I like this place. Â It was a night to meet up with an old friend of mine and while a place way out of my way I would not normally go to it was a good choice. Â
I ordered the steak sandwich and a Maker's and the two are a good set. Â While not a great sandwich it was good enough I'd order it again. Â Had great service from the bartender and everything was taken care of quickly. Â I also learned to play Keno that night and again the bartender was right on top of things getting tickets processed right away. Â It was also a nice surprise when other friends just happen to show up, ones I don't see very often and who happen to live right down the street. Â
It's one of those places that if you don't expect it to be anymore than it is you will get what you want.
My son and I recently visited Garvey's. Â I have lived in the Oakville community for 16 years and continue to be amazed at how people who weren't raised in Oakville can be treated as an outsider. Â Garvey's is a prime example.
I hadn't visit Garvey's often because the smoke was offensive. Â But since the smoking ban took affect, I began frequenting the establishment. Â The stale smoke smell lingers but is tolerable.
During my last visit, I was told by the host there would be a 10 minute wait - I clearly indicated a table for two, as I was escorted by my son. Â There was a couple and a mother and her children ahead of us. Â They were seated within 10 minutes. Â While my son and I waited, a young couple entered the restaurant. Â It was obvious they knew the host who I believe is one of the owners.
As the host chatted with the young couple, he offered them a recently available table and seated them before us. Â I was upset and felt disregarded.
My son wanted to stay because he was hungry and didn't want to wait at another restaurant. Â I wanted to take my money elsewhere.
When the host returned I asked him why he seated them before us, and he stumbled on his words, making excuses such as saying we were still waiting on another party. Â He then stated he had a table open and pointed to a table that had been vacant since we arrived. Â And it was conveniently located outside the kitchen door so we were able to uncomfortably experienced the servers coming in and out and the door banging to and fro.
The server was nice, not overly attentive but it is a family sports bar, so that's okay. Â The bosco sticks my son ordered were overcooked and the dough was tough. Â My hamburger, ordered medium, was burnt on the outside and the bun was smaller than the burger and dry on the outer edges. Â The portion of the french fries was too small - no more than 1/2 cup.
The host was disrespectful to us. Â The food was not properly prepared. Â I will not return to Garvey's.
Garvey's is an easy type of sports bar. You can roll in wearing your pajamas and be treated no differently than in a business suit. And you could order pretty much any item on the menu and get the same result- good, but standard, bar food. As noted, the smoke is overwhelming, and the smoking ban will do them good as a small restaurant. Their wings are decent- the trashed wings were nice and crispy. I had the spicy pepper chicken sandwich, which was delicious. Â Service was friendly, and prices are very affordable. It is a staple of Oakville, and I'm quite sure the decor has not changed in the ten years since I left high school nearby.
Review Source:The store front of the restaurant does not face the road, it seems almost hidden in a very small strip mall, two or 3 stores big.
I believe it is the wall paper Hanging store that is the store facing the road.
I was terribly sad that my breakfast place was closed early so I trusted my little Yelp app to take me to where I could sate my sad, and a bit portly, tummy.
This is a great place to have a casual meal with one huge exception... the smell of stale smoke. :(
The service is great!
The salad's are HUGE! Â I'm talking about a head of lettuce here! The bowl is bigger then your head. I had half of it and had the rest later for dinner at work and it was still good.
My husband had the buffalo chicken wrap and Loved it!
The service is great and cute! Â I don't usually notice the cute part but he looked so much like Jude Law! Â All I'd do is bake him cookies though. lol. Happens with having a baby brother older then 30, I feel maternal to all younger then my brother. hehe.
We will be back to try the hamburgers, as I see that seems to be a favorite.
It is a very very causal place and a nice environment when we went.
Garvey's is amazing. Another staple of Telegraph restaurants. I love going here. Their chicken modiga pizza is absolutely amazing. It's probably the second best pizza in STL, that being second to Imo's obviously! They also have great wings. I my fiance due to the workers of this establishment so it holds a dear place in my heart :)
Review Source:I love this restaurant. I go here a lot with my boyfriend for a nice casual lunch or dinner. Everyone there is so friendly and you don't have to worry about how you're dressed. The place is mostly clean and there may be a few straw wrappers here and there but it's hard to be perfect. I always leave Garvy's very satisfied. I will always come back to enjoy a great meal.
Review Source:I like the food here. Â They have a great cheddar cheese burger. Â I really enjoy the Chicken Modiga Wrap. Â The Sides are good (not great). Â It isn't a very big place, and the no smoking section is only around 4 tables in the back corner. Â They need a better ventilation system because if you are a non-smoker you will be overwhelmed by the smoke.
Review Source:Looking and feeling like a giant freight train just threw me against the wall, and a headache that all the coffee and aspirin in the world couldn't make better, I knew I was in serious trouble. Luckily Garvy's saves the day.
Garvey's is a notch nicer than a hole in the wall grill, but the food is what keeps me coming back. The tenderloin sandwich is a delicious mouthful of sizzled steak and provolone. Appetizers are awesome. Toasted Ravioli, and jumbo sized hot wings with blu cheese and ranch sauces make me feel much better. Â
The restaurant itself isn't the nicest, but at noon on a Sunday you can't ask for anything more appealing than good food cheap.
The bar, (not that I needed any more at this point), rocks specials everyday, and Nascar Sundays (Really not into Nascar either) offers pitchers of beers for way cheap. The only problem the bar is full of people watching NASCAR. Overall, a decent place to catch a game, some drinks, and some grub.
Oh, and if you are fortunate to come here on a Sunday lunch trip, the rest of the tables are filled with twenty somethings feeling and looking just like you.
