Great beer, I like the unique wheat beer with the banana clove flavor. Ipa is not very hoppy though, some may like this but I didn't. Sandwiches and burgers are big, juicy, and tasty. Fun patio had a smoking and non smoking area. Nice service. Good summer place. A Flagstaff must go. (Kind of dirty tables, but silverware, glasses and plates were clean.)
Review Source:Flag Brew is one of my favorite Flagstaff pubs.
My daughter and I love the selection of beers at a great price and the featured whiskey specials. Love sitting at the bar. It has a cozy, hole in the wall feel. Even played a game of ping pong! (Not very well, but fun nonetheless).
They have an amazing outdoor patio that is a must visit! Right in downtown surrounded by other eclectic shops.
If you're hungry....you MUST try the Bagna Calda....nothing better than sizzling garlic cloves that have been simmering in oil. (Warning: You will smell like garlic for a good day or two after, but so worth it). If you're feeling like a fat kid........I love the Poutine......who wouldn't?? Fries, smothered in gravy and cheese??!! Yum.
Ask for Josh, he's the best! Great service and super attentive.
I love the casual atmosphere and small town feel of this place.
Thanks Flag Brew! Can't wait until the next time! :)
I want to like Flag Brew more than I do.
I've been coming here since they opened, just about 20 years ago.
I don't believe it's been cleaned since then! Â
I like their beers but that's about it. Â Then again they've brewes the same few beers for two decades so I hope they'd have the recipes sorted out. Â
It has that old dingy feeling you get in a place that doesn't really have much character, just lots of dinginess; cheap, dirty and worn out and neglected as if either the owner is broke or the place just runs itself now and he takes the money and runs.
The staff is not the slightest degree friendly or helpful and the menu makes the food sound like it's going to be much better than it ever actually is. Â
Like I said, I want to like this place much better than I do. Â There is a big beer scene in Flag, and despite the same few good beers they've brewed for 20 years, this is usually my last choice.
I hope the owner or manager stops being lazy, cleans the place up, kicks the chef in the ass and brews some fresh beers before Flag Brew is irrelevant.
i really want to recommend this place. really.
but i can't.
1) every time i go, the service is  i n s a n e l y  slow.
2) i could cook a better burger......(and i don't cook...............)
2) they  N E V E R  have the beers i want on tap - i mean come on, it's summer, and you don't have your ipa???!?!? for  F O U R  years in a row?!?!?!?
3) the place is a dive. unless that's your thing...
4) the servers have zero personality/happiness/smiles/anything
the good thing though is that there's almost always a seat on the patio when other places are full. although that's probably due to the above...
not a bad place to hang out. but every time i leave here i feel disappointed :/
I didn't like the food or interior of this bar much, but it is a good place to watch live music. The inside feels...on the dingy and dirty side. The patio is nice though, if it's warm enough to be out there. The menu is a little small and the sandwich I got (portobello mushroom) just wasn't that good. The bread was crappy white grocery store bread but stale and the marinade/dressing on the mushrooms was astringent from too much vinegar. I thought the fries were a little too dry/mealy on the inside. The food really suffers in comparison to the other Flagstaff breweries' food, which overall tastes better.
However we saw a great band called Running out of Road perform live and the atmosphere with the rest of the people in the bar was great. There was quite a mix of people here - older people, dread-locked hippies, bachelorettes, people trying to hook up, etc, and everyone was having fun so there is really something good to say about a bar that can appeal to such a diverse group of people.
Flag Brew is a must try when visiting Flagstaff. They have a great selection of beers and an absolutely gorgeous patio to drink them on.
I ordered the Poutine and it was disgustingly good. Imagine thick cut fries covered in cheese and gravy.. Heart Attack! Wash that down with a few beers and you've ingested more calories than you should consume in a week. Good news is Flag Brew is within walking distance to most hotels so you can burn off those calories while you stumble home.
Happy hour ought to be renamed "Utter Joy." They have exceptionally reasonable prices (I was debating asking my waitress if I could pay extra) on both food and drinks. Their beers are wonderful, and they have a huge selection. I'd recommend their amber ale, being that I'd replace my tap water with it. I'd also recommend the hummus plate, it was a great variety, well made, and as satisfying as a night with a porn star.
They're very vegan friendly, and have a delicious black bean burger with pear (not on the happy hour menu, but it'll make you happy- fear not). The staff was really friendly, knowledgeable, and good looking. If you go for happy hour, leave a good tip- show them the prices are appreciated. Thanks to the staff and owner, I'd kiss most of you if I could.
Enjoy, and as always, think before you eat.
Their fries are good.
The "Poutine" is an abomination. Its shredded motz with horrid, watery gravy. What????
Their in-house brews lack inspiration, I generally get guest taps. You can tell their carb system hasn't EVER been cleaned, tastes dirty, forcing me to go for bottles. I only go here when I'm forced to. The servers are ok, pretty attentive. The tenders all have a chip on their shoulder, but are generally attentive as well.
The outdoor seating and music is good.
I did not get any food here so I am rating this place on beer, service, and atmosphere alone.
Maybe I am weird but I prefer to see the fermenting tanks when I drink at a craft brewery; Flagstaff Brewery lacks that key feature. To be honest I felt like I was in another standard hole in the wall pub. Another negative is the house brew was nothing worth mentioning; in fact after my second house brew I switched over to a more familiar guest brew that they had on tap. Service was mediocre which was odd considering how slow they were.
Hard to say if I would come back.....
Recently in town just passing by and I desperately needed a beer after driving for 10hrs. My wife and I came in and were not impressed when we had a bunch of little kids running around hollering their heads off. Now I can understand if it's noon but this was at 10PM and I was in no mood to listen to it.
Now, on to the food. I believe I tried their wheat beer and I was pretty impressed. I spent years in Germany and since un-filtered wheat beers have become my preference it's always the first order of business if it's on the menu. I loved this beer and would have no qualms ordering more or even purchasing it in the store. My wife had the blonde and it was good as well, with an easy drinkability to it. We both got the burgers, I myself got the blue cheese burger which was delicious and perfectly cooked to my medium preference. I can't remember which one my wife got but she enjoyed it as well. Overall the experience was fine....except for our dodgy waitress. And I say this un-caringly because she was stoned and didn't want us to know so she never made eye contact. I'm 25, liberal and from Colorado. I could care less if you're baked or not. Keep on keeping on honey.
This place has as great small vibe..
I only had time for a few beers and they were pretty good....the service was average but that is more than I can say for most places these days.
The location is awesome for this spot so the foot traffic is perfect.
Beer was average but that is honestly how most are these days. Tried the ones that had on tap, wasn't really impressed but wasn't grossed out which was a pleasant surprise.
We didn't have any food so I cannot help there..but if you are like me and must try all breweries when you travel, give it a shot...at least to say you did.
To sum up the whole experience.....cool little hole in the wall.
We came here after a long day on the road; we had planned on going to Lumberjack but didn't feel like the 50-minute wait, and so wandered around til we happened upon this place, which was fairly empty when we arrived around six. Â The waitress invited us to pick a spot, and we grabbed a little table near the front. Â
Dan had a couple of the beers on tap, and the shroom burger; I had the soup of the day, which was beef and barley, and the pear salad. Â The burger was pretty hefty, with mushrooms, cheese, bacon, and all sorts of yummy goodness. Â The soup was decent; the salad was a little heavy on the vinaigrette, but had good flavors and textures going on. Â Dan pointed out the influence of the local water on the flavor of the beers, which were only $4 each. Â Our bill came to about $35.
It was pretty chill when we arrived, and got busier by the time we left at seven; the table next to us had a couple of locals showing their friends around the town, and were talking about all the good things about living in Flagstaff. Â Huzzah for local pride!
While in the area, we stopped for a pint. The Pale Ale is excellent. Service and food were both great.
The inside is very open and inviting, with a long bar with plenty of bar stools. We sat out on the patio because it was such a nice day getting out of the heat of Phoenix.
We both had a pint and shared a basket of onion rings that were very flavorful.
I will definitely come back to have a full meal and another pint
Visited Flagstaff Brewing Company after reading the great reviews on Yelp and because it was part of the Flagstaff Ale Trial. Â First of all the location is great! One side of the bar has huge windows opened to Route 66 and the train tracks, great for people watching; and the front door to the bar opens to a nice alleyway filled with small boutiques and other restaurants. Â There is a very large outdoor patio and indoor seating area, with a long bar with lots of barstools. Â
My boyfriend and I both ordered the Pale Ale and he also ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich with french fries. Â Everything was delicious , but the thing about this bar that made it one of my favorites of the day was the Ping Pong table. Â haha yes, ping pong! Â I mean, there's not many bars with Ping Pong tables and it was fun to play with my boyfriend and totally beat him at something for once in my life :)
Atmosphere of the bar and patio are great, with really tall ceilings and an open concept- totally a great Flagstaff brewery!!!!!!!
Pale Ale is excellent! Also you must try the black bean hummus. Would definitely stop here again for a pint after a day of hiking. The locals were really nice and friendly and we'd definitely go again.
Like I said it was the perfect watering hole after a long day of hiking. I do wish they bottled the beer so we could have taken more of it home.
-didn't try any food so I'm rating it on the service, drinks, patio & atmosphere
-sat on patio & had drinks during sunset/art walk
-really cute alleyway - band was playing nearby and it was a great people watching spot
I got an espresso irish coffee - thank you to the nice server who reccomdend I get this when I asked about coffeee drinks, said they get it from the coffee shop next door that sold me b/c bars usually don't have good coffee. When I was a server I hated getting coffee/espresso but he was so nice about it and he was busy - A+ :)
My last meal in Flagstaff, and it did the city justice! Â I only wish I came here more when I actually lived there, because nobody really talked about it much. Â We shared the garlic potato chips and poutin, while I had the pesto chicken sandwich. Â The garlic potato chips were delicious, but then again, it IS garlic and potato chips. Â The poutin, gravy fries topped with shredded mozzarella cheese was also good, though not the best I've ever had. Â I am personally not a big fan of sandwiches, but the chicken was juicy and the pesto was just right. Â The perfect all American comfort foods!
I accompanied my meal with a Hefeweizen which I did not enjoy very much, but my boyfriend's Sasquatch stout was yummy deliciousness. Â All I ever want from an oatmeal stout. Â We ordered too much food and the beer was super filling though! Â Portions are big, so watch out!
I actually really enjoyed my beer and food here. This is definitely a great place to stop by for a lunch and beer outside on the patio on a nice summer day.
I really enjoyed the Sasquatch stout, just delicious and very complimenting with my food. I didn't look at it, but I tasted like a very well brewed oatmeal stout. I had the garlic potato chips as an appetizer and the club sandwich with the side of poutine as a side. The garlic potato chips were so good that my girlfriend and I ate it all. It was a huge platter and probably even too big to share between two people haha. Too bad we ate it all because our food looked amazing when it came out. my club sandwich and my girlfriend's pesto chicken sandwich was pretty amazing. I attacked the poutine because it was really delicious. the french fries was fried so that it was crunchy and the gravy was delicious!
I just wished they had a bigger menu other than just sandwiches and burgers so it would be good to come here for dinner as well.
Man!
(Womyn!)
If you want a quick cheap beer, I guess we as a collective species have stumbled upon the right place and invented something is that called a Brewing Company.
Four dollars for their own beer, it was rather good too, though there was not patio
And a small child was offering me a piece of his/or/hers half -eaten catsup covered sandwich
But I spoke to Jon while I was here
And thought for a second, that I have not been to a place this relaxing since I left California
We stopped here on our way home from camping this past weekend. We wanted something warm after spending the night in the wild. This place is small but was not very busy on a Sunday at 11, though that isn't surprising. Staff is sort of indifferent and rude. I got the impression that they were really only interested in regulars and buddies since I saw a few come in and get treated much more warmly than we were. Their beer selection was limited; they only had 4 things on tap that day which was sort of a bummer since we came to a brewery expecting to be able to try any of their selections.
The beer they did have was good; husband had the sasquatch stout and I had the golden ale. The food was really good. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich and was a little afraid of the "ciabatta" since I've had be dry and stale so often but this was the right thickness and the right combination of chewy and crunchy. Husband had the green chili burger which was good. Fries were crispy and portions were large.
It seems like they have live music on Fridays and Saturdays which I think would really liven the place up but I probably wouldn't come back if nothing else but for the fact that I would feel unwelcome by the staff coming here on a "regular's" night.
So food = 4
Service = 2
Try to avoid the bar or drinks that come in a glass. Why? The smell of cleaning chemicals is reassuring, but overwhelming.
FBC always has a number of guest brews on tap, but if you do want to try the local stuff despite the warning, I'd pick the ESB. Round flavor and a pleasing hop finish. The Bartender will probably recommend the amber, which means we agree that the Pale Ale isn't worth your hard earned ducats.
The whiskey selection might be as good or better than Uptown Billiards, but because of the cleaning chemicals, go to uptown for your single malt fix.
lastly, to address the overall feel of the place: If Beaver street brewery or Lumberyard brewery are safe places to take your grandma, Flagstaff Brewing Company is a safe place to bring your old stoner buddy from college.
The patio is a cool hangout in the summer and it can be difficult to get a spot at any time after lunch.
Only 4 beers at a time is what you should know, apparently we did not and looked foolish when trying to order.
Despite having an extensive beer list they only offer 4 at any given time. ($4 per pint) This would be fine if each beer were fantastic however they were just ok.
I obtained a table on the patio and were given menu's however we had to beg after a long wait to just place a beer order. Another odd thing about this patio is that is sits by the entrance to a coffee shop however it allows smoking.
The menu is a bit uninspired with burgers, and sandwiches and other pub fare. Â There were a few veg options including the FBC veggie (6.25) which I got. Sauteed and chopped portobello mushroom onion, fresh tomatoes on top and your choice of cheese on a roll. The mushrooms and cheese were good however the bread was mediocre at best. The Belgian style fries did have a nice crunch to them.
Overall the terrible service detracted from the meal, as we were all tired and hungry and were not in the mood for long waits, even paying took a bit of time and effort.
Two generous 4-beer flights, please.
We were both impressed, if not totally blown away, by the four fresh brews we tried on a very rainy afternoon ambling about the historic downtown area. I was stunned that I actually liked an IPA for once; they typically taste like shampoo on my picky tongue -- IPA fans, take that as you like. The porter was my favorite.
We were quite happy with the $4 price tag, too.
Atmosphere is happily, generically pubby. Likable but not spectacular.
The supreme hummus platter fell short of the holy golden appetizer ratio (dip:dippers::1:1); it skewed far on the side of the hummus, even when the two carrot sticks and two celery sticks for dipping were used along with the floury pita triangles. But flavor-wise it was A-OK. They should ditch the oddly sweet artichoke hearts in the future or replace them with normal ones.
I could see hanging out here with friends for a long, casual night out, definitely.
Summers in Arizona are unlike anywhere else. When the temperatures hit the 115 degree mark Phoenicians will do just about anything to escape. This past weekend I headed for the hills and paid a visit to my favorite mountain town, Flagstaff. After dropping off our bags we headed over the tracks to Flag Brew. I'm sad to say that I spent four years living in Flagstaff as a student at NAU and this visit was my first at this local brewery.
They have an amazing patio where you can sit and enjoy summer nights like they were meant to be lived...at 75 degrees...under twinkling lights and with live music all around. I had the Weisspread Wheat, and was not disappointed. It was light, had a bite, and was just what I needed to compliment an already perfect evening.
The food was good too. While it's typical bar food, the build your own burger option has such a large number of add-ons that you could eat there 1000 times and never have the same combination twice. I settled for blue cheese and avocado, and it was delicious. The burger was probably a little too big for me, but I would absolutely order it again.
Between the beautiful weather, the comfy small town feel and the food and beer, I will definitely be back to Flagstaff Brewing Co many times before this summer comes to a close, and I am so pleased that eight years after starting my love affair with Flagstaff I stumbled across somewhere I hadn't been yet made me fall in love with the city all over again.
The whole gang went here and we took some friends. I had the catfish po boy and a side of garlic potato chips ( shared with the husband). ..The garlic chips were soooo soooo delicious. They were cut super thin, so when you bit into them they were so light and crispy that they practically dissolved in your mouth...they were covered with garlic, butter, and cilantro..I would come back just to have these!! The sandwich was inedible when first delivered, they fish was fried too long and the meat of the fish turn crunchy and hard as a rock..had to send it back, which I hate to do, when it returned it was cooked perfectly except it did not have the traditional cornmeal crust, it was just a regular fried fish batter...did not care for that at all, also the bun was toasted like it was on the previous sandwich, so the bread became soggy :(
Everyone else enjoyed their food: Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, Turkey Club, and a Cheeseburger, and the fries were not good, at all.
Service was great from our server and we would go back and maybe try some other items and those yummy chips!!
Great beer. Â They have an amazing selection of dark brews always on tap, and the staff is courteous. What is great about this place is how the handle sound for their shows. The sound isn't overpowering the entire bar, so you can sit the furthest away and still be able to converse with friends.
This is definitely Flagstaff in all of it's glory.
This is the "granola" brewpub of Arizona.
This place offers a small assortment of their own beers, together with a short list of "guest" beers - Dogfish, Lagunitas, Oak Creek, etc. Beers are rather average, and the guest list is too easy to substitute for your full pint once you've sampled their own offerings.
Food is quite good for such an unassuming place. Appetizers & menu choices are interesting, creative, and reasonably priced. Many traditional pub fare items are available too.
Atmosphere is casual, somewhat messy in appearance, and the staff is very "granola". I can appreciate the vegetarian offerings on the menu, but the unkempt hair & food/drink stains on employee clothing has to make you question the cleanliness of the place - especially what happens back in the kitchen.
Similarly, if you're dressed in smart casual clothing or better, you're going to feel out of place. Sandals, shorts, hemp shirt, and tattoo on display is par for the course here, so let it all hang out and enjoy their excellent food!
I sat down in the tree lined patio between the afternoon rolling monsoon wet weather. The patio had a lively assortment of young and old enjoying the relatively cool summer afternoon. Â A nearby older couple kept close reins on their yapping dog just outside the wrought iron fence while a younger couple controlled their young kids by keeping them in Belgian Style Fries.
I ordered the four beer sampler along with the smoked turkey sandwich with raspberry sauce and caramelized onions. Â The Blackbird Porter was probably the best of the four while waiting for the sandwich. Â The "not burger" sandwich with the caramelized onions on sourdough met my taste bud expectations. Â Rather than fries I opted for the Baked French Onion soup which also turned out to be a good choice.
Just as I finished the monsoons started in earnest. I got soaked walking across the street to my vehicle....
Two things make this place worth seeking out:
1) Their spacious, shaded, and lively patio. Â A perfect spot for day-drinking.
2) Their Blackbird Porter -- porter being my favorite type of beer and the fact that they brew it very well here.
All other aspects are just blase yadda-yadda filler. Â Who cares when you have those two hallmarks going for you?
This is probably my favorite spot in Flagstaff on a consistent basis.
The food is delicious, the beer on tap is plentiful, and the crowd is laid back. There is usually live music on the weekends which lends itself nicely to beer drinking and shenanigans.
The only tough part may be finding a seat in the evening as it gets pretty bumpin, so my recommendation is to check it out for lunch. The food and beer will not disappoint.
