My sister-in-law had her baby nearby in Rhinebeck so my fiance's family and I ducked out for an early dinner while visiting one weekend. At first we were a little skeptical as it was super dark inside and we were bringing a very fussy 4 year old with us. A waitress assured us they had food choices for her so we were sold and asked to sit outside as it was gorgeous out.
Our waitress outside was very pleasant and accommodating. Everyone's food came quickly and was delicious. Our table formed kind of a natural playpen with the stonewall outside and we were able to corral the four year old in to her own little play area. Thus keeping the wait staff, toddler, and ourselves all happy. The inside of the restaurant is neat as well. Definitely worth a stop if you are in town.
I remember Foster's as being a charming, cozy local pub w/ good service and reasonably priced food. The last two times we returned -for lunch last October and again last December- something had changed. The food was more expensive, but the quality had gone downhill and the portions got smaller. My French Onion soup was watery and greasy, not at all like the soup I used to get there. My husband got the French Dip, which he said used to be tastier and better prepared. The service was almost non-existant. The waitress took forever to take our orders and was abrupt; not even a smile. I had to get up and ask another table for salt and pepper. After ignoring my waving at her, I also got up and went to the waitress's station to get a pitcher of water for our table. I had to ask another server to get her to bring us our check. She left the dirty dishes on our table without removing them. To my mind, all of this is totally unexcusable in any restaurant with waiter/waitress service. The ladies' room was badly lit and not clean. In fact, the whole place looked grimy. We were extremely disappointed that what used to be one of our favorite places in Rhinebeck has lost it's touch and it's personality. You can get much better food and service for the same price almost anywhere else in Rhinebeck. Or Hudson or Saugerties or Woodstock, for that matter.
Review Source:Clean and cozy but NOT impressed with the staff or food quality, especially at the prices! Chicken was pounded so thin it was like dry paper and their "specialty" london broil was stringy, tough and unappetizing. Â Their green beans were drenched in butter and oil. Â We've been in the past and had pretty good experiences so decided to give it another shot, definitely crossing this one off our list. Â You can get 5 star food across the street at Terrapin for almost the same $$.
Review Source:I knew something was up when the food portions got smaller and the menu prices got higher. I guess they needed money for the so-called renovations. The place had charm, character and the patina of age. Now it has all of the grit of a suburban Applebee's. Once again greed has destroyed a local landmark.
Review Source:I've probably eaten at Fosters 100 times over the last 30 years. Used to be great, but the service on my most recent visit was slowwww. Was with a large party. Kitchen (or waitress) forgot my order and I wound up eating 10 minutes after everyone else at the table started. Ridiculous. Plus, the server was loud and obnoxious.
Review Source:Grew up in Kingston, used to be a family treat to go here. Recently took my wife and son while on Vacation. Nice to see that it hasn't changed much in the intervening 30 years.
Can't give it 5 stars - Not that kind of restaurant, But it is, (and was) a great place for a family meal, good food at reasonable (if not cheap) prices.
Had the London Broil and Lasagna, both as good as I remember.
Highly recommended, both for a good meal, and for reliving childhood memories.
Foster's Coach House brings back many good memories when was a kid living in Poughkeepsie. I remember my dad taking my brother, and myself up there on the occasional saturday night and ordering the turkey sandwich...mmmnn they were good and lots of food. I am intown from atlanta and went to see a movie at upstate films last night, so we decided to have dinner at Fosters....service was great meal was great. I had the salmon with mashed potatoes and peas....yummy!
Review Source:The service here was abhorrent. I have worked in many busy restaurants in New York City and if any of our staff had ever acted this way they would be surely fired. Our waitress at the Tavern (a tall older blonde woman) had only a few tables to look after but still took her sweet time in taking our order or even bring us water, she seemed very stressed out despite the simple work environment and spoke very curtly to us. We had to flag down the other waitstaff members in order to ask any questions.
When it was time for our check we paid partly in cash and the rest on the card. After signing the correct receipt and leaving a generous tip despite how awful the service had been. Â We then left, only to have our waitress chase us down in the parking lot demanding us to give her an itemized receipt (which we had never received to begin with.) She proceeded to call her coworkers "fucking stupid" (they had been very nice to us in comparison to her) and tried to blame us for the lost receipt whilst treating us like idiotic children. My question was: if we had already paid why would she need the itemized receipt anyway? It is definitely not the customer's responsibility to find a piece of paper she never handed us. Then that she had the audacity to make us wait in the parking lot while she bad mouthed her coworkers, her behavior was appalling. Â The food was passable but the terrible service made me want to give this no stars.
I've only come here a handful of times, but every time has been pretty memorable. I usually only stop by for the live music, and this is a great venue for it. In the summer the bands play outside on the patio and it's really cool sitting under an umbrella with a drink and watching the band play. They have really good fries; that's the only thing I remember about the food. So I guess the rest of the food was just alright. They also have an excellent drink selection, but it tends to get busy on weekends so come early and get a seat!
Review Source:Relax all naysayers- what you see is what you get here. If the expectation is a chat at the bar, classically good pub food and to be bothered only with whether to stay for another round, more dip or head back later for a laid back dinner- go here. The bar tenders and company are great- the owner is a doll. During a short midweek stay, myself and a friend went to look for a place to relax and have a beer- or 3. Not a fancy expectation in mind, no forethought and unapologetically forgetting it is daytime makes for a few new friends and acquaintances. I believe I will continue my patronage when visiting the area indefinitely. Bravo for hospitality and chivalry in Foster's form.
Review Source:"I really wasn't aware of Fosters being more of a "bar crowd". I've been going to Fosters on a regular basis for atleast 4 or so years. My family and I would drive all the way from Poughkeepsie for the great potatoe salad.
I am sad to say, but today was by far the worst ever day ever as a father and a resturaunt patron. After finding what looked like a bone, but as sharp as a piece of glass that I had to pull out my daughters mouth from the potatoe salad I came to love at Fosters.... Instead of a "sorry" when I felt obligated to bring it to their attention because there was other families eating it and if not caught quick enough could have become a serious issue.
I'm not even one to complain, but when it comes to my childs safety and the saftey of others I must speak up. So, the wait staff or the woman who i was told was the owner, that told me "It was no big deal" and wanted to argue with me about it. The so called ower came over smelling like alchohol and cheap perfume just arguing about nonsense with a wooden spoon breaking or it could have been a chicken bone.... "chicken bones in the potatoe salad" and stormed off. Maybe its an easy mistake to make by dropping extremly sharp chicken bones in salads, but atleast the woman could have came over like any normal decent person would have and atleast said "sorry".
I will no longer tell family and friends in the area to eat at this tavern. I will also change my "Liked" status for this place, and I will pass this post on to all my friends in Rhinebeck and surrounding areas that this is not a safe family friendly tavern".
Not the cheapest but not as pricey as Terrapin. Portions were large, meat tender/flavorful, nice fresh veg and wallet friendly drinks (Kettel One Cosmo- 8bux). Good service even when busy. Girlfriends and I were in town for NYS Sheep and Wool show and we pleased enough to dine there twice.
Review Source:I've been going to Foster's since I was a very young child growing up in Rhinebeck. There is no restaurant like it. The dark atmosphere is comfortable and family-style. The food has been consistently good for over fifteen years, and you can always count on the London Broil sandwich to be phenomenal. Not the atmosphere for a first date or for tourists from the city, perhaps, but whenever I need some comfort food and the feeling of home I head back to Foster's Coach House.
Review Source:While the prices are high, the atmosphere of this restaurant tavern has provided me, a Northern Dutchess Co. native, lots of good times. Â Although I can't speak much about the current days, I can, however speak about this place within the last 5-10 years, as I have been there at least once or twice due to the higher prices.
If you're looking for some place different, this restaurant might be for you. Â With prices ranging about $7 for just a plain old hamburger(and about a dollar more for a cheeseburger), this place might very well be for you.
But hamburgers and cheeseburgers aren't their only two menu options. They sell a range of other things like Sliced London Broil, grilled cheese, BLT, or Grilled Chicken(All sandwiches are served with your choice of Potato Salad, Macaroni Salad, French Fries, Steak Fries, Cup Of Soup or House Salad). Their full menu is provided at: http://www.fosterscoachh… .
They also, every year, set up a large booth at our county fair(the second largest in the state) and the next-smallest to the State Fair in Syracuse, NY, but expect prices to be higher(their menu for the BOOTH at the FAIR can be found also on their website at: http://www.fosterscoachh… ).
I remember days when the walls used to be covered in business cards. Â No more are those days. Â The owners decided to stop all that, and decided to keep the walls plain and simple. Â Only a few cards remain every once-and-a-while.
I especially love the horse statue, just as you walk inside the door(being this is a former tavern).
I was pretty disappointed overall. Â The food was marginal at best. Â The burger was barely edible and best eaten sans meat. Â The fish and chips was not edible (at least the fish part). Â The fries were ok. Â Everything was at least mildly "off." Â
The service was great.
As others mentioned, the decor is very "old school" - it is what it is.
Bar fare in a very charming setting. It's old school and has been a local jaunt for a long time in the heart of quaint Rhinebeck.
Didn't have enough items to make a qualified opinion but I will say that the cheeseburger I had was small, fresh, cooked precisely as requested and might I add, quite tasty, would get it again.
Grilled cheese, yummy, the salad as garnish? or was it really salad? Not good.
At the end of the day the food was trumped by the decor the service filled the voids nicely and the experience was pleasant, affordable and good enough for repeat visits without the 'urge' to fight or flight.
Foster's is an institution in Rhinebeck. Â I love Foster's. Â I love the decor, the carriage phone box, the stables, the booths, the bar smell (kind of like a UK pub with no smoke), and the old school steakhouse food. Â Here is the key to Foster's- it is mainly a steakhouse/tavern. Â If you don't like red meat or buttery seafood, DON'T go. Â If you remember going to your grandparents' favorite restaurant in the 60s, 70s or 80s, Foster's will bring back some hopefully good memories. Â Foster's has amazing London Broil, steaks, scallops, and buttery filet of sole. Â I love their baked potatoes and their French dressing is perfect.
Review Source:Another stinky upstate restaurant.
Went in about three times over the years, and walked out every time.
Right when you come through the door, you get an old musty bar smell -- actually worse than that.
It doesn't improve as you enter the restaurant.
The entry way is actually painted to look like a stable. Â But a stable probably smells better.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE! I grew up in Hyde Park and this ha ALWAYS been my favorite restaurant, hands down! When I was little, people used to pin their business cards to the wall in the back room and I thought that was the coolest thing...they have remodeled the walls since then, but I still remember it.
When we can't think of any other place to go, we always end up at Foster's. It's casual and has amazing food, from the roll and butter to the sundaes! I have my staple, I get the Combo of Sirloin and Fried Shrimp with garlic pasta side (you have to ask for this as the waiter doesn't usually mention the garlic sauce). It is to DIE for, I always say I'm going to change my meal the next time I go, but never do. I get the salad with creamy blue cheese every time. The meals are always the same, nothing ever changes. My mom and dad also get the combo (different items) but are ALWAYS amazed at how great it is.
Very sad that the long-time owner recently passed away, but I hope nothing inside ever changes!!
Came from Jersey City for the Rhinebeck Antique Fair - which was big disappoint for us. Much smaller than anticipated, mostly out of price range, and though there were some lovely things, nothing that I fell in love with to pay the price tags for.
Went to Coachhouse based on Yelp! reviewers and it was lovely. The waitress was adorable and sweet, the building itself, dark and comfy, with a real genuine feel about it. The music overhead could have been better, something that fits the antique building would add to the ambiance. The food was great! I had the london broil sandwhich well done with the salad. Â My bf ordered the french dipwith au jus and a app of fried clam strips. SO GOOD...esp the au jus! dark, salty, full of flavor! The london broil, though I ordered it well done was soft and tasty!
I highly recommend to stop here!
If you go for lunch, you'll be in and out at speeds that can compete with McDonalds. But whether you go for lunch or dinner, definitely order the soup. Even if it's a soup you don't like, you'll love it here. They have the best soup in the town and the best turkey dinner you could ask for.
The scenery is also quite interesting with its old fashioned look and dim style lighting. Making it a romantic place to take a loved one for dinner. Along route 9 in Rhinebeck makes it a convenient stop if you're passing through town and well worth the stop.
Foster's has an authenticity that every chain like Applebee's tries poorly to copy. Â This place is the real deal. Â Are you going to get the most amazing meal on the planet? Â Probably not. Â But you are going to get a large, tasty portion at a fair price. Â
Foster's is one of the few remaining places that the locals (I'm married to one) and their parent's still know from the old days when Rhinebeck was still a sleepy little town on the Hudson River and not a glitzy week-ender's resort. Â This is one of the few places where you'll still find locals on a regular basis. Â
The food is typical of a steak house- Â lots of meats and salads with some Italian fare mixed in (I'm a big fan of their Chicken Parm). Â The owner and long-time chef passed away recently, and the family has gone out of their way to preserve the food as it had always been prepared, and they are doing a good job of it. Â Also of note is their London Broil.
If you're looking for a flabbergastingly good meal in the area, there are tons of other places to get it within 500 feet (Remember, the Culinary Institute of America is less than 20 miles away- it's nearly impossible to get a bad meal in this town)... Â but if you are looking for authentic, real hometown food and service, come to Foster's.
I love that I've been able to come to Foster's for years and it just hasn't changed. Â I love the decor and the feel when you first walk in; it doesn't have the fancy-pants type vibe that the rest of Rhinebeck has, and I enjoy it just like that. Â In terms of food, I usually only got cheeseburgers or grilled cheese and soup, but it was great :) Â Great staff of locals and friends, so I can't wait till the next time I head to New York to eat here!
Review Source:Normally, I would give a place like this three stars, because of its standard selection, and kitchy, horserace-themed decorations. Â But I'm giving it an extra star for being a true, affordable holdout for locals in Rhinebeck (compared with all the other expensive stores/restaurants built for tourists owned and operated by non-locals). Â Probably one of the only places on Rhinbeck's main drag that has been there for more than ten years - this place has history...and friendly service, and cheap food and beer (I think its been around since just after WWI). Â Good for families and/or people t watch sports games at the bar, and/or people on a budget (me).
