We have eaten at this bar weekly over the past 3-years. Â Typically, the food falls somewhere between acceptable to very good.
Unfortunately, after our horrible experience today, we will not be returning to this establishment.
Two of us ordered the BBQ platter and were served ribs that could not be eaten. Each tasted and looked as if they were stuffed in back of a refrigerator for two weeks. Â Hard, chewy, dry and "not" fresh. Â Actually they were reheated, as the meat was cold and the bones lukewarm. Â No shame in placing such garbage on someone's plate.
After returning the ribs to a middle-aged, brunette waitress, she asked us whether we wanted the ribs replaced with a White Castle's sized pulled pork sandwich. Â We told her "no", as it would not have been an equivalent replacement.
They charged us full price and would "not" prorate nor credit the bill for the bad ribs! The waitress stated those are the Owner's rules.
How's that for lack of accountability and non-existent customer appreciation?
Well Owners, I have my own set of rules. Â If I have a terrible experience at your restaurant and you fail to make it right, then I will let the public know about it.
For a few bucks, this establishment lost several loyal customers and earned a negative review on Yelp. Â That makes a strong statement about how this restaurant is managed, or lack of.
Don't stay away, run away! Â They obviously do not care about their "loyal" customers nor what they serve you. Â Not loosing a couple of dollars is apparently extremely important to them. I truly hope they do not practice this philosophy behind the closed doors of their kitchen during food preparation.
Their food preparation protocol is certainly in question and should be investigated. This is coming from someone who never tasted "bad" ribs in their entire adult life until today.
It's the Fifth Quarter.
It's nothing special on any front, but it's better than the other neighborhood bars in town by a long shot. If you act like an adult, you'll be treated like an adult while you're here. That's more than you can ask for at many other spots in town.
Decent food, decent people, decent --if random -- prices.
Seems most everyone has to put then two cents into the Yelp Jar about this place. Who am I to be different.
Caveat #1. I don't drink.
Caveat #2. I came with my wife and infant son.
Caveat #3. I tried the 5th Quarter out because we wanted to spend less than if we'd gone to Grady's, and felt like NOT going to Chili's, Applebee's, or BW3s.
Simply put? It's standard bar chow, with a little homespun love for good measure. For $11.95 I got a half a rack of ribs, 4 deep fried shrimp, fries, and corn. The fries were obviously frozen spuds with no seasoning. The corn was more than likely from a can or freezer pack. The ribs though, where fork tender and seasoned well. The shrimp were rocket hot and crunchy as one would hope. Paired with "right outta the jar" cocktail sauce? Cheap-perfection.
My wife had a buffalo chicken sandwich. It was a bit off-putting to see them top it was a literal wedge of iceberg, but my wife was pleased. The fries on the side, as with mine, were luke warn and underwhelming.
All that being said? It's cheap. It's filling. It probably goes well with beer. The atmosphere on a Saturday night was certainly fine by my lame standards. Unlike the faux-foodies frequenting Grady's down the street (me being one of them, most of the time), this had a very 'blue collar' vibe to it. Many patrons nodded hello to one another. Regulars were obviously abound. Our server was attentive as we could have hoped.
Suffice to say we're not rushing back there, but they delivered a positive experience. All that, and I didn't see one former HF classmate or my gym teacher...
I love the Fifth Quarter! Sure it can be a little noisy on game days, but what bar isn't?! The bartenders are super friendly and the food is fantastic! I really don't understand the bad reviews. I've been coming to this bar for years, and it is one of the only bars I will go to when I go out (and with a brother in a band I've been to A LOT of bars).
Review Source:Acceptable spot for some domestic beer, bar food and a game. They have pretty good burgers and on one night a week they are half off. The pizza is kind of surprisingly god too (another night is a pizza deal night). They have drink specials on most days. The TV situation is pretty good as there are visible TVs from most all seats. Nice place to watch a game if you want to get out of the house.
Review Source:I'm not a big fan of this bar. It gets three stars because the bar itself is always clean, the bathrooms are always stocked.
But, other than that, there are other places to go to. Â If you're not a regular (even if the place isn't crowded) its hard to get service, the drinks are never consistent prices, and I had a bad experience where my credit card was charged more than I approved.
They do have decent specials (as do most bars in the area) and their pizza and burgers are okay.
After reading all the terrible reviews I had to write in. I don't understand all the negativity. Â I really enjoy the burgers here, my favorite is the stuffed bleu cheese and bacon burger, always a great standby. The chili was a little watery, but tasty. Â I don't come here to drink, but to enjoy a good meal and maybe catch a game. It's not overly loud, or obnoxiously filled with guys with swag and girls barely dressed...
Overall good for families, "older" adults (I'm 36), or any one that wants a good burger and to watch the game.
A friend suggested I come down from chicago for a visit... I took the Metra down and was rather hungry on arrival. I said pizza would be nice so we went to the 5th quarter... Our server Emily was fantastic and so nice. she brought us drinks and a rather large pizza (so much I got to take 1/2 home. The pizza was delicious and after we ate they had a band play and we danced and I just enjoyed the hometown feel. They also had many large screen tv's with games of basketball and hockey on. This was a FUN PLACE and the prices were good. Oh and if your a single guy tons of beautiful women... Family friendly and easy to get to... Thanks Emily you made a good night even better :)
Review Source:The place looks like it has potential but don't be fooled. Â If you are not a regular you may as well forget about good service. Â I played the juke box in the bar area and some grandmother with her grand kids had the waitstaff turn down the sound to where it couldn't be heard. Â I paid good money for that song that was on their jukebox it should have been fine, it wasn't. Â The burger was huge and just as salty. Â There are better options in the area.
Review Source:This place has horrible food. First off, jumbo wings were tiny, over cooked, and hard. Not to mention different sauce than ordered. They're pizza is disgusting (ketchup and cheese on a large cracker). Better off going to little ceasar's. Don't get the 7$ chilli cheese fries. They are soggy cold and undercooked. Overall, stay away from this place. It's sad that people can make money shoveling out gruel, to unsuspecting customers. Roll the dice on a different place to eat.
Review Source:I seriously cannot understand the bad reviews of this place. Is this a place that is loud, noisy and packed with 21 year olds? Â No, and thank goodness for that! Â If you are 30+ and would like to sit and talk, watch a game, and just have a nice, relaxing time with friends, this is the place.
My fiance and I go there very frequently for a couple of beers and dinner, and we have always had excellent service and food. Our favorite waitresses are Peggy, Donna, and Mary, but all are friendly and they work together to make sure you are taken care of. Â They start getting our pitcher ready as we are walking in the door. The wings and the burgers are the best you will find anywhere, and their great pizza is half off on Tuesdays. Five dollar pitchers on Thursdays and dinner specials almost every night. They have clean bathrooms and a very friendly, laid back vibe.
We are in our 40s and always have a great time, but we get what we are looking for. If you are 21 and want a bunch of 21 year olds with loud obnoxious music, drunk people bumping you, screaming girls and young waitresses with more cleavage than brains, then this is not the place for you.
Pauly the Pizza Guy has made this place THE place for pizza in Homewood. The servers are super friendly and attentive. The owners are always there helping to serve and ensure a friendly and fun time. Free live music every now and then is always fun. Free popcorn, free half-time food during football season...
Hot wings on weekends are just 35 cents a wing and oh my goodness are they ever delicious!
Brews on tap are great too. Sam Adams Revolution is on tap right now (February 2011).
There are lots of big screen TVs all around the bar but somehow they are not overwhelming at all. This is a great place for family lunch and dinner and a great place for cocktails/brews with friends.
Mary makes a killer Margarita and Long Island Iced Tea!
I love this place. Love love love. I'm there at least once a week for a bowl of homemade soup or chili or a pizza with the freshest ingredients.
Fifth Quarter is one of those last resort places in Homewood. Â It definitely serves its purpose as a decent sports bar. If you are an HF alumni, expect to see not only most of your graduating class there over school breaks, but also a few of your teachers. Â Don't be surprised if you cozying up to the bar and your gym teacher is sitting next to you. Â The Press Room offers the usual bar choices and have some lunchtime specials. Â Don't ever expect to be served quickly here. Â Also, this place has no vibe to it, just boring.
Review Source:We are locals and visit frequently. My children love the Mac & Cheese Wedges and we love the Pizza, burgers, wings & of course the beer! The only reason I am not giving five stars is because there are a few on the waitstaff that can carry better attitudes. As long as we avoid those two waitresses, we are golden at the 5th! Love ya Steve & Sandy!
Review Source:I grew up in the area and - ahem!- know the area bars from years of coming back home to visit from all the places I have lived over the last 15+ years...Lassen's is very decent as far as hometown bars go, ditto for the Ridge...BUT! I will never darken the door of the Fifth Quarter again. First of all, the place is lame. Really and truly boring. Secondly, there's no service of any kind. The bartender always just kind of stares at you when you walk in. After my HF reunion a couple years ago, some of us went over there in the hopes of getting some kind of junky sustenence along with our drinks. It was only 11 p.m. but they'd stopped serving food! I went back the other night with a friend and it was the same thing. I hate the place, frankly, and don't understand how they stay in business. No place in the South Suburbs serves food much past 9 p.m. and they seem really proud of it. Meanwhile, chains like Applebee's and Chili's are packed over on Halsted. Seems like a lot of lost revenue to me. (And count me as one of the lost customers, too, not that they care!)
Review Source:Oh, just another terrible mysterious Dixie Highway lair that has opened up to me since turning 21 and coming back to my parents' house for Christmas. Not quite as horrifying as "Bogart's after dark" but awful bars are all awful in their own way.
Blah blah blah Homewood blah blah blah pizza whatever. Deserve that 1 star in spades for strong, cheap drinks.
Terrible bartenders who ignored everyone female and anyone who wasn't a regular. Obviously really put off by the "let's see our old high school friends" crowd of strangers in HoFlo for the holidays. Provincial assholes are the reason I ran far far away in the first place, dashing my hopes of getting a drink in under 25 minutes or being bffs with MY OLD GYM TEACHER who was obviously there.
Will probably come back next year. Chip-on-shoulder or not.
a decent bar with decent prices.  Every time i have had food there its been a little less than good.  This is a more mature hangout with patrons in the  30's and up age group though you will find some local twenty somethings there, including myself.  Its a bit more comfortable than some of the other bars in the area, but its weird to go there for me cause alot of the local teachers hangout there and i don't know its just weird to get drunk with my coach ya know?
