You would never find this place if it weren't for being a local, accidentally driving into the parking lot when trying to figure out where you are (as happened with us), or Yelp.
Finding outselves in the parking lot - and noticing the sign that said, "curries" - we quickly checked Yelp and found a 5 -star average on 50 reviews. Â Wow!
And they weren't kidding.
We ate there only once, trying the curried canned corned beef hash (surprisingly delightful) and curry chicken. Â They were both very tasty.
We sampled some exotic looking canned drinks (we did not try the Kava that everyone seems to rave about) - and they were not so great, but still, where else can you sample basil-seed and honey soda and canned sugarcane juice?
If you are from Fiji, India or the South Pacific Seas, you will probably find a slice of home here - if you are from anywhere else, you will have an exotic and tasty trip to one or all of those place.
Five Stars.
If you're in the area, near the shrimp trucks, this is a gotta try spot. Â It's a little mom and pop market with a little grocery store in front and a kitchen in the back where a woman takes your order and whips up these delicious indian curries. Â Your choices are chicken, beef, lamb, vegetable, and I think there was a shrimp as well. Â We chose the chicken and beef curries.
Both were more than ample amounts with large chunks of lean meat. Â Not alot of heat factor but if you ask for more heat, it will be accommodated. Â You have a choice of white rice, brown rice, or roti to go with your curry. Â We had the roti and would not go with that again. Â Too much like a tortilla. Â There was enough left over for another meal the next day.
You would not expect to find this place if you were a tourist traveling around. Back behine other stores, is this little market. In the back of the market is a lady making some of the best curry I have had. You can get chicken, corned beek, pork or shrimp curray. (There may have been one or more others) We all got the chicken. Plenty of chicken breast and great curry. (for about $10.00) This is not far from BYU Hawaii on the coast. Can't wait to come visit my son at school again. This will be thr first place we will go. The little market sells all sorts of Indian food. I can eat Indian every day.
Review Source:This place changed the way my wife looks at curry. Â She had grown up on the mainland, eating uninspired mainland versions of curry. Â We moved out here, and I brought some home from here one day - she loved it! Â We had the chicken curry with the roti and tomato chutney, and I picked the sweet mango relish they have - great food at a great price. Â They also have a small grocery which is where I now buy my curry powder. Â Very helpful service and great food - worth a visit!
Review Source:There were several options but we chose the beef curry and roti instead of the rice. It came with tomato chutney. The wait was kinda long but once you start eating, you forget that you even had to wait for it. The food was yummy! The curry sauce was so good that I wish I had a scoop of rice to finish it! I'm definitely going again! Next time it's the meat pies and roti!
Review Source:People always say "My Mom's/Auntie's food is better..." well, the Auntie-ji there is the Mom of the shop and let me tell you--that IS Mom's cooking. I haven't had family made Indian food in years or any of the South East Asian goodies I miss living overseas.
They got it all, from India to Thailand, Indonesia, to Aotearoa. It's the only place I happily shop for groceries while I wait for my lunch/dinner to be ready.
Love this place!!!
Corned beef curry is a must try. It comes with roti as well. For a drink, I tried their advertised $1 can of pomegranate Fijian soda called "Bula". After my meal, I was wishing they had a place like this in Waikiki. For those venturing out to the North Shore, don't forget to make a stop at the Fiji Market & Curry Shop.
Two thumbs up!
Located right next to the Giovanni's Original Shrimp truck area, it sadly goes unnoticed. Lucky for the regulars but not so great for the uninitiated. The name itself is deceiving. Â Fiji Market and Curry Shop. Â They sell all sorts of interesting items including Kava drinks and Indian goods but their Indian food is amazing. Family run shop with sports drinks to the left and samosas and meat pies to the right as you enter. Â The "restaurant" is in the back. Â The menu board is up above and very simple. Â Lamb, chicken, beef or Shrimp curry. Â You can choose white rice, brown rice, tapioca or roti to go with it. Â There were a few other items but for your first time, the shrimp curry is a must as is the roti. Â I LOVE roti and this one was perfect.
It took a while to get the plate but it was worth it. Â There are 4 picnic benches outside and they bring the food out when it's ready. Â The plate was amazing. Â 7 big juicy shrimp that was bigger than the shrimp at the shrimp truck, two HUGE pieces of roti and a tomato based sauce. Â The roti was perfect and the curry sauce for the shrimp was perfect with all the seasonings. Â The shocker. $12. Â The most expensive curry. Â That's unheard of for Indian food in Hawaii. Â Inexpensive AND delicious AND with big portions...say what?!!??!?
For those that like Indian food, make the drive to the North Shore, bypass the shrimp trucks and get your shrimp fix with the shrimp curry. No line, family-owned and you can munch on samosas and drink kava as you wait for the food.
Huge shrimp? Check.
Beef Curry? Check.
Friendly guy to explain things that you may not immediately understand about Fiji? Check.
Oh, and the prices are great (big shrimp plate for $12), and they have kava if that's your thing.
Next time you're on the North Shore, and you drive past the long lines at the trucks, keep driving. Go here instead.
We found this little gem via yelp and everyone was spot on. Read for directions on how to find this place.  The man in the store was very helpful and nice. Gave us explanations and  answered all our questions.
We had the lamb which was delicious. The portions are huge so my wife and I split the meal. If you have 2 in your party and your not big eaters the opt to split.
If you're a local then stop by here for south east Asian groceries.
Ck it out!
If you want to have an authentic Fijian curry lunch, this is a fantastic place.
You'll rub shoulders with locals.
The portions are royal.
The vegetarian plate was greasy and delicious. Potatoes were perfectly cooked. Brown rice... damn!
Dal had a nice, building spice level.
If your two smaller people, you could probably split an order.
Fiji Market & Curry Shop has been the best food addition to the north east side in years. Their Fijian curry options hit the spot. For those that don't know, Fijian curry is Indian based with a unique twist. Roti is naan that is best described as a thicker Mexican flour tortilla. All food is made fresh to order. My personal favorite is the chicken curry with tapioca on the side.
Besides serving hot food, Fiji Market & Curry Shop offers a variety of hot New Zealand Meat pies, roti wraps as well as groceries found throughout the Pacific and beyond. If you're up for something different, Fiji Market & Curry Shop is the place to go in the Kahuku area.
I had no idea this place was back there behind the gas station until some locals mentioned that they thought of me when they saw the vegetarian option on the menu. So I had to check it out. It was amazing!!! The veggies and curry were sooo good. Definitely a great find, I will be back for sure!
Review Source:Wow, I wish I had this market back home. The curry and roti was really good with huge portions. We had the vegetarian curry which was chickpeas and potato on rice with dal soup. We have enough left overs for probably 2 more meals. The samosas were really good as well. Their was only one vegetarian curry option but they change it daily.
I was impressed with their market selection as well. They had every spice you would need to prepare any indian meal. There were more types of lentils and beans available than I knew existed.
Definitely worth the trip and I will be going back.
Good curry and good portions too. The store is fun to look around too while you're waiting for your food to come out. They have a lot of Australian snacks like timtams and other stuff that I can't remember. We buy our cadbury chocolates here.
They also have lots of ingredients you can use to make indian and fijian food.
And yes, their meat pies are heavenly packed with meat and gravy.
Yes, this place is a hidden gem but worth the find. Definitely curry is their specialty so you can't go wrong with whatever item you order. Unfortunately, we did not realize that the portion sizes were so big so we each got our own shrimp and chicken curry plate. Each comes with 2 scoops of rice and the biggest roti you have ever seen. I also ordered the beef/cheese new zealand pie since everyone on Yelp said it was the best ever so of course we did and it was the best ever! Then our yummy curry meals came and we both couldn't finish our plates and had to be rolled out of that place. The curry was outstanding, just the right amount of spice and the shrimp was succulent and sweet. Certainly recommend this place to all! Its a must while you are visiting.
Review Source:I'd give this place 10 stars if I could! I f'ing LOVE Fiji Market!
You wouldn't even know this place was here unless someone told you about it or if you came across it randomly on Yelp. Its tucked back behind the First Hawaiian Bank and the gas station in Kahuku.
The place is a little market/shop with a small kitchen in the back left corner.
I always get the vegetarian curry plate, which consistently changes and is consistently AMAZING! It comes with rice (you can make it brown rice), split pea soup and this stewed-like tomato something or other. You can also add a side of roti which I recommend. Sometimes its a mixed veggie curry and sometimes its a sweet potato curry, but it is always sooooo good!
I have taken out of town guests here and they have had a variety of stuff on the menu, from chicken to shrimp and they all raved about it. Even my little brother who is strictly a steak and potatoes kid LOVED the food from here!
The family that owns this place is so friendly and lovely.
While you are waiting on your food you can shop around their store or head to the front and grab a beverage.
The only seating is outside at picnic tables under a shaded tent.
Try this place, you won't be sorry!
Don't forget to tip at the counter when you pay!
This is a little surprise on the North Shore. It's a family-run shop that's hidden among the more commercial trucks and diners. Come here for take-away as its not a proper restaurant. The family is so friendly and made my shrimp curry extremely hot, just the way I asked. Finally, someone who doesn't skimp on spice! They also have a delicious homemade chutney jarred and ready to go. If you're in the market for spices or items to make your own curry, ask them since they probably have it!
Review Source:Curry lovers unite! Â This hidden market is worth the trek to the little one stoplight, football loving town of Kahuku. Â Ditch the shrimp trucks and make your way to some darn good curry. Â
Fiji Market and Curry Shop is located off Kam Highway, behind the gas station and lots of parking is available. Â You order your curry at the window in the back of the store, straight ahead when you walk in. Â There is vegatarian, beef, shrimp, chicken, lamb and corned beef. Â I usually play it safe and get chicken elsewhere but I came all the way out here so I chose corned beef. Â Then you can choose brown or white rice and tapioca or a roti. Â I helped myself to the mango and tamarind chutney and some picked carrots. Â
I couldn't help myself and had some curry with the roti while I was driving. Â Very, very good! Â Its spiced just enough and not at all oily or liquidly that it will be spilling out of the container. Â Its not just the meat with some curry sauce poured over. Â They really give a substantial amount of meat that is bursting with flavor. Â The corned beef as a little salty but you'll get over it. Â I've never had roti before and it went so well with the curry. Â I think I prefer the curry with roti over the rice. Â And the chutneys...omg. Â You have to get the sweet mango chutney. Â To die! Â
The plates are made to order so it does take a little bit to get your food. Â But it does give you time to peruse the store and look at all the various items they sell. Â I tried to look but my son was busy throwing things off the shelf while I followed him putting them back. Â
I wish they weren't so far away. Â Though places like this prove that good things are worth the wait and the drive.
My sister and I stopped by this little market yesterday while our dad was getting his hair cut at the tiniest barber shop near by. Â
My sister got a "Beef & Cilantro" New Zealand meat pie (similar to a pot pie but way better). Â She loved it; the crust was buttery & flaky, and the spices were subtle; not overpowering. Â I had the Lamb Curry plate. Â It was ONO (SUPER DELICIOUS)! Â The lamb was very tender, and the gravy is very tasty; full of wonderful spices. Â The chutney was excellent too; has a little kick (spicy hot) to it. I had the roti (you have a choice of rice, brown rice, roti or tapioca) and it was the BEST roti I've had; so fresh, soft and delicious. Â Even my sister and dad (his first time) loved it. Â We enjoyed the meal so much that we purchased a bowl of their delicious chutney, and a bag of naan to go. Â (The prepackaged naan was not as good as the roti served with the meal.)
The wait was a bit long, but well worth it! The owners are very friendly and warm, and the store is neat & clean. There are tables outside to enjoy your meal.
We HIGHLY recommend Fiji Market & Curry Shop!
I would have NEVER thought I would find curry this good on Oahu let alone the north shore. The family that owns the place is super friendly and will steer you the right way!!!! Â We had the chicken curry (excellent) and the corned beef curry (out of this fricken world). Â Go search this little place out for something totally unexpected. Especially awesome after a day snorkeling at sharks cove!!!!
Review Source:Ever since ready Yuko A.'s review of Fiji Market & Curry Shop, I've been trying to get a taste of their shrimp curry. Â Unfortunately, they were always closed when I was in the area. Â Well last Friday, they were open so we swang by after we picked up lunch for some friends at Giovanni's.
Note, if you order the shrimp curry...either call ahead or be prepared to wait about 15-20 minutes. Â I wasn't aware of this fact until the end. Â When I asked the cashier (I'm assuming also the owner) why the food was taking so long, he explained to me that they try to avoid refrigerating things overnight and with the high cost of shrimp, they always make it fresh.
If shrimp isn't your thing, they also have chicken, lamb, and I believe a corned beef curry. Â I found this mini market to be quite fun as there are many spices, lentils, etc. in each of the aisles. Â
We also tried the steak and cheese Australian meat pie. Â At $6 it was a bit expensive, but worth a taste. Â The crust is a bit different than the regular American pot pies.
I got my curry with roti and enjoyed the meal. Â The tamarind chutney goes along very nicely with the shrimp curry, while the mango chutney is good, but a bit too sweet for my liking.
OMGheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!
This hidden gem is the BEST Indian food in Hawai'i!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How long have I craved Indian on Oahu only to be disappointed by oily curries and overpriced vegan dahls? NO MORE! I will happily make the 50 minute drive to Kahuku to visit this little slice of curry heaven.
Tucked behind the slew of shrimp trucks and tents selling sarongs and other things not made in Hawai'i, lies Fiji Market *cue music*. The old Sugar Mill in Kahuku now has it's own little slice of food-gasm.
We enter the dingy establishment and I immediately notice that the owners are an Indian family, with the wife running the kitchen and the men watching the register. The shelves are stocked with Indian spices, naan breads, roti, dried lentils, chutneys, and other random oddities (like Garam Masala Lays! And... the have ridges!!!) Anywho, I immediately clamor to the tiny window in the back where they sell their crack curry.
We devoured the following:
Shrimp curry - Oh how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... Six jumbo shrimp covered in a mildly spiced, but oh so addictive curry of garlic, ginger and gheeeee! This plate came with 3 thick roti and a savory tomato chutney. I'm loving this... I've got ghee all over my fingers, I've got torn roti pieces drenched in ginger-garlic-ghee-goodness, I've got ghee running down my chin, I'm practically BATHING IN GHEE! It's ono. Best taste of 2012. The tomato chutney is probably made from canned tomatoes, but the savory and acidic contrast to the umami of the curry is divine. I'm ghee-fully happy with this dish.

Side order of dahl - Now this is what dahl is supposed to be. Perfectly spiced with cumin and mustard seeds, the velvety smooth texture grabs a hold of the pleasure cycle in your brain and you can't stop eating! For only $3, this is a necessary add on to anything you order.

Also of note is the complimentary condiment bar which offers mango chutney, tamarind chutney, pickled jalapenos, and best of all... HOMEMADE GARLIC PICKLED CARROTS! These were so good, coated with chunks of garlic and a nice vinegary bite. I also loved the tamarind chutney with the roti and the mango chutney made a nice accompaniment to some lamb we grilled later that night. I love that it's serve yourself!

Overall, Fiji Market serves up more traditional Indian curries than other places I've tried on the island. They also specialize in Fijian curry, and sell Fiji curry powder so I assume this has a slightly different flavor profile. That fact that they serve corned beef curry is testament to the fact that they cater to the outer - and I mean outer - island palate.
Unlike India cafe, the roti is think and hearty (not the heavy flat variety they serve at India Cafe that tastes like someone took a rolling pin to an old croissant). The prices are also more aligned to what I'm used to for Indian food ($9 for meat curries, $8 for vegetarian - which comes with dahl too, and $12 for shrimp curry).
NOTE: Break out the Visa cuz it's time to stock up on your favorite Indian food items! I took home roti, naan, garlic naan, coriander chutney, house made mango chutney, garam masala spice, garlic peanuts and more!!! They also serve New Zealand meat pies and curry rolls. I recommend eating curry while you're there and grabbing a few frozen meat pies to take home for later! Why eat at any of the touristy shrimp shacks when you can have ghee covered shrimp of the gods? I'm a fan!!!!
My dad was born and raised in Fiji and came to Hawaii when he was 19 years old. Â And though you can take a boy from his island, you can't take the island from the boy and so along with him came the cooking skills and flavors from his beloved home. Â A lot of people don't realize that there is a strong Indian influence in Fiji. Â So naturally, there is a lot of Indian food. Â It's not the same kind of Indian food that you would get at Maharani or India Cafe though. Â You know how Hawaii has it's own version of Korean food, Japanese food, Chinese food, so on and so forth? Â Fiji has it's own version of Indian food as well. Â Let me just say that Fiji Market and Curry Shop is THE PLACE to get this version of Indian food and it will blow your mind!
The Fiji Market is a little shop in back of the 7-11, neighbor to Giovanni's Shrimp Shack in Kahuku. Â To order your curry plate, go to the back of the tiny store where there is a take out order window. The vegetarian and chicken curries are my favorite. Â And the roti...ohhhhh, the roti! Â My dad make a really good homemade roti, but this place rivals even my dad's (don't tell him I said that). Â The best way to eat the roti is to break of a small piece, place a small amount of curry inside of it and pop it in your mouth. Â My mouth is watering already. Â The curry is bursting with intense flavors of cumin, tumeric, mustard seed...sooooo good! Â
The other thing that you MUST try at the Fiji Market is the Australian meat pies! Â I don't even know what the relation between Fiji and Australia is, but it makes sense to me because a lot of my relatives from Fiji have moved to Australia. Â While visiting them in Australia, my diet strictly consists of meat pies...meat pie for breakfast, meat pie for lunch, meat pie for dinner. Â I love it! Â This is not your "chicken pot pie" meat pie with some kind of white gravy and frozen veggies inside - yuck. Â THIS meat pie has a flakey, buttery puff pastry shell and chunks of meat and savory sauce inside. Â I'm pretty sure its the ONLY place on the island to get Australian meat pies. Â Steak and mushroom is y favorite. Â
The Market also sells spices for cooking your own curry, cookies, snacks and other grocery type items that commonly be found in Fiji, New Zealand and Australia. Â It's like Disneyland for my dad when he's there. Â
The next time you are on the North Shore doing a shrimp truck run, be sure you save some room for Fiji Market and Curry Shop! Â At the very least, eat your shrimp and grab a take out plate from here to have something to look forward to for dinner!
This is a great alternative to Giovanni's shrimp. I like Giovanni...but I just don't like getting my hands all sticky because I have to de-shell the shrimps to eat them. I rather just go to Sam's in Waikiki. Much better...
Ok, back to Fiji Market & Curry Shop. Like I said it's a great alternative. It's a small shop behind the gas station that is next to Giovanni.
The other yelp reviews say it's Fijian curry. Whatever the case, it sure isn't the Japanese curry I'm used to. I got the vegetarian curry (which changes daily). It was pumpkin. And I got it with roti? It's like a flat bread thing instead of rice. It also comes with split pea soup. YUM! ...and some salsa?
Although I don't think it's VERY YUMMY, I'll probably go back if I'm in the area when my friends want Giovanni. I'll sneak away to get curry instead. LoL.
Yelp 365 Challenge #159/365
I always love getting a plate of garlicy buttery shrimp from Giovannis when I'm at the North Shore but a change is also nice. My family was in town and on our way to Giovannis we saw a sign for curry shrimp. Now my dad is mildly addicted to curry so we of course had to try it out. He couldn't wait for us to finish our shrimp so we could try out the curry.
I yelped it on our drive over (aka one driveway over from Giovannis) and saw that the corned beef curry and Roti were popular so thats what we ordered. The guy who took our order was friendly, I think his mom was cooking in the kitchen and his father was running the cash register.
The kitchen is in the back of a grocery store and its got a great family feel to it. I haven't tried it out yet but we found a bag of Lays Marsala chips which I guess they only sell in India. They have a covered seating area in the front of the store with a few picinic tables set up.
It took a little while for the food to come out but it was worth the wait. The roti was definitely freshly baked and was almost too hot to touch at first. It was buttery and great for dipping into the curry. Although the curry was a little on the oily side, what curry isnt. The tomato salsa/sauce that it comes with was a perfect balance to the salty corned beef.
Also tried their curry chicken pie and while it was closer to a chicken pot pie with some spices it was so good. A flaky crust and tender pieces of chicken and veggies. Yum!
Curry was $8, roti was $2, and the pie was $4.50 Will definitely be back!
YELP 365:045/365
Went here while staying at Turtle Bay. It's located behind the gas station, kind of hard to see.
We got the curry chicken and curry shrimp, both were good but the chicken was definitely better. The roti was fresh made as we ordered it. They have a family vibe to the store and you can tell they appreciate their customers.
Wow, the curry here is craaaazy good. Read about it in a local magazine, saw the good reviews on Yelp, so we just had to check it out this past weekend when we were out in Laie. We shared the chicken curry w/roti. The curry was so flavorful and plentiful. Loved mixing in the tomato sauce thing. The roti was buttery and delicious. Had enough leftovers to enjoy a small snack at home. Worth the drive all the way out to Kahuku!
Review Source:I had high expectations with all the 5-star reviews I saw. Sadly, I thought the food was just slightly above average. I had the chicken curry and while it was good, I was not dying to go back and have it again. I did think the meat and cheese pie was really good and am glad we got it since the entrees took a while to come out. The family that ran the place was nice and very friendly.
Review Source:Driving to Kahuku for curry and roti made by a family from Fiji may seem crazy. Â But after tasting the corned beef curry and roti, I'd drive to the ends of earth to have it again. Â I only wish I ordered more curry to take home with me. Â
Located in back of the old Kahuku Sugar Mill, Fiji Market & Curry Shop is a family run business. Â The owner and his son are warm and friendly. Â I'm not positive but I think the wife/Mom in the back kitchen is the cook. Â You instantly feel welcomed the moment you step into the tiny shop. Â The owner even invited us to stay with his family in Fiji should we ever visit. Â Now that's true hospitality. Â
The menu features chicken, beef, lamb, corned beef, and vegetarian curry with either rice or roti and a side of tomato chutney. Â They also have 4 different condiments to accompany the curry (mango chutney, tamarind sauce, pickled carrots, and pickled jalapenos). Â My personal favorites are the mango chutney and pickled carrots. Â
Sit just outside the market (they have tables and chairs set up) and the food will be brought to you. Â My Dad had the lamb curry and I had the corned beef curry. Â While both curries had a lot of oil, it didn't taste oily. Â Personally I thought the lamb curry was a bit to gamey for my taste (more like mutton) but my Dad loved every bite. Â He especially like the fact that the lamb was on the bone and a bit chewy. Â The corned beef curry was AWESOME! Â Perfectly seasoned, full of chopped corned beef and chunks of onion. Â The chewy, piping hot roti was a perfect vehicle for sopping up the delicious bits of curry. Â
Warning! Â The portions are large. Â They give you 3 roti with each order and a good amount of curry. Â So come hungry and ready for a truly unique and delicious experience. Â At $8-$9/plate this place is a true bargain and an outstanding experience. Â I can't wait to visit this amazing place again. Â Thank you Fiji Market & Curry Shop!
Im the type of person that likes to look for local greasy spoon dive places.. By this time, we have done the shrimp boats and other type of local foods on the North Shore.. So we were looking for something even better than your road side joints! Well, we found one of the best places you can ever find on the North Shore.. Dont get me wrong, Giovannis and etc are great... but if you are tired of the shrimp.. Then you need to find this place and enjoy a good tray of curry and roti.. I was very impressed.. Im not a huge on curry.. but I ordered the Corn Beef with Roti! WOW, It knocked my socks off!!! The food was incredible and perhaps on the best eats Ive had on the island so far!! Its been very hard for me not to visit this place for the 2nd time, but I might on my way out of the island.. This is not a full blown service cafe.. actually this place is a grocery store.. its in the back of the store and with a small window with small kitchen.. doesn't look like much, but that kitchen will deliver some of the best food your taste buds will ever eat.. There are some seats / benches outside you can eat at.. So be ready to dine outside like a picnic.. Its almost like in the alley way of the sugar mill.. But dont be scared, its not shady or seedy.. its really delightful and a great experience. If anything, go for the food.. You will thank me later!!
I know I should only give 5 stars based on all groups.. Like area, parking, service and etc.. But the food alone, wins my 5 stars....
This place has excellent curry! I absolutely love their roti too...and they also have a nice (but small) selection of indian grocery items, which is nice. Best of all, they take credit cards (I rarely carry cash now days). The staff is very friendly over all and willing to help with whatever you need.
Review Source:I used to live in Fiji a long time ago. Â I had this craving for Curry and roti. Â In Fiji, Curry and Roti was a wrap. Â A thin roti burrito full of chicken, potato curry. Â This place has it. Â THe roti isn't as thin but its tasty. Â THe chicken current doesn't have potato, but the flavor is delic!! Â I also tried their corned beef curry wrap which has potato and it tasted great.
The market is relatively small. Â They serve food in the back counter and they have a few pre-made stuff in the front.
I'm waiting to come back for their canned fish curry which was also popular in Fiji. Â They have mango skins. Â Kava. Â
It is a family run business and they are super friendly.
If you're in the area, I would recommend stopping by...
TOTAL HIDDEN GEM: delicious food, friendly family-run business, hard to find items!
It's in the Kahuku Sugar Mill area in the back area; once you enter the Sugar Mill area, turn to the right and it's in the back. Â There are large signs on the hwy but I think most people are solely focused on Giovannis, which is next door. Â But this time, we were on a mission. Â About an hour after leaving town, we drove past Giovannis and saw the large signs for FIJI MARKET AND CURRY KITCHEN. Â BINGO! Â While Giovannis does garlic right, there are so many others that do it. Â But who else does this kind of Fiji/Indian curry like this??? No one!
There are a few spaces right in front of the shop.
It's really a grocery mart with a takeout food kitchen in the back. Â We came for the curry/roti wraps and you just have to know that they'll do it. Â The menu in the back has a lot of the curry plates (chicken, lamp, shrimp, corned beef, vegetarian) that comes with 2 scoops rice, roti, or 1/2 roti/rice and a tomato chutney. Â I think the curry plate was about 8 bucks (I'll take a photo of the menu and post shortly!).
The curry was so perfectly seasoned and the roti was so flavorful. Â The rice was good, but it's just rice--no saffron or anything. Â The chutney I could do without since it tasted kind of liked salted diced tomatoes out of a can. Â But back to the curry itself--you can tell it's high quality meat--almost no fat, chicken breast, and nicely cut pieces. Â And my plate was full of chicken! They don't skimp on portions. Â The flavors are delicate but yet aromatic. It's not too heavy and not too rich. Â A little salty for my palate but the wonderfulness of the flavors were what got me.
The roti wraps (it's like naan bread but better): they have some up front like can fish (but they run out a lot) and corned beef) but you can also order it from the takeout counter in the back. Â Just ask for it!
They sell other goodies like spices, mango skins, and other south pacific and indian-like spices and food products.
It's a family run business and they are so friendly as well.
Open M-Saturday 9am to 9pm. Â I think they will do special orders if you call ahead. Â I think next time we'll call ahead and order a tray of curry!
They do accept Visa/Mastercard/JCB and maybe one other (NOT Amex though)
This place is truly a hidden gem...worth the drive, worth the adventure!
