I usually don't write reviews, generally food is whatever, but today I ordered nachos. I mean they are nachos, almost impossible to screw up. Wrong, when I got them every nacho was a soggy mess on a microwaved plate covered in lukewarm cheese and wilted lettuce. An honest mistake right? You would think so. Until you complain. Then you're told in no uncertain terms that its usual to have nachos the same consistency as baby food, I was obviously mistaken for expecting there to be something with a crunch in my meal.
We just moved to the area, and I will never be returning. This is pathetic at best.
Lets just say it was very disappointing. The service was not good. The wait staff seemed untrained and in a big hurry and sweaty. We have eaten there twice and both experiences were poor. It took forever to get waited on and the food was below quality. The meat in my burrito tastes like poor pot roast. No flavor at all. The chips and salsa were the best part of the meal. We will definitely travel to Guadalajara in Pantops for our next Mexican meal. Guaranteed a good meal every time.
Review Source:We love this restaurant, the food is consistently good and you get a lot for your money.
However, we usually order takeout because the tile floor means the place is LOUD when it's packed, not a good ambiance at all.
I would caution against ordering anything with shrimp, though, because they almost always overcook it. Â The flavor is still good, such as in the Mazatlan fajitas, but yowza, that's some chewy shrimp!
Better than your average Americanized Mexican restaurant. Â Their chips are made fresh, which makes the complimentary chips and salsa all the more enjoyable. Â
I usually opt for their steak fajitas. Â The serving is quite large so I always have some left over for lunch the next day (assuming my husband does not finish it off first).
It is not a fancy place (decor is more like someone's basement rec room), but it is clean, cheap and service is generally pretty good.
I used to travel for work and have eaten at a lot of small town Mexican restaurants. This one is right in the middle of the pack. The service can be slow if packed, which it usually is on a Friday or Saturday evening because there are not many dining out alternatives near by. The staff is trying their best to get to everyone...it is just too busy and you may have to wait.
They have a very big menu to choose from but the food is only so so, not bad, but not WOW!
Very kid friendly and can get noisy.
My wife and I love El Vaquero ("The Cowboy" in Spanish). The biggest problem we have is that they are way too busy for our liking at the prime times most people want to eat. Great for them, but we don't go there as much as we would otherwise because of this. We go for an early dinner to get around the crowd and by the time we leave, there is a line waiting for a table.
So with that said, take the negative reviews here with that in mind...terrible restaurants do not have a line out the door in prime time.
I do not find the food here bland at all compared to many Mexican places and I like powerful food.
I don't think we have ever been dissatisfied with a meal here and I LOVE Mexican food.
The proprietor has even turned me on to a fantastic tequila I had never had (can never remember the name but there is a deer on the label...like $35 a 750ml)
Huge menu selection...no need to get in to the specifics. This is a solid Mexican restaurant where you can get great food with large portions for a very fair price.
I give El Vaquero 4 of five stars ONLY because they are not big enough to handle their popularity and it is a very casual place...nothing fancy here. Cant blame them for those two black marks, but don't come here with your pinky extended and a stiff upper lip. You may rather wear earplugs to guard against the noise from all the families with children and the sizzling fajitas constantly emerging from the kitchen!
Very friendly people to be sure, but we found the food either bland or just not good. My fajitas were of dried out stringy beef with a ton of dried seasonings thrown on top, not sure what the seasonings were for as they were awful. My husband ended up drowning his chicken in salsa as it had no flavor. My daughter just plain didn't like it and she normally loves Mexican. We tried it twice, but that was enough. Â Sorry, but NOT the best restaurant in the area.
Review Source:I'm not a huge fan of Mexican food, but I do like El Vaquero West. Â They have a nice, casual atmosphere, and the service is always prompt and very friendly. Â I've also eaten their takeout many times. Â I usually opt for the tacos, either beef or chicken, and they are always great. Â They can be a little heavy on the cheese sometimes, but it is mild, so I don't mind.
The chips and salsa are authentic and made fresh, which makes a big difference, especially with the salsa. Â Great neighborhood Mexican restaurant.
WOW!!! Â Talk about good food and a full stomach! Â El Vaquero is a wonderful Mexican restaurant. Â This family run establishment is starting off strong. Â A little over a year old and an instant favorite with just about everyone that goes there. Â The service is extremely friendly and attentive. Â The food is great. Â The place is clean and well kept, with improvements being added all the time. Â I have eaten there multiple times ordering just about every type of dish and have never once been disappointed.
Review Source:This is the best restaurant in the Palmyra area, hands down.  I lived in Palmyra for one year, and tried almost every restaurant in the area.  This is the one I came back to time and time again.  This is the place I recommended and used to entertain  guests.  This is the one my return guests requested.
Lucky me to have had El Vaquero open just before I arrived in Virginia. Â Lucky everyone in the area for this family run business to thrive in such a close knit community.
El Vaquero has an extensive menu. Â If you have seen it in another Mexican restaurant it is probably here as well. Â I've had the chance to sample most of the menu, and can truly say that I have never been unhappy with my choice. Â The staff is happy to make recommendations and can alter things when needed.
I am moving from the area in a few weeks. Â This is the restaurant I will miss. Â These are the people I will miss. Â I encourage you to give this place a try. Â I hope that you will become a regular customer.
