I met family here for dinner on Friday evening and was reasonably impressed. Â In all honesty, this restaurant is more than a bit dated, but not necessarily in a bad way. Â The menu was pretty much standard for what you'd find in a nice restaurant a couple of decades ago: a selection of steaks, some fried seafood, 'nice' sandwiches, and a salad bar. Â That being said, the food was well prepared, very reasonably priced, the atmosphere of the restaurant was warm and friendly, and the service was efficient. Â
If you're in the mood for something fancy or trendy, then this definitely isn't the place to go, but it does serve wholesome, no frills food that's well prepared. Â As another reviewer noted, be prepared to pay cash because they don't accept cards.
I'm not a great fan of Gusben's - it's OK, I guess. Â The service is always friendly, if not terribly expert about the menu. Â I've had a steak and was underwhelmed, but the Shrimp Po' Boy is all right. Â The salad bar is nothing special, but it's OK for what it is. Â Damning with faint praise: Gusben's is miles better than than the Steak House in Baldwin, which has mercifully closed. Â And the building (an old Chevy showroom) is rather interesting to look at while you wait for your meal.
One thing to watch out for is that they do not accept credit cards, so bring yer cash.
