, only because I've had better vietnamese cuisine elsewhere.
Their dishes here are OKAY. I am in love with vietnamese food and I guess it did not meet my standards. However, their staff seems to be really nice. I wouldn't be able to give a better review as I only ordered for pick up.. Maybe I'll give it another try one day but not just yet.

    Happy eating =)

Great Pho, great price for lunch and dinner.  Friendly staff.  Don't have to go all the way to Argyle.

I love PHO and the reviews do not match up with the quality and service of this place.  i was very disappointed.  the price is on the high end of viet food and the portion they gave you is super duper tiny.  u get like 2 pieces of beef in the pho and they are super skeet sauce with the basil and veggies.   i definitely had better.  :( :(

    Pros:
    - Service is pretty good, not like most pho joints.
    - Pho is decent, the broth is tasty and light.
    - Ca Kho Tho was delicious and tasted just like my mom's cooking. Comes in a clay pot, saucy, and just the right spice.
    - Any of the curry dishes are perfection.
    - Coconut boba was fresh and tasty.

    Cons:
    - Parking
    - Only one size of pho which is either too much for me or too little for my roommate.
    - Some dishes take longer than others so instead of timing them right in the kitchen, some people will receive their dishes a lot sooner than others.
    - Egg rolls are bleh. The texture is odd. It's as if they take all the filling ingredients and blend them, then fry them, yuck.
    - Canh chua ca definitely lacks any kind of flavor and the salmon is dry! In a soup?!

Only place in the burbs, so I'll be back and stick to what I like.

Only been here twice. Each time it satisfied my need for pho.  After you have been to Argyle, its so hard not to be snobby with other viet restaurants.

The food came out quick. The broth was bland and i think i had like 3pieces of meat in my pho.. total. The appetizer came out after the pho was delivered and the basil/beansprout plate trailed a few minutes after we began eating..

I will come here as a last resort fix, but i think id rather take the extra 30min drive in the opposite direction to get some full flavored soup.

    Not bad.

They offer the standard Pho fare you'd fine at most Vietnamese noodle shops and the prices are good.

The food is pretty mediocre though.  The Pho broth left much to be desired and almost everything needed some sort of extra seasoning.

Cute atmosphere; food in general is ok. Had a bad service experience: fried rice was listed on the menu as being a part of the lunch special but they charged me $7.95 for it and rather then accepting the mistake the owner argued  with us. It will be a while before we go back.

My first time eating Vietnamese food!

I've been missing out! This place is delicious! I had their Pho (broth, noodles made of rice, few herbs and meat) and Shrimp Spring Rolls. The Pho was absolutely delicious! A friend of mine recommended that I have the Pho with beef raw on the side...then add hoisin and sriracha sauce. I did exactly this and it was absolutely scrumptious! The Pho was also served with bean sprouts and basil.

The spring rolls are a perfect finger food. The rolls are wrapped in this rice paper which is a little chewy and peanut dipping sauce.

A side note... I had an extremely difficult time using the large plastic chopsticks :( But, on the plus side they did serve it with a soupspoon

I stopped on in for lunch recently and this place was okay. The restaurant can get cold because there isn't a vestibule to diffuse the air, especially when it's -10000 degrees out.

It took a really long time to get even the menu (by really long, I mean like 5+ minutes) when it should be the first thing you get upon being seated. I ordered the #10 special (Bun thit heo nuong... Marinated pork grilled rice noodles, lettuce, shredded carrots, cucumber, special sauce). They could have been a little more generous with the meat portion, but I understand it was their lunch special so the portion is lighter. It tasted good. Meal also came with a side soup (chicken broth). What I did like was that they also have smoothies/boba here. I tried the avocado (with tapioca) and it was fine - was hoping it would've been a little bit sweeter but can't complain.

The restaurant is a really no frills joint, so don't expect a whole lot of pizzazz and ambiance.

For friendly service and reliably delicious, authentic Vietnamese, I visit this restaurant at least twice a week for lunch and/or dinner. I have literally tasted 40-50 menu items and even some special off-menu items (thanks Tran family). I am always impressed with the quality, consistent portions, accommodating preparation and bold flavors. Take your friends and family and I promise you'll make this place a regular stop.

Ordered shrimp spring rolls($3.50). They were nice, fresh and had a hint of mint! Lovely.

I ordered the PHO BO TAI CHIN ($7.95)  beef tenderloin noodle pho. It was good!
My fiance ordered the PHO DAC BIET ($8.50) sans the tripe and tendon (gross, not going there!)

Prices are reasonable and totally on par with other Vietnamese places. I've had pho in 3 major cities now. (Linda N please check prices before you order, not complain  on yelp AFTER! If you want beef broth, open a carton from the grocery store!)

Both bowls came with PLENTY of broth, noodles and meat.
The usual plate of sprouts, jalapeno, lime and thai basil were fresh, clean and tasty!

Everything was great, until......que Jaws music here.......my fiance pulled a Hersey's Kiss paper from his SOUP!  Now granted it's a week before Valentine's day, I didn't put the Kiss paper in his soup so it shouldn't be there! :)

Did it effect the flavor? no
Did it make us wonder about kitchen practices? Hell yes!

Unlike another reviewer who said they didn't handle kitchen mishaps well, the Vietnamese person we notified was VERY apologetic and didn't charge us for the soup.

Overall, it was good. I think we might go again.

They would get a 5 rating if they clean the hoisin (which says refrigerate after opening, btw) AND if honey didn't get the Hersey's Kiss - or maybe if they gave him a Hersey's Kiss! lol

I preface this by saying this was my FIRST visit for Vietnamese food.

On a particularly cold winter evening, I had a taste for beef broth.  Decided to finally give this place a try on my way home from work.

I ordered #34 PHO BO TAI CHIN at the urging of staff after I said I wanted bare basic beef broth. I was a bit taken aback when I was charged $8.80 for my to go order.  (I didnt look at menu, just told the guy what I wanted, so I expected to pay $5 or $6.

After splitting my noodles into my bowl of broth (shoved so deep down into to go container wasnt sure they would unfurl), and putting in a bit of the spice container paste (not hot as requested). I would have been better off with a can of broth for an eigth the price.

I dont eat hot or spicy so and enjoyed the quasi- sweet floral fragrance (lemongrass?) of the paste put into the broth, but the pale strips of beef, were really unappetizing. Appreciated sprouts and other accoutrement kept separate from broth until you are ready to mix yourself.

I guess my being a newbie to this cuisine doesn't fault the restaurant, though for my tastes, I don't think I would try again.

    pho
soup potion is not big enough to heat noodle. so it became a lukewarm noodle soup. well noodle it self  is not enough either. they need to know why 'Tank noodle' put that much soup in to noodle bowl.  more MSG less spice less beef. 8$ is joke.

    fried rice
this looks joke. you have to see...

    egg roll.
surprised to see dark really dark brown sticks. well I thought "maybe not because of the oil color." and I touched with napkin then I can see dark brown oil on the napkin. OMG Yes it is because of the dark oil color!!!  they using black oil from a month(I guess)  use. you can try this and that. but don't try anything with oil.

Pho Special was.... not so much. Half a meatball, a few strands of tripe, and a few sheets of overcooked beef, with a clump of noodles underneath, in a tepid bowl of what tasted like Maruchan noodle broth.  Didnt get sprouts, basil, chilis or anything thats usually standard. $8.50?  Really??!!?  Received the tea that the table one over had ordered, which made them cranky.
Now, I luv me some pho, but this just made me sad...
    Boooo!

I ate here a couple of times; nothing special, but bonus points for being a Vietnamese restaurant within a short drive.  The lunch specials were decent.  I should have listened to the other bad bubble smoothie review; I thought, how bad could a bubble smoothie really be?  Well, it was awful.  I've had bubble tea/smoothies at dozens of places and never tasted anything as nasty as theirs.  It tasted like they made it with rotten fruit and I couldn't drink it.  How can they accomplish this awfulness consistently?

It seems to me that I've been missing out on some damn good pho close to where I live for a long time.  All those times I've been driving out to Argyle to get some pho, I could've just drove 10 minutes and gotten the same thing.

They don't really have the 100+ items on their menu like Tank Noodles or Pho 777 but their pho is not only on point, it's freaking delicious.  You know that soothing broth that can calm your stomach down, makes your headache go away and clear your sinuses?  Yes my fellow skillets and homies.  This will do that job.  And I love how they load up on the sprouts!  They are little skimpy on the thai basil but all you have to do is ask for little more.  No problemo!

And for spring rolls, I've tried both shrimp and the beef.  You can't really go wrong with that right?  But then again, Dung Gia uses marinated beef which enhances a dull flavor of spring rolls.  I know you are supposed to use peanut sauce but what if I was allergic to peanuts?  What?  Use Sriracha or Hoison?  What if i can't handle the spiciness or the sweetness?  Personally, if you can't handle none of the above, what the hell are you doing at a Vietnamese restaurant?  But if you still demand to go eat spring rolls at Dung Gia, that marinated beef adds flavor to a rather dull tasting spring rolls.

Anyhow, this place has really good pho.  Broth is clean tasting and soothing.  Something you will definitely need when you are hung over, and freezing in winter.  I'm sure I will frequent this place more!  Better yet, I might even go today.  I've been there last 2 days for pho!

Parking is pretty easy.  If the street is full, you can always park at the metra parking across the street.

I keep trying to like Dung Gia since my group of friends seem to be a fan of this place. We've come on multiple occasions for lunch specials and dinner. I've had better pho at places on Argyle and the tofu with vermicelli was only meh. Also, service has been slow at times and they've made some mistakes on my friends' orders.

However, it's not all bad. The lunch specials are well priced and some of my dining companions enjoy their curry. Maybe I just haven't found my signature dish here, but I'm a little less than enthused to try to figure out what it is.

Not sure if they changed owners or Chefs since the last time i was here... the Pho was nothing more than glorified chicken broth. Barely any of the meat choices that were supposed to come in the Special, no tendon. Two sprigs of Basil for two bowls of Pho?!? Many places mix chicken broth w/their beef broth but you should still predominantly taste beef or the different Pho Spices.

Really unfortunate because i can no longer recommend this place as i did before. I used to tell everyone that it was as close to my mom's as i've ever had in a restaurant.

Just moved from California to Chicago 3 months ago, been to some Viet restaurants in Argyle area and couldn't find any restaurant that made me as happy as Dung Gia did.

I've only been there once, happened to order Bun Rieu Tom, one of the best Bun Rieu I ever had!!! Very tasty and lots of crab meat, with salty shrimp paste, yummm!!!  Try it and you won't regret it.
Definitely wIll be back for Bun Rieu again.

i'm a huge fan of Pho and out of all the places that i went to in Chicago, this is the best place so far.  They have the best authentic pho broth i ever tasted so far and also, try their appetizer Vietnamese pancake, this is the one of my favorites from here.  One of the main reason why I have become their frequent customers is they have excellent service.  There's only one thing that concerns me when I go there, parking can be hectic some times if you go during lunch or dinner time.   If you like pho, try this place out.

Service was done by a dude. He was ok. Not too friendly or not too rude. They brought out basil leaves with lots of black spots, so we asked for new ones. Bad start. Portion of pho was ok. Fried rice
was bad. Not a great experience here comparing to pho ha on Glendale Hts or Tank Pho in Chicago.

We love pho and all kinds of asian food. Since we just moved out of the city we decided to see what was around us to check out. We came here on a Friday night around 830pm. The place had several people in it so it seemed pretty busy. The service was somewhat ok. The guy took our order but my boyfriends bubble tea took like 30 mins to come out! The spring roles and pho came out before the bubble tea! As far as how the food tastes, we've had better. The spring rolls were not that great... I mean we do have high standards and compared to like Joy-Yee's in the city, or the places off Argyle. The pho was like chicken noodle soup. It didn't have lemon grass in it like some of the variations ive tried, also they are stingy on the "green fixin's" that go with it. Also we got a beef and noodle dish that wasn't very flaverfull either. We probably won't go back.

Out of the suburbs I've tried the Pho place in Oak Park that came the closest to what you would get in the city. So it's almost worth the drive downtown for some quality Asian food.

I went here so often that the server knows me. I'm the Asian girl with the Blackhawks baseball cap that always orders the Pho Special with extra meat. I call them so much that they recognize my phone number as I always order it to go.

Their broth is delicious. The meat is good, I like mine with more meat so for a couple bucks more I ask for extra meat. I like their chicken spring rolls, very good.

They are down the street from where I live so when the weather gets cold I always stop by to pick up some Pho to go. They're always fast and the quality is always there. I highly recommend.

Let me preface this by saying I'm not a huge fan of pho (travesty, I know).  The pho here was pretty standard, tasted like the pho I've had at many other places.  Maybe I've just been fortunate enough to not have eaten bad pho or maybe I just can't tell the difference, but the pho here didn't really stand out.  Service was very friendly.   One hiccup though, we did have to ask the server for the bean sprouts & herbs a few minutes after we got the pho.  I'm used to them bringing it out with, or even before the pho gets to the table so we waited a little expecting them to bring it before we asked.  Living so close to Chicago, I'm not sure I'd travel all the way out to Des Plaines just for this place's pho, but if I was in the area I'd come back.

went there for the first time today. nice, clean place on Miner st in Downtown Des Plaines.  Very authentic Viet food. had the shrimp spring rolls. crunchy and full of noodles, shrimp and mint with peanut dipping sauce. my wife had the chicken salad which is chock a block with veggies, onions and very refreshing. I had the Shrimp papaya salad which is beautiful and has lots of shrimp, onions, green papaya and cilantro. very tasty. I took home the Pho ga(chicken) which is excellent and the mixed fried rice which is light and not greasy. has big shrimp in it and wonderful flavors of lemongrass.  a great place to dine or have lunch. highly recommended.

The Pho is good here. Many places uses MSG in their Pho but not this place. However, the prices were high and not much noodles or meat. But it's still good. I don't like the metal soup spoons, most places give out plastic ones. Egg rolls were so-so, not great. As for parking, its free for street but hard to find parking in front. But you can park in the residential area. Plenty of parking there.

A lot of Pho reviews out there will have mixed reviews. I say try this place out and see for yourself. Every restaurant will have a bad review. It's up to you the customer whether to eat here or not.

I ate at Dung Gia with my fiancee on June 6th and was quite pleased. We were one of the first lunch customers (11AM) and we arrived to find the waiter and a cook eating hefty bowls of steaming pho at a table.  The waiter immediately greeted us and offered us any table, then filled our glasses with ice water and supplied us with menus.  There are a number of lunch specials besides the pho, such as curries, vermicelli noodle dishes, satays, salads, etc. I was there for the pho though.  We ordered a bowl of rare/well-done beef pho and a beef curry with the anticipation of sharing them both.

Lunch specials are served with a soup, which was a unique chicken broth seasoned with fresh greens onions, cilantro, basil, and a bit of sesame oil.  Good flavor, and most importantly, obviously not canned.  There was some essence of chicken breast in the broth as well.  Nothing too special, but it did have a unique flavor.  By the time we slurped that down (8-10 mins), our food arrived.

The pho is served in the traditional large bowl with a plate of herbs/garnish/sprouts to place into the soup to cook and "simmer."  Our plate came with fresh mint, bean sprouts, cilantro, jalapeno, and two large lime wedges. Again - standard pho serving style.  This is where my first deduction occurred (I give a restaurant 5 stars to lose, maybe I'm too nice).  Jalapenos aren't served in indochina.  They have plenty of better and more potent (and smaller) options.  For example, at the Mexican grocer down the street from me, Thai chilis are on sale year-round for $4.00 a pound.  A pound of those would last that restaurant a day.  So, your margin goes down, but your authenticity goes up.

The curry serving came with a bowl of steamed white rice, and although a little lacking in quantity, it had great flavor and blended the coconut milk and savory spiciness well.  Let me state that although curries can and in my opinion SHOULD be hot to the taste, this curry was not. Just well seasoned with just enough meat (a little more wouldn't have hurt).   This curry was a lunch special at $6.95, a price which definitely validates the portion.

We decided to pass on dessert as this was a short lunch, but ordered a vietnamese-style iced coffee instead.  This is where another deduction will occur.
Traditionally, the coffee will be served at the table into a french drip filter that is dripping into a glass of sweetened-condensed milk. The mixture is then poured over ice. Dung Gia, I'm guessing, in the interest of time and dishes, just brings coffee poured over ice & sweetened condensed milk to your table.  It tasted very American.  Like Dunkin Donuts coffee.  As a customer, I think the experience would be more authentic to see the coffee dripping through the colonial french filter and smell the process and such and such.

Regardless, we are in the midwest. Dung Gia efficiently and quickly provides an above average Vietnamese dining experience and does so on a very affordable budget.

Okay, let me be candid. Danang and Ho Chi Minh City wasn't exactly on my 2011 travel itinerary. I can't tell you, how authentic these broths are. I can't assuage your concerns that you might not be getting pho like in the back country.

Here's what i'm gonna tell you.

You go in to this diner, you're going to get a spectacular Vietnamese dining experience. You order the pho. Your going to get a great base of noodle and a small plate topped with variety of add-ons such as Jalapenos, mint and sprouts. You want adventure--go ahead--throw it all in there.

It's a big bowl too. So while you let your fine spices co-mingle, you can sit down with your compadres, discuss the fine things in life like the Bears, summer-grill outs, and Sears power tools. All while your meal stays warm and fresh. Add some of those airy spring rolls to the meal, and you're going to walk out of this place feeling like a champ.

    Pho.nomenal.
    Un.Pho.gettable.

I was introduced to Pho about a year ago. Since then it has been a weekly ritual at a hole in the wall near my home. No joke. The highlight of my week is "Pho Friday". However, finding a great little spot near the office for lunch had been somewhat challenging...until I discovered Dung Gia. At first the menu is slightly overwhelming. It's HUGE. I stuck to my tried and true items. The Goi Cuon and peanut sauce (Vietnamese spring rolls - with tofu) were delish! As a non-seaftood eater, it was nice to see a variety of spring rolls...without shrimp! I also indulged in a large bowl of beef Pho. The beef and the noodles were perfect,  and the broth was extremely flavorful. I loaded my bowl with jalapeno and basil and chowed down.

The waitstaff was friendly. The service was fast. The food was fantastic. Will I be back??? Pho Sho!

Before yesterday, I had never actually been to the Des Plaines area, only driven through, and I was pleasantly surprised when my friend suggested getting pho together. The whole area is super cute, albeit a little too quiet. I'd definitely like to come back and explore a bit more.

But anyway, onto Dung Gia itself. The free parking right outside was a nice bonus. I ordered the specialty noodle soup, which were pretty much like your usual pho order with the rice noodles, a variety of meats, and bean sprouts and other vegetables on the side. I found myself greatly enjoying the noodles themselves. Sometimes noodles can be too soggy and overdone, but Dung Gia's noodles were the perfect texture and elasticity. With that being said, I thought that the meat that came with the noodles was a bit sad in terms of the amount and the taste. Otherwise, the wait staff was relatively friendly and attentive. Overall decent. I'd probably come back if I were in the area again and craving pho!

Oh man.  What happened.  3 for 3.  3 out of 3 dishes were way salty.  Someone had the very heavy soy sauce hand, I must say.

When you finish a dish with a dash of soy, that's usually not a good sign.  When you push through your noodles and there's a pool of soy sauce at the bottom of the dish, that's Asian cooking Chop Suey style.  Americanized version of noodles.  That's a no-no.

We wanted to like it.  The decor was so beautifully welcoming.  I could imagine and see myself eating in a similarly decorated spot in Saigon.  Soft drapes, thin bamboo curtains laced the window, soft leaf green on the walls, comfy...wonderful.

I refuse to believe that I should not come back and try it again.  There's way too much on the menu to just not come back.  If and when I do, I'll report if the heavy hand (sooo unlike Vietnamese food) is more a one-off.  I so hope it is.

We spent too much for too much salty.  Shakes head.

The two of us were pleasantly surprised that Vietnamese food can be sooo good in comparison to what we ate in places like Saigon, Dalat, and Hoi An. We have returned to Dung Gia for the better-than-authentic cuisine and will continue to do so. We've ordered from the dinner menu as well as the lunch specials menu. Appetizers, Spring Roll and Spring Roll Beef, are fresh, served with perfect annam sauce. We can vouch for the Beef Sate, Curry Chicken, and vegetarian "pan fried flat large rice noodles;" ohhh the noodles. Quantities are generous and tastes are delicious.
It's our kind of place; comfortable, friendly, inexpensive, good value; our new favorite café in Des Plaines.

I think the food here is good. The service is so bad though that I couldn't tolerate another meal here. The staff speaks very poor english and this was extremely difficult when ordering. They are also extremely unfreindly.

When they took our order we were also placing a to go order for another family member and they just gave a blank stare and were nodding when we said this. When a different person was cleaning up our plates we asked if they were preparing our to go meal...he looked like a deer in the head lights...came back with the owner and then they started cooking...The fun didn't stop after that. The bill was added up incorrectly 3 times and I had to show them how to add up the  total. I love vietnamese food, but the service and inpolite staff aren't worth the hassle here. Go downtown to Tank noodle or to china town to Cafe Hoang for better Vietnamese if you can.

    Dung Gia,

You let me down on my last visit. Sure you expanded your restaurant and doubled your table tops and yes you still have great menu prices. But all of that doesn't mean much if you can't get the orders out in a timely manner and all at once. Yes we had a relatively big party, about 8, but we waited forever just to put our orders in, followed by a long wait just to get few people at our table served. And then I watched as half the table enjoyed their food. What a shame. All that good food for nothing. It was such a horrible service that we probably won't come here ever again.

Time line for this meal was 2.5 hours beginning to end.

I love this place. I love to support small businesses in DP because it seems like it's hard to survive as one in the city. Dung Gia doesn't disappoint, in several fronts.

It's really cute and cozy inside and service is very polite. It seems like a family-run restaurant. The food itself is excellent and presented surprisingly well. It's also very affordable.

I hope they do well and from the reviews it sounds like they are! Also: BYOB.

This place is run by the people who had Annam Cafe in Evanston. I sure do miss that restaurant, so every once in a while I'll drive to Des Plaines to go to Dung Gia.

The food is very fresh and delicious. My dining companion loves their TOM RANG TOI SATE (Jumbo shrimps cooked with pineapple, onions, tomato and spicy sauce). I had the Bun Tofu and the Tofu Spring Rolls.  Very tasty!

I'm happy that they seem to be doing well in their current location.

This is a VERY small place with only about 7 tables.  Luckily we caught then during their down time.  The service was good and fast which was good because once again the natives (our kids) were restless.  The items were ordered by numbers and included appetizers, traditional Vietnamese dishes, vegetarian dishes, noodles, fried rice, specialty of the house, and beverages.

Our appetizer was great.  The kids ate it all up.  (#13, Banh Xeo - crepe with shrimp, chicken, bean sprouts served with lettuce, cucumbers, cilantro and special sauce.)

We ordered four different items for dinner.  I ate all of mine as I adore tofu so my husband only got to taste it.  The sauce was the perfect mix of sweet and hot.  (#42, Ca Tim Dau Hu Xoa Si Dau - eggplant and tofu with garlic soysauce.)

My daughter asked for noodles but only ate the tofu.  After a bit of coxing she ate some of the noodles but asked if she could have more tofu and less noodles next time.  (#50, Mi Xao Dau Hu Hay Tom Hay Ga Hay Bo - egg noodles with a choice of shrimp, chicken, beef, tofu or vegetables with bean sprouts and onions.)

My son ordered fried rice but ended up eating my steamed rice.  If I had room I would have ate this too.  The sausage reminded something but I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was good.  (#51, Com Tay Cam - traditional Vietnamese fried rice in a clay pot with chicken, Vietnamese sausage, ginger root, and shitake mushrooms.)

My husband is notorious for ordering the hottest thing on the menu and this dish was no different.  He lured me in by saying the beef had a hint of lime then you taste the spices.  I however tasted nothing but hot and then proceeded to get heartburn an hour later.  (#61, Bo Tuong Cay - marinated beef cooked with bell peppers, onion and spicy sauce.)

In all we had a good experience and would definitely try it again.  Besides they have five other tofu dishes for me to try.
