slow, ineffective service; uninspired clams; undercooked salmon; salty knockwurst; little salty bay scallops

Great to grab a drink on the deck with friends on a warm night, because it is convenient and reasonably priced.  But other then adding a deck, nothing has been done to the place in what looks like 30+ years.  The food which was once good, became okay, since gone way south and consistently has been worse each time I have visited.  Other then the bar tenders (who are gems) and 1 or 2 waitresses, the service has also gone south.

Sorry, but not the old Emerson Hotel I used to like. Sat near the fireplace in comfortable surroundings and had attentive, but not warm, service.  Staff seemed not to care if I was there or not. The food didn't care. Onion soup was a little watery and the signature open steak sandwich didn't sign in to me.  It was overdone and tasteless and brought back memories of how good it used to be. I guess sometimes you "can't go home again". Pity.

Thomas Wolfe had a novel many years ago..."You can't Go home Again". I thought of this title as I pulled into the parking lot at the Emerson hotel recently for dinner. back in my way younger days..my folks were regulars here....as were many others. from the outside the restaurant looks a bit tattered and weather worn. inside..it looked amazingly the same....Happy to report..the food quality was similar to what i remember as a kid. wife doesn't share my nostalgia but she seemed to enjoy her salad and salmon entree. I had the onion soup(fine)..and of course had the sliced steak sandwich(large size) with french fries and those delicious onion rings. transported me right back to the 1960's and '70's. very tasty.... its definetely new management from what i remember but they haven't tampered with the steak sandwich!! we're not talking prime beef here but its very satisfying.... while not to everyones taste...the buttery bread under the steak is so so good!! young girl server was very nice....was a pleasant experience and the price is reasonable. full bar service.

The outside deck and tiki bar are great for spring, summer and fall.. Stick to the bar food and you"ll be alright. The inside needs to be stripped and renovated...

Bar food - nothing special. A fun place to go during the summer, sit on the patio and have beer.

My husband and I go here pretty regularly because it's close and we haven't found anything much better.  The food is hit or miss.  We've had really great meals (BLT, burgers, french onion soup, King Crab Legs) but we've also had bad meals (Steak platter, chicken sandwich, chicken francese - which looked like a bad wedding dinner).  I'd like to see a larger beer selection.  The decor is a bit plain; it isn't an upscale/fancy bar.

But it's a decent place for a drink and some bar food, as long as you know what to order, and they have a nice outdoor patio which is heated in the spring/fall.

Some friends suggesed the Emerson Hotel for a quick dinner on a Tuesday night. Place was fairly busy at 7pm. I can't imagine why.

The table split an appetizer of fried calamari. Relatively modest portion came with a tasteless tomato sauce that was spiked with hot pepper flakes. No seasoning on the calamari but it wasn't at all greasy.

I had the sliced steak platter, a specialty of the Emerson Hotel. It came with an uninspired salad of iceburg lettuce, one slice of cucumber, one slice of tomato. I've had better in hospital cafeterias.

The steak platter arrived looking about as unappetizing as could be. Thin slices of meat literally covering the plate from edge to edge. Some toast was hiding underneath and a small pile of french fries were plopped on top. A glaze of some kind was on the meat: I have no idea what it was.  The dish was totally devoid of any seasoning whatsoever. Fortunately there there sizable salt and pepper shakers on the table and they were used. A lot.

Service was disappointing. Each diner at my time had one beverage and one glass of water. Apparently this is the per-diner limit since refills were not offered. Just as well since I wasn't looking to hang around any longer than necessary.

When the 4 piece band started playing (bad musicians, bad singer) it was time to make a hasty exit. So long EH. Perhaps another try in 2021.

The Emerson Hotel is one of the mainstay restaurants in that part of Bergen County.  This place has been open and relatively unchanged for many years (as many as I can remember).  They are famous for two delicious items.  Homemade Onion Rings and their Open Faced Steak Sandwich.

Let me start with the onion rings.  Wonderfullly large and the homamde breading is paper thin and delicious.  When they come out they are almost glued to the surrounding onion rings with tasty wonderfulness (yes I just made that word up).

The prime attraction here is the open faced steak sandwich.  You get a choice of either coleslaw or salad (get the coleslaw!!).  I order mine rare and have it topped with American cheese.  The plate consists of white bread "butter points" (technically they are toast points but they are so loaded with butter they become soft and perfectly work with the steak).  With super think steak on top always perfectly cooked and then placed under the salamander to melt the cheese.

This is certainly not an everyday stop, but boy is it good!!

Spread the word on this place.

My parents really like the Emerson Hotel so we come here every so often. The best thing that I can recommend to you are the drinks and the pizza. It's seriously the best thing they have.

The pizza is paper thin... No, really. Like almost a cracker thin... But SOOO good. It's so crunchy and good! The toppings are pretty much limitless but our favorite is the fra diavolo with sausage. Thinly sliced (not the chunks!) of sausage with spicy sauce. Love it!

Let me note here that the other things I've had there weren't so great. And the sliced steak platter? You'll get better at Lido in Hackensack.

My point? Stick to the pizza in the bar area!

Went here purely for their famous steak sandwiches.  Well there was tons of food, but it was hard to cut through the steak.  Not to mention when you got to the bottom the bread was just mush.  The waitress was wonderful and so were the onion rings.  I am not sure I will be returning.

Once upon a time there was a pizza place in another locality, sometime in the 70's. This pizza place apparently had the worlds best thin crust pizza ever, this was were my parents used to come on dates all the time. Since then, that place has shut down, and after tracking him down we found that pizza chef working at Emerson Hotel, and now, every year when we fly all the way from California, Emerson Hotel is one of the first places we go for delicious thin crust pizza.

So obviously it's thin crust, but what else makes this pie so delicious? well, it could be their fresh toppings, but my brother and I generally give it to the perfect sauce and the cautious amount of cheese. The pizza is perfectly balanced, not too much of anything, ever. To top it off, it's always crispy, and never ever soggy. I'm pretty sure we've even ordered extra pizzas to take home with us. Yummy.

So if you happen to be near this place for whatever reasons you may have, stop in a order yourself a pizza (or two).
