Not the first time this has happened. Â The place goes through flash rushes of customers and isn't prepared with enough staff. Â The problem is that they don't tell customers "hey we're probably too busy to give good service." Â In with my family, ordered an appetizer that took 20 minutes...and was ice cold when it was served.
It might be OK if you are just looking for a beer, but it's not good for any party over 2. Â One Sunday morning they had a "late opening" because there was no manager and the cook apparently was coming off a bender. Â It was chaos.
If you're thinking that this location is anything like the original on Broadway, you will be very disappointed.
street parking only- and GET the nuclear wings!!! sooo delicious!
There are 2 tables to host larger group (~8-10 people), they are always 'reserved' and at least half of the group must be present before being able to take the table.. we learned the hard way.. Â this place does get crowded for some sporting games- get there a little earlier.
Had the best meal in a long time; got the Gorgonzola fries on recommendation, so worth it! Fish and chips were excellent, not greasy, came with a salad. Hubby had the pastrami burger, flavorful, juicy and filling. And someone came around with a free sample of beer! What's not to like? I would definitely go back.
Review Source:I've been coming to EJ's (E J Malloy's) for years now, and even though I live 30 miles away now, I make it a point to stop by when I'm in the area.
The décor is great and they have two entrances to their establishment, both front and rear.  TIP - there is limited paring in the rear, but it fills up quick.
They have weekly and daily beer specials, and you can't go wrong with their selection of wings. Â Their prices are a little higher than most of the bars in the area, but the value for the quality of food you receive, is on par.
If you enjoy a nice Black and Tan, and want to get your money's worth from some good quality wings, then by all means, slip on in for a treat.
Enjoy
My husband and I have been eating here since they opened. The staff are great and food is good which is why we keep going back. I like the salads and their fish and chips are yummy. The downside is mostly on the customer-side, they can be a little loud and rude depending on the time of day. Some folks like to let everyone know they are in the bar even if you don't want to know. Â Breakfast on the weekends are really good and filling.
Review Source:People talk about having a bad experience here....I have yet to have a good experience. The food has been absolutely terrible EVERY TIME. I understand its pub food but seriously? Gross.
I've tried multiple sandwiches, fries, potatoes salad, pasta salad, chicken strips....everything tastes like some wiped it with a dirty rag. Today was the last chance I'm giving Malloys...our relationship is officially over.
The food here is pretty good, I usually get the corned beef...
I wish I could give them more stars BUT..
The kitchen here is beyond slow, the waitress is reasonably pleasant although it's a hassle trying to split a check.. Although they pour very generously so it kinda makes up for it!
Parking is scarce during busy hours but they do take reservations!
I usually go here on 1st Friday so the place is generally packed. You've got to stand and wait for space at the bar and that means you're right in the way of the waitstaff. Sorry folks!
Nice selection of beers, decent crowd, like the gal who performs on certain Fridays. It's generally a local crowd.
If you persevere and give the lingerers the stink-eye you'll get a bar stool.
Now about the food.... Fish and chips, okay... some kind of tri-tip salad, not bad. Decent but generally not stellar.
And for the wait, the bar service could be zippier too - although they are really friendly. It's just damn busy!
Gone back to EJ Malloy's a couple of times for some food and beer and the service was great. The bartender and waiters/waitresses so far have treated us very well and have been very attentive.
The food is pretty typical pub fare though their specials are pretty good. We had the buffalo chicken salad during our last visit and the vegetables were put together nicely and the buffalo chicken was really good.
They have a good selection of beer too.
So far, I haven't been disappointed by them and I will probably visit more in the future. It's a nice and quiet bar to have a casual hang out at.
This is a pleasant bar/restaurant. The few times I have been here, it has been crowded with a beer crowd watching sports on TV. The food is o.k., we had pastrami, chicken wings and salad. They were good, not something special, but what do you expect in a sports bar? I have read complaints about the staff, but I have never seen it. I have found them friendly and professional...It's a friendly neighborhood place, not the Ritz.
Appreciate it for what it is..
If I could give NO STARS, I would. Â Using a Living Social Voucher here was not only dissatisfying, confusing, frustrating, & a pain in the royal keister, but the wait staff were deplorably rude, ignorant, stubborn, & checked on us ONCE throughout the entire meal! Â :-(
Simply arriving and attempting to use 2 different vouchers for 2 different parties at 2 different tables caused an argument, intransigence on the part of the server, and her insistence that we HAD to be one party, instead of the original purchaser and a "gifted voucher" recipient. Â The server tried to foist off the whole situation on "the rules", the security cameras in the restaurant, & the fact that she had "tried to accept more than one voucher when they were first issued and she got in trouble" from management. Â Excuses, blaming, lack of creativity, lack of customer service skills, & ignoring our table for almost 50 minutes all lead to the 1-star review.
The food was OK/Average for pub fare--child's Chicken Strips and FF couldn't go wrong. Â Chili Burger w/ FF was fine as well. Â And so was Cajun Chicken Philly sandwich - albeit more greasy than necessary. Â It was the veggie burger - served with a large top-portion of tomato slice that still retained it's inedible, brown, fibrous core that was a major turn-off to the owner of the Living Social Voucher! Â All attempts to see if the server would check on us so that we could get it replaced, remove the sandwich from our order, or have the entire thing replaced, just went out the window...since she dropped off food and didn't return for 20 minutes - to start clearing off other diner's plates!
(No supervisors or managers were on hand that night. Â No one else attempted to come over and smooth things out. Â Our table received slit-eyed dagger stares from the server--when she chose to even look our way, which was far and in-between.) Â The busser was friendly and willing to refill waters, checked-up on us at least 3 times - before the food arrived, right after, and to clear away dishes. Â HE received a tip directly from us. Â The server - didn't earn her tip, didn't SERVE us, and DEFINITELY influenced us to NEVER return to this location.
The lack of supervisors/managers present on a Saturday night (allowing the "mice to play while the cats were away"!) also didn't leave us sitting well with the knowledge that the business was being run the right way - Customers First!
E.J. Malloy's - get your staff trained to SERVE the customer, creatively resolve issues, and drop their attitudes at the door. Â Otherwise, you're just another greasy pub with lousy waitstaff and a plummeting reputation.
P.S. Â Tell your waitstaff to ask customers WHICH location their Living Social Vouchers applied to FIRST, before bellyaching, blaming managers and others-not-present, and just generally being whiny workers. Â (This may have easily stemmed the tide of the ignoring server, the horrid attitude, and the lack of service or food quality!)
The first time I went to this bar I had a great experience. Â Despite it being crowded due to the "First Friday" event, we were seated fairly quickly and had good service.
The second time I went, a few weeks later, it was the total opposite. Â It wasn't crowded at all and my boyfriend and I sat at the table nearest the entrance. Â Their was waitress at the table next to us. Â She was having a conversation with the people at the table. Â We waited almost 10 minutes and she never acknowledged us. Â So my boyfriend went to the bar to get us some beers. Â The bartender, a skinny white guy in a hat, didn't acknowledge him either. Â After about five minutes, I walked up to the bar and said, "excuse me." Â Even though I said it loud enough for him to hear me, I was ignored as well. Â The guy pretty much gave me his back as he played with the money in the cash register. Â I waited about 5 minutes and then we walked out.
I wonder if they pick and choose who they will be assholes to...I'll miss their garlic fries, but not their service.
If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! Ok, minus 2 because they close at 12am!
My hubby and I primarily go there for the late night happy hour which is everyday! I mean the happy hour is, not how often we go, although we go there often.
The wings are soooo good, we each order a plate for us *10 wings, happy hour size for 4.75*
They have several tvs playing every game going on.
E.J. Malloy's was my favorite sports bar to hit when we wanted to catch a football or basketball game in a great environment. The waitstaff is very friendly and accommodating, if a little slow when the place gets full. Burger and beer specials on Monday nights made it all the better. Their buffalo wings are some of my favorite wings around.
I personally loved the idea of giving our raffle tickets for each drink ordered during a prime-time game. I never won anything but the cheap thrill of winning a T-shirt or a gift cert was all the incentive I needed to order another round of beers, especially when they were the $2 domestics with the Monday burger special!
I've haven't stopped by in a while with the football season over and my usual buddy relocating but I'm looking for a good excuse to get back there soon!
We come here every so often to watch football, have some beers and some grub....unfortunately the past few times have been a real bummer. Â The food is just not good, and seems to have gone downhill the past few years. Â Also, I think they need to clean their taps, the beer has the same distinctive "dirty tap" taste. :-( Â It always smells like cleaning solution in there, not something pleasant while you're trying to eat.
I am not sure if the EJ's is under the same ownership as the one on Broadway/Redondo but that one seems to be much better in food quality, cleanliness and beer selection (love all the new IPA's in the fridge). Â
Anyhow, will probably just stick to the Broadway/Redondo location for now.
I like this place for multiple reasons...
We love coming here to watch football, have a couple of beers and enjoy their delicious food!
Favorite dishes, their calamari are great! (not too overly fried)...
Their hot pastrami is fantastic.
The cajun fajita sandwich is my ultimate favorite.
And of course, we can't forget the tri tip sandwich!
Pair all of this with their great pasta salad, a blue moon and bam!
Love it
I would go to this place to enjoy some Maker's while watching a game, but I don't think I would eat here again. I've been disappointed with each meal--burger was dry and all mayo, Gorgonzola fries were sad and soggy, sandwich was too oily and the beef was dry. I may have enjoyed the potato salad, which was more mustard than mayo.
Wait: I've never had to wait for a seat to open up, but also have never been here for a big game. The food wait is comparable to some other bars in Long Beach like the Auld or Gallagher's.
Place: Self-seating. No private parking lot, just plenty of street parking.
Notables: Flat screen TVs are located all over the bar, but the best vantage point is at the actual bar. Alsace Lorraine Bakery is within walking distance and there's a Cold Stone in the plaza across the street.
EJ's, you only get three stars until you start staying open later. Â This little pub is really the only decent option for drinks wihtin walking distance from my house, tucked into sleepy old Bixby Knolls. Â Always clean and friendly/fast service, The patio is a great place to hang out while people watching/car watching. Â I don't think I've ever had a bad experience here. And don't underestimate the food, some of the best fish and chips in town. Â Also, gorgonzola fries! Â
I occasionally see other younger folks here and I wish more of us would enjoy a local pub instead of making the trek to Downtown or 2nd Street. Â I could use a good hangout place within stumbling distance that doesn't close at like, 10pm. Â On a Saturday. Â So lets rally and support EJ's at night, folks!
Last fun fact: this is where the Bixby Trader Joe's workers go after work. Â So if you enjoy an attractive TJ employee (as I do) here's your chance:)
NEVER AGAIN will my family visit EJ Malloy's in the Bixby area. We will NEVER refer our relatives, friends and other tourists to that business in the future
Last Monday night my wife and kids got home a little late, around 1/2 time of the game, so i decided to get them out of the hot house and take them to eat out. The place was relatively busy but NOT PACKED. There were Lots of single and double seats around but only one table with room for 4 or more.
That table had a reserved sign on it. As the 3rd quarter was starting and it was getting late, I asked the waitress if the table was still reserved....She told me YES that it was reserved for parties of 5 or more and we only had 4. Not reserved specifically for any group but just in case a group came in. Â I asked again saying, the game is 1/2 over and nobody is sitting there, can we sit there? She was very serious when she said NO we don't have 5 people in our party.
Naturally we walked out without spending a penny there. I wonder if they would have liked our $$ (dinner for 4 plus wine and beer for the adults).
WE WILL NEVER BE BACK!!
8/8/2011 update
Is there a way to make this 0 stars? Â still haven't been back since last year and i don't miss it a bit!
Things I like about this EJ Malloys:
Happy Hour menu (half off appetizers, $3 Domestic Draft, $4 Imported and $1 off well drinks).
Specials on food and drinks every night of the week.
Hot Wings and TV's!
In Bixby Knolls (Close by the crib)......
Things I hate about this EJ Malloys:
Music (cool if you are in the 50 and over club).
Parking: Not very good.
In Bixby Knolls (not the most fun city or crowd of people, unless you like talking to Golden Girls about their dog.).
Watched the Superbowl here! This is a good option to watch a sports game - there is a tv in every corner. The bar itself it very nice, however, they do lack a lot of drink options for being labeled  a "Pub." I wish that they carried Irish Beer/Cider options and Belgium beer besides Blue Moon.
The gongorzola fries are cheesy goodness. Yum! I could eat entire plate myself. The burgers here are good but not spectacular. This is a great option if you live near Bixby Knolls.
Too bad there's no functionality for half-star, as EJs really deserves 3.5-stars.
I was running errands and felt like a patty melt for lunch. EJs was on the way, it's midweek in the afternoon, so the notoriously-bad parking on Atlantic shouldn't be an issue.
You don't see too many copper-topped tables anymore and it really makes for a nice touch. All the wood furniture and brass do add a touch of class. Being a former bar back, I appreciated the way they set up their bar and the place was spotless.
So why only 3.5 stars?
The bar stools and bar itself don't really make for a comfortable dining experience. It'd be fine if you're with the guys/girls having a few drinks and watching the game(s), but the stools are a bit high, the bar's a bit low, so you're hunched over trying to eat...not fun. I moved myself to a nearby table (place wasn't crowded at all); it was a little higher, but I wasn't 100% comfortable. Eh, I'm must be one of those egronomically-challenged types.
Patty melt was fine; nominal wait time and service was acceptable. Yes, the gorgonzola fries are the bomb...I think every other Yelper can attest to that. Patty melt, fries and drink came out to $15.24, sans tip. Now, you are paying for the ambiance but you can probably get a patty melt just as good at Babe's, Pete's or Dave's Burgers for half that. Course, you're not getting the aforementioned gorgonzola fries.
Overall, place is fine, great atmosphere, just 1.5-2 star deductions for ergonomics and parking. I don't know if the patina on the copper is supposed to be a fashion statement, but it wouldn't hurt to polish once in a while. Doesn't need to be spotless, just hit it with an orbital buffer.
"Teej, we have to go to E.J. Malloy's when you're back in town!" Lori F. shouted to me over the phone.
"Uh, why?" I asked.
"BURGER MADNESS!" she thundered into the receiver before whispering, "see you there" and promptly hung up.
Well how could resist?
E J Malloy's is a small chain in Long Beach, and I'd not been to the Atlantic location, so I figured it'd be worth a shot.
After finagling some difficult parking, I met Lori and walked in, eager for this aforementioned burger madness.
Now you see, on Mondays EJM apparently offers a fantastic deal: Burger, Cajun fries, and a draft domestic beer for $8.95. Â Holy shit. Â That sound amazing.
And it was--until we learned that the domestic beer involved three choices--Miller, Coors Lite, or Budweiser.
Oh. Â Hell. Â No.
I don't wanna have beer that tastes like broken dreams and lowered expectations. Â You have plenty of other drafts (several of which are from the good ol' U.S. of A, mind you!), but I have to settler for the unholy trinity of substandard brewing? Â Oh hell to the no!
"But Teej," Lori said. "Burger Madness!!!"
While it may have been an entirely appealing name, the deal was whack. Â So I contented myself with a delicious patty melt that they allowed me to customize (pepper jack instead of swiss, wheat bun instead of rye--what can I say, I can be a picky jerk). Â And I enjoyed a lovely cider. Â Like a winner. Â Or snob. Â Or both. Â Whatevs.
Despite my lack of burgermadness!, I had a lovely time. Â Lori even managed to grimace down a Coors Lite with her burgeryfiesta.
I'd recommend EJM, but don't get too excited on Monday night's BurgerMadness. Â Unless you like icky beer.
I had the luck of trying this place out for the first time on St. Patrick's Day! I've been to many other pubs that were just as crazy on 3/17, but you would have to wait forever to get a bartender's attention and it would take eternity to get your drink. Not the case with EJ Malloy's! It was packed, but the bartenders were very attentative and quick.
I can't say much for their prices, but being that it was a huge drinking day for all pubs, I'm sure they were a little inflated.
Quick & Dirty: Â Bixby's little secret no more! Â Cold beer, hot wings, TVs, good service, what else could a guy ask for? Â Oh, maybe parking.
Long & Regulated:
Bixby, you've been holding out on me you gorgeous filthy little expensive neighborhood. Â Don't make me raise the back of my hand and slap you down! Â If I EVER find out that you have a cool sports bar and don't tell me again, I'll regulate. Â You hear? Â REG-U-LATE!!!
Now listen here little Bixby... shhhh. Â I'll wisper...
If there is one thing I'm a sucker for it's cheap yet tasty bar food. Â
If there are two things I'm a sucker for it's rare and refreshing Ale's that I've never heard of. Â
If there is three things I'm a sucker for it's warm brownies with caramel and fudge. Â
If there is four things I'm a sucker for it's making a list of things I'm a sucker for.
I had no idea that I was being held out on on ALL 4 Accounts! Â You little...
Now get out of my life Bixby! Â GET OUT! Â I don't love you and I never have! Â Just leave me alone!! Â I will never speak your name AGAIN!
Even though I have an E.J.'s right down the street from me here in Belmont Heights I should have known that there was another. Â With that said...
The one in the-neighborhood-which-I don't-speak-of lives up to the same standards and then some. Â The neighborhood-which-I don't-speak-of locale has more dining tables and is a little bit bigger inside, BUT the one on Broadway is the original and I think has a better patio.
The food is pretty good for bar food. Â I don't think it's fantastic but it is definitely appetizing. Â We had some buffalo wings that were tangy with mild and medium settings. Â I thought the medium was just right, but if you like them nuclear then they have that option too.
For lunch I had the E.J.'s Special which was a sausage sandwich with fries. Â I wish I would have had something else. Â It was good but after seeing all the other good stuff on their menu, I should have picked something different.
For dessert we had a Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae! Â YES! Â Brownies, fudge, Ice Cream, Whip Cream, Caramel! Â Warm gooey deliciousness!!
The one thing that blew about this E.J.'s was the parking. Â We had to park on the street around the block and walk through the alley. Â The original E.J.'s has this same issue. Â
Would I go here again? Â Sure.
Should you go here? Â Yes. Â It's a cool place to sit and watch a game with some friends.
Catch-ya-later!
I'm not a bar gal or a beer gal. I'm a nice dinner and maybe a martini gal. This place had little appeal for me the first time I visited...
And then I had the tomato, chicken & cheese soup and good, friendly service. Awesome!
On another trip, for some bizarre reason, I ordered the fish & chips. Bizarre because I find the idea of eating fish sad and unusual. I'll eat chicken, I'll eat cow and maybe I'll eat some pork but I won't eat fish. Strange craving that day, though. Unfortunately, I only had a two cutlets before I realized what I was doing and stopped. They were delicious but I'm just not into fish. Whatever they fry the fish in has an unusual yet delicious flavor I have never encountered and probably won't again.
Overall, I like this place. It's up the street from my house, which is another perk.
Dear Diary,
EJ Malloys is a great sports bar with TVs in every corner of the room so there is no seat in the place where you need to turn your head to see a TV. Who the fuck cares about that though. The real reason to go to this place is there carne asada quesadilla and their gorganzolla fries. You can also get a Black and Tan (or a Half and Half if you're in Ireland and don't want to get your ass kicked) and they have drink specials every night of the week. It is worth going to if you're looking for an after work drink with some friends or something.
Love, Jerri Blank
There's a time and a place to catch up with old friends about past/current disappointments, loves, intelligence and stupidity, all the while sipping on some cold brews and artery clogging food.
The time: 1:30 pm on a hot, September day.
The place: EJ Malloy's - Sportsbar/pub
As soon as my friend and I entered, we noticed all the empty booths and tables. It was air conditioned quite nicely, but I told her, "uhm, let's eat outside. It smells like mop in here." She agreed and we got a table outside. A perfect sun was shining and a gentle breeze was making it's way through Long Beach just at that time. All was even better when our drink orders were taken almost as quickly as we arrived to our table.
Their menu exemplified your traditional American pub style food and drink: beer this, draft that, imported here, guiness there, blue moons-r-us, sierra nevada something or other. I'm not really a beer drinker (aside from heineken light and tecate on special occasions) so the terminology means nothing to me - sorry! My friend ordered a Sam Adams and I, a delicious pear cider (hi, i'm a girly girl *shakes hand and bats eyelashes*).
They had an assortment of sandwiches: philly cheesesteak, cajun chicken philly, grilled veggie, tuna etc. They also have your classic burgers. Just think of anything American with tons of calories and I'm sure they got it.
Seeing as I was almost done with my first pint of cider and I'd be ordering another, I figured a healthy lunch was shot. So I ordered a philly cheesesteak sandwich. Seemed like a good "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" idea at the time. It was good. Decent. Alright. By the time i finished half of it and some of the oh, so crisp fries, I was done! Done squirming in my seat and pants.
My stomach started (and really hasn't stopped) making all these funny noises. It was probably cursing me out. Aw, well. They have a one person bathroom, which I can tell generates quite the line when it's busy. Luckily for my pantalones, it was empty.
I don't blame EJ's for the stomach experience. I haven't completely accepted, and definitely not embraced my lactose intolerance. So that's my fault. Next time, less cheese and more cider!
Yes. I said next time. I have so much more venting to do.
ahhh. E.J's. it's like the hooker you come back to after months of driving 50 miles to a different town because you were "a little burned out of sylvia's ol' tricks".
E.J's is your friendly neighborhood sports pub type bar. there are two E.J.'s in long beach (3411 broadway is the other), but in my opinion, the atlantic location is best. the decor is nicer and cleaner. the seats and tables are better situated for t.v. viewing and the bar seems bigger too. also, there is no way you can miss a t.v. at this place. yet, it doesn't feel claustrophobic in the way the other locale does.
one thing the broadway locale does have over atlantic is an outside back patio. but then again, the atlantic location has outside curb seating if you want to bring your pets for sunday brunch.
the tap beers consist of firestone double barrel, sam adams and sierra nevada. euro macros include newcastle, guinness, harp, smithwick's. there is also guinness combo drinks and ballast point yellowtail klsch, and 22oz bombers of reaper mortality stout and sleighor IPA.
are you thirsty yet? neither am i. i am not fond of beer bellys.
anyway, the food menu is pretty standard. house hamburgers and sandwiches and a few steak and chicken plates as well as your standard fish and chips. the last one being one of their staples as all tables are equipped with heinz vinegar for this meal. not to be missed are the battered shrimps. the cocktail sauce is made in house and is, as someone with an outdated culinary vocabulary would say, "delish".
yeah.
both resturants ( 4306 atlantic and 3411broadway) strive for the homey feel yet only the bixby location seems like a place you can go with either your buddies or family. service can be spotty at either one sometimes but for the most part, you don't notice it if you're eating and watching a game. both locations usually have more than one game/sport going on.
so, if you're ready to give ol' sylvia another try, then try E.J's.
