Great place to hang out. Heard about the Green Parrot from a local bartender. We asked where she goes to drink after work and her answer without skipping a beat was the green parrot. We found the crowd at the bar to be very friendly and very local. Everyone offered advice on local places to eat and drink. Live music was an added bonus. We had a great time with all the bartenders. Even with them knowing we were not locals, they gave us great service.
Review Source:Can't stop laughing as I just read when I went onto the site to write this review that, "40 something's think this is a nifty spot". Â Funny for many reasons, including the fact that my wife and I were in Key West to celebrate our 40th birthdays, and 'because it's true'!
Went in late afternoon on a rainy Monday and per the Green Parrot "Cultural Calendar", they had bingo that evening, so we returned after dinner to play a few cards worth. Â A mixed crowd of down-to-earth locals and the same type of tourists for the most part. Â
A divey spot with a ton of character and seriously-$2.50 pints of Yuengling, which is a treat for us, since it is impossible to find in the Midwest and we have to "bootleg" it back when we go out east a couple times per year. Â
The jukebox hasn't been changed for 20 years, I'll bet and the layout is perfect. Â The return trip for bingo and a couple of early evening night caps was fun. Â Sitting near German tourists who were very into their bingo, while enjoying a warm evening on the last night of our trip was memorable. Â "Das Bingo" is German for Bingo per Google and we yelled it when leaving the bar for a proper salute to the Green Parrot.
Not to be confused with the "Blue Oyster"
Cool grungy dive bar that you only walk into because somebody recommended it. That being said....I generally don't take advice from my redneck friends on principal. But when my longtime pal with a liver that probably looks like Swiss cheese says: " ....Ya gotta go to Green Parrot....coldest beer in Key West. Bring me a t-shirt". I figured what the hell.
The beer was damn cold. Â Now I have to say that after scuba diving all morning then going to lunch and eating collosal shrimps at the Rusty Anchor, I came down with the shakes paired with a fever that made me break out in beads of sweat the size of basket balls on my forehead. Â The icy cold beer at the Green Parrot helped put that fire out quick.
Perhaps the lack of air conditioning was a contributing factor....either way my buddies claim held weight.
Great people watching and views of the golf cart traffic jams outside are worth the visit. Dont miss the prancy guy with the floppy pink hat jogging by....(apparently a common occurance in KW). Good times man.
Bottom Line: Owwwwww.....brain freeze. Crap....forgot the T-shirt.
It started out friendly, warm, and homey. Good time vibes. The juke box rocked beyond time and space. Comfy, people smiling-- until I asked for a Mojita, which I make all the time because I grow a mint garden between my chickens and the Black  Angus pasture.  A mojito ain't no big deal in my world. But the bartender turned bright red and said he would NOT make that drink, like it was a silly tourist toy, like a Hurricane in the Vieux Carre.  So on one hand, you got this cool old beatnik bar that loves locals and grooves with a democratic spirit blah-blah-blah, and on the other hand you got these bartenders who will not stoop down to the mint patch and make a simple drink that I have made for years.  What the hell?  Get over yourselves, jack-wads.  You're acting like Republicans who want the Bible read in the public schools, kind of stiff and walking straight into stupid.
Review Source:I write this review reluctantly. I'm not so sure I want a bunch of tourists descending on our local bar!
This joint is just a block off the main path but it is worlds away. They can spot a tourist at twenty paces and I'm fairly certain they charge them more for drinks though I'm not certain. Let me tell you about "our" spot in Key West by highlighting a sad but kind event.
Last time we were there (maybe 8 months ago) a couple of bouncers (lovingly known as "dance instructors") had been attacked by a few assholes who were stealing stuff out of the basket of a bicycle parked out front (remember this is an island). They were beaten pretty badly and apparently had a LOT of medical bills. A fundraising event was held with several great local bands, a silent auction to rival any silent auction, and unbounded generosity. Each person who won the 50/50 raffle donated it to the cause, crazy rich people literally (yes I am using that word correctly) threw money on the stage, and everyone donated what they could and more to these sweet sweet fellows. One showed up later in the day still in his wheelchair from his injuries and it was pretty powerful. Huge jars of money were routinely brought in as wait staff from all over the island donated their tips that day.
So yes, this is a great place to have a few drinks and hear some very cool music but it is also a bar run by a family of people from all over who serve another family from all over. It's not just a bar - it's a joint. A really cool joint.
The Green Parrot is awesome. Â Do not expect the unexpected of the Green Parrot. Â It is a dive bar in Key West. Â It is usually packed. Â People will spill beer on you. Â That beer will be cold. Â You will end up talking to people you may not have normally wanted to talk to. Â Those could be the same people spilling beer on you.
Seriously, there's good live music, friendly bartenders, a decent beer list, and everyone is having a good time. Â You cannot go wrong.
We were frequent visitors here during our stay in Key West, mostly for the music, but also the occasional mid day refreshment on the way home from a walk on Duval. They have bands almost every night. Sometimes there is a sound check at 5:30 and a 10:00 show later on. The acts are really good and there is a lot of variation in types of music. We even came New Year's Eve which was a blast. It gets pretty crowded and the crowd spills out onto the street. I noticed quite a few assholes during my time there but it is probably unavoidable in a town full of drunken tourists. Two fun facts: live webcam broadcasts the happenings in the bar. Good luck finding the camera. In their Bloody Marys they serve a couple pickled green beans. These are delicious and addictive. If you need to pick up a jar so you can get your fix at home, look for them at Faustos!
Review Source:Massively fun place. Always good bands with no cover. Last Weds I had a great time with some midwest parrotheads listening to the New Riders of the Purple Sage, a favorite band of mine back before many of their present fans were born. Drink prices are very reasonable for a place with a big tourist draw. They were slammed the night I was there, so the service was a little slow but I can't project how it is on a regular night.
Review Source:Not your typical "small" dive bar. Has a bit more character to it and its actually pretty big inside with the windows and doors usually wide open. Yes the drinks are cheap cheap cheap. The bartenders are friendly and so are the customers inside. It's on a hidden side street off of Duval so may be a little tricky to find but for me it was easy as it was right next to the Truman Annex where I was staying.
Review Source:Great unpretentious place to have a beer after a long hard day (lol) in Key West. They often have live jam/folk music, and the crowd in extremely laid back to say the least. You cannot be underdressed for this bar! Enjoy the good beer selection, kitschy decor, and free popcorn (because it's never good to drink on an empty stomach!).
I was joking that we were just getting a drink down the street (U.S. 1) even though it was a few hours' drive down the street. :)
This bar is large, spacious, offers interesting artwork and- things- around the walls, and has a very layed back feel.
We visited the bar in the afternoon (by the way, happy hour runs from 4-7), and it was already pretty full. The crowd was a little older (35+), and it appeared that there was a good mix of tourists and locals. The bar tenders were not extremely friendly, but they weren't rude either. I guess, this being a dive bar and all, you shouldn't expect much more than good drinks!
Speaking of drinks, I ordered a rum and diet coke, and it was good. I guess I'm used to really heavy-handed bar tenders, because the taste of rum was not too prominent, but my fiance (and former bar tender) assured me the ratios were spot on.
If you're in the neighborhood, this is a fun spot to check out.
Cool place.
No AC, but a lot of fans and ice cold drinks help a lot!
Definitely worth the drop in to check it out.
We went to Happy Hour which starts at 4pm. All well liquor and (only 3 beers) miller light, bud light, and one other cheap non light beer is also reduced. something like $3-4 each.
My only beef is the bartenders are not very friendly. Parking can be a bitch as well but that happens throughout Key West.
Smoking is also allowed.
Cheers.
This bar is an institution in Key West! It is a must while visiting. There is so much to look at and take in while taking a breather from Duval Street.
I love that locals go here but they are still friendly to the tourists, the drinks aren't pricey and they have a good selection of beer on tap. If I'm being honest here (and this is what Yelp is for.. honesty) this bar is not much to look at. Which is why it is so charming to me. It's a no frills, kinda divey, watering hole.
I also hear that this is the oldest bar in Key West. I'd stop back here in a heart beat.
Cheers!
Think of your local dive bar at home. Â Add tons of bacchanalia on the walls. Â Add a layer of dirt and crud. Â Mix in a dirty glass or two. Â Sprinkle in a dash of tourists, by the thousands. Â Add hippies, truck drivers, fisherman, homeless people, drunks, end of the liners, bands, clueless europeans, artists, alcoholics, and good time girls. Â Mix until well seasoned. Â Bake until you get a tasty Green Parrot.
This is a Key West Institution. Â Always has been. Â You'll either leave and never return, or you'll go back every time.
One of the best bars in Key West. They always have bands on! And they're usually really good bands as well. And never a cover charge.
Sundays they do sound check which is my favourite day to go. In fact... i'm currently sporting a nice little hangover from being here last night.
The bar has a great vibe and plenty of space for the crowds.
I was teetering between 3 and 4 stars on this one and as you can see, I went with a 4. Â Duh. Â
Stopped in on Wednesday night while trying to find a bar off of Duval Street to hang out at and maybe see more of the locals scene. Â It was definitely less touristy than Duval...which was nice. Â The bartenders were surprisingly down-to-earth and friendly compared to some other bars in Key West....they were welcoming. Â
Definitely more eyeballs on you here than the more touristy places but people were still friendly. Â The drinks weren't as expensive and the views from inside were pretty cool as it was on a corner. Â There's not much air circulation in this bar compared to others that are freezing but thankfully I was positioned under a large fan that cooled off the heat exhaustion I was experiencing. Â
There was a "Uke-off" going on when I was there so a ton of people were jamming on ukelele's and selling ukelele stuff. Â There was even a raffle to win a Uke so it was pretty festive and fun. Â Gets pretty crowded around sunset. Â
I'd recommend stopping in if you're in Key West and tire of some of the craziness on Duval Street.
On the one rainy afternoon we had on our trip to Key West, the Green Parrot gave shelter, entertainment, popcorn, locals, and Green Parrot Ale to whet our already wet whistles.
Just when we thought things had gone so well, they got well-er! Â A live blues band got up there and blew the roof off of the place. Â
Of all the music in Key West, this was one of the better places to see it- just some real talent up there, not begging people in from the street - but drawing them in.
Love this place! Please allow me to tell you about my two nights at Green Parrot:
Due to the proximity of this bar to our hotel and the fact that everytime we walked by people were practically hanging out of the windows laughing and having a blast, we ended up stopping by twice. Â Both times ended up being so much fun. Once there was a great band playing, and the other time there were hoola hoops and the Canadian Navy. Enough said. Go here. It IS Key West.
Cool dive bar in Key West! Went in with a friend of mine for a drink and a game of pool. Love the size of the place and all of the awesome photos and memorabilia on the walls. I didn't get to see any live music but I hear a lot of the acts are awesome!
Two major things stand out to me when I think of my time at Green Parrot: it was very hot and very smoky. If you're going to go, maybe do so at night once it's cooled off, and make sure you don't have a problem with a ton of smoke in your face.
Drinks were good and the bartender was on top of it, and it was so fun to be able to relax while I embarrassed myself playing pool. Consider it for a stop in the evening for a drink and fun people!
I miss you Green Parrot! Â This bar was our very favorite watering hole in Key West.
We first arrived here after a long walk on a hot day, and started with two vodka tonics. Â The place was packed on a Saturday afternoon, but the servers were efficient and friendly and the price was right ($4.50 each for well vodka). Â We found a seat against the windows near the bar and were amazed and delighted that they had our very favorite spring beer, Oberon from Bell's Brewery in Kalamazoo, MI on tap, in early March! Â WHAT?!?! Â So excited, the bartender said they'd had it about two weeks. Â So that's where our show went the rest of the day. Â SO GOOD!
The bar is located on Whitehead, just a block from the famous "Mile 0" sign on Route 1, and off the craziness and touristy crap that is Duval Street. Â They frequently feature live music, and the whole vibe is just laid back and friendly, with lots of locals in evidence. Â
I wish I was there sipping a cold one right now, although I'm equally glad we left Key West the very day the first of the Spring Breakers were arriving...
I have found my CHEERS. Â If you want talented LIVE music acts, great drinks, and a fun "come as you are" atmosphere, then head to The Parrot!
This is an institution in Key West. Â Always amazing live music on the weekends. Â Soundchecks at 530 are awesome for Happy Hour! Â Live Jazz on Sundays! Â What more could you ask for!
I have heard and seen some of the best shows I have seen in years at the Parrot! Â I can always be assured that when I walk in, I am always greeted with a smile, a handshake, a "How are you doing?", and a cold beer. Â Thank You Green Parrot for what you give to us locals in Key West!
Despite being just a mere block away from Duval Street it feels worlds away.
While there is a smattering of tourists popping in you'll find mostly locals enjoying this great bar. Â I went twice during my visit and it was a welcome reprieve from Duval Street. Â I enjoyed it as a tourist but I'd enjoy it more as a local.
The skinny:
Good live music. Â Decent beer selection. Â Decent prices. Â A little rough around the edges. Â Above average divebar-esque bathrooms. Â Solid bartenders. Â Solid patrons. Â No A/C but lots of fans and wind circulation. Â Lots of seating.
If you are the type who enjoys Hard Rock Cafes do not go here*. Â If you're the type who cannot remember the last time you stepped foot in a Hard Rock Cafe...go here.
*Normally, I hate being associated with the average tourist. Â When I travel, I seek out as much as I can off the beaten path. Â This is especially true for places I plan on patronizing related to restaurant and bar establishments. Â I've worked in this industry...and, well, if you're an obvious tourist, in a touristy bar/restaurant destination...you're server/bartender basically hates you (nine times out of ten).
Awesome place to check out when you are in town. Â We spent a few hours here when we wanted a nice night of relaxed good times.
They have darts, pool and a jukebox which is all you really need to have a good night out when you don't feel like grinding to the newest Chris Brown song on Duval.
This is one of those "world famous" landmarks that you must hit when you visit a place for the first time.
Great vibe, awesome live tunes to chill out and a local atmosphere that gives it a unique feeling.
The drinks are not expensive at all and the bartenders go with the flow, this is not a place to go to see and be seen, but rather off the beaten path a place to enjoy some really local Key West flavor.
I had a great time at the Green Parrot the first time I went, and I'll be sure to hit that place up next time I go.
Thanks for the tip Jaeger Pete.
It's a little further down from the other bars, but it's large, and spacious, ghetto-rustic, and a cool seeming 'local vibe'.
In my mind it's kinda like the Key West version of Miami's Transit Lounge, but much more dressed down. Â They even bring in some of the acts that you might see at Transit. Â When I was there they had Suenelo playing.
You ready to get your drink and good time vibe on? If so, read on.
This is the real deal. I have read that the term "Happy Hour" Â originated in the 1920's and was slang for a scheduled entertainment period on board a ship during which boxing and wrestling bouts took place, this was a valuable opportunity for sailors to let off the steam accumulated during the long periods at sea. "Happy" in this context meant slightly drunk.
If that is true then its meaning is still valuable today. People go to the Parrot to blow off steam and have fun.
This is a locals bar for sure. No fruity drinks. No top 40. A bizarre cross-section of nearly every local demographic on Key West might be found here at any given moment. In the first twenty minutes I was there I met a 75(+/- since he was so leathered age was irrelevant) year old guy that spends six months in Vermont and six in Key West. A lady who moved to Key West some ten months ago. A Vietnam vet with a Dachsund therapy dog that had a little leather jacket on and road on the gas tank of his owner's Harley. A guy who played rugby for the local Key West team - I bet no one ever asks them to travel. And they were all nice!
The live music was hot. A blues band that actually sounded like they might have been pulled from a dingy, smoke-filled blues joint in Chicago.
The bartenders were cool. As in these folks had their act together. None of that waiting around and flagging a bartender down stuff. Nope. They come to you. And you don't wait all that long.
As you can tell, I loved the place and look forward to when I can return.
KW at it's best: an institution (in any community). Off of Duval.....literally open 24/7 (slightly).
Those who go, go with an appetite for liquification. No other reason.
Slighly off of Duval, easy walking to anywhere or whistle a cab to your next stop - another pub, hotel, B&B or home.
Plenty of places in KW to wet your tongue.....but the Parrott is by far the most colorful and/or curious of the town's 'joints'.
There's little I can add to tout the awesomeness of the Green Parrot that hasn't already been touted, but I'll give it a whirl anyway.
Firstly: No cover bands. That means that if you still haven't got enough renditions of "Brown-Eyed Girl" or "Jammin'" or "Cheeseburger in Paradise," steer clear of the Parrot. There's plenty of live music to be had, typically of the afro-pop-blues-soul-country-or some derivative thereof variety--but covers of "Reelin' in the Years" are precious few.
Secondly: Speaking of music, their jukebox is superbly curated. That means you'll find exactly the kind of music that you should be listening to in a Key West dive bar; rock, country, blues, funk and soul. That also means that no spring breaking jackass can lineup Christina Aguilera for six songs in a row.
Thirdly: There is a pool table and a fully functioning, super awesome Creature From the Black Lagoon pinball machine. Admittedly, drinks and pool go hand-in-hand. Drinks and a supersonic silver marble, . not so much.
Fourthly: Aside from the free popcorn, there is no food offered at the Parrot. Which means, smoke 'em if you got 'em. However, you are very welcomed to bring outside food in. Something like, say, a cheesesteak from Mr. Z's is a good fit.
Fifthly: They've got a pretty good beer selection and the bartenders are super on top of their game. They come to you. None of this flagging your ten dollar bill for attention crap. Also, it should be mentioned that the way they pour booze over at the Parrot is no joke. Ask for a Crown and Coke and you're likely to be able to "read the funnies through it."
Sixthly: If its tales of wacky adventures you're after, just point to any of the, seemingly, random flotsam hanging on the wall and ask the tenders what the story behind it is. Unlike the hokey bullshit tourist traps along Duval, (most) everything up in the Parrot has been hand-delivered by a friend of the bar. And the tales of some of these artifacts are so unbelievable, how could you not believe them?
Seventhly: Just get your ass to the Parrot already. One of the last vestiges of debaucherous integrity you're likely to find in Key West.
This is my favorite bar in the world. Â It has everything I want. Â Pool tables, good juke "bock", live music, cool bartenders, its open til 4 am and it opens at 7 am... Â It's a dive, kind of a Star Wars bar... Â After you have been to 10 or 12 bars in Key West this should be your last stop. Â The parachute hanging from the ceiling, awesome painting hanging over the Southard Street entrance, you can feel the personality and energy of this place the moment you step in the door.
When asked; "What is your favorite bar in the world?" Â My answer is, The Green Parrot.
This is probably the best bar in Key West. Â It's been around since 1890 and is literally the first and last bar on US-1.
If you're doing the tourist thing, naturally you have to drink at Sloppy Joe's, Irish Kevin's, or any of the touristy joints on Duval. Â But, once you get that out of your system and want to chill with some locals in your typical laid back dive bar type setting, swing by the Green Parrot. Â This place is still packed and offers live music and cold beer, but leaves the obnoxious frat boy type back on Duval. I'll drink to that ;)
What a classic. Â I went to this bar last year with my father who served with the Navy Submarine Station at Key West for numerous tours in the 50's and 60's. Â Back then the bar was called The Brown Derby. Â It is right outside the old entrance to the Navy area. Â There used to be a bar right at the gate called "The Gate Bar". Â My dad was disappointed to see it no longer exists.
We stopped in for a few drinks this past year and had a great time. Â It has a nice old dive bar atmosphere and the drinks were cold and refreshing. Â Looks to be a fave w/ locals. Â Would love to hang out here if I lived in Key West.
