The food is so delicious here!! We absolutely love this place and would eat here every weekend if the atmosphere was better! It's real bright, cold and noisy (from a large screen TV) and they also don't serve alcohol, which would actually be fine if the the place had some ambiance. Â The waitress is hilarious and so much fun and she is so great about suggesting items to try.
Review Source:I'll start this off right.. This is leagues better than Punjab palace. For a HOST of reasons.
Don't let the fact that this place is in Colton scare you, this is probably the gem of the entire area, and absolutely one of the best Indian/Pakistani places in the Inland Empire.
I had such a good meal here I'm going to write a full fledged review instead of something short and to the point--
Service: Excellent. Our waitress was very funny, quick-witted, and attentive.
Food: Chicken Tikka Masala, Lamb Karahi, Garlic Naan, Sesame Naan (not sure the real name?), Some mixed pickle (aka achar), and Chicken Biryani.
Chicken Tikka: Delicious, not greasy at all which is awesome considering the other CTM at places is usually indiscernable from the butter flavor. Only complaint was that there wasn't more to take home!
Lamb Karahi: Delicious as well! Great smell, taste, consistency, and again wasn't dripping in grease like others!
Naan: This was the best part-- it was THIN and NOT OILY! Great!!
Achar: If you don't like it, you won't.. fortunately I like it a whole lot and it was delicious!
Biryani: You can't not like it, it's basically rice with chicken and just pairs meals nicely.
Price: Roughly $10 per entree and like $10 for the 3 orders of naan we had, all together with tax was $45 with a tip. Not bad!
I will definitely be back to this place when in the area, or if I'm hungering for some Indian/Pakistani food. Highly recommend visiting this place.
Catching up with a cousin in Los Angeles, actually in the Riverside area, I was not sure what to expect by way of Pakistani food.
What a pleasant surprise this gem of a place was. From the gracious, friendly, though very traditionally conservatively dressed young lady, to the excellent Nihari (a favorite of mine and my fellow diner), and top notch Chicken Karahi, including the thick, creamy, delicious Lassee, the whole experience was excellent. And it is Halal.
The reasonable prices were another delight.
What I also found amusing was that around the same equivalent time that top Pakistani-Chinese restaurants would have waiting lists of people in Lahore and Karachi, there were tables upon tables of Chinese-Americans savoring real Pakistani food in California.
Imran
I am giving this place 1 star for the following story in bullet point format:
1) My friend and I had just got done working out at the local 24 Hour Fitness and we decided to get some takeout from somewhere.
2) I found this place on my iPhone and decided to pull out since it was nearby and had good reviews.
3) We arrived at about 7:00PM and placed an order.
4) We waited until 8:00PM to get our food. That is 1 whole hour to get some takeout.
5) To add insult to injury, the restaurant was not busy at all (3 small groups dining in).
6) To add additional insult, there were people who came after us who got their food before us.
7) To add even more insult, when we got home, the food was not even good. It was cold (it took us 10 minutes to drive home) and the taste wasn't any better than an average Pakistani/Indian restaurant.
8) They did not even recognize how long it took. If they did, they should have given us a simple freebie like simple naan.
9) Lastly, I paid $18 for Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan, and some Mango Lassi. Does that sound like it should cost you $18?
This is why I am giving this place 1 star. Please only go here if you're really craving some Pakistani/Indian food. Otherwise, their utterly slow service, non-proportional prices, and inconsideration will anger your stomach.
The food and the service was great. The chicken tikka masala flavors were delicious although, the dish could have been more spicier for my taste buds. Â That could only be, maybe because I had spicier dishes at Indian restaurants in San Francisco. Â The food took awhile to come out, but the atmosphere is comfortable while waiting. Â Also one can't rush good food made to order. Â Nice people and good food, certainly is a better place to enjoy a meal than most places I visited in the Inland Empire, that I have not reviewed.
Review Source:Authentic, fresh, and flavorful dishes, you can't go wrong here. This place is easy to miss when driving through the city of Colton. It doesn't look like much from the outside but their food is delicious. I've tried the puneer saag and aloo dishes both of which are spiced perfectly. Their garlic naan comes out warm from the oven and topped with garlic and cilantro. Â Prices are a little above average and portions are not too large but very rich and filling. Good place for vegetarians.
Review Source:I've eaten here twice so far, and there will be many more meals here in my future.  Gul Naz is a GEM, a diamond in the rough of our corner of the Inland Empire.  Pakistani food is very similar to Indian food, with the distinction that slightly different spices can be used and the meat is prepared according to Halal standards (which are similar to  kosher requirements, but not identical).  I have to say that we had excellent service while eating here both during a lunch rush and for an early weekday dinner.  The vegetable pakoras were delicious and completely absent of sog-causing grease.  The Pakistani rice, a specially herbed basmati, was light and the perfect base for the main dishes.  The chicken tikka masala we chose to eat both spicy and mild - although I like spicy food, I preferred the mild because the array of flavors were more discernible than with the spicier version.  The Puneer Saag dish was tasty, adding tomato for a more robust spinach and cheese flavor than the ordinary saag paneer.  I also love me some mango laasi, and Gul Naz's version was perfectly creamy.  For a real treat, one in our party ordered the Rooh Afza With Milk, a lassi-like drink made with rose syrup.  I was afraid it would be too sweet, but it was refreshing and aromatic.
Gul Naz's name is easy to remember for any Tolkien fan, since it's the syllables from Nazgûl, reversed. Â
This place hardly ever is packed, even though it definitely should be. Â Sadly, I think that might have something to do with anti-Muslim sentiment in our region. Â I'll be supporting this restaurant as much as I possibly can because good, relatively healthy, non-Mexican food is hard to come by in these parts.
Food came out nice and hot
Service was slow to start but really nice people
Ambiance and decor was simple, nothing to rave about but it was clean and it was nice that the menus were not all beat up like typical small restaurant joints
What we got:
Tikka Masala was a bit more creamy than typical Indian food so therefore less spicy tasting. Â The Chicken Karahai was very tasty and spicy in a red tomato sauce. Â That is a must try. Â Goes great with the Garlic Naan. Â I usually do not get the lassi drinks but the Mango Lassi was just like a Mango Yogurt smoothie. Â really helps with the spiciness of the food. Â Solid 4, would have given it a 4.5.
Wow-what a wait!! We did come with a big party of people-about 20 but it took over an hour to just to get water/drinks to the table. Other people came in after us and ate before us-maybe they had reservation-not sure. There was a constant stream of people coming for their to go orders... Menu was a little pricy for a la carte especially the rice and meat dishes. I was really excited about eating food from Pakistan and even though the food was decent, the wait and the service a kind of killed it for me.
Review Source:We went on a rainy Friday evening, but we weren't going to let a little rain stop us from trying delicious food and being in the company of awesome people.
We had a group of about 20 people and our hostess/waitress was very friendly and very knowledgeable of the menu. Â We were curious about their clay oven and asked if she was able to take a photo for us, which she happily did, once we explained to her how interested we were.
Food was delicious. Atmosphere was very welcoming and cozy, compared to the weather outside.
Everything was good, besides the fact that they got only one order wrong, which meant a bit more waiting for one of our members.
Overall, it was an awesome experience and we will be back!
One of the best Pakistani restaurants I have ever been to! The chicken sheek kabobs are amazing, hands down the best I have ever had. The nahari is also pretty amazing. I have never been disappointed with the food. Sometimes service can be bad, but the good makes up for it. They take a while getting your food out but it's always worth it.
Review Source:I had not eaten all day, my foreign friend took me here. First time with Pakistani food. I shoved "tika masala, rice and naan" down my throat non-stop as fast as I could. He kept piling more and more and more. I ate like a champ!
The food is very very flavorful, I know where to get a good pakistani fix now.
Go eat here now!
Favorite Pakistani (similar to Indian) food in the area. Â Naan is always fresh and delicious, curries are flavorful, and everything I have ever ordered from the menu I have liked.
Service is a little slow but definitely worth the wait. Favorites include the masala sauce, spinach, and eggplant.
4 star food, 2 star restaurant.
Before I begin let me say that I am a sucker for Indian/Paki food. Curry always hits the spot for me and I don't think I've ever turned down a chance to hit up the local curry joints in the area. Me and my roommate decided to try this place out on account of the good reviews.
FIRST IMPRESSION
The restaurant is small but that's no biggie. There's islamic paintings hanging up, a massive flat screen tv to keep you from noticing how long your food is taking. I like fancy settings, but the ambiance was more than adequate. Truth be told, I could be served in a cardboard box and I'd be happy so long as the food was good.
THE STAFF
Our waiter was hilarious! Very charming and helped us pick out some good dishes. However, we didn't get to see much of her as the place was EXTREMELY understaffed. 1 waiter and 1 busboy, who looked like he just walked off the set of the Jersey Shore. The place wasn't busy; there were only 4 other tables besides us but it was obvious that the staff could barely keep up and as you can imagine made service VERY SLOW. It's always tough to see overworked servers.
THE FOOD AND THE PRICE
The food tasted great! At least, all four bites of it.
What gives? The serving sizes here are SO SMALL. Not to mention that the entrees don't automatically come with rice or naan, which needs to be purchased separately. That's like serving fries and making you pay for ketchup! Not to mention that the average entree price is about $10-$15, which is a bit steeper than your average restaurant. I honestly would  have no problem with the value if the serving size was at least doubled, or the prices were dropped 1-2 ducats. Really, I'm not being another fatass American (I'm just a regular fatass). The serving sizes are THAT small and I know curry isn't expensive to make.
ONE MORE THING
We split our bill in half and paid with two cards. Our bill was $37.66 so we should have been charged $18.33 each but instead we were both charged an even $19 AND THEY DIDN'T BOTHER TELLING US. I know its just a few cents (its actually $1 dollar more in total than what we should have paid) but on principle, you should never round up your customer's bill. Guaranteed, that would cause a shit-fit with plenty of other customers. Bring cash, if you absolutely want to dine here.
OTHER PLACES
I really really really want to like this place because the staff seem friendly, it looks family owned and the food is delicious but the tiny portion sizes and the shady business practices makes it a very hard sell. There's no denying that the food is great here but other curry houses in the area have food that tastes just as good for a considerably better price. I'd recommend Dehli Palace or Naan Cafe before this place. I'll come back again, to see if this was just a one time clusterfluff.
Wonderful, wonderful food. Although it takes awhile to get the food, you'll forget the waiting time after your first bite. The garlic naan is to die for, and most of their curries are delicious. Especially loved the SAAG (spinach) and all the garlic cream sauce curries.
Only precaution: you smell like delicious pakistani food afterwards, so if you have work or a church service to attend, would avoid right before!
Dear Self,
Get directions BEFORE you begin a journey! Â I saw the store front picture and decided I knew where I was going. Â I was wrong, I did a right turn from the left lane. Â Good thing nobody was on the side of me.
On to the review.....
Location: Well, its located in a quiet strip mall with easy access to the 215 freeway. Very convenient for those of us on our lunch break. Â Due to the busy street traffic there aren't many loiterers around as is typical for strip malls.
Atmosphere: Â The interior of the building is nice, clean and welcoming. The simple decor brings a sense of serenity. Everything has a place here and it is appreciated. They have larger tables for big parties also. Very Mellow!
Staff: Upon entering I was greeted by a pleasant waitress/hostess who performed both duties seamlessly. Granted it wasn't busy. Â I was quickly seated and asked if this was my first time here. Â Every restaurant has their own flow so its nice to get an explanation if you are a newbie. Â Throughout my lunch the service was spectacular as well as the conversation, I felt like family.
Food: Â in my quest to try new foods and restaurants often I find myself disappointed; not here. The cuisine was everything I imagined it to be and more. They have lunch specials (yay) which is not only budget conscious but great for customers who are unfamiliar with food pairings. I ordered the #3 - Beef Sheekh Habob & Chicken Handi for $10.99.
- Beef Sheekh Habob, it resembled a meatloaf shish-kabob. The meat was flavorful and not salty. Â
- Chicken Handi, I was surprised because with each bite it tasted different. The chicken was very moist and cooked in a tomato based sauce. At first the chicken tasted like soul food, then Italian, then Pakistani. Â
- The Basmati Rice was perfectly cooked and the side salad was fresh. The Naan was warm and fresh out of the oven. Â The yogurt dipping sauce was a nice tart addition to the plate.
I'm happy I came here and can't wait to try more (everything) on the menu. Â Nothing beats good food, great service and an exceptional price!
My favorite restaurant for Indian (Pakistani) food. The food tastes great, so rich and flavory. Good place for vegetarians. They don't serve any alcoholic drinks, love it. Sometimes service is very slow, but this is often compensated by the very friendly Sonja. Mango lassi and gulab jamun (when warm) are really good. Big tv screen is pretty annoying, i don't come to a restaurant to watch tv.
Review Source:5-stars: Authenticity
4-stars: Cleanliness of the place/Friendliness of the staff-they help you order if Pakistinian food is new to you.
3-stars: LONG wait for the food. We came after work and there was 10 of us. It took us 3 hours to eat and leave. Almost not worth it even though the food was good.
Exceptional quality and value. I really enjoyed the food here and the family who owns the restaurant was really kind and attentive.
I ordered the daal soup to start off with. It was very spicy, but hit the spot and I enjoyed every last drop. We shared the mixed grill entree, and at $20, it was an incredible value - the sizzling plate was piled high with chicken and beef kababs, tandoori chicken, and a leg of lamb. We ordered it with yogurt, bread, and some rice. The rice was fluffy and dotted with flavorful saffron bits (many restaurants will substitute food coloring instead of using this rather expensive, yet intensely flavorful spice. I was so pleased to see that they used the real stuff). Â The yogurt was home made and deliciously creamy. The bread was fresh and made from scratch, which made for a perfect pairing with the meat.
We certainly wouldn't have checked this restaurant out if it wasn't for the Yelp reviews, and I am very glad that we did. This is a Halal restaurant, so don't expect to find any alcohol on the menu.
Family run joint, awesome for take out and dine in. It's has a home-like atmosphere because families are hanging out and having dinner while watching Pakistani channel on the big screen TV. The only con is the long wait for both dine-in and take-out. From our experiences, it took about 25 minutes to get our food when we dined in and about 40 minutes for take out to be ready. I think the delay is due to the meal being home cooked (this is only a speculation). When you call for take out they usually say that the food will be ready in 15-20 minutes. It's probably going to take longer than that. So, before getting in your car, it's best to call in to see if you're food is ready.
Made an impression and imprint on my taste buds:
CHICKEN BIRYANI - The chicken pieces are tender from being boiled in some wonderful broth for a long time. The rice is mixed with distinct sauce made from Middle Eastern/Indian/Pakistani spices. The concept is basic: rice & meat but there's nothing basic about the flavors.
SAAG PANEER - Woah! Definitely not like the Indian saag paneers. The gravy less creamy than typical Indian style. The flavors again are mild but really unique. I really like how all the subtle flavors of spinach, onion, tomatoes, ginger, and garlic come together and all you want to do is eat more even though you are full.
Good but not unique:
Chicken Tikka Masala
Garlic Naan
Mango Lassi
The food here is honestly pretty good. Not great mind you, just pretty good. When there are great options for Indian food in the area (true, this is Pakistani, but tomayto tomahto) I rarely find myself coming here.
The biggest issue I have is the wait. This place is slooooooooooooooooooow. Like doped up snail slow. This wasn't a one time thing either, it's always slow. It's even slow for pickup. We called an order in once and were quoted 30 minutes. We actually gave them extra time and arrived 40 minutes later ... only to be told it wasn't ready and they needed 10 MORE minutes. This sort of thing has happened multiple times and it's pretty annoying, especially when there's only four people in the restaurant at the time.
The staff is nice enough, but they seem overwhelmed by the simplest of restaurant challenges (as in my above example). We ate in once but also wanted something else to go for a friend. The waitress looked like a deer caught in headlights, breathed deeply as if to prepare for this tremendous ordeal, and then went to take care of it. Yeesh, sorry lady, we didn't mean to ruin your week ...
So decent food but problematic service overall. The food is sufficiently different from your typical Indian fare to warrant a try if you're a fan of Indian food.
Went went to this restaurant on a Tuesday around 1pm for the lunch special. I don't' remember the name of the dish I got but the server told me it was the most popular lunch special: chicken, beef, rice, which comes with naan and Mangolasses (delicious!!) to drink. The Manglolassi was very delicious and cold. The food was served hot with good amount of spices and plenty of it. The only problem was that restaurant tables and floor were not that clean (at least when we got there), the ordering process, delivery of the food, and getting our check took a long time (there were two other tables). Definitively going back when we are not in a rush.
Chicken, beef, rice Lunch special: 9.99
Mangolasses: 2.99
Total cost: 13.99 (I guess there was no tax)
I love Gulnaz.
First off, it's a non-descript place in a strip mall but well worth it. Â Not super fancy but clean and neat. Â Service is superb. The waitress is very friendly, funny, and always quick and attentive. Â She always provides amazing service even when we arrive with a group of 15 with no notice.
Food is absolutely delicious. Â I love the Garlic Naan, the Chicken Tandoori, the Chicken Tikka Masala, Channa Masala, the Paneer, the Spinach, and the rice is to die for. Â I haven't had anything there that I haven't loved. Â Food always arrives steaming hot and freshly prepared.
This place is well worth a visit. Â You won't be disappointed. Â I HIGHLY recommend Gulnaz.
We decided on Gul Naz because of the favorable Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed; we were impressed!
Neither of us had every had Pakistani food, so we asked the waitress to help us order. Â She did. Â She even recommended drinks from the menu. Â She was absolutely fantastic.
The food? Â Fantastic! Â We will be back. Â The food was freshly prepared and reasonably priced. Â We have a new favorite place to dine!
The short: Food makes you overlook bad location. Among the better ethnic places in town.
What I'd get here: Onion kulcha. IMO, you can't go wrong with the curry entrees.
Who I'd take here: Family that wouldn't mind the area, a foodie date.
Food Quality: 6
This place offers authentic Pakistani food, which is similar to Indian food, if you're not sure what that is. Its very good, comparable to that nice Indian place in Mo. Val. Whereas they have free lentil soup, this place offers free gulab jamin (dessert). The portions are large.
+1 good food. +1 free dessert. +1 good portions.
Service Quality: 4
The waiter was very friendly. She was accommodating when we were a huge group and asked to split the check up; normally would anger a waitress. She admitted going on Yelp to see how the place was doing in reviews. Service was kind of slow, probably due to there only being two people working there at the time.
+1 for good service. +1 for proactive yelping. -1 slow service.
Location, Cleanliness and Ambiance: 1
This place is in a bad part of town, across from cheap motels and located at a run-down strip mall. When we went here at night we missed the place a couple of times.
-1 bad area. -1 hard to find at night.
How I rate: I have 3 categories, and each category starts at 3 points. For each item where I am impressed, they get 1 point; disappointed, lose one point.
Overall rating: round(average(ratings)) = round(3.7) = 4
Really, whenever I'm craving some good spice-tastic Pakistani food, this is the place to go. Primarily a great take-out joint.
1. Chicken Tikka Masala, Naan, and Jasmin rice. All soooo good. And you can get all 3 for about $15. BIG portions, so this is plenty to feed two. The overall taste of the tikka masala is creamier than most indian places in the area, which is nice.
2. Rice dishes are almost too spice-centered for me. Sometimes you get cloves in your mouth, and it overwhelms the flavor and can't really taste much else.
3. Sometimes if you end up waiting longer than their estimated time for your order, they'll hook you up with free Mango lassi drinks while you wait. (Usually only if the nice girl is working). I say that's a plus!
Dining in can be a long process. The place isn't the nicest in terms of ambiance, and whenever I've been inside, 99% of the customers seem like Pakistani or Indian friends of the owners (or they just seem to be really chatty with them). I guess this is sort of a plus: For one, you know this place is legit. On the other hand, if you don't seem like you know the people, they might not serve you as well. Like I said, getting take out is the best option. (Make sure you order at least 20 min. ahead of the time you want your food!)
Story time:
Me: "$4.62 total? Hmm, I just have $4 cash. I'll just use my card."
Girl Employee: "No no, it's fine. Just $4 is okay"
Man, I love family-owned joints.
I love Indian food places, so finding one closer to home is always a challenge.
This place is tucked away in a non-descript shopping plaza. Upon walking in you can immediately feel this is family run. Decor isn't what you're there for and the wait staff was younger, which sometimes means non-attentive, but honestly this might be an Indian/Pakistani trait because even the places I go to a lot seemed to "leave you alone"
We ordered a few items.
Chicken Tikka Masala
Lamb Gosht (sp?)
And Lambi Biryani
The CTM was good, but they used breast meat. Although I know us "White bread" Americans love our breast the leg and thigh meat works so much better. I learned from another place you can still order it this way, so I'll ask next time.
The Biryani was decent, honestly my wife gets this and I think it's just a side dish...sort of like shrimp fried rice. You can eat it alone, but why?
The best was the Gosht, which came in lentils and some nice garlic and spices. The rice was a little bit soft for my taste, but nothing bad. We'll be coming back to try some other dishes and support this local hang out. Good food!
Chicken Tikka Masala was excellent, Â Lamb, Chicken Biryani really Flavorful! Garlic Naan made just right! 4 of us had all we could eat and the total was just over $50.
We really enjoyed the evening dinner. Not many people there on this Thursday night. I guess business was slow. Our waitress was fun and did a good job. She communicated really well.
Bathrooms were really clean.
The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars was because of the large screen TV playing Pakistani television. It just happened to be on a channel that was showing a young man taking care of a baby. Through most of the show the baby was crying. That is NOT one of the things I want to go to a restaurant and listen to. Except for that Gul Naz would have earned a 5 star rating.
GO - I will go back and hope there will not be re-runs.....
This is my very favorite restaurant in the IE. Â Colton is the home of the big white mountain that you can see off the freeway, and the home of Colton Piano which used to advertise pretty heavily during the 70's (Who could have thought that we could afford a piano of our own? Â And who could have thought a Schaffer Piano....). Â But the real star of this town is Gul Naz Cuisine of Pakistan. Â In Los Angeles, I have been to Al Waatan in Harthorne, which kicks ass, and Al Noor, which is close by but less tasty. Â Additionally, I lived next door to a Pakistani fellow who schooled me on chili. Â I bow down to Pakistani spices, for they are the holy grail. Â This place is worth the drive from anywhere in Southern California. Â ANYWHERE.
When you get here, talk to the owner, and ask her what is good here. Â She is a friendly and gracious lady who will talk your ear off about her country's cuisine. Â She will ask you if you like lamb, vegetables, or another meat and then inquire about your tolerance to spicy food. Â I like lamb and vegetables and I like them spicy. Â When she allowed me to brown bag a cold beer in here, I was in 7th Heaven. Â The naan is homemade and a delicious tool for devouring the wonderful dishes available here. Â I would be thinking lamb, beef (like Luke correctly suggests), eggplant, and lentils when I get in here. Â Also, get yogurt, you will want it to cool the flames. Â It costs about 35-40 bucks for 2 hungry people with all the trimmings. Â
My hat goes off to the owner and the well-trained Mexican fellow cooking the food in the kitchen here. Â This place is fucking amazing.
After a few years of Indian food, it was time for the other side of things, it was time to try Pakistani food. Â Sure, the I.E. has some pleasant or good Indian food (Clay Oven in San Bernardino is my personal favorite), but, I wondered what Pakistani food is like.
Hotter. Spicier. Meat options. No alcohol. Flavorful basmati rice. Â Did I mention beef? BEEF. Â
Yes, there are some similar items between an Indian restaurant and  this Pakistani restaurant, but be forewarned, the spices are different.  The flavors are different.  When cilantro is one of the listed ingredients, you know its a bit different. Â
And they have not just mango lassi, but strawberry lassi, and sweet lassi, and salty lassi. YES. More options on the lassi.
And they may have tikka masala in the menu, but it isn't the same as the Indian tikka masala. Â Think spicier. Â
I love this restaurant. Â I just wish it was closer to my work so I can go during lunch time for their lunch specials. Â They look so delicious.
The service is friendly. The food is delicious. The prices are within reason. Â And the food should be eaten at a pace to fully enjoy all the flavors left in your mouth.
And people, get it right, this isn't Indian food, its PAKISTANI FOOD.
I went to this restaurant with my school friends after played tennis. One of my friend who is from middle eastern suggested this restaurant.
I've never tried Pakistani food but I was sure I like it because I love all Indian and Arabic food.
We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Basmati rice with chicken, some bread, kebab, and curry ( I forgot the name..) Chicken Tikka Masala was excellent!! I think Pakistani food is similar to Indian food. They use almost same spices. Some food was spicy so my friends were drinking water a lot.. Â but It was just right for me.
Bread was also good. there were two kind of bread, garlic and plane. And staff recommended garlic. (but we got both) soft, hot, and  good flavor. I couldn't stop eating :P
It was dark a little bit in the restaurant ( we went to there aound 4pm) but clean and owner is friendly. Â I like this place.
Wow, this place is awesome. I'm an adventurous eater and I found this place here on yelp while I was looking for some place interesting for my birthday. Gul Naz did not disappoint. The menu had a lot of options so the waitress was very nice and helped us pick out some dishes. I can't remember the names very well but there was the Chicken tikka masala, an eggplant dish, a beef dish with a red sauce on top, garlic naan, and some chicken and rice dish. They were all very good.
Other customer's there had a sizzling dish that smelled amazing and the yogurt drink, so that's what I'm going to try next time (which will be very soon).
It's places like this that make you feel sorry for all those people stuck in the chain restaurant routine.
First time with Pakistani cuisine, but it's very similar to Indian. Â It's located in an unassuming little strip mall, and the interior is charming. Â "Gul naz" means something along the lines of beautiful rose bouquet, hence all of the rose-themed decor inside (though I can't help cheekily associating it with "Nazgul" from the Tolkien universe!). Â
Dishes ordered:
Appetizer - Chapli Kabob
This was good. Really good. Like, I-wish-I-could-have-a-plate-of-these-right-now good. Â A meaty, fried patty served with lemon & onion. Â Wasn't greasy at all, and it's packed with flavor.
Entrees - Beef Ballti, Aloo Palak
The tenderloin in the beef ballti was out of this world. Â So tender, cooked perfectly. Â It's served in a subtle sauce. Â Aloo Palak was perhaps the best I've ever had. Â The spinach was spot-on and that sauce was very flavorful.
Sides - Paratha, Pakistani rice (basmati)
The Paratha was good, though I don't have much in the way to compare it to. It is a wheat bread similar to naan. Â Rice was basic, but cooked well.
Drinks - Strawberry lassi, Pakistani tea (black tea)
The lassi was incredible! Â It's very sweet, and I saved most of it to drink at the end of my meal, though it went surprisingly well with the savory and spicy flavors in the dinner. Â The Pakistani tea was also very sweet. Â Not a creamy tea, like Indian chai, but every bit as good.
Dessert was served on the house for us, a pistachio ice cream. Â It's extremely creamy, and the pistachio flavor is very pronounced. Â It melted a little bit fast, but I'd certainly order it in the future. Â (And I'm not a big fan of Indian-style desserts.)
Overall, the experience was really great. Â The waitress was a doll; very friendly and eager to explain things. Â I enjoyed the atmosphere and never felt rushed at any point during the dinner. Â I would love to go back to Gul Naz anytime, and I definitely will be!
I'd never had Pakistani cuisine before coming here, so it was a departure from the usual Indian or Persian food. Gul-Naz is inexpensive but serves hearty food. We ordered several dishes and 3 types of Naan and our bill was less than $20. If you've had Indian food, this won't be anything of a surprise; however, some of the flavors and spices are different. The family that runs the place is extremely friendly. Be advised that they cook everything to order, so if you've only got an hour for lunch, I would not recommend coming here unless you call ahead and pre-order.
All in all, I would return if the opportunity arose.
